and family to come
and celebrate it with them.

I have had a real heightened level
of appreciation

for family gatherings.

We're celebrating getting
back together.

type of Christmas dinner.

I know that we wouldn't normally

a marquee outside the front.

It's Christmas with the family.

Doesn't matter what we do,
it's going to be perfect.

As a lot of Dick and Angel's friends

haven't been to the chateau for
years,

they would like it
to look at its best.

And while most people would maybe
just tidy up,

Dick and Angel have bigger plans.

Like pimping up the paving -

its new curves complementing
the chateau's circular towers.

Also at the front,

five new windows
ordered earlier in the year,

have arrived to replace
the old rotten ones.

Oh, babe, this is such a big clay.

Arthur and Dorothy won't have
to worry about this window.

What were cracked, draughty,
150-year-old windows

are now ready for the 21st century.

Other than retaining its original
metalwork,

everything else is new.

Oak-framed, double-glazed
and exactly what Dick

and Angel wanted since
the day they arrived.

and it hasn't fallen out.

Now, all the building work around
the chateau's been done,

And top of the agenda is picking two
perfect Christmas trees.

nobody will take this tree.

But with so many fantastic firs
to choose from,

it can be hard to see the wood
for the trees.

As always, this isn't easy.

So, what's great about this is that

So, obviously, I've just cut it
so I don't have to sew the edge.

But the first thing that I'm going
to do

is actually turn over my outside,

because, obviously,
when it goes like this,

that's already there.
And, all of a sudden,

you can actually see how simple
this is.

And once Angel's made them...

for Arthur and Dorothy
to personalise.

We're basically elves.

But with both Dick
and Angel's families to do,

there are rather a lot of them.

Living at the chateau is all that
Arthur and Dorothy can remember.

Because, when they first arrived
here, they were both rather young.

But they soon settled in.

And while school gave them their new

The bad news is that it is quite
wonky to your right.

to eat oysters at Christmas.

And, as it's now also traditional
for the Strawbridges

to fetch them fresh off

has happened every year since

This is the first year

that I think I've not even had
to show Dorothy.

I've lost my secateurs.

They're a present that Daddy bought
me when we first got together.

But they're now mine.

Kind of the story of our life,
isn't it?

There is two things for me that make
me really feel Ch ristmassy.

One is getting and putting up our
Christmas tree. Yeah.

girls' trip

with home-made linen napkins.

I've got to do napkins with names on
because I've always clone that

and I couldn't not do it now.
But also, gosh, I need crackers.

So, I thought I would do
the two together

and have crackers with linen
with their names on. Done.

To make it feel very French you kind
of need these little red stripes.

For me, it really just
screams France.

Lovely. OK.

And once the names are on
the napkins,

all they need are some corny jokes
and tiny treats.

It kind of makes me smile.

First, though, they need
to ascertain the angle.

But working out how
to make wooden wings

is just the latest problem
that Dick's had to solve

since arriving at the chateau.

Because back in January 2015,
there was no electricity,

no heating
and very limited water.

200 plus pages of reasons not
to buy a house.

So, before his family could
move in...

Right, lift this front edge.

...and with the help of plumbers
Lee and Kyle,

Dick came up with
an elaborate plan to bring

the 19th-century chateau
into the modern world.

Working day and night
to make their new home habitable.

Are you happy?
Yeah, go for it.

By the time the removal men arrived
with their belongings,

Dick had ensured the chateau had,
even if still quite limited,

heating and hot water.

Hurray!
Ancl it's warm water. Hurray!

Thank you very much.

It was an enormous achievement.

But it was also only the beginning.

Over the next eight years,

Dick's engineering skills
would be needed

in every quarter of the chateau.

Oh, the sewage pipe!

With the multi-talented builder mate
Steve often by his side...

...Dick was just as happy turning
an oil drum into a hog roast...

Spending hour upon hour
rewiring, plumbing,

sawing, grinding,

welding and generally,
problem solving.

That is free light in here.

And in doing so,

making the chateau
the family home

that he and Angel
have always dreamt of.

In the workshop,

after a bit of jigsaw
jiggery-pokery,

Dick and Johnny's first wing
is almost ready to fly.

You know, I'm a little young
to be fitted for wings but, yeah.

So, s0me0ne's got to ring a bell.

And it's not long before Angel
and Hazel can start

turning them into a divine display,
with foliage from the garden.

So I've just stuck some in

to check if it definitely works.
And it does.

The actual shoving it in

the bamboo leaves in place,

the wings' sensational shape.

Dick and Angel's party is both
a celebration of Christmas,

as well as a massive reunion
for all their friends and family.

There is, though, one person
who can't make it -

Dick's mum.

And as she'll be sorely missed,

Dick is after one of her favourite
Christmas recipes.

You've had Granny's white sauce,
haven't you? No.

What do you mean, no?
Granny's what sauce?

White sauce.

Granny is that one.

A wonderful picture

he's never had your white sauce

to have with Christmas pudding.

not too sweet, or it takes away
from your Christmas pudding.

It's so incredibly important
to bring it back to life.

preserve the chateau's history,

but also allow it
to fire her imagination.

As Dick and Angel's chateau helpers
are now guests,

each table will serve themselves.

So, while crackers are opened,

jokes read and napkins laid
on laps...

...baked cheese topped with
cranberries and port is taken out to

the tables...

...where hungry guests
and fresh baguettes await.

Soon followed by
a vintage cup course.

This is a starter and because we're
having a traditional lunch,

it's a prawn cocktail. ALL: Ooh!

Try to get them on that.
It'll never happen.

And then, it's time for the main
event.

Here we go, we're up.

Traditional French capons and beef,

slow-cooked in Dick's home-made
hog roast.

Hold it, hold it. Don't let
the juice drip all over the floor.

Yep, good. Let's go.

Beep! Beep! Beep!

Here we go.

In the marquee,

Angel takes her chance to finally
get her wings.

But it's not long before plates
piled high with meat,

veg and roast potatoes are brought
in,

and Christmas dinner is served.

Everyone may be happy
to help out where needed...

...but the final course is even more
of a team effort.

So, it's equal parts margarine
and flour. OK.

Granny's famous white sauce.

This would have been a month's
supply of butter and things.

Rations. Rations, because they
wouldn't have had this.

Give me 500g of this, mate.
OK. We grew up with this,

and I didn't even think it had its
roots in the Second World War.

Yeah. Didn't even think about it.
I just thought it's what you had.

Yeah. Well, you keep stirring
Arthur, I'll just put it in.

Just basically mix it into
a nice paste. Yeah.

The thing that's really interesting
is the fact that it's not butter.

Yeah. Now, that's the key thing
about this for Mummy.

THEY EXCLAIM

slowly incorporate it.

The two of you made the same squeal.
