guarded by Slumach's
hundred-year-old curse.

[Adam] A death sentence

to anyone
that tries to find his gold.

[Don] A lot of people

that have gone looking
for this mother lode

have not returned.

[Kru]
This is a miner's satchel!

Something happened to this guy.

Yeah.

Don't ever say it's not here.

If you misbehave,
you're gonna have consequences.

[Narrator]

[Adam] It's just a pile
of loose rocks--

it's an illusion.

[Narrator]

It's a very, very small window.

[Adam] We're talking
major coastal weather systems.

If you don't find it
in three months,

you're waiting

Fresh snow has landed

in the Pitt Lake alpine...

...a first indicator

that the hunt for Slumach's gold
is coming to a close.

As winter approaches,

a late-season lead

has Adam Palmer
travelling west of Vancouver,

to meet a familiar
and trusted contact.

I got a call from Ian Carter.

This is the same Ian Carter

that gave Kru and I

an original copy
of the Jackson letter.

This has been
in my family for years...

Grandpa's box.

[hinges creak]

This is
the original Jackson Letter.

[Narrator] In the 1940s,

Ian's grandfather,
Dick Carter,

followed clues
in search of Slumach's gold...

[Kru, reading] 20 miles
in the northwest direction...

[Narrator]
...and left behind a trail

of compelling evidence...

No way.

[Narrator]
...that Slumach's gold is real.

[Kru] Look at the size
of those frickin' nuggets!

[Adam]
The photos that Ian Carter had

of gold nuggets--

that's the best evidence
I've seen of gold

being in the Pitt.

When he calls you up,

says he has something for you,

it's gotta be good.

-Adam.

I got somethin' good for you.

This is my cousin, Heather.
This is her place.

what we had to show you.

[Heather] This painting
was done by my grandfather.

[Ian] We wanted
to reframe it...

[Heather] Yeah, and when
I turned this over,

I realized that there was
something hidden inside here.

[Narrator]
A stash of documents

from Dick Carter's
prospecting days.

[Ian] I knew
it was significant

when I saw the maps.

And one in particular,

which I know you're gonna be
very interested in.

This is the area in question.

[Adam]
That was in a frame?

[Heather] Yeah.

[Ian] He tended to do that--
squirrel stuff away.

I've been doing this
a long time,

and this is the first time
someone brings out a painting

and there's something hidden
behind the frame.

I mean, this is straight out
of a mystery novel.

[Ian] Potential mine locations,
I'm assuming.

[Adam] And he's got
some other names on here

that I've never seen before.

This is huge.
This is--

-Yeah.
-That's "X marks the spot."

-Exactly. There's a lotta X's.
-15 of 'em!

[Ian, laughs] Yes.

This guy is the real deal.

Carter was actually
one of the few people

that proved he was able
to go into the Upper Pitt.

So, last time we were going on
little clues--

little trip reports,
photos,

a letter...

now we have a map.

You can't get
better than that.

He marked
the whole Stave Glacier

in its entirety.

And there's X's going
all the way through it.

Dick Carter is my hero, okay?

Let's just start there.

The man is so mysterious.

So you think this is just
checked spots that he went to,

or these are spots

that he actually prospected
and found something?

I don't know.
I wish we had those answers.

Look, this is the area
that we were at--

right here.

We've been here, look.

This whole entire area
is the ice field.

Early in the season...

Adam and Kru
combed the Stave Glacier

following legendary prospector
"Volcanic" Brown

in search
of Slumach's gold.

[Kru]
That's a frickin' glacier, man!

Welcome to Bell Pass.

Whoo! Wow.

So he was
at the Bell Pass location?

[Adam]
Yeah, he's marked it off.

[Narrator]
Carter trekked these routes

only 10 years
after Volcanic Brown.

What's this one--
where's that?

-Thomas?
-That's Thomas Lake.

[Adam] Well, he was
digging somewhere...

wheelbarrowing
the ore out.

[detector squelches]

It's, like, right on the gold.

No, I'm serious.

Yeah, he's marked that off
as well.

I mean, we've been
to most of these places,

it seems like.

[Adam] We are essentially
on the same path

that Carter was on.

I'm looking at this map

and there're X's
popping out all over.

But there's
something different--

there's this red marking,
this red triangle,

pointing to one "X".

[Kru]
Everywhere else we've been,

but, like, this brings us
right to the doorstep.

Something spiked his interest
in this triangle.

Look. Bottom line--

no one has found as much gold
as Carter.

Because we're not just
talking about a legend anymore,

we're talking about facts.

He could've found that gold

right here, inside
the red frickin' triangle.

Pan of gold--

nuggets so big,
if I threw one at ya,

it'd knock you out.

And if he's got a treasure map
with an "X" and a triangle?

That's where we go!

Dick Carter knew
what he was doing.

This could be
the mother lode.

This could be
what we're lookin' for.

But Carter's map

is nearly 100 years old.

[Adam] This map is old.

I mean, this map
is not to scale.

We're talkin'
50 to 100 kilometres

of terrain that's just
in this one little section.

[Narrator]
To navigate,

the team needs
a starting point--

a way to orient themselves
on the map.

Well, I'm looking
at this map

and there's some faint writing
all over it.

When you first look
at this map,

you don't see those words--

it's faded, almost gone,

written in this faint pencil.

You can see here,
he's got "Heather... Creek."

-[Don] Is that pencilled in?
-[Adam] Yeah.

Okay. Have you ever heard
of Heather Creek?

No. There's no such thing
as "Heather Creek"

on current maps.

Maybe he used it

to navigate
to the upper headwaters

of where this creek
was coming from.

He laid it all out for us
on this map.

If you find that creek,
you could find his route.

[Narrator] Carter's route

appears to follow
either side of Heather Creek.

Three unexplored X's
mark the route north,

converging at
Carter's final destination...

...and what could be
Slumach's lost gold.

But...

[Adam] Heading into the Pitt
right now is a bad idea.

The weather is getting bad

and the snow line has come down
a significant amount.

At this time of year,

this is gonna be
the last expedition.

This is your one shot.

And that means, basically,
going for a ride.

Ready?

Kru] There's no place
like the Pitt in all of BC.

Once you blink,
the season's over.

So we have to push it,
we have to grind,

and we have to see
what's on that map,

as fast as we can.

[Narrator] The road north
through the Upper Pitt

is long and winding,

marked by
a series of logging roads

that lead into the dense
and unforgiving forest.

[Adam]
Based on the geography,

based on the mountains
behind us,

based on
what's in front of us...

we've zeroed in,
as best as we could,

to this marking on the map.

[♪♪♪♪♪♪]

[Kru] So powerful, eh?

Wow, look at all that bedrock.

[Adam] We need to make sure

that this
very promising-looking creek

is the same one
on Carter's map.

All right, so if
this is Heather Creek...

you can follow this creek
right up to that "X".

Sounds like a plan.

We going to get the gear
and head out?

First in gets the first gold.

Let's go!

All right!

[Narrator] To confirm
their starting point...

Oh...

put it in four-wheel drive.

There goes goat boy.

[Narrator]
...the team is looking

for signs
of human activity,

to determine
that this, indeed,

is Heather Creek.

[Adam] We gotta be looking
for any evidence of mining--

old road cuts, paths...

Back in the day,
you know, before the Internet,

all claims were actually marked
with claim posts.

There's usually
four claim posts per claim,

marking each corner.

Claim markers are the way
you mark a territory,

and the beautiful thing is,
they're made out of metal.

If it's there and it's metal,
we should be able to find it.

The best option we have
is just to explore.

There's kind of a trail here.

[Taylor] Just gotta look
in the right spots.

[detector beeping]

[detector humming]

[Adam] Something's around here.

-You got a hit?
-Yeah.

Whereabouts?

Somewhere in here.

Where'd you get the hit?

Right where you kinda...

-Right in there?
-Yeah.

-Check there.
-Oh! Wait, here we go.

What does it say?

[Kru] Check it out.

"Heather Creek."

[Adam] It's a claim post.

[mouths word]

This is the one.

[Kru] Old-school, too!

This is what's
marked on Carter's map.

This is Heather Creek.

And the fact that it's claimed,
I mean...

there was mining activity
going on here.

Mm-hmm.

I think
that he hit this creek,

he came on up,

he saw that it was rich in gold,

and then he's trying
to figure out,

where did
all that gold come from?

Yeah.

'Cause that's
what I wanna know.

And the triangle's
the hotspot.

The mother lode.

Exactly. Exactly.

I mean, that's where
we're trying to get to,

is that one "X"
in that red triangle.

[Narrator] The route
directly up Heather Creek

is steep,

but Carter's
three unexplored locations

provide two possible routes
to the gold.

[Adam] We're going to get
as close as we can to those X's

and see what landmark

would have warranted
marking an "X".

As a group, we can't cover
everything at once.

We go one way,
they go another way,

and then we come together.

More eyes, different places,

more terrain covered.

You guys go north,
we go east.

We can eventually hit
right in the middle.

Now we gotta do
what we gotta do--

we gotta go up.

[Taylor] Adam and I
took the high road.

Don and Kru took the low road.

[Narrator] The team
has arranged to reconnect

at a predefined spot
just inside the triangle.

Until they do,

they'll have
no means of communication.

[♪♪♪♪♪♪]

The weather window
is closing in.

Your elevation gets cut in half

of what you can access
this time of year

as compared to the summer.

You can feel it in the wind,
you can feel it in the air.

Late summer/early fall,

if there's precipitation,

that precipitation
falls as snow...

...and that snow
is not dirt bike-friendly.

[Adam] Well, that's not good.

The snow's come down
a long ways.

[Taylor] Oh, that's slick!

[laughs]
There's ice right here.

That's so slick.

I'll give it a shot.

Adventurer, go!
You're the mountaineer.

Well, it's worth it to try.

I'm looking at a seriously
snowed-in, icy road...

But when Adam
wants to get somewhere,

good luck
trying to stop him.

[engine roars]

[engine revving]

It's too deep!

[♪♪♪♪♪♪]

[Narrator] Only 10 kilometres
up a Pitt Lake logging road...

[bleep]

[Narrator] ...winter
is knocking at the door.

It's stuck!

It's too deep!

I'm just... sliding.

[engine rumbles]

Nah... I'm stuck.

Sunk yours pretty good,
didn't ya?

Yeah, it's too deep.
It's too wet!

[Narrator] The route
to Carter's marked locations,

and what could be
Slumach's gold,

points north.

We can probably
get through there, actually,

quite a bit further,

if we stick to the forest.

There's minimal snow,
compared to this road.

Screw the road--
we don't need the road.

[♪♪♪♪♪♪]

[Taylor]
I follow your lead.

This is the perfect excuse

to get off the road
and bushwhack.

[Taylor] Gotta love the trees!

[Narrator] So Taylor and Adam
make for the forest...

...but using the old map

to navigate
to their first "X"

is a whole other challenge.

[Adam] Yeah,
it's a tricky map to use.

You would never use this type
of map in the field today.

[♪♪♪♪♪♪]

Oof.

This is a huge amount
of terrain we're covering.

The key is to find evidence--

any evidence
that people were here.

[♪♪♪♪♪♪]

It's showing us, like,
right on top of one of the X's.

It's, like,
somewhere right in here,

right in this contour line.

One of those X's
is, like...

right here.

Whatever that means.

[Narrator] But the map
isn't their only tool.

The land
is full of indicators.

[♪♪♪♪♪♪]

There is a bit of a clearing,
like, right in there.

Well, let's go look.

Wow, this opened up.
[laughs]

See this?

Yeah.

Check this out.

Something was here.

[Narrator]
Six kilometres to the west,

Don and Kru make their way
on an alternate route north.

We're just trying to cover
as much ground as we can.

We need to get on these X's
as fast as we can.

We ain't taking an ATV
across that.

What do you think?

I think the bridge is gone.

This is where the ATVs stop
and we walk.

Well, let's mount up
and get it done.

Mother Nature's made
that choice for us, eh?

[♪♪♪♪♪♪]

[Kru] There ain't
no easy route.

We got a path through here.

[Kru]
You gotta put in the work

and do it again and again
and again.

[Narrator] As Kru and Don
press on into the bush,

to the east,

Adam and Taylor
are coming closer

to what appears to be
their first mark on the map.

[Adam] You see this?

Looks like
there's some sort of trail.

Oh, yeah, check this out.

[Taylor] Huh.

This is really old.

Looks like a cabin.

[Adam] This is
an old foundation.

Right here!
It's another one.

-Holy...
-This is incredible.

[♪♪♪♪♪♪]

Clearly,
we're on the right path.

I mean, I'm not going
through the front door,

but I'm going in.

Ugh.

A well-built cabin.

I see part of the roof here.

Yeah. It's what collapsed.

Let's have a walk around.

Geez! There's stuff
scattered everywhere.

Look at the hand chisels.

Holy!

Someone had some sort of
mining operation here.

This is what
they used to mine with.

That's a lot of work.

Whatever they were doing,
they were determined.

This is an X on that map.

This cabin, these tools--

this wouldn't be here

if there wasn't a mine,
if there wasn't gold.

[Narrator] The location
appears to line up

with an X
on Carter's map.

For Adam and Taylor,
that's one X down...

one more to go.

[Adam]
So that means we go...

Up.

With the things
that we're finding today,

it definitely is validation
to the X's on the map.

Whatever Carter
was searching for,

he had a methodology.

I mean, this is just

a breadcrumb that will lead us
to something bigger.

[Narrator]
Seven kilometres west,

Kru and Don are looking
for signs of human activity--

something that Carter
would have marked on his map,

and an indicator
they're on the right path.

[♪♪♪♪♪♪]

[detector beeping]

It's an old tree.
It's been here for a long time.

It sticks out
from all the holeyness of it.

This looks like
a great landmark spot

that you'd remember
to stash something.

It caught my eye, so,
maybe it caught somebody else's.

To see a land marker

amidst
this new-growth forest,

this one, literally, holey tree
sticking up in the middle of it,

I had to check it out.

[metal detector beeping]

[rapid beeping]

Got a huge hit on the front...

and I'm talkin' lit-up!

There it is again.

Like a Christmas tree, just--
[imitates detector beeps]

There it is again.

Oh, it's in here, man.

Come on.

There it is.

Holy crap!

I need a shovel.

[beeping persists]

Listen to that.

See how loose this soil is?

Could be by chance,
but normally,

when you bury something,
it doesn't compact the same.

This is what I live for!

Finding stuff out
in the middle of the bush,

where very few have gone before.

Still hitting. Holy crap.
This is deep, man!

[Narrator] High in
the mountains above Pitt Lake,

Don and Kru

are searching for some place

or some thing

1940s prospector Dick Carter
may have marked on his map.

[Kru] As I'm going down
in the roots, I'm getting hits.

There's metal.

There shouldn't be metal here,
you know?

And especially
underneath this old tree.

[Don] What made you
start searching here?

What you told me!

You said
"look out for landmarks."

So it could be
somebody's using nature's marker

to mark their own X.

-Bam!
-Eh?

That's what you showed me.

I've already gone down
almost a foot

and I'm still getting hits.

I say we at least give it
the decency of a proper dig.

[Narrator] For Kru,

it's been a season

of learning to manage
what prospectors call

"gold fever".

[Kru]
Where'd that shovel go?

I'm gonna dig
this overburden out.

I'll put it in the pan, and then
you look through the pan,

and see if
you can get anything with it.

Go to town!

I'm used to moving dirt.

Then you check through that
and I'll go one pan at a time.

Got a soil change here.

You gotta get
a little bit deeper.

[♪♪♪♪♪♪]

Try this down there.

Come on, buddy.

It was lighting up,
it was hitting,

and then, all of a sudden--
mm, nothing--

it's like we lost the signal.

We're getting hits
on the top,

and we go down,

we're getting hits
all the way down...

and then, all of a sudden,
it stops?

Come on.

It just doesn't make any sense.

I mean, science
isn't supposed to lie, right?

Come on, baby.

Come on, baby.

Ooh...
there's a lot of iron here.

See that?

The colour change there--

-[beeping]
-...that rusty red?

Ah!

I think it's the frickin' rock.

-Yeah, see?
-Yeah. Look how heavy this is.

Yeah.

Look at the colour.

Iron... rust.

[groaning] Argh!

And I guess it was just
leaching through the soil

-this whole time.
-Yeah.

[Narrator] High concentrations
of iron ore

can deceive
even the best metal detectors.

[groans]

It's hard
when you want something so bad.

I mean, it just sucks!

You put in all this work
and time and effort,

and you get
a rusty-ass rock.

I don't know, brother.

Maybe, this time,
it's not for us to find.

There's no doubt
that Kru knows how to find gold.

But he's gone
from "Mr. Gold Fever"

to becoming
more and more learned.

For Kru, personally,

it's because
he's listening.

To me,
this is like training.

I appreciate that, Don.

we got a job to do,
so let's get 'er done.

East of Heather Creek...

Adam and Taylor push north.

Oh! Thank you for the blessing.

[Narrator] Their route

has them
passing through an area

showing promising signs
of prospector activity...

an area that lines up

with their next X
on Carter's map.

You see
that cross cut in the rock?

-Yeah.
-See this?

This whole...

You see how straight that is,
how it's not natural?

It's not like a natural
creek bed sorta thing?

No, there's a hollow--
that's hollowed out.

That's a quartz vein,
if I ever saw one.

Yeah. Oh, yeah.

You get all that rusty iron.

-Oh, yeah...
-All that iron oxide

with this quartz vein running
right through the middle.

They're after that.

This is definitely the area
marked with an "X"

and I'm almost certain
that this quartz

is the reason
that Carter marked it.

Doesn't look like much.

Over the years,
it's kinda caved in.

I mean, this would've been
a lot of ground to move.

This trench
might've produced some gold.

They were trenching here
for something.

Meanwhile, to the west...

...Don and Kru continue
to look

for signs they're on
the right path.

-Kru?
-Yeah?

See that rock
on top of the stump?

It could be an indicator.

[Kru] Well, a marker,
definitely, right?

Look. You can see
the actual pathway

along the creek,
coming up through here.

[Don] You're right.

-Let's go.
-Check it out.

Carter's trail--

and a possible path
to Slumach's gold--

appears to be
a route recently travelled.

You think
this guy was a prospector?

Well, I don't know.

I'm looking
for some evidence, eh?

What else is he gonna be
doing out here?

[Don]
Somebody's obviously been here.

But why were they here?

Somebody's spendin' time here--
they must've found something.

You don't just set up
like this.

-No, he was in for the stay.
-Yeah.

Hey, check this out.

What in the world--

Look at this.

It looks like some kind of a...
cooking stove?

Huh.

Well, it-- they started
to build a...

a cover for it, obviously.

[Kru]
Unless it's a smelter.

Hey! Do you think
they were smelting?

You know, you may---
you may be onto something here,

because, seriously...

It's a rock...
rocket stove, yeah?

This could be...

a primitive smelter.

This is the way, in the day,

they used to actually
melt down the gold

and be able to make it into bars
and make it transportable.

They might have had, like,
a crucible on the top,

or inside,

and then just feeds it
and feeds it,

and then gets it hotter.

It looks almost like
a raw prospector's camp.

You got the camp,
you got a makeshift smelter.

[Don] Yeah.

[Kru] And you're right here
on the river.

They'd be smelting gold.

Somebody was camped here
doing the same thing Carter was.

[Don] They've either
left on their own

or they've disappeared.

[Narrator] The area lines up
with Carter's route north

and another "X" on his map.

[Don] Let's go, Kru.

[Kru] It's kinda
giving me the creeps.

-Yeah.
-Let's get on outta here.

It's starting to set in.

Especially
with the sun goin' down.

[♪♪♪♪♪♪]

[Narrator]
Six kilometres to the west,

Adam and Taylor
continue their trek,

cutting west,

closing in
on the team's rendezvous spot.

Dick Carter's map
charts new terrain for Adam,

despite his two-decade-long
search

for Slumach's lost gold mine.

[Adam] I mean,

this is the closest
I've been...

because of this team.

You know, we all bring
different things to the table.

We combine all those skills,
we combine the knowledge,

and you see new things.

Taylor is different
than most people,

because most people,

after a year of looking
for this thing,

give up.

This has actually
fuelled her fire

and, now, I don't think

you could actually
pull her away.

I think her hunger
for finding the truth

is only getting stronger.

[grumbles] Sticks, branches...
sticks, ugh.

Through this whole season,

it's just been incredible--

walking in the footsteps
of my ancestors,

looking for, and reading,
the signs of the past.

It really does feel good

to bring
the truth and light

to who Slumach truly was.

For me, the gold

is actually completing
this story,

completing
this family tree.

It's not just about the gold,

it's about something
so much more.

We find the gold,
we finish Slumach's story.

As I was walking
across these bigger boulders,

I looked down
and I'm like--

it was an engraving.

[♪♪♪♪♪♪]

But it wasn't traditional.

Adam. Come check this out.

Have you seen
anything like this?

[Adam] Let's peel
this moss back.

Whatever it is,
it's old.

[♪♪♪♪♪♪]

You can kinda see...

where the water
goes into the lines.

[Taylor] Yeah.

[Adam] It's like writing,
like, uh...

[Taylor] Oh, yeah,
you can really see that.

[Adam] Yeah.

That's pretty distinct.

Put your hand there for scale.

Yeah.

[Taylor] You know,

I've seen a lot of
different pictographs

and petroglyphs,
and this...

I've never seen anything

like this
or remotely close to this.

It's weird.

It's super out of place.

Like, this is
like a European "A",

like an archaic "A".

Of all places, here...
of all places.

[Narrator] The etched symbol

appears to pre-date
the recorded mining era,

and points directly north.

But what does it mean?

[Adam] It's pointing
to something.

-Yeah.

As gold-hunting season

draws to a close
in the Upper Pitt,

Don and Kru make their way
to the team's rendezvous point.

-You comin'?
-Yeah.

Right behind ya.

[Narrator] For Kru,

the road to Slumach's gold

is paved with lessons learned
along the way.

Kru and I started this path
walking beside each other,

and as the year went on,
we got closer together.

[Kru] Things have changed.

From the mountains,

on the glacier...

frickin' Bute...

you know, you'd have to be
not normal

to not grow
through all these things

I've been going through.

Call this home for tonight, eh?

At least it's got
a little bit of shelter.

[Kru] I've been
obsessed with this

since I was a teenager.

It's surreal,

and it's not a legend anymore,
it's life.

You know,
my life has changed forever.

For the good,
through the bad,

and through
all the challenges.

[Don] There's a word
in my language--

it's [speaks word]--

and what that means--

and I want you
to remember this--

it means "a content spirit".

The one thing that you've made,

that I've seen you make,

is good choices.

Working towards
being balanced...

...that's a choice.

We're doing it the right way.

a sharp mountain range
spells the end of the road.

We knew we were
in the right area,

now we had to figure out
which way he would have gone.

but we got all the indicators,

'cause it looks like

there might be some specks
of free gold here.

immediately stopped.

I think that's still up there.

So, what he found

was the leftovers
of the main mother lode.

for somebody's leftovers.

This is not Slumach's gold,

but somewhere in that area
will be the mine.

where's the gold?

Taylor finds something.

walking around there,

and all of a sudden
I noticed

something inconsistent
in the wall.

I'm like, "okay,
this is interesting."

Oh, shit.

I think I found pictographs
over here!

and then a dot underneath it.

Would that circle represent
a cave, perhaps?

of something.

a valley, almost.

You can see

because it got broken up.

I mean, there's no doubt

that this definitely wasn't
made by First Nations People.

We tell stories
through our pictographs,

and these ones are very, like,
"this is here."

[Kru] This pre-dates Carter!

This isn't graffiti
on a wall somewhere.

'Cause they have a star,
a circle with a dot in it.

Yeah. They're not
telling a story,

they're telling directions.

They look like markers.

to something.

You said you saw tool marks
in that quartz vein.

So whoever was up here
digging out this overhang here--

someone did find gold

and that's why they marked it.

[Kru] And whoever did it

was leading somebody
to something.

We could be looking at
almost a little billboard,

showing us the right way,
and the directions,

if we know how to utilize it.

makes it interesting.

A route to follow
to find Slumach's gold.

of Slumach's lost gold

be spelled out
on the walls of this cave?

[Kru] Is it showing us
the next step?

but our goal is to find out.

What do these markers mean,

and where are they gonna
lead us to next?

People quit all along the way,

We have made it this far,

that none of us could explain.

If you think of this legend

we literally haven't broken
through the second chapter yet.

There's lots more mountains
