A single light source is incredibly versatile.

Most of the photos I take in my life

are taken with a single light source.

So really think about moving your subject within it,

going from backlit to frontlit to sidelit,

and just play with it and see what you get.

For example, I'm currently lit by one light,

which is this, right?

For the main camera,

that's a nice sort of 3/4 front light.

There's a polyboard here. (knocking)

That's giving me some fill.

Without it, my shades would be much darker.

But obviously, looking into your camera,

that's now backlight.

So we've got some informal cinematic really,

you've got the light source,

you've got the highlights

that that light source is giving me.

But also, if you look at me,

there's no shadows really within my face here

because everything that's lighting my face

is being reflected by this polyboard,

by that background, by the floor,

and literally by Joe, behind the camera over there,

that all bouncing a bit of light towards me.

But it's a soft light.

And it's a great way of, sort of I suppose,

ironing out imperfections without having to do any retouch.

You stick so many backlight,

everything that's in their face is a soft light.
