- I am Mama Duce,
El Duce's Mother.

My husband, Walter, had played

the violin when he was younger,

and then my older boy
took up the guitar,

and had his own band, then
Eldon was interested in drums.

[drum beat thuds]

We played a lot
of music at home.

We had Kristofferson
and country music.

He had a lot of friends in
school, always through school,

but he was anxious
to get out of school.

He did not care about
going to school very much.

[drums thud]

- I remember the first
time they got together.

It was called The
Eldon Hoke Band.

Dr. Heathen Scum, Sickie
Wifebeater, and Eldon.

I was 13 and so
Eldon would have been

about approximately 16,
I was totally like Eldon,

into trouble and over
the next maybe two years,

it morphed into the
full on Mentors.

Eldon became El Duce.

[drums thud]

- [Man] Yeah!

[group whistles and cheers]

- Fueled by the booze, his
alcoholism started like 13, 14.

He'd have a bottle
of cough syrup

and he'd chug the whole
bottle of cough syrup.

Relationship with
his dad was awful.

But that was because
I think there

was maybe a learning disability.

They sent him to
this special school.

He had dyslexia or
something like that.

But believe me, the
intellect was there.

I think it was
advanced for his age.

His dad had a room, I think
it was a model train room.

Because I'd go
over to their house

and we'd go down
in their basement.

♪ Well I been drinking

♪ Since I was 15

♪ And I drink it hard

♪ And I'll drink it clean

- And it was just like
stacks and stacks of porno,

a huge collection of porno.

Which was something I'd never
really seen at the time.

- I'm the grumpy,
old man of the band.

I wanted to play guitar
when I heard Jimi Hendrix

and my Mom wanted me to
learn how to play piano

and hoped that the
guitar thing was a phase.

John Marshall Junior
High, when he was walking

down the hallway, he
looked weird [laughs].

He had drumsticks so, that
was a clue, something was up.

[rock music]

- We had been playing together

for a few years in high school

in a band called
The Eldon Hoke Band.

Just playing cover
songs and things.

When we all got
out of high school,

we were all kind of, didn't
know what to do with our lives

and wanted to become musicians.

And at that time, the
punk thing had started

with the Sex Pistols and
all that kind of deal.

And so we kind of hit
that ball and ran with it.

Figured, hey let's do
this dirty lyric thing.

[rock music]

- El Duce growing up was
just like the rest of us,

just full of piss and
vinegar as they say.

- I was a vandal in school, I
used to trash the bathrooms,

blow up the toilets with M80s
and stuff in high school.

All of a sudden I
was in class one day,

drunk, as usual, and
the teacher calls me

and she goes, they
want you down at the

Dean of Students Office,
and I knew somethin' was up.

So I go down there, and
the Dean of Students

tells me, you're
the one who's behind

all the toilets gettin' blown up

and the graffiti and the
trash and the garbage cans

and everything else, and I
go, what do you mean by that?

And he goes, your
buddies finked on you!

You are the mentor
behind it all!

And then when I got
kicked out of high school,

I decided it's time
to form The Mentors.

We formed in I'd say 1976.

[rock music]

- One of the first shows we did

when we first started
was in Tacoma.

We grew up in Seattle
and we somehow

heard that there was
this really cool club,

so we called up the
owner, talked to the guy

on the phone, me and El Duce

and said, well, you need to send

us a demo tape and
a publicity pack.

We actually made a copy of
Deep Purple, Live in Japan

and put it on a cassette

and sent a promo picture
of it and said it was us.

And so he goes, "Okay,
you guys are booked."

At that time, we actually,

our act was pretty
shocking for the time.

We had this girl that would
dress all in sexy clothes

and lingerie and
come out with a whip.

- We had a dancer called
The Whipping Woman

get up there with a whip
and do her little shtick.

- Now the club turned out to be

not exactly as we
thought it would be.

It was more like a pizza
joint rather than a rock club

and they were actually
having a birthday party

for a five year old kid
at the time, so [laughs].

We got out there and
started playing our stuff,

five year old kids
that are coming up

with the little
hats on and stuff.

This was like a Chuck E. Cheese
kind of scenario going on.

We got about 30 seconds, maybe
two or three minutes tops,

and he's back at the soundboard,
"Hey, you guys stop."

So we were gonna play dumb,
well, what's the problem?

Why do we have to, well you
know, you should figure out why.

- They give us our 50 bucks
and told us to hit the highway.

- They paid us to stop, that
happened more than once.

We were booked in
Vancouver, Canada.

- We're banned in Canada
because we went up

there to play two shows,
there was actually

people protesting out
front of the club.

- [Narrator] The band
is playing tonight

downstairs at Wellington's
on Albert Street.

The band members called
Duce, Dr. Heathen Scum,

and Sickie Wifebeater, it's
all part of a publicity stunt.

Outside the bar, protestors find

the concept of rape
rock appalling.

- They told us once we got out

of the country, never come back.

- I think our fans
call it rape rock,

because it totally blows
away all the other music

that's on the market, and
flooding the marketplace today.

- [Narrator] If tonight
is any indication,

heavy metal rockers
will probably

pack up Wellington's
tomorrow night as well.

[somber piano music]

- Pretty soon they were banned
from just about every club.

They were actually,
you can't play

here anymore [chuckles],
you're too hardcore.

- Back when we started,
it wasn't unusual,

actually, for people
to get arrested

for saying dirty
lyrics in public.

You were kind of skating
on thin ice to do it

because there was the
threat of getting arrested.

We played a role, I think,
in corrupting society.

pioneers for

the genre that we

- The Mentors were
like Mad Magazine,

and Cracked,

kind of on acid and
steroids and pumped up to 10

with good music behind it, and
that's what the appeal was.

You get a bite on your
hook, you keep putting

the same bait on there, right?

It looked like cartoons,
executioner hoods,

Steve with the big glasses,
because he used to wear

those big Ernie from
My Three Sons glasses.

[rock music]

And Sickie was the other rock
and roll star with the hair.

[hard rock music]

- The Mentors kind of made an
art out of objectifying women,

that was sort of the humor of
where they were coming from.

I think shock rock had
two different avenues.

There was the shock with
the production value,

that was everything
from the Plasmatics,

Gwar, with all their effects,

that was one side of shock,

and then other side of shock
was just using profanity

and saying unpopular
things, so that was more

like GG Allin, Mentors,
Dwarves kind of thing.

I think it came about
for the same reason

punk came about in
the 70s which was that

people just got bored
with the status quo.

Anything that was
too predictable

breeds this kind of, well let's
do something even nastier.

Let's go out on a
limb even more here.

Let's really plum the dark side.

- For about three years,
it was a wide open thing.

So there wasn't categories,
there wasn't even really metal.

Like even Black Sabbath was
a hard rock band back then.

Judas Priest was hard
rock, GG Allin, though,

he was on the East
Coast doing other stuff.

Doing legitimate
punk type stuff.

GG Allin's is definitely
more shock rock

where El Duce had a real great
mind, genius mind for lyrics

that were self-effacing
and making fun of himself.

Rather than just trying
to piss people off,

he would offend people,
but in a way that you kind

of loved the guy because
it's like, that's funny.

Where GG Allin wasn't
all that funny.

GG Allin was a perpetrator,
which is a whole

different thing, this
was a rock and roll band

with kind of funny lyrics,
I think they're going

for more comedy than
shock rock, actually.

I Wanna Build a Shit

How many people here have
wanted to build a shit tower?

[people laugh]

- They brought it back
to that stage in life

when you still were
playing with your own shit.

[mud splats]

- He knew what he
was doing in the fact

that he knew if he
did what he did,

people were gonna get pissed.

In music nowadays,
the risk isn't there

because things are
so diversified.

The shock value had died down

and that's one thing that
The Mentors brought back.

- Early on, they played
punk rock shows probably

because they couldn't
play anywhere else.

It was the punk
rockers that liked 'em.

That was their following.

- They definitely had a
big punk rock following,

but only half of the punk
rockers could take 'em.

They were too hardcore
for a lot of 'em.

- And at that time,
there was the beginning

of the punk/metal
crossover scene,

so it was a lot less defined.

- I think there was social
hatred between the two of them.

The metal people thought
punk was all for people

that couldn't play music,
who didn't give a fuck.

I think the punk guys
thought of the metal guys

as they were commercial,
pretentious bullshit.

The good stuff rises to the top,

and the bullshit falls away.

- One thing about
The Mentors, too,

was they don't get
a lot of credit,

I think that you
play shock rock,

people are gonna
focus on one thing.

But they all can play,
they're great musicians.

Because of the subject
matter, that gets overlooked.

- It was hard for big
labels to pick 'em up,

because they were so hardcore.

- A couple of our bands on
the label had seen them play.

I think they opened for
somebody like Bitch or...

And they said, you
have to see this band,

they're hysterical,
saw them live

and it was just
incredibly crazy.

They put some stuff out before,

and it kind of was
in the underground,

a lot of tape traders and stuff
were happening at the time.

They became this little
underground sensation

because they were really funny,

and the music was
really good, as well.

Once I got into and
started listening to it and

seen what they were doing live,

I'm like, oh man,
these guys are amazing.

Somebody's gotta do
something with them,

so we ended up doing a
couple records with them.

[rock music]

El was an interesting
guy, when he was sober,

he was unbelievably smart
and an incredible drummer.

Unfortunately, he wasn't
sober a whole lot of the time.

So trying to make
a record in the

studio was a little difficult.

He'd come in and we'd maybe
an hours worth of work done

and then he would get so drunk
it would just fall apart.

We figured out a way
that we would reward him

with giving him
free beers, like,

hey if you get these takes
down then we'll give you

some beer because half the time

we were making these
records, Bill Metoyer,

the engineer and I were just
laughing, dying laughing.

Their shows were a riot, too,

because you never knew
what was gonna happen.

It's interesting with them
because there was the danger

aspect of just what
they were doing on stage

and the lyrical stuff,
but also the danger

of you don't know what
shape they're gonna

be in when they show up, they
could be completely sober

and have an amazing show,
or they could be completely

wasted and play two songs
and completely fall apart

and then get in
fights on stage and

it was definitely, that was
a dangerous band at the time.

- Much as those guys were
great and El was amazing,

they were not the best
business people to deal with

because they liked to
drink a little too much.

- What happened with
Duce was he got,

because of the way
he lived his life

and his alcohol
problem, he would be

constantly surrounded
with low life's.

Just really the worst
possible [laughs].

So there was this one guy,
I won't mention his name,

he's probably still
alive, all of a sudden

proclaimed himself
as El Duce's manager.

Now anybody that's
hanging out with them,

giving them a beer,
anything, that's all it took.

His main goal was to
try to get more money

so they can buy beer
and get fucked up.

- The first time we
actually had a real office,

we had a meeting with the band

and their, I'm going
to put in quotes,

manager, would float
in, so he was wasted.

And then, of course,
El was always wasted.

- This manager guy
and Duce both went in,

completely shit-faced, unbathed,

and demanding money,
tried to get an advance.

I think that Brian was probably

fairly generous with El Duce.

- We didn't really
get a lot of work

done in that meeting, they
were a little out of control.

- He said, no and they
asked him to leave

and so Duce took out his dick

and started drunkenly peeing
all over the guys desk.

That put the icing on the cake

and the guy was no
longer interested.

- We were a little
scared at the time

[laughs] when that happened.

- We started going in a down
slide as a result of that.

- But it was a lot of fun
working with those guys.

I mean, legendary band
they've become now.

It's really amazing that we
had our little part in it.

- El Duce was a
little bit more daring

and didn't really give a shit.

Yeah, I mean, he didn't
really stop at dirty lyrics.

I mean, he would expose
himself and play with himself.

- I first saw The
Mentors, I was doing

sound at the Cathay De Grande.

These guys got up there
and the lead singer,

who was the drummer, he
had really good diction

so you could understand, he'd
annunciate every dirty word,

and then this guitar
player, Sickie,

he did a lot of over hand stuff.

Sickie was a big
influence on a lot

of people with the
over hand stuff.

Of course, I know they
were a big influence

on Metallica, met
the lead singer

of Metallica backstage
at one of their shows.

- They're basically just
obnoxious heavy metal,

really obnoxious.

Yeah, they were the poster boys

of the shock rock,
the dirty lyrics,

oh my god, the world's going
to hell in a hand basket.

It was a joke, he
had the greatest raps

between songs that
you've ever heard.

Like the album Live at
the Cathay De Grande.

- [Man] All these girls
with their noses in the air.

- It's a hybrid with
really hardcore punk

meets classic heavy metal,
with insanely sexist

yet hilarious lyrics, like
Don Rickles made it up.

- They really believe that our
people crossed the red sea.

Two Jews went [imitates
gulping water].

- And we loved shock rock,
everyone loves Alice Cooper

and KISS, they had
great songs, regardless

of the lyrical content,
that's all for your taste,

but the music is slamming good.

Because it's just awesome
riffing, it's awesome.

someone would beat

When he would sing
these offensive things

about women and how
they're, you know,

what The Mentors sing
about, the reactions

of many women, back then,
they would freak out.

Since he was my brother, I
knew he was all about shock.

He would say anything that
would ruffle your feathers.

A lot of women were not pleased.

Most men rooted him on, though.

And they used terms
like, rape rock.

Well, Alice Cooper did a
lot of crazy things too,

like biting off heads
of pigeons and stuff.

I think he was the
one that did that.

[record screeches]

Because I knew my brother,
I knew he was no rapist

and he was no wife beater and
he was none of these things.

Now I can't say the same
for Sickie Wifebeater.

- Uh-oh.

I was fuckin' my
wife for awhile,

and then one day I noticed
that she smelled kind of funny

'cause I would doin'
the Sickie sniffer test.

- [Interviewer] What's
the Sickie sniffer test?

- You know how you
always gotta lick 'em

before you dick 'em, this time

I like to sniff 'em
before I smack 'em.

We have a song called,
The Sickie Sniffer Test,

also based on a true [laughs].

Like I said, everything is true

or has a kernel of truth to it.

And in this particular
case, I sniffed

and I didn't like what I smelt.

I smelled another man, at least

it didn't smell
like another woman.

We would have a cross section

of metal-ers and punkers
and then straight edge

skinheads that wanted
to beat up people.

I remember one time

when we were in LA, we got
invited to some house party,

but skinheads were
running the joint

and they didn't like the
fact that I had long hair.

They said, "Well you can come,

"but you gotta wear your hood."

I go, I wouldn't be caught in
a skinhead place without one.

- El Duce came out with the idea

of wearing executioner
hoods because he was big fan

of this movie,
Mark of the Devil,

which was a cult, horror movie.

- I collect a lot
of horror films

and this guy was chopping
off all these people's heads.

- One of these guys with hoods

would torture all these
people for alleged crimes

against the church
and things like that.

- And I go, man, that guys
got the coolest outfit,

I gotta get one just
like it, and I go,

that's what we'll do, we'll
all wear execution hoods!

- So he had the idea to
do that and make it sort

of like KISS, where it was
a secret identity thing.

- Well I figured,
KISS have their look,

and The Beatles have their
look, we gotta have our look.

- Yeah, we did get
mistaken, lumped in

with the Ku Klux Klan,
occasionally, that would happen.

But we just have to
explain to people,

no these aren't white
hoods, they're black hoods

but it is a little complicated

because the Ku Klux Klan,
they actually have some

of the higher ranking guys
in the clan are allowed

to wear black
hoods, so [laughs],

that created also some problems.

We were an integrated band,
that would cause problems, also.

- I guess I'm the Sammy
Davis Junior of the group.

Erase it.

Steve always tell me to
leave his white women alone

and I'm always telling him,
leave my black women alone.

- [Steve] Hands off

[Loma laughs]

so it wasn't just
simply shocking

for the sake of being shocking.

and violence in rock

and roll lyrics and whether
the records should be rated X.

- [Narrator] Tipper Gore, wife
of US Senator Albert Gore,

heads the campaign
to label all records

that deal with drugs,
sex or violence.

- As parents, we
believe we have a right

to some consumer
guidance in our effort

to protect our own
children from material

that we believe may be
inappropriate for them.

- The PMRC I thought was
just a way for Al Gore's wife

and Al Gore to get
more notoriety,

kind of like that movie he
made about the global warming.

I'll make a movie
about something

that nobody can
really do anything

about and everybody
will freak out

and I'll win the
Nobel Peace Prize

and up my speaking price,
and that'll show 'em

for not letting me be president.

Did he say the F word on that?

Oh my goodness,
he said that word

that you can't say on
TV like George Carlin

used to talk about, the seven
words you can't say on TV.

- The Mentors were
known to be one

of the most offensive
at that time.

They cited him in the congress
as one of the most offensive

and that's when they started
labeling albums with a warning.

Well, really all that did
was, you know how kids are,

it made 'em wanna buy it worse.

And so Eldon's sales
actually increased.

- [Narrator] The notion
of a label recommending

parental guidance to be
applied by individual

record companies on
albums containing

explicit lyrics is gaining
industry acceptance.

- We have asked them to
please go one step further

and make it a really
adequate solution

by creating an industry
wide set of criteria

that all the companies
would subscribe to

and then could
individually apply.

- They went through
a whole bunch

of bands that they wanted to
have labeling on their records.

So they would recite the lyrics,

okay this band said this,
this band said that,

isn't that bad, isn't that bad?

And then at the very end
of this presentation,

they said, and the worst
one was The Mentors.

And they read some of
the Mentors lyrics.

- Let's move on to sexuality,
a theme which has been

part of rock music
since the beginning.

Today's rock artists are
describing sexual activity

and practice in terms more
graphic than ever before.

- Here's the best part of
the reverends testimony,

this was the most
sensational part

of the hearing, as far
as I was concerned.

This is the part
where the reverend

recites the lyrics to,
"Golden Shower" by Mentor.

We were all there
and we heard him

knocking on the door,
we heard the guy like,

the boys El Duce's here."

And we're like, oh yeah,
we gotta let him in.

We welcomed him with open arms.

- One of our early
shows in LA area,

El Duce showed up to say, hello,

because he's buddies with us,

the bouncers were being
real dicks that night,

not letting anybody backstage,

even our own guys,
all night long.

Somehow, in the
confusion, El Duce,

while they were kicking him out,

makes it to the stage instead.

And next thing
you know, El Duce,

we're getting ready to go on,
El Duce somehow is onstage,

and this street
urchin girl is sucking

him off in front
of the whole crowd.

This could have very easily been

an all ages show or something.

He also used to walk around
with this 12 inch double

dildo hanging out of
his belt all the time.

One time, he left it on our
Gwar bus so I sort of saved

it for him and gave it back
to him next time I saw him.

I definitely never touched it

with more than two fingers,
I'll tell you that.

gentlemen, The Mentors movie,

starring ladies man,
El Duce on drums.

- In 1987, the band
was offered a three

month US tour with Saint
Vitus, so I couldn't do that,

couldn't get that
much time off work,

and finally said,
no, you guys go ahead

and do that without me,
so they got this guy

Ed Danky, who was some friend

of Duce's somehow or the other

who went by the name of
Papa Sneaky Sperm Shooter.

- Ed was a big drinker,
big druggie, heroin addict.

El Duce is a major
league alcoholic.

In this mix, Sickie,
who certainly would

like to drink and

straightest of the bunch.

- In '87, when we went
on the big long ass,

motherfuckin', grueling
tour with them,

Ed was playing bass, yeah.

- What happened was that Sickie

had ventured off
with some strippers

and some cocaine.

- So Danky moves up to
guitar and they asked me

if I would play bass.

Man, I concealed my
identity really good.

Wore gloves, long sleeves,
hood, changed my shoes.

I didn't really want anyone
to know who I was that night.

The first time The Mentors
had ever toured the US

and they were getting
a pretty big guarantee,

I think they were making a
thousand dollars a night.

- Yeah, they were doing
really good, yeah.

- They were like, a
complete mess, as soon as

they'd get the money, they'd
immediately fight over it

between band members and
pay their road crew nothin'

and they had no concept
of budgeting money

for the next show,
every night it was

a free for all, it
was pretty nutty, man.

They had the Circle
Jerk's old van

completely covered
with graffiti.

I played bass two shows,
and after those two shows,

they paid me, I made more money

than I did the whole Vitus tour.

- Yeah, exactly [laughs].

- Somewhere along the
line, Ed met this chick

who apparently
was a bass player.

[audience shouts]

- This guy, you're gonna
get your fuckin' ass kicked,

because this is the
fucking Mentors!

- '88, '89, it was such a
spur of the moment thing.

We're going on tour,
and you're our manager,

Here we go, Eric
didn't want to go,

he probably thought, this
is gonna be a giant mess

and it was.

Ed took over on guitar and
then they put me on bass.

space at Lennon Studios,

he would try to teach me some

I never had heard
them before that,

at all, I knew
nothing about them.

And then when I found out that

this is a rape
rock band [laughs],

and I'm like, oh, holy
crap, I was kind of shocked

but I was shocked in a good way.

I felt safe because Horndogger
was there, Ed was there.

Horndogger was our roadie.

- Duce named me Horndogger,
because I'm a horny dog.

[Lucinda] Horndogger's
playing bass,

Eldon kicks him off the
stage, and then I come out.

- Well I didn't really
go tour that much

and they needed a bassist
and so stood in for him.

- It's all part of the shtick.

- [El Duce] You're too
drunk, get out of here.

You can't play the songs
right, get out of here!

- We're like, oh God,
you don't have a hood,

what are we gonna do?

- T-shirts and safety pins.

- Grabbed a black t-shirt

and tucked the safety
pins in the back.

blew up, we met Zippy.

Sickie just didn't

go on that tour 'cause
it was such a mess.

- It was just a mess
as we got further out,

it got worse and
worse, he was pullin'

the gettin' so wasted that
he just wouldn't be there

and we'd have to go find
him, the show'd be, okay,

we were supposed to
start an hour ago

and he's not here, we just
all were done at that point.

Me and Ed were like,
we're out of here, see ya,

we got on a bus and
came back to Portland.

Ed, he had a bad drug problem
and he died of an overdose.

Eldon was a real sweetheart
and also a real nightmare.

I really don't know
if a lot people

think he is really what he
would portray himself to be.

To me he was like
a grandpa [laughs].

He was always really protective

of me on the road,
which was cool,

then vise versa, too,
he'd get real drunk

and not be able to
take care of himself,

which was kind of sad and I
would make sure that he was okay

and drag him on back,
we all did that.

- I really liked
him, I really did.

For all the bullshit and
the fun and the drinkin',

and how sad it was
that he was such

a fuckin' horrible alcoholic
at such a young age.

[somber music]

- He's El Duce, a
very heavy alcoholic.

- He's already had
about 10 40 O's.

- No, I need some more
saucy, I got some stashed.

- [Sickie] He's got a
secret liquor stash.

- When El went to rehab
and I picked him up,

and on the way back, we
went right to a 7-Eleven

and got a case of
beer and drank it.

And the last couple of
times I had seen him,

he was pretty fucked up, he
was just, every time I saw him,

he was so drunk that he
couldn't play the drums.

- The last tour they
did with the Duce,

apparently Duce was
really fucked up.

He was falling off the throne
a little bit too many times.

Plus somebody scored
him a half pound

of some really good killer,
fuckin' thunder fuck bud,

that he wasn't gonna let go of.

Broy says, you gotta take
that fuckin' shit out of here.

He runs the ship pretty tight.

He's the one that
tells you what to do.

- What the fuck is your, dammit!

I've had it with your bullshit!

[El Duce groans]

- Don't fuck with me!

- You fuckin' asshole [laughs].

- You fuck with my program.

I've had it with you
and your 40 o' bullshit.

- Broy called me up and he said,

"Hey, Duce, he's is
getting too Duce'd."

[laughs] I knew what that meant.

"We'll give you a
quarter of everything,

"just you be the
drummer." I said, yesh,

and I was with 'em for 18
years, somethin' like that.

I was already Moose
before I joined the band,

but not Moosedick
and they all said,

well, since you're
one the of the guys,

you're gonna have to
come up with a name.

I don't know if it's
bigger than whatever

I do have to feed it breakfast

in the morning though [laughs].

I didn't know how the
fans were gonna take it.

Oh, Duce not on drum,
I mean, come on?

You always have some
group of haters out there,

and he loved it, Duce had no
problem getting off the drums.

He was just like,
oh, hallelujah.

He had a problem falling into
my drums, which I didn't like.

It happened every other night.

I knew he was touching my drums,

you could feel the
cymbals on his back,

so he knows where he's at.

It's like, hey, don't go
running into my drums.

It's all part of the
show, bullshit it is.

And I'd get him in that kidney
jab with the sticks [grunt],

he'd knock that
shit off right away.

[El Duce growls]

When he went out front and he
didn't have to play the drums,

he thought, oh this
is gonna be great,

I'm not gonna have to
have any responsibilities,

like I can just drink and
drug and do whatever I want

and it's just gonna
be hunky dory.

It did push his alcoholism to a

higher degree, that's for sure.

- [Crowd] El Duce,
El Duce, El Duce!

- If it wasn't for
the alcoholism,

I don't think I would have
been in the band today.

During that time,
it was so extreme.

It was just like everything
and anything goes.

There's no rules on
anything, that was the

whole Hollywood thing, at
least in the music business.

There was definitely a lot
of drugs involved with it.

I'm glad I survived
it, you know [laughs]?

A lot of people I know are dead.

A lot of people,
it took their life.

- I got introduced to
Nick and he asked me

to show where I could
find El, and I said,

well I can take you where El is.

There he is, El Duce.

- Argh!

Where's the booze?

- [Interviewer] You did some
deal with Courtney, right?

- Yeah, she offered me 50
grand to whack Kurt Cobain.

- Yeah, I was tellin' you this--

- And I heard everything,
she pulled up in a limo

and offered El the money,
so 50 G's is 50 G's.

- Hey, $50 grand does
a lot of talkin'.

- Some people say
that El Duce was

asked by Courtney Love
to murder Kurt Cobain.

He did take a lie
detector test and passed.

- It's Courtney Love's
dad on the phone.

Kurt's brother used to be our
guitar player's girlfriend.

That's how I met Courtney
in the first place.

getting hit by a train.

His death happened
on April 19th.

Some people said he was
killed, along with Kurt Cobain.

I was the one that dropped
him off when he got killed.

- He had gone off the day before

with a friend of ours,
who lived in California,

the legendary Allen Wrench.

There are a few
things that were kind

of a problem that happened a
week or so before Duce died,

and then I got a call from, I
don't want to name their name,

but I get a call, Duce had just

done this documentary, this
Kurt Cobain documentary,

He's specifically naming
you in this documentary.

I'm like, oh, cool,
well you must be talking

about music or
something like that.

Like no, no, he's naming
you for some other things.

- But I know who whacked
him, I told Allen,

I mean, my friend [laughs],
I'll let the FBI catch him.

But [laughs], that's just the
way it's done, end of story.

- I'm like, that's
not gonna fly.

That's not gonna fuckin' fly.

And it's just me
and him in there,

I'm like, dude, what
the fuck are you doing?

Why are you naming me, why
would you name me in this shit?

And he's like, oh you
know, tries to be funny

and play it off and doesn't
want to give an answer.

It's like we're both
drinking and all that shit.

- Buy me a beer, I might do
some more talkin' [laughs].

- It came time for me to leave,

and he needed something
from the store.

I'm like, well, I'm in a
hurry, I'm gonna drop you off,

I don't really have
time to wait for you,

so I'm gonna drop you off and
I'm gonna take off [sigh].

And that was the
last I saw of him.

Okay, here's what's up,
we agreed there's not

gonna be any fuckin'
Cobain shit in this.

- We had played a
gig at Al's Bar.

El was totally straight
when he arrived

and then by the time,
an hour or so later,

we were supposed to go on,
he was totally shitfaced

and fell, it morphed
into him making fun

of my ex-girlfriend, so then
I was telling him to shut up

and it just kind of
ended on a sour note.

So it's been a
major weird feeling

for me just to have
everything end like that.

- When I woke up Sunday morning,

and was just fiddling
around out in the studio,

and some of the Karaoke
King tapes that we recorded,

and I see this car
pull up on the outside

of my property, a kind
of official looking car,

and this lady comes out
and starts walking up.

And I say, hey can I help you?

And then she shows
me this badge.

She says, "Do you
know Eldon Hoke?"

"Yeah, I know him,"

and she goes, "Does
he live here?"

I presumed it was a
cop looking for him,

I thought they
were gonna come in

and search the house
looking for him,

which I didn't want
at all, and so I said,

well no, he doesn't
really live here.

She goes, "Do you
know how to get

"in touch with his family?"

So I started, oh
something's going on here.

And then she tells me he's
just been hit by a train.

[somber music]

And that kind of really, I
wasn't expecting to hear that,

especially on Sunday morning,
and it kind of flipped me out.

So she goes, "Well, how do we
get in touch with his family?"

And I had all their
numbers, so I went

in the house to get
it but I was just

so flipped out by it, I
couldn't even really think.

So I went out and
told them, listen,

I have to get myself
together here, I can't,

I'm gonna have to call
you back with a number,

which I did, but then
I called his sister

and about an hour later after
I got my composure together,

I called his sister
and let her know.

- I didn't want to know
any of the details.

It was very difficult,
as you can imagine.

- Broy call me up, I
think it was the next day

or the day after, said
he had some bad news,

that El got hit by a
train, it was just, yeah,

I was totally in shock,
still haven't processed it.

- He enjoyed life so
much, he was able to do

what he wanted to do,
that's most important,

that people can do
what they want to do

and they're more successful
if they can live their dreams

and he was able
to live his dream.

I asked him, aren't you
afraid up there on the stage?

and he says, "Oh no, it
was fun, nothin' to it."

He just made up
stories and entertained

the audience, ab-lib like that.

I miss all that entertainment.

- Well, as far as the
Courtney Love thing,

you can never trust a woman
so anything's possible

as far as that goes, who knows?

or was fuckin' the
person that did.

- I think Courtney's
gotten a bad rap,

I think the reality

is even scarier

I'd ever made in The Mentors,

is playing the
week after he died

because nobody knew it yet,
and so we're at this club,

and people are going,
where's the Duce,

'cause it was often
that he'd come late,

we'd do two songs and he comes
pouring himself on stage.

But two or three
times, you get people,

where's the Duce And
Sickie would just,

he's fuckin', he
got hit by a train,

he ain't comin' down tonight.

And I could see what was
happening, I was going, uh-oh.

Oh man, all of a sudden
you start hearin' people

start crying in the crowd,
then you get the opportunist,

the guys that are
right on the money.

They come up already
up on stage going,

hey man, do you need a
lead singer [laughs]?

Yeah, right off
the bat, just like,

fuck off, get out of here.

- I kind of wanted
to keep going,

but the other two guys
in the band at the time,

the other drummer we had,
we called him Moosedick,

and Sickie, they both, it took
the wind out of their sails

and they weren't
really so interested.

There was still a big
fan demand for it,

but we just, we didn't really
have anything better to do.

- Dr. Heathen Scum, he's
the brains of the outfit.

Suit and tie guy by day
and a rape rocker by night.

He says what goes and what
does not go in the band.

You don't go against him,
Sickie would torture chicks

and Sickie J would fuck
chicks and [laughs].

- My buddy handed me
this CD, never heard

of The Mentors before,
and I remember hearing

"Sleep Bandits", and
"Sandwich of Love",

and I'm like, man, these
songs are really fucked up

[laughs], I couldn't
wait to play it.

I naturally just went home
and learned all those songs

and a week later, we
were playing a gig

as the Northwest Breeders,
and we get this call

from this guy named
Gumby, he says,

"I know Sickie
Wifebeater, Sickie is
here with me right now.

"We see you have a Northwest
Breeders show coming up.

"We want to know what
this is all about."

They come to the gig and
Sickie had just gotten a DUI,

and I had just gotten a DUI,
we hit it off instantly.

We were talking about our bust,
it just morphed from there.

We had a lot of good
times partying--

- Oh, yeah.

- And then sometimes
the party kept going

and going and going
and going and going.

Every night we hung
out we partied.

- How many ladies can agree

- There was no off limits.

and so the revolving door kind

on the way out, but--

but the classic Mentors
is drummer singing,

two guys rockin' up
front, and I started

a Mentors knock off band
called, The Mantors.

I go, I'm gonna start
my own Mentors band

called the Mantors,
just so the fact

that I can make
a big enough bang

so I can be the
singer/drummer for The Mentors

and that's the sole
reason I did it.

- Mark had the
pleasure of driving

my old lady to the
methadone clinic,

I think old Mad Dog was trying

to slip her a
roofie or something

and she caught wind of that
and jumped out of the car,

with the car running and
going 40 miles an hour,

she hit the concrete
rolling, that was the first

sign that Mark Duce was turning
into a scandalous scumbag.
