the Ahmet Ertegun Tribute Concert,

a benefit event in memory of
music executive Ahmet Ertegun (1923-2006)

at the O2 Arena in London
on 10 December 2007.

Ertegun, the founder of Atlantic Records,

is considered one of the most significant
figures in modern recording history.

Released in 2012.

Good evening. It really was

the biggest crowd

ever assembled for a single performance

in one place,

in the entire history of the world.

It was tonight

and it was in Tampa.

The name of the group...

They've been around for years.

Popular with the acid-rock crowd,

big on album sales.

Tonight they broke the world record
set by The Beatles,

and Channel 13's John Jones
watched what happened.

Led Zeppelin played in Atlanta
on the first stop of a nationwide tour,

selling out there 49,239.

That even beat The Beatles record.

When a rock group attains a stature
such as Led Zeppelin,

they travel with their own jet.

Waiting at the airport,

two limousines

and a police escort.

Just 40 minutes to showtime,

Led Zeppelin arrives here at
Tampa Air Center

at the Tampa International Airport.

I'm pleased to say that one
of the group's four members

has my same name,
that's John Paul Jones

and he's their bass player.

Jimmy Page is the lead guitarist.

Robert Plant, the lead singer,

he's the one with long, curly hair.

And John Bonham is the drummer.

If you were at Tampa Stadium tonight

or anywhere nereby,

that's the sort of thing
you saw and heard.

Black Dog refers to a nameless
strayed black retriever

that ran around the Headley Grange (a mansion
in Hampshire) during recording sessions.

The retriever was old
but still sexually active

like the main character of the song
who has a desperate love desire.

For this song Jones wanted
to use a winding riff and

unusual rhythm changes that
people could not dance to.

Jones wrote the basic riff
on the back of a train ticket

on his way to a rehearsal at Page's
Pangbourne boathouse in 1968.

The drums and guitar actually
play completely different patterns.

A capella verses of this song were
inspired by Fleetwood Mac's song Oh Well.

Page performed Oh Well with
The Black Crowes on their 1999 tour.

Jones wanted to try
Electric Blues on this song.

He got the idea after hearing
Muddy Waters' album Electric Mud (1968).

As a result Black Dog was an example
of blues rock on the album.

It's appeared in a thousand

different guises since.

Maybe Johnson got it from somewhere else,
I'm sure he did.

Everybody nicks it.

we recorded together,

but to think about creating

a dynamic evening,

Often rated among the greatest
rock songs of all time,

it wasn't a chart hit because
it was never released as a single.

Plant explained the lyrics as
a cynical aside about a woman

getting everything she wanted all the time
without giving back any thought or consideration.

Page says that it crystallized
the essence of the band.

It had everything there and showed
the band at its best as a unit.

Not just solos or other things.

It was a milestone. Every musician
wants to do something of lasting quality,

something which will hold up for a long
time and they did it with this song."

In 1982 the band was accused
of a Satanic message

allegedly heard when playing
backwards the part about

"a bustle in your hedgerow".

Plant rejected this as
a bizarre coincidence,

saying that you need a lot of time to
even consider that people would do that.

Inspired by a drive
through the Sahara Desert

in Morocco when the band was heading to

the National Festival of folklore in 1973.

Plant, who wrote most
of the lyrics, explained that

the inspiration came from
the road never seeming to end.

The unique guitar riff is one of

the most memorable in rock history,
developed by Page over two years.

The composition was inspired by
Middle-Eastern, Moroccan, and Indian music.

At the time this song was composed, none of
the band members had ever been to Kashmir.

Plant once named it as
one of his favourite tracks

for possessing all the latent energy
and power that wasn't heavy metal.

It was something else,
the pride of Led Zeppelin.

Page and Plant recorded a live
12-minute version of the song

with a Moroccan/Egyptian orchestra
for their album No Quarter in 1994.

The opening track on the album.

When released as a single in the US,

it became their first hit single
and was eventually certified Gold.

The lyrics were borrowed by Plant from
the song You Need Loving by Small Faces,

in turn, a cover of
Muddy Waters' You Need Love.

The lyrics were originally
written by Willie Dixon.

The Small Faces were never sued by Dixon
but Led Zeppelin were in 1985.

Plant confessed the fact and

said that you only get caught
when successful, that's the game.

The distinct drum sound was recorded

in the big room at Olympic Studios
in London with 28-foot ceilings.

The drum kit was on a platform and

microphones were put and hung in
different places at different heights.

The freeform section
in the middle of the song

was produced by Page
and engineer Eddie Kramer

by "twiddling every knob
known to man" on a console.

There is a shorter version
lasting 3:10 (5:33 on the album)

released by Atlantic for
the promotion on radio stations.

It doesn't have the freeform section
in the middle and fades out earlier.

It wasn't intended
for commercial release

but some copies were sold in the US,
a collector's item now.

After one of the failed takes,
Bonham began to play the drum sequence

based on Little Richard's song
Keep A-knockin'.

Page added a guitar riff, the most
part of which is heard on the song.

Plant wrote the lyrics in response to

critics claiming Led Zeppelin III
not being really rock 'n' roll.
