With you I killed the best of men, Hamzah Ibn Abd Al-Muttalib;

and with you I killed the worst man, Musailamah.

Will I now be able to walk among people like one of them,

without thinking that they whisper to one another: 'this is Hamzah's killer'?

We were let down first by the Bedouins.

They got us on the retreat, leading us to do what we are not good at.

Then Khalid ordered that each group should be clearly distinguished,

fighting under their own flag.

This meant that people were too shy to flee.

This led to the achievement of victory; all praise be to God.

I bear witness,

that Khalid kept moving forward, seeking martyrdom most determinedly

and he remained steadfast until victory.

We had to appeal to him saying: 'You are the commander, Khalid.

You should not be so forward and close to the enemy.

If you were to be killed, the army will weaken.' He said:

'I know what you are saying, but I cannot hold back

and I fear that we will be defeated.'

Had martyrdom been closer to the one who is most forward and closest to the enemy,

Khalid would have been the first martyr.

What has your uncle, Zaid Ibn Al-Khattab, done?

He sought martyrdom and God blessed him with it.

Zaid is killed while you are alive! Shouldn't you be ashamed of yourself?

He prayed for martyrdom and he was granted that.

I tried hard to have it, but I was denied it.

May God bestow His grace on Zaid Ibn Al-Khattab.

He has been ahead of me in the best two things:

belief in Islam and martyrdom.

He fought very hard and killed many enemy soldiers.

He also killed Al-Rajjal Ibn Anfawah, Musailamah's army commander.

By God, I will never forget him.

And I hope to meet him at God's messenger's

basin in the life to come, God willing.

He was one of the kindest...

and most sincere of people.

He always gave me preference over himself, ever since we were young.

I was hard,

but he was gentle.

Peace be upon you.

My brother, Abdullah.

Martyred in Yamamah?

Are you crying, Abu Jandal,

when God has willed to grace your brother with martyrdom?

He is now with a company better than ours and in a life better than this one.

We should weep for ourselves

as we do not know what God will do with us in what remains of our lives.

But, father, we know what we should be doing.

He was always in the forefront, supporting the truth.

When he believed in something, he would act on it, caring little for the consequences.

He was quick to act on what he knew.

Why should we stay here in Makkah, father,

when all these campaigns of jihad are setting out of Madinah by the Caliph's orders.

I have resolved to stay there,

until the Caliph sends me in a campaign wherever he wishes.

I may thus join my brother.

I will follow your suit, Abu Jandal.

I will follow your suit and the suit of Abdullah, my son.

May God bestow His grace on him.

At last!

I have always said: "it is high time for him to be free of his father's chains.

Indeed.

At last, I am now free of my father's chains.

I am now free of my father's chains.

Abu Bakr! Many of those who knew the Qur'an by heart were killed in Al-Yamamah.

I fear that this will continue in forthcoming battles.

I feel that you should give an order that the Qur'an should be collected

in one complete copy,

so that it does not remain in various portions in scrolls, on bones,

tree branches and in people's memories.

How am I to do something that was not done by God's messenger?

It is certainly good.

God has undertaken to keep it intact.

A part of this is that He will facilitate the means to ensure its preservation

and guide His servants to take the necessary steps.

I have thought long on this,

ever since we heard of the death of our friends at Yamamah,

and now I am all for it.

Yes, by God; it is good. Go ahead and do it, Abu Bakr.

It is a good idea.

It should make it easier to keep intact.

To whom shall we entrust the task of collecting it?

Zaid Ibn Thabit. He is a trustworthy young man with good sense.

He used to write the Qur'an when it was revealed.

Peace be to you, Ibn Al-Khattab.

Peace be to you both.

How are you now with Islam, Uyaynah?

I am a Muslim, by the grace of God. That affair is over, Umar.

- How about your old crony? - You mean Tulaihah Al-Asadi?

I heard that he has settled with the Kalb tribe, and that he reverted to Islam.

Has he abandoned soothsaying?

That was a means to an end which he did not achieve.

Then he was forced to acknowledge the truth, as I was.

Well, what is up now?

We would like you to witness this, as Abu Bakr has ordered.

What is this?

I and my friend, Al-Aqra' Ibn Habis, came to the Caliph and said:

'We have a barren piece of land that has neither grass nor any benefit.

If you wish you could give it to us

and we may be able to till it and grow some plants in it.

Perhaps God may make it useful.

He consulted those who were with him and they advised him to do so.

He wrote us this document and those present witnessed it.

He said, however, it is not valid unless Umar witnesses it.

He asked us to come to you for that. Here we are.

Has he done so, now? Let me have a look.

Why are you doing this, Ibn Al-Khattab? It is the Caliph's document.

Hasn't he said that it is not valid without me witnessing it?

By God, I do not accept. Go back.

What have you done for Islam to deserve to be rewarded with a large piece of land

to be your private property?

Don't you know that God's messenger gave us some of the spoils of war

after the Battle of Hunain?

God's messenger wanted to win your hearts over when Islam was still weak.

Now Islam is strong by God's grace. Go away and do your best.

May God abandon you unless you do.

You are of the type who are scarce when the going is rough,

but in the forefront when rewards are available.

You are certainly hard and rough. We will complain to the Caliph.

Who is the Caliph, you or Umar?

He, had he wished and accepted.

Tell me about this land that you gave to these two:

is it your own property or the public property of the Muslims?

It is public property.

Who gave you the right to assign it to these two,

to the exclusion of the Muslim community?

I consulted those around me and they advised me to do so.

Have you then consulted all Muslims and ensured they were happy with it?

They all are the owners of this land.

I told you before that you are better able to undertake this than me,

but you forced me to accept the responsibility.

I praise God that I did, giving it to one who is better than me.

He is the best person after God's messenger, Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq.

This letter comes from Al-Muthanna Ibn Harithah

whose prowess in war we all know as he fought alongside Al-Alaa' Ibn Al-Hadrami

against the apostates of Bahrain. He comes from that area.

When the war against the apostates there was over, he did not stop.

He led his people chasing the Persians who helped the apostates.

He fought them and went deep into their territories until he reached the two rivers:

Tigris and the Euphrates.

He established his presence at the borders of Iraq,

so that we won't be attacked by the Persians and their allies, the Arabs of Iraq.

He did all this at his own initiative. In his letter, he says

that if he is appointed as governor of his people

and those of the adjacent areas of Persia, he will take care of that side.

What do you think?

Al-Muthanna himself is one of the best people, as far as we know.

He is not an ordinary person of unknown ancestry.

I do not think that he has requested the position for any worldly gain for himself.

He is, after all, the chief of his people.

However, he wants his authority to be enhanced by the Caliph's endorsement.

He will then be able to call on people to fight with him on this condition.

He will also be able to seek reinforcements from you against our common enemy.

The Persians would not leave him alone to do what he is doing near the borders of Iraq.

They, however, are preoccupied with the chaos in their own kingdom.

As we have heard.

If the danger represented by Al-Muthanna increases,

and if they fear the loss of their land next to Al-Heerah,

they would raise an army against him. He is no match for them.

With the Persians we cannot rely on raids and skirmishes.

We must raise against them armies to fight them in their own territories

over the land under their control,

until God fulfils His promise to His messenger (peace be upon him).

Yes, Caliph. This is indeed the right view and the right time.

The whole of Arabia is now subject to the rule of Islam.

Our soldiers have gained great expertise in warfare,

which was totally unknown to the Arabs before Islam.

If the Arabs set out to fight the Persians, their bonds will strengthen

and, with God's help, they become like a solid building.

They will forget their old grievances and vengeance killings.

If we are to go ahead, then this is the appropriate time.

When you receive this letter of mine,

march to Iraq so as to enter from its south-west, starting with Al-Ubullah.

Try to win its people over, calling on them to believe in God.

If they do not respond, then take the jizyah from them to acknowledge your authority.

If they refuse, fight them.

Treat the farmers well, leaving them to stay in their land, without taxing them.

Do not force anyone to join you.

I have also ordered Al-Muthanna Ibn Harithah to join you,

but you are his commander as long as you stay with him.

If you leave him, he continues to be the governor as he was.

I will reinforce you with Al-Qa'qa' Ibn Amr Al-Tameemi,

who is a man equal to one thousand men.

An army with Al-Qa'qa' in its ranks does not suffer defeat.

O you Muslims! This is our first battle against the Persians,

and it will have great consequences.

You know that they have beaten us to the water.

We will fight them over it.

I believe that the water will be won

by the party which shows more perseverance

and by the more honourable army.

I challenge your commander to a duel.

God is supreme!

From Khalid Ibn Al-Waleed to the Prophet's successor, Abu Bakr al-Siddiq.

I praise God to you. We met the enemy at Kadhimah,

and God helped us to achieve victory.

We killed a large number of their soldiers.

All praise be to God.

I assigned Al-Muthanna Ibn Harithah to chase those of them who fled.

The Persian Emperor sent them large reinforcements

commanded by one of their nobility.

I sped to support Al-Muthanna at a place called Al-Madhar,

and joined him before he met the Persian armies,

who did not expect our arrival.

We hardly set down our equipment before we attacked them,

and we were soon able to kill their commanders. This demoralized them.

Before long they were fleeing before us.

God is supreme!

God is supreme!

Shortly after Al-Madhar,

we encountered other armies at Al-Walajah.

They also raised against us their allies from the tribe of Bakr Ibn Wa'il,

whom they thought to know better how to fight us.

They gave their command to one of their best commander, Bahman Jathaweih.

I divided my army into three divisions, ordering two divisions to remain unobserved.

When the fighting got fierce, they would take the enemy by surprise,

attacking them from the side and the rear. We thus achieved a great victory over them.

God is supreme!

God is supreme!

- God is supreme! - God is supreme!

God is supreme!

Shortly after that we met them again at a place called Ullais,

where they amassed against us a great army,

trying to take revenge for their defeat.

When I arrived with my army close to their army,

and they were attending to their normal tasks, I drove them away.

We arrived fully ready for war,

while they thought that we would encamp first and then marshal our army.

We attacked them from all sides until God granted us victory.

Beware.

The Muslims are coming. The Muslims are coming.

Our gains included several ships

which we will use to transport our men and equipment to Al-Heerah,

All praise be to God.

People of Madinah,

God has granted us victory over the Persian army.

This is their first debacle,

and God will bring this to completion, if He so wills,

until our soldiers enter Al-Mada'in by God's help.

Your lion, Khalid Ibn Al-Waleed, faced their lion and won.

Women cannot give birth to someone like Khalid.

- God is supreme. - God is supreme.

God is supreme. God is supreme.

God is supreme.

Now the people of the boats should board as we arranged.

The rest will march close to the river.

We shall not stop until we see the palaces of Al-Heerah.

The true promise is close to fulfilment.

It will not be long before you see Al-Khawarnaq & the palaces of Al-Heerah.

Whoever gains control of Al-Heerah controls the whole of Iraq.

Al-Heerah at last.

Our Lord, fulfil Your promise and Your messenger's promise.

By God, I heard him foretelling this at the time

when he first declared his message in public.

He sat with his back to the Kaabah, calling on people to believe.

Some believed him; some disbelieved; others ridiculed him.

It never occurred to me at the time that I will be the first to see it,

and that God will choose me to take it.

My Lord, forgive me what I did in the past.

All my gratitude is to You for what You subsequently enabled me to do.

- What are you doing, Abu Bakr? - It is getting very cold.

These are blankets I am distributing to the poor widows in Madinah.

May I accompany you so as to earn a little reward, God willing.

Yes.

Abu Bakr! I see that you are distributing this wealth that God has granted us,

dividing it equally between people.

How can you treat those who have undertaken the two immigrations

and prayed to the two Qiblahs on equal basis with those who embraced Islam

after Makkah has fallen to Islam?

Shouldn't you give preference to those who were in the forefront and sacrificed much?

Those early Muslims who gave their all did what they did for God's sake

and they receive their reward from Him.

What I am giving is a living allowance in

which equality is better than preferable treatment.

I shall not give preference to an early Muslim over a latecomer,

a free man over a slave, a woman over a maid.

They all are my subjects and we all are God's dependents.

Shouldn't you appoint a guard for the treasury?

Why should I need one when I am dividing it between people

or spending it to equip the soldiers? Nothing remains that needs to have a guard.

Take this to keep warm in this cold weather.

May God reward you richly, Caliph.

I have called you today to consult you on a matter of great importance.

We cannot at any time make a full list of God's blessings.

God has blessed us with the conquest of Al-Heerah and those parts of Iraq.

I am thinking of mobilizing you and our people against the Byzantines in Syria.

I would like everyone to state their views.

All praise be to God who gives goodness to whomever He chooses of His creation.

Whenever we hasten to some good option we find you there ahead of us all.

This is God's blessing which He bestows on whom He chooses.

I wanted to meet you on the subject you have just mentioned,

but God has willed to delay it until you tell us now about it.

You are right; may God guide you to every right result.

The reasons for liberating Iraq

are not greater than those calling for liberating Syria.

Indeed, God's messenger has paved the way to it,

with the expeditions of Mu'tah, Tabuk and Usamah's army.

Ever since Islam gained power here and the Arabs flocked to it,

the Byzantines have been making things difficult for the people of the areas

adjacent to them in Arabia.

They launch raids against the Arab tribes that have embraced Islam in those areas,

and they kill our messengers and advocates.

Now that they have learnt of our victory, with God's help, in Iraq,

they must be worried. They will fear to lose areas of their land.

Unless we raise armies to fight them in Syria,

they will be raising armies against us and will fight us here in our land.

Go ahead, Caliph. Go ahead.

Caliph, these are the Byzantines, a very mighty proposition.

You can send to Yemen and the tribes of Rabeeah and Mudar

to reinforce you with their troops.

You can then attack the Byzantines, either leading the army yourself

or appointing any commander you choose.

What do you think, may God bless you with His grace?

I believe, Caliph, that you give good counsel to the people of this faith

and you care for them. When you have a certain view

and you are sure that it is for the benefit and welfare of the Muslim community,

go ahead and put it into effect. Your good intentions are never in doubt.

Uthman has stated the truth.

Whatever you feel good, take the necessary steps to put it into action.

We will listen and obey. We do not suspect the validity of your views.

I support Umar, Uthman and Saad.

What do you think, Abu Al-Hasan?

I think you are well guided, bringing good results.

Whether you lead the army yourself or send someone as commander,

you will be victorious, God willing.

Get ready to encounter the Byzantines in Syria.

I shall appoint your commanders

and shall reinforce you with fighters from Yemen, Mudar and Rabeeah.

Obey your Lord.

Never disobey your commanders.

Ensure that your intentions and actions are good.

God is indeed with those who remain God-fearing and those who do good.

O you people!

Join the jihad campaign against your enemy, the Byzantines in Syria.

O you Muslims!

The Caliph calls upon you to join the jihad against the Byzantine in Syria.

So, hasten to the achievement of your Lord's forgiveness,

and a paradise as vast as the heavens and the earth.

Abu Bakr!

How can I call out to people to join the campaign of jihad, then I stay behind?

I have decided to join them in this campaign in Syria. I seek your permission.

I cannot spare you, Bilal.

Abu Bakr, if you bought me and set me free those many years ago for yourself,

you can hold me. If you did that for God's sake, let me do God's work.

No, by God. You know, Bilal, how much I love you.

It will make me sad to look around and find that Madinah is without you,

and that you no longer do the call to prayer. I will miss you.

You know that whenever I did the call to prayer after the Prophet had passed away,

I was overcome by tears and my voice would not help me.

I will not do the call to prayer again.

That's alright, Bilal.

May God help me when you leave.
