After torrential rain left
their mining operation

at Catto's Paddock unworkable.

It's treacherous terrain,

It's not for the fainthearted
up here in the high country.

nuggets the old-timers missed.

Devil's Phoenix Project operation.

3 square kilometre Fair Lady lease.

We are just opening up the ground in
between the shaft to see if we can

helping us as an excavator.

Alex is in the loader
so it's good to have some help here

while Darren and
Paul are back at the other lease.

It's kind of a treasure hunt.

The more ground we open,

the chance we could find something
that the old boys missed.

ground between old mine shafts.

They want to locate a gold rich
quartz reef

that has produced over $8 million
worth of gold in the past.

With a lot of machinery,
we can move a lot of earth.

that will prove this lease

is basically going to turn our

worth $2 million.

After running costs every month
which is $50,000,

we're going to need a lot of gold
to make this partnership work.

$2.6 million season target.

But after crippling delays and major
damage to the Phoenix project,

the team are
now on the verge of collapse.

mounted a six-week expedition

We kind of have to go out this way

because, if we go out the other way,
it's literally a day and a half.

just on fuel so they are
counting on Salty's knowledge

getting the ore body out.

They were doing this by pick
and shovel.

its unique colour.

often found together

making blue quartz a good indicator
that this ground is gold rich.

A gold-bearing breakaway is a sloping
rock structure

containing a gold reef.

Prolonged weathering exposed gold
nuggets before heavy rains

wash them down into waterways

like the ones Alan
and Salty are detecting.

This place is definitely untouched
by a metal detector.
