if something were to happen

A lot of activity
seems to happen later

at night
or early in the morning.

Stuff happens.

But I do honestly hope
something does happen

so I know
I'm still not crazy.

When I was younger,
I grew up mostly in the same city.

Everybody knows everybody.

You go to school
with the same people.

You know their parents.
Their parents know each other.

-Big game tonight.

-Coming over to get ready?
-Wanna come to my place?

You never come to my place.
It's been what,

six months
since I moved here?

I thought I saw
someone in the hallway.

But, for real,

about the old lady

who died in this house?

She lived here alone.
No family, nothing.

She fell down
the stairs and broke her neck.

They say they didn't
find her body for weeks.

The house was full of stuff
when we moved in.

And it felt weird.
Like desperate, sad.

One time, I saw
this really dark shadow

-[Mrs. Jackson] Carolyn,

those stupid stories.

she's just superstitious.

Besides, she was probably

who's not worth the thought.

She ended up

I could feel the...

Like a bad energy in the air
just shifting around us.

I knew something was wrong.

As soon as I said,

"You can come
sit down with me,"

the energy just seemed
to have gone a little thicker.

The air, it was
kind of hard to breathe.

[upbeat music playing]

[singer]

-[knocks on door]
-[woman] Shiann?

[Shiann] What?

[woman] Can you please
turn the music down?

[phone vibrates]

-[knocks on door]

[knocks on door]

Mom?

[screams]

[ominous music playing]

It felt like
somebody was just watching me

the whole time
from the hallway or something,

and it was just very uneasy
and unsettling.

The feeling that I got
when I've seen it

was just complete fear.

I was terrified.
I didn't know what to do.

Maybe it's waiting
to do something bad to me.

It felt like something
horrible was gonna happen.

Okay. So I'll text you
later then?

-Okay.
-Okay.

Hey.

How's your mom?

Fine...
things considered.

I saw...

I saw something weird
on Friday.

Shush.

Mom's really hurt.

I don't wanna talk
about it, okay?

I would feel a really bad,
negative energy.

And it didn't feel
like anything

I've ever been used to.

And then Mr. Frog

saw through the clearing
the beautiful pond.

And Frog and Toad
went to the pond

and found a big picnic.

-[Cindy] I loved it.
-[Shiann chuckles]

I knew you would.

Good night, hon.

Tomorrow,
we'll go for ice cream.

[gasps]

[ominous music playing]

[TV chatter]

[woman] Shiann.

It made me want to scream,
cry, run.

You don't know what it wants.

You don't know
if it wants to harm you.

You don't know if it wants to
harm somebody in your family.

I believe the more
that you talk about something,

the more
it allows it to come in,

especially with talking
about things that happened

in the building
that it happened.

So I do believe
that probably after today,

things will probably
get more active.

I've always believed
that there's a possibility

of something
more than just us here,

but didn't know how wide
that spectrum will go.

Has it done anything to you?

What are you talking about?

You know what I mean.

-It's gone.

I would just try
and talk to her,

see if anything had been
happening at her house.

This was because
I invited the ghost

to sit down and be my friend.

You can come sit with me.

So I was a little upset
with myself

on what I had done
and what I had said.

To take power away
from an entity

is as simple
as not giving them power.

So it's attached to me.

I decided
that I had to do something

to fix what was going on.

I didn't know how but I wanted
to figure out something.

It's hard to understand

and wrap your head
around what's happening.

I don't even know how
to talk to anyone about it.

I was very scared
for the future.

Maybe like an unwanted friend,

I just have to stop
paying attention.

All I could think
is that I just...

I wanna get away from this.
I want this energy to stop.

It could be a relief
to be able to be normal.

[ominous music playing]

[Vanian] Shiann and I hit
it off pretty quickly.

We went on a few dates
and it was pretty serious

from the start.

and I've got work tomorrow.

It's very scary realizing that
whatever this is can do more.

[evil laughter]

[Shiann] It was very hard
going through everything that was happening.

When I would try
and tell my family,

they kind of look at me and
I would feel like I was crazy.

Vanian doesn't even
believe me.

[Vanian] At first,
I was very skeptical

and I didn't believe
a lot of the things

that she claimed
were going on.

[ominous music playing]

[chuckles]

Good move.

You gotta get out of here.

Where do you wanna go?

That's not what I meant.

We both graduated.

We're both working.

I think it's time
we make a move.

[dramatic music playing]

We had that kind of
fresh feeling

that maybe
this was our chance.

It's a chance to escape,
and I just wanna leave

this thing behind.

When we got into
our own house,

it felt like a dream.

It was a big step for us.

It was complete bliss.

I wasn't hearing anything,
seeing anything.

It was very relaxing
and peaceful.

It honestly was like heaven.

My niece is my absolutely
favorite person in my family.

She's like my best friend
and I watch her

as much as I possibly can.

Hey, Cindy.

Hmm, what you drawing?

Cookies.

Last treat then bed, okay?

But this time
you have to sit in the kitchen

like a big girl.

[ominous music playing]

But I like it here.

[screams]

[grunts]

She started screaming
bloody murder

like we've never heard her
scream before.

So we both booked in there
to see what was going on

and she's staring
into the closet screaming.

It's here. It's back.

She had a nightmare.

It followed me.

You're talking crazy, Shiann.

She's a kid.

There's nothing here.

[screaming]

Vanian!

[pants]

Oh, you're bleeding.

I saw it.

I'm scared.

-It's real.

I'll go get some bandages.

There's something here.

I've seen it
and it's horrifying.

I didn't understand
or believe in any of this,

and then all of a sudden
it's a big part of my life.

[Shiann]
I know it's still here.

It's using him
and hurting him to get to me.

It's still following me.

It made me question
the safety of the people

who enter our house.

We hear quite a few things
that happen in the attic.

We've actually heard
a table moving around up there

that we have recently found.

We didn't know
it was up there right away.

And you can go up
into the attic but I will...

I'm not willing
to take you up there.

My boyfriend, Vanian,

will have to take you
up there.

It felt like
there was like a hot breath

breathing right
on to the side of my face.

And I came down
and told her that,

and that kind of just
pushed her away

from ever wanting
to come up here ever again.

But I was looking
in that way and it felt like

someone's face
was right here next to me,

just breathing hot air
on to my face.

[ominous music playing]

I think that by putting us
through these experiences,

it's telling us
that we don't have control,

and the more we try
to gain control,

the more
we're gonna lose control.

As things progressed
and got worse, it...

It's very unsettling
to even be alone in the house.

[ominous music playing]

[clatter]

[woman] Shiann...

never leave me.

Let me in.
I'm coming in.

I want in.

[screams] Leave!
Just leave!

You are not welcome here!

Get out!

[pants]

Maybe that's all I need
to do,

just tell it to leave.

And the new energy
in this home

is a recipe for a disaster.

There's nothing beyond
its control.

But I believe
that it's not bigger than the both of us.

[ominous music playing]

Things were fine and quiet
for a while

and I felt normal again...

until I decided
to recolor my hair.

[indistinct chatter on TV]

[gasps] [screaming]

Shiann!

Open the door.

It's okay. It's okay.

You're okay.

Shh.

From now on, I gotta take
care of you, okay?

Nothing can hurt you
when we're together.

[screaming]

[ominous music playing]

It's very stressful
to know that every day

there's a possibility that
something bad could happen,

and it's like
stepping on hot coals

or, you know,
walking on broken glass.

You don't wanna say the wrong
thing or do the wrong thing.

[Shiann] I was posting
about it on social media,

asking for advice
and what to do.

[tense music playing]

[Vanian] "An entity attaches
to a person, not a place,

and doesn't leave until
it gets what it wants.

"Have you tried saging?"

What's saging?

A lot of people
had actually commented,

telling me on stuff
that I could do

that they believe works.

The only thing I was gonna be
comfortable with

would be burning sage.

[ominous music playing]

[lighter flicks]

I'm hoping this might
actually end up

helping whatever's in here
move on.

While I'm doing this,
I'm just gonna say out loud

I'd like any negative energy
in this house to leave

or move on and no longer
bother or harm us...

in the nicest way possible.

[Shiann] I have read that
you can cleanse yourself

with the sage as well

and let the smoke
go around your body.

You want me to sage you?

Stand like this so that you
can get us both in the frame.

This stuff calming down
a little bit

would be ideal for us.

Everything not becoming
so harsh

and dominant in a way,
I would say.

Just finally have a chance
to be on our own.

A huge part of me
just wanted to step back

and wish I never went to
my friend's house that night

and wish that
I never had to deal

with everything happening,

but you can't
live in the past forever.

We're hopeful that
something will finally work,

but there's always
in the back of my head

that I accepted what is...

what is going on and that
it may not ever leave me.
