But, you see, God has brought you here

to reveal something to you

that could possibly change your future

and the course of many people.

But I don't believe in God.

I know you don't believe in God,

but your lack of belief
doesn't make him any less real.

Let's say I go along with this, this joke,

and let's say that a
nonexistent God is real,

why on Earth would God bring me here,

to the middle of Nowheresville
in the year 2036?

What on Earth could God
possibly have to show me here?

It's not what, Jennifer, it's who.

God wants to show me someone here in 2036?

Yeah, that's his plan.

Who does he want to show me?

We'll get to that in a minute.

But first, I want to ask you a question.

Okay.

Have you ever done anything

that you wished you
could go back and change?

Sure, hasn't everyone?

But you, what would
you go back and change?

What is the one thing that you wish

you could go back and do again,

but differently this time?

See, I'm not here to drag up the past.

All people make mistakes.

It's just (sighs) that is why you're here,

to see a future that could be

if just one choice was made differently.

Jennifer, all of our
lives, we make decisions,

good ones, not so good ones,

and with each and every decision,

those choices, large or
small, they affect our future,

they become who we become,

and, perhaps, they can
change the course of history.

Who are you?

Who I am is not really
important right now,

it's who you are.

I'm simply just a messenger,
a helper, a guide, really.

And you've come here
to help me, to guide me?

Mm-hm, yeah.

I'm gonna try.

Let's say I believe all of this,

why me, why now, and why 2036?

I help people all the time,

some, like yourself,
actually get to see me.

Others just know that I'm at work.

I'm here to help you see what could be.

You see, none of this really exists.

I mean, not in your reality at least.

This cafe, this town, these people,

they're simply shadows of what could be.

Like the two men playing cards,

one of those guys over there

is riding high on Wall
Street back in 2019.

He's making all the money
he could possibly make.

He has a big home, he has a
big yard, he has a fancy car,

and he can buy literally
anything he wants.

This is the path that
he's chosen for himself,

to make as much money as possible,

but I brought him here to
let him reevaluate his life,

and let him see that money-making

is not the most important
thing in the world.

Here, he's content just to play cards

with a newfound friend.

Here, he's actually going to church,

and he's on a committee
to help raise finances

for homeless people in the cities.

In 2019, he's a very different man

with only one all-consuming thing,

and that is to make money.

And here, I'm showing him a
more simple, more abundant life,

things that he's missing out on.

And without friends and family,

he's gonna learn he has nothing.

So what is this place, heaven?

No, no, this is just merely
a shadow of things to come

or things that could be.

Take Billy, for example,
typing away on his laptop.

I brought him here from 1987.

You see, in 1985, he's a
student in New York with a PhD.

And in a life that was supposed to be

full of happiness and wonder,

his wife got killed in
a drive-by shooting.

Billy has spent the last two years

tracking down that shooter,

but not to bring him to justice
or to put him behind bars,

but to kill him.

I brought him here so he could

maybe find some evidence and whatnot.

And so he can take it back

and give it to the local authorities

so that that guy can be brought

to real justice, the legal way.

And?

Well, he's gonna give his findings

back to the police when he gets back.

You see the chef?

He's the shooter's son.

And after serving 15 years for his crime,

the shooter, who was only 18 back in 1987,

he'll be released from prison.

He'll get a job, and he'll start a family.

His son's a good man,
nothing like his father.

And he'll be given a chance at life

because his father wasn't shot down

in an act of coldblooded
violence, but will now live.

So you're some kind of,
like, time traveling angel,

or a fairy godmother?

Even though you're obviously a man.

Something like that.

And you bring people
here, to Hope Springs,

to show them the errors of their ways?

This is one place I bring 'em,

people that perhaps need time to think.

You have to admit, it's a good
place to sit back and think.

It's quiet.

Others, I take to different places,

to the future, to the past,

sometimes to the distant past
or even the distant future,

but all with one single purpose in mind:

a chance to take a step back,

an opportunity to rethink things,

and have the freedom to make a change.

So all these people,

do they always choose to change

their decisions and their ways?

Sadly, no.

Some people can just be so stubborn.

But, you know, a lot do, and
for the better, I might add.

So why am I here?

Well, as I said, I brought
you here to meet someone.

Meet someone?

Who?

(gentle piano music)

The young woman, Madison.

She's why I brought you here.

Madison?

But why her?

Madison is a very remarkable young lady.

18 years old and she already sees the best

in every person that she meets.

She was born to a single mother.

She was raised in Seattle

until her mother contracted cancer

and died when she was only 10 years old.

Then she came here to Hope Springs,

to live with her grandmother.

She's a hard worker and
a straight A student,

always has a smile on her face,

even though she's experienced so much loss

in such a short period of time.

She sounds like a nice person,

but why'd you bring me here to meet her?

Jennifer, I know about the baby,

and I know what you're
thinking about doing,

and I really think a cup
of Madison's special blend

is exactly what you need right now.

then you'll know that she died of cancer

when she was only 30 years old.

I want to eventually help people like her.

Yeah, I know.

I still can't believe she passed so young.

She was an amazing woman, had
her whole life ahead of her.

She was a brilliant student.

She got accepted in the Harvard Law

right out of high school,

and then she found out she was pregnant.

She was only 19 years old.

She gave up all her dreams
just so she could have me.

And then a few years
later, she got cancer.

But even then, she
always put others first.

She always told me that
throughout our lives,

we make choices, good
ones and not so good ones,

but each and every one of
those choices, large or small,

affects the future, who we become,

and even the course of history itself.

And then she'd always shake
her finger at me and say,

"Always do everything in your power

"to make good choices
in life, young lady."

She sounds very wise.

Oh, she was.

She was amazing.

But, above all, I am who
I am today because of her.

I mean, let's face it,

I wouldn't be here today if
she had made the wrong choice.
