Winter is coming,

and we're a long ways
from 450 ounces.

You know, we walk
away from here and

we're gonna put gold
in people's pockets,

it changes their lives.

That's how
they pay their bills.

So, we've got a lot
of work ahead of us.

I think the strategic move
right now is not real strategic.

You know, God forbid for something
to happen big to this plant,

we won't be able to fix it in
time and it means operation is gonna stop.

[Jason Sanchez] Better hope
this [bleep] good.

[narrator] As the frost thaws,
in the Cottonwood cut...

The next bet's I go down...

it's always that mystery.

[narrator] After two
gold weighs,

Jason battles to stay on the
tail of the rich pay layer.

Well, every time I go deeper
in the Cottonwood,

I like to continue to get pans from
it to make sure that I'm not running into,

like, complete dead zone.

There's no reason to keep going.
We learned that.

I'm gonna run a pan, man.
Gotta be a quick one, though.

Yeah, this is one
of the hardest places to read.

It's all the same color,
it's all grey and black.

And because
it's such a young formation,

I don't think it's had enough time to
settle the gold all the way to bedrock.

It's basically
we're chasing a pay layer

that's flood gold and it
hasn't gone below that level

that it was deposited at.

[exclaims]

So that's a really
good pan for here.

But the nice thing is

it's not all super fine.

We've got little, little pieces in there.
Little tiny ones.

I gotta get as much of this
dirt to the plant as I can

before the season ends.

It's really hard to repair

I mean, these rocks
are unforgiving.

So, it's one of those things.
You start running faster.

There's no ways around it.

It's running like ten yards
an hour in this thing, but...

Do I wanna be around people

40 inches long.

And, uh, sometimes if you try
to temporary something,

you end up doing it
all over again.

So, it's not an easy decision.

Chances of finding a belt, getting
it by tomorrow are pretty slim,

to be honest. Um, the way
things have been going,

I mean, everything I think
should take a week,

it's usually two to three weeks.
That'll be the end of the season.

very important phone call
from Jonathan at Willow Creek.

You know, my dad got taken

hard rock miner,

a new opportunity.

entire property.

test results halted all plans.

Feeling pretty mixed emotions

that it caused my family.

I mean, you really couldn't

You know, I get to come back to the
ground that caused my family a bunch of problems.

I'm a little nervous about
the weather here in Valdez.

I've heard a lot of stories
about dumping a lot of snow.

So I'm just trying
to get a sense

of how much longer I can stay.

at Valdez airport.

So, I'm just trying

So, the current weather system
that we're having right now

- could be done in a couple days.

I've seen snow come in

and dump eight feet
in two days.

- That's a lot of snow, Dave.

Glacier Creek claim five miles

off road
in the Chugach Mountains,

heavy snow could potentially trap
the crew in the mine site.

So, you see this dome mountain here?
- Yeah.

That is Sugarloaf.
That's about 3,500 feet to the top.

And there's a local, it's not
a myth, but we all go by this.

When there's snow
on Sugarloaf,

there'll be snow on the ground
here in six weeks.

Think I got a couple
of weeks left?

I think it's coming.

an idea.

We might be packing up

The next big weather storm
could hit

and trap us, so I've got

to get this belt on...

new 30-foot belt through the Eagle.

The fact that this belt's up and
going means we're that much closer to rolling.

When we have good weather,

a chance at going over 450 ounces.

Well, at this point, you
know, we've had some setbacks.

This is the time we have
to put in the hours.

If the boss told we're to work

As much run time as we get in,

We're gonna start working longer hours.

And now, I have
the opportunity to go back.

I never would have thought
or never could have orchestrated

what has happened
in the past year.

I feel like I have to
take this opportunity and run with it.

That's what's best
for my family.

If you don't appreciate me and
don't respect me that you can

call and talk to me about
moving hours

and doing whatnot, having to work
harder and longer for his ill decisions,

then we might have to move on.

And that might be today.

at Glacier Creek.

to catch up,

the team begins its first
dark-to-dark shift.

the pump has failed.

[Jason] Dave, Nate...
You gotta copy.

Cut's flooded, guys.

Damn it!

It's flooded. I don't know
what's wrong.

I need to get to my pumps,
I need to figure this [bleep] out,

and try and start getting this
sucked down.

All right. What's going on?

She just will not pump.

Any bit of pay I had is going
under water again.

We'll pull the suction off and see.
It's all in all to do right now.

I hear something in here.

- [Jason] Whatcha got?
- All right, hold that up.

- Something in there?
- Yeah.

[Nathan] Oh, boy...

- [Jason] Holy [bleep], Nate.

It's gotta be something between the pump and the engine.
It has to be.

The only thing I know to do
now is I have to pull it out, Jason.

All right, man.

Stupid rock.

[narrator] The key component
of the water pump

is an impeller to draw water
into the machine.

But overnight, the pump has
sucked in a large rock

which has become jammed
in the system.

Nate hopes that the coupler,

the engine's rubber fitting

has done its job and sheared,

allowing the motor
to keep spinning,

saving the pump engine
from catastrophic damage.

[Nathan] Damn rock. Always.

Get some more of this
sheet metal off,

so we can kinda get down
to the heart of the operation.

Well, I'll be damned.
Look 'er there.

So, you got these splits
and this coupler right here.

[narrator] The coupler
is completely sheared

after saving the motor
from the rock jam.

You know, it's got
a part number on it.

And hopefully, they will have
the part number exactly.

And we'll be good to go. But...

You just never know
these days.

[Chris] And I can't tell you,
KC, how frustrated I am

to see this cut start
going under water.

[narrator] With the pump
out of action,

and Jason unable to access
the cut,

the crew runs dangerously low
on pay.

[Jason] I'm actually taking a really thin
layer across the entire width of the cut.

And just trying to get enough pay,
you know, to last through the day.

Maybe two feet is all
he's got there.

And I don't know
if it'll last the day.

So, we may be fighting...

a losing battle.

Coming in on
your left side, Jason.

Think that little pump's
gonna keep up?

I'm just worried about...

keeping enough pay
to that plan.

- It's about it, isn't it?

[Dave] Got a half-a-day here.

- It's gonna be tight.

I could pretty easily
strip that where that pump is.

Strip all that vegetation off
and get in some pay.

[Dave] Worst case scenario, it takes
a week to get that coupling.

Then I'm kinda screwed.

Yeah, we're running
out of time.

And any day, we could wake up
and be kicked outta here.

I'm up here getting
this area ready.

Got about five or six feet
of material

that I gotta move in order to
get Jason in here.

We're gonna call it
our emergency pay.

the plant running,

Dave moves to higher ground
above the water table,

stripping organics, revealing a
layer of emergency pay

20 feet above
the Cottonwood cut.

All season long,
we've been fighting the water,

fighting the weather,

and now we're fighting
getting parts.

So, yeah.
It's very, very frustrating.

I should be down there

in the good gold, but

all I can do, I gotta keep us
in pay, and basically get what we can.

Before winter shuts us out.

[narrator] After dozing
for four hours,

Dave has stripped almost 500
square yards of organics.

That's it, I'm done.

Got to the corner,
call it emergency pay,

but it's gonna get us by
until Nate can get us that pump.

Nose is off the gravel, but it's
got some pretty big rocks in there.

Just keep that bird in pay

Dave has opened up
the emergency cut.

That gives us a little bit
of time.

If we wanna get down

to where the good gold's at,
we're gonna need that pump fixing.

You know, we've hit our gold twice since we've been here.

This year seems to be
thrown away.

And I didn't leave my house
for a throwaway season.

That's irritating.

I don't need everything, I just
need this piece here in the middle.

This piece actually attaches
to the engine.

And this piece actually
attaches to the pump.

And it's got rubber on it
that gives it a flex.

While as you can see on
this one here, it's busted out.

And this one here
is basically solid.

So, we'll put that in place.

Ooh, baby doll, she's right. Good.

Oh, that was kinda good.

And start putting it together.

This is the pump,
this is the engine.

Basically, this coupler,
attach them together.

This will last a long time, long
as we don't come into another jam.

If we're gonna have a plan
to hit our gold,

we gotta get this pump up
and going as fast as possible.

Give her a couple little
love taps, get her just right.

I think everybody is,
you know,

tired, wore out.
It's not good for us right now. It's really not.

[drill whirs]

Pain in the ass.

It's gonna go in there

So hopefully, this will
get us going.

Get down to that good pay we've

So, the hardest part is done.

of that emergency cut.

It was a little bit of a pain for
the Eagle, but this is where we need to be

if we're gonna have
a fighting chance at our gold.
