We are at above 18 feet.

Because we are
still relatively shallow.

Today, they
are drilling a new borehole

In the fabled money pit area,

Attempting to penetrate a
five-foot-tall wooden tunnel,

Some 103 feet deep, which they
first discovered two weeks ago.

Oh, wow. Whoa!

- That's a tunnel, all right.
- That's really cool.

This is a previously unknown
perhaps depositor... tunnel.

That is really exciting.

A subsequent
sonar operation revealed

That the tunnel is heading north

Toward a mysterious structure
known as the garden shaft.

A shaft that has been carbon-
dated to the early 18th century

And where recent water
testing has indicated

High-trace evidence of
gold deep underground.

We don't know what
the garden shaft is.

We have gold
showing up in the water.

So it has turned out to
be perhaps significant.

Whether it's gonna lead
us to the treasure or not,

We're going to have to see.

It was in the middle
of a wooded lot.

What makes this artifact

So intriguing is that
it was found on lot 7,

Near the border of lot 8 on
the western side of the island.

It is in this area where
the team discovered

A semi-precious garnet
gemstone five years ago

That some believe
may be connected

To sacred treasures
of the knights templar.

And just this year, it is
where they also discovered

A bunk hook designed
for lifting heavy cargo,

As well as a possible coin

Potentially predating
the 16th century.

You know, the first
thing that strikes me

Is that it's a ferrous metal
around the adornment item.

And this lip coming over
the edge, that might indicate

A little hinged something
or cover to it, perhaps.

Yeah, that's what
piqued my interest as well,

Because that so reminds
me of an old-style setting.

Yeah, so, I would have to think

That it's some kind of a pin.

The material is glass.

Hmm.

I don't know whether that's

On a metal backing, which
is known as a foil back,

Or there's actually

A colorant on the
back of the cab itself.

But, you know,

Glass has been used as
an imitation of gemstones

Since the roman times.

The other thing that
I will mention is that,

Having looked at a lot
of jewelry from all periods,

From all over the world, I've
never seen a mounting like that.

It's definitely not usa.

What you're telling us is
absolutely, bloody fantastic.

This has got an
old feel about it.

magnify the artifact

Up to 50 times its actual size.

Cool, that really
is a bobby-dazzler.

So, if you look at that
dark, round sphere

Up there in the
two o'clock position,

You can see that's an
air bubble, gas bubble.

Which does not occur
in any gem material,

Except for amber and
only on rare occasion.

So, that's another

Indicator that it's glass.

So, we come to the

Indelicate part of... Aging it.

Can you infer anything?

I can infer that the metal

Seems like it's a pretty

Non-evolved alloy,

- If you know what I'm saying.

That style of pin

Was common back
to the, you know,

1700s or earlier.

A potentially ancient cloak pin?

Oh, my gosh!

It's another
bobby-dazzler, look!

In 2018,

While searching on lot 21,
also located on the western side

Of the island,

Rick and gary found
a decorative brooch

Featuring a glass stone.

So, definitive glass but

Also definitive
hand-made, not modern.

And when
gemologist charles lewton-brain

Inspected it, the team was
stunned by his analysis.

When you say "not modern..."

Well, glass gems

Have been around
at least 500 years.

This is not your ordinary

Old brooch found in the ground.

That is a super ancient
way of making wire.

Could this
artifact found on lot 7

Be related to the other
pieces of ancient jewelry

That have been discovered on
the western side of the island?

If so, what else might be there

Just waiting to be unearthed?

Well, from that you can infer,

Why would someone
be wandering around with

An item such as this

On the western drumlin?
It makes no sense.

Unless...

There was a specific purpose

To be on the western drumlin.

It's a very,
very exciting piece,

And as an imitation-colored
gemstone, this is magnificent.

That's most unusual,

At a much shallower
depth of just 55 feet.

It felt hollow,
so I have to keep going.

above the bedrock.

That doesn't just happen.

Something has
happened down there.

They have
encountered a ten-foot void

At an elevation that's shallower

Than previous
discoveries, so it obviously

Makes this area,
the garden shaft area,

That much more intriguing.

So, we're gonna try and get a
water sample out of this, craig?

The hope is
that we can determine

Whether it was
natural or man-made.

Last year, do
you remember we had

The air pocket hole in ab-13?

- Yeah.
- It happened at 60 feet.

We start at 55, that just
means there's potentially

Some connectivity in this range.

We've never seen that before.

One year ago,
as the team drilled just

Three feet west
of this location,

At nearly the same depth,

Massive amounts of air
suddenly rushed to the surface,

As if the seal to a pressurized
cavern had been broken.

I'd say we're
close to something.

This could be the indication
of an offset chamber.

I mean, you know, I don't
know what else would be

At 55 feet.

You've always been
a proponent of that.

I have been, yeah.

It has long
been a suspicion of marty's

That whoever constructed
the booby-trapped money pit

May have also built a tunnel

That leads to a
chamber in dry ground,

Where the fabled
treasure is contained.

Is it possible

That the team has
just discovered

More evidence that
this could be true?

I think the offset
chamber theory is the only thing,

Really, that makes sense.

If somebody wanted
to hide something where

Nobody would get it,
they would've dug this deep

Illusion hole, for
lack of a better word.

But the real treasure

That's the shallowest

That seems to be a void.

And that cavity could be

into what they described

As a seven-foot-high vault

At a depth of 153
feet in the money pit.

Upon extracting their drill bit,

They were astonished
to find traces of gold

And a small piece of parchment

With the letters
"vi" written on it.

This discovery made some believe

That the oak island treasure

May consist of not
only precious metals

But also sacred
historical documents.

Could this believed
parchment scroll found on lot 8

Be related to the other
pre-16th century discoveries

The team has made in the area?

And if so, might it represent
another critical clue

That may help solve
the oak island mystery?

We haven't found
anything like this before.

A barter piece that would have

Value for that amount of
copper at the time, right?

So, it would have
monetary value.

How old is it?

It's 500 years old, at least.

To date it more accurately
would be really tough,

But because of the
composition, it's definitely

The weight on it is four grams,

So it'd have been
used like currency.

That mixture went out
of style in the early 1500s.

The archaeological
record shows that it was

Used as far back as

First, there is an existing

Ten-by-ten wood-grip
shaft to approximately

77 and a half feet depth.

The objective here is
to refurbish this shaft

And make it safe
for further exploration

Along the length of the shaft.

We are going to expose the shaft

Collar and build our foundation.

We will muck out
the backfill from

The existing floor of the shaft.

Our intention is

To re-line the shaft

As it currently exists

In order to preserve
what was there.

And then also, what
we're going to do is

Injecting grout into
the surrounding soils to

Slow down any water
infiltration into the shaft.

That will ensure the long-term

Stability of this
shaft excavation.

Brilliant.

We will continue to construct

The manway section

To make this shaft
accessible again for personnel.

I don't know, 50 feet,

And we want to
tunnel out from there.

dumas will construct

A concrete foundation
around the existing structure,

Excavate it with a massive
crane and hammer grab,

And then reconstruct
it with new, waterproof,

Wooden timbers down
to a depth of at least

77 feet, the believed
total depth of the shaft.

The objective,
again, is to rehabilitate...

The garden shaft
rehab project will provide

Several unique opportunities.

You can either tunnel
or expand the shaft.

You can go deeper
with the shaft.

To me, it's always about

The eyes and boots approach.

And we will have a legitimate,

For the first time,
eyes and boots

Approach to the money pit.

From start to finish,
what's the estimated

Time to completion?

Right now, we're forecasting

Approximately 50
days of in-the-hole

Rehabilitation work to get us

- To 77 and a half feet.
- Perfect.

We've never been
able to go underground

In the money pit, and
yet everyone before us

For 200 and some years
have been underground.

But that's an aside.

We believe that the
garden shaft will supply us

With some greater
understanding of the money pit,

What has been done not
only in the previous 227 years

But perhaps what
was done originally,

What we call the
depositional phase.

The idea of rehabilitating
a shaft so we can get

Underground is exciting

Because actually being there,

Actually getting down
and seeing things

Is always the
best, the best data.

And I think we can trace
the gold in the water.

Then we can find
the treasure if it's here

And figure out what exactly
happened on this island.
