Surface gold has been found here
in dried up creeks and rivers

since the gold rush of the 1890s.

But Shane and Russell
are searching for a Paleo channel,

an ancient river system

filled in over 20,000 years ago

by the events
of Australia's last Ice Age.

If the can expose the channel
and get down to its bottom,

they could unearth the mother lode.

You can see where the old
flow channel used to be.

It tucks around there.

So, we know that this was
an old stream through here.

Down the bottom here
you've got big lumps of ironstone

and that's heavy.

So, if there's going to be gold,

it's going to be alongside
the ironstone

at a bit of depth here.

You've got four wheels that are,

got 30 odd tonne so you got roughly
7.5 tonne on each wheel.

With a bulldozer
spreads it across the road,

across the tracks,

the loaders sink into the dirt
really easily.

The problem with these
wheeled machines is that

this is soft ground
and you've gone down into it

and if we've got gold

that falls into one of these
trenches down here,

that's a ten grammer, 12 grammer,
and laying in an odd shape,

we won't hear it because
I've gotta basically push out dirt,

paydirt, six inches above this,

well, that's nearly two foot deep
by the time you get down to here.

The ground will need to be
levelled off,

filling the wheel ruts

and potentially burying any gold
too deep for detection.

We will lose gold to these trenches

and it won't be recovered
ever again.
