[Narrator] Tonight's topic--

lost gold prospector
Stuart Brown.

[Adam] I have heard
this slide show a lot.

No matter
how many times you hear it,

you always get
a little something new.

Stu Brown tried to get
the government to go in there.

[Adam] Stu Brown claims
he had found

gold nuggets
the size of walnuts--

just like the Jackson letter.

Yeah, Stu Brown--

well...

there's something not right.

The government said,

"Well, you can't go in
and mine in a park."

He said, "You don't
have to mine anything.

You reach down,
you pull up nuggets."

[Narrator]
Adam's looking for a new lead,

but instead finds an old rival--

prospector Daryl Friesen.

Adam's become
my sort of nemesis.

Stuart Brown, he thinks,
is just a load of nonsense.

Is the mine located high up?

Is it lower down,

like we see in the next picture?

Daryl will find it one day.

He's certainly out there
looking for it all the time.

[Adam] Daryl's probably

selling treasure maps
in the parking lot.

-Out of his trunk, yeah.
-Yeah.

He always has to be...

better than me...

...but if it wasn't
for Stu Brown,

the legend
would have died years ago.

I think Stuart Brown
is legit, yeah.

[Adam] The Stu Brown thing
is all made up.

Daryl means well.

He's an Internet prospector.

You know, he read a book
on lost treasure,

and this is his target--

Slumach's gold.

He's also looking for
Slumach's lost gold mine.

Who do you think's
gonna find it first?

[Adam] Oh, really?
[laughs] Wow.

[Narrator] Stu Brown's story

and his incredible claim

begins in the early '70s.

While studying satellite images

for British Columbia's
forestry department,

the veteran surveyor claims

he stumbled upon
the motherlode...

...but it was located
in a provincial park.

[Adam]
Well, it's against the law

to mine in a park.

I mean,
you're looking at jail time.

[Narrator] A loyal Canadian,
Stu followed the rules,

and began a 13-year
letter-writing campaign

to the government.

In these letters,

he urged them
to claim the treasure--

"gold worth billions,"

"nuggets up to your ankles"--

and use that gold
to pay the national deficit,

benefitting
all Canadian citizens.

But Stu's plea
fell on deaf ears,

so the gold remains unclaimed

and Stu's story unproven.

The prospecting community

is still divided
over his story...

...and Adam and Kru
are no different.

If you make
extreme claims like that,

you need extreme evidence.

He never produced
any evidence of that gold.

Because he wasn't able to.
Adam, you don't go--

Well, I was able to.

I went looking for it
many times.

-Yeah, but--
-I followed his map.

[Narrator] The map is a sketch
by Slumach historian Don Waite.

Drawn from memory
after a meeting with Stu Brown,

it indicates a deep sinkhole
full of gold,

clues mentioned
in the Jackson letter

and the location
of Slumach's lost mine.

It literally says,

"Terrarosa Lake,
and you follow this stream down,

and there's
a sinkhole of gold."

Okay, well,
I followed that stream down,

and there's no sinkhole of gold.

It's a map well studied

and location
well travelled by Adam

in his two decades of searching.

Day two,

going to a couple of locations
on the Terrarosa Glacier.

Kru's done an awful lot
of research on this.

Yeah, you've done the research,
but I've been there.

I've been all over
North Terrarosa

and it's not here.

None of it adds up.

As far as I can tell,

he was just making this up.

First of all,

this is scribbles
on a piece of paper.

It's not even
really a map, like...

Rob Nicholson's interview
with Stu Brown.

Rob Nicholson's a writer,

he's a historian.

One of the only people
to ever record Stu Brown,

let alone gain his trust.

[Narrator] In 1989,

Nicholson recorded

the first and only interview
with Stu Brown.

Stu describes in detail

a rock dam
and a waterfall near the gold.

[Taylor]

and the thing
that pops out to me

is there's one
censored area here.

Rob Nicholson
removed one name...

and that name was a creek.

If you don't have
the name of this creek,

then it could be anywhere.

Without that one key,
where you gonna be?

It's the indicator.

We just gotta find
the name of this creek.

it's something
I want to check out.

have to follow

every kind of lead that we get,

even if Adam says
it's not worth it.

We shouldn't discount
anything that is out there.

to go down this rabbit hole
of Stu Brown.

Don't think for one minute

that I haven't
heard this before.

On the other side of the city...

Daryl Friesen has been following

a different set of clues
to Slumach's gold.

I've been involved
in searching for this thing

since, really, 1984,
when I first heard about it.

Back in the day
when nobody was looking,

there was no Adam Palmer,

there was no sort of...

competition.

[Narrator] Like Adam,

Daryl has been a member

of the Lost Creek
Gold Mine Society

for decades.

It is 100% completely
ingrained in who I am.

I've spent so much time

thinking about it
over the years.

[Narrator] And those years
of research

point to Stu Brown.

One day,

I was just sitting around,
surfing the net,

and I went to eBay,

and I typed in

"Stuart Brown
Lost Creek Mine",

and this auction pops up,

and inside this auction

are Stuart Brown's
original letters.

[Narrator] Stu's letters
to the government

with his claims to the location
of the lost gold

are convincing...

...but it was another item
in this auction

that had Daryl sold.

Stuart Brown says
when he was up in the country,

he took a picture of the canyon.

[Narrator] A canyon Stu claims

is located in
the general area of the gold...

...a landmark
en route to the motherlode.

On this eBay auction

were the letters
and the snap photo of the canyon

for sale.

[Narrator] The photo

is a missing piece
of the puzzle,

a new clue
in the 100-year-old mystery.

[Daryl] Holy [bleep].
Look at this.

Oh, will you look at that?

If you look
to the mountains there,

it's Terrarosa Glacier.

Stuart Brown describes
this location

like a rock dam

that looks like an old dam

like the Hoover Dam
in the States.

[Narrator] Cross-referencing
the photo with aerial maps,

Daryl believes he's found
Stu Brown's secret location

and the source
of Slumach's gold.

[Daryl] Right there.

That's the location

that Stuart Brown
was talking about--

the rock dam
that looks like a real dam.

That's the lake

where Stuart Brown

waded up to his ankles
in gold nuggets.

That's where I want to go look.

I have found this thing
that nobody else has found

and I'm going to be one

to share it
with all these prospectors

and they're all
going to be in awe.

But accessing the Terrarosa

must be timed with precision.

The weather window
for searching for the mine

is usually like
a two-week window,

when the snow

is completely melted
from the canyon--

and that's now.

Throughout the legend,

this has been
the time to go search.

Right now the door's open,

and in, like, a week in a half,

that door's closed
for the rest of the year.

[Narrator] But the weather
isn't Daryl's only motivation.

It's not just a myth.

It's a very, very
personal search for me.

My dad, he was my reason

for trying to prove
that the thing existed.

He taught me how to pan.

When I'm 12 years old,
13 years old,

in my first pan,
I found a flake...

...and I miss him every day.

Since his father's death

only two years ago,

Daryl's driven
with a new purpose.

I want to go in there

and sort of finish off
that particular chapter for me,

and the only way to do that

is to go to the Stuart Brown
rock dam location,

and I want to just
see it for myself,

get there and say, you know,
I got there,

and hopefully,

my father will be pleased
that I got there.

"It's over.

We finished it.

I finished it.

Okay?

That's what I want to do.

[Kru] We're going to meet
the author of this book,

Rob Nicholson.

He's one of the few people

that have ever even spoken
with Stu Brown about this gold.

He's actually
recorded Stu Brown.

He's met with Stu Brown.

[Narrator] Historian
and veteran Rob Nicholson

holds a key clue

to finding
Stu Brown's secret location.

[Nicholson] I don't think

Stu Brown
was lying one bit at all.

He was a very credible man.

He told me where he got it from.

No, I'm not telling anybody.

Just to be in the legion alone
is a big thing.

It's an honour.

You've served?

I was in Gagetown
with the combat engineers.

Oh, wow.
That means you blew things up.

Oh I love it,

every chance I got.

I've heard a lot
about Stu Brown,

but you're the professional
in this area.

Well, Stu Brown--

I met Stu Brown.

He was a really nice fella.

So you know the exact location
of where this nugget creek is?

Yes, I do...

and I won't go back.

There's stuff out there
that you cannot explain.

There's no reasonable
explanation for them.

How should I put this?
I'm not sure how to put it.

I guess
just tell it like it is, right?

I had an experience up there

that I don't want to repeat
in my lifetime,

thank you very much.

In the quest to find
Slumach's lost gold,

the search
for a critical clue...

There's stuff out there
that you cannot explain.

to reflect on one man's account

of his chilling trip
to Terrarosa in the early '80s.

The last time I was in there--

it's very steep climbing up.

Where it started to level out,

where you can stand up...

I stood up,

and in front of me about--

I don't know,
50 feet in front of me,

was this entity

that looked like
an extremely thin man,

and it said,

"Retreat and live,
proceed and die."

I did back down,

and I ran out.

It took me about seven hours
to run out

and it took me
a day and a half to walk in.

I was scared.

And I was deadly sick
for about six months

and I don't want to repeat that.

I was--
I was given a choice.

I took my choice
and I won't go back.

Wow. Oh, man.

There is absolutely

something strange going on
in the Upper Pitt.

I had no idea
about any of this,

and now that I'm hearing this
out of your mouth,

it's... it's next level.

What do you think it was?

It wasn't...

earthly...

I don't think at all.

It was levitating.

I will not go back to find out.

I had an experience myself,

I've heard of some others
that had.

I don't like
admitting to a curse,

but, like, look at the evidence.

It's starting to add up.

You know?

There's things
that happen out there

that don't make sense.

My own opinion is

if you go in
with the proper intent--

where Stu Brown went in
not to get rich

but to benefit everybody,

where when I went in--

I'll be honest--

I was going to buy castles,
and yachts, and airplanes,

and you name it,

so my intent wasn't pure enough,

and it stopped me.

Your choice.

Because, like,
I'm here for gold--

that's a given--

and I'm not here
to mess things up.

I'm not here to do bad.

But still,
in the back of your head,

you wonder, you know?

as his guide,

prospector Daryl Friesen

of Stuart Brown.

It's turning into fall
on us very quickly.

It's over
within two weeks' time,

the search for this year,

as far as
in the higher elevations go.

Any of the parties out there

that are taking the Lost Mine
seriously this year

and trying to get in there,

they're all doing it right now.

Now I want to go in there

and find the gold.

[Narrator] Daryl's trek

is from Pemberton, B. C. south

to the southern tip
of Terrarosa Glacier.

We have this narrow window,
so we're going for it.

The Stuart Brown location
and the rock dam--

it's an insanely difficult place
to get to on foot,

and it does take
a special breed

to be able to hike in there.

There are other ways
to go about it,

but it's good
to check this route out

as a possible way
to get in there,

to avoid having to take
a helicopter, right?

[Narrator] Almost 15 years ago,

on one of his first expeditions
looking for Slumach's gold,

Daryl's life changed forever.

We're flying up
over Spindle Canyon.

There's, like, the gust of wind,

and the helicopter
starts to shake...

...and we drop out of the sky.

Whoosh! Right out of the sky.

The question
that's going through my head is

when's the pain coming

and when
am I going to die, right?

Lucky to survive.

That sort of changed
everything for me

and sort of even
looking at the curse

and looking at life
in general, basically, right?

Never again, nope.

Never again.

I'm putting on my brand-new
pair of hiking boots.

Fresh expedition, fresh start.

It's go time.

There's no better time to go
look for it than right now.

I've been researching this thing
for a very, very long time.

Flying up over there,
gathering all the clues,

putting it all together.

It's given me

my conviction that, yes,
this is where it is.

I have enough evidence.

I know this is the right spot.

recovery's even harder.

and I know my team
will be strong,

and I know they'll finish.

near the Terrarosa.

The clouds have cleared,
it's a beautiful day.

My energy level's up.

Following his own set of clues

to Stu Brown's
secret location,

Daryl Friesen pushes on.

[Daryl] I am closing in

on one of
the most famous locations

in Lost Mine history--

the Stuart Brown
rock dam location.

But the most challenging terrain

lies ahead--

a massive gain in elevation.

I mean, I'm an okay hiker,
but I'm not a mountaineer.

Climbing that hill...

...it's going to be epic.

[Taylor]
So are we getting close

to where we're supposed to be?

Pretty soon.

[Narrator] Meanwhile,

Taylor and Adam
are closing in on their goal.

Where we're going, actually,
the headwaters of Stoney Creek,

is pretty remote.

-There's Stoney Creek.

have led to one destination.

There's only one guy, I think,

that could possibly be
in that helicopter--

Adam Palmer.

How did I know
that's who that would be?

he was expecting us.

I wasn't expecting him.

Did you walk up here?

[Adam] Well, Daryl and I
are polar opposites.

Daryl is the one
reading about these legends,

and I'm the one
actually looking for them.

and I wish him the best of luck,

but I hate being in his shadow

and being second place.

to actually get up this far.

You're familiar with

They had a picture in it

that Stuart took
when he was up there.

that proves
that Stuart was here.

That's where I'm going.

there's little choice

The more knowledge we have
at this point,

the more we're going to find.

to where that picture is

The fact that he's here now

and not behind a computer,

I don't know if teaming up
with him is the best choice.

[Daryl] I've done a lot
of Google Earth studying

and have a sort of understanding
of the reality.

[Adam] Well, it's just like
Google Earth--

just instead of the mouse,
you use your legs.

[laughs]

We're not leaving him behind.

I don't care who you are,

I would never leave you behind
in that terrain.

[Daryl] A butterfly
keeps landing on everybody.

[Taylor] Definitely a sign.

[Adam] It's a messenger.

[Taylor] He's still there.

[Daryl] On Google Earth,
this looked easier.

continue
their 23-kilometre hike--

to what they believe could be
Stu Brown's fabled rock dam.

As the crow flies,

it's, like,
four or five kilometres.

The problem is
we don't have wings.

We have to get from Stoney Creek
to the top of a glacier.

That's 3,000 feet of elevation
we have to gain

and you don't gain it
in a straight line.

It's lots of ups and downs.

We have, you know,

our backpacks
with 50, 60 pounds.

That's slowing us down.

Now we have Daryl with us,
so that's slowing us down.

You know, we're talking
two days of hard travel.

[Daryl]
I gotta chill for a second.

I'm going to vomit.

Just for a second.

[Daryl gags]

[Adam] The funny thing
about the mountains

is you'll see the real people

when you put them
in that environment.

When you push people
to their limits,

that's when you actually see
who they really are.

[Adam]

-[Daryl] Wow.

[Daryl] It just looks epic.

This is the first time
I've seen Terrarosa Glacier

from the ground.

It's reaching a target

I've been thinking about
for years.

Trying to get to.

It feels fantastic.

[Narrator] Terrarosa--

named after the red earth
and high mineral content.

[Daryl] Iron.

[Adam]
Back when the earth was fire.

It's got tons of indications
pointing to minerals.

The quartz vein
runs all along there,

along the bluff,

runs alongside the mountain,

and then sort of disappears
around the corner

into the area

that we are really interested
in going.

Just like
the Yellow Brick Road.

[Daryl]
We're closing in on our canyon.

I'm enthusiastic about it.

I think we--
we're going to find something.

I really do.

Now we just gotta get
to the right spot.

Because there's something there.

I hope.
