After WWII "Pan Tadeusz",
a film by Ryszard Ordynski,

from 1928, survived in extracts
amounting to a total of 1220 m.

The preserved materials were
restored within the project:

Official YIFY movies site:

"Conservation and Digitalisation
of Pre-war Feature Films

at the National Film Archive in Warsaw".

This copy was made of two preserved
coloured copies and dupe negative.

Fragments of the copy on nitrate
film found in 2006 were also used.

They include scenes so far unknown.

Due to much damage to all
preserved materials

the output storage was set
individually to each scene.

The opening intertitles
were reconstructed

based on the original
cinema's programme.

The film went through digital
restoration: image stabilization,

colour grading and management,
removal of distortions.

Some damage could not be removed.

It was also impossible to recreate
the original division into acts.

The film was adapted to
the current standards:

eight frames per second
were doubled

to create the effect of the original
16 frames per second.

The length of the film is 2236 m.
It is incomplete.

The works were carried out in accordance
with the principles of conservation.

The works were implemented within the
project:"Conservation and Digitalisation

of Pre-war Feature Films at the
National Film Archive in Warsaw".

ACT ONE

PROLOGUE BY:

PARIS, 1832.

What does one contemplate
on the French soil?

Oh, Mother of Poland,
so soon did lay to rest,

one cannot speak,
't pains the chest!

Holy Virgin, who...
shinest o'er the Ostra Gate!

Lithuania! My country!

The poet's house in Nowogrodek.

The cemetery "is to my own liking".

Meanwhile, return
my yearning soul,

to those sylvan hills,
those verdant meadows...

...Oft a pauper begging for bread...

When the man yonder,
the god of war!

For general Dabrowski
strives to march to Poland

from the Italian land.

Among these fields by the brook,
long time ago.

A young master rode in
a horse-drawn carriage.

The servants were waiting for
the Seneschal to attire himself.

A girl dressed in whites went along,
around her hams long grass hast swung.

Who lived hither?

His uncle hath not yet found a wife,
aunt in St. Petersburg led her life.

It is good, Thaddeus, that you returned,
so many fair ladies are here.

Your uncle is thinking to
celebrate your marriage soon...

Lord knows for how long we shall work,

when the sun descends
from the celestial shield,

it is time to withdraw from the field.

All the company was returning
from the grove.

The greetings the Judge bestowed
upon his nephew were short.

...The Chamberlain,
surrounded by his family.

In the Seneschal's absence,
bade the Apparitor secretly

to bring tables and supper
to the old castle hastily.

What harm did I make by
bringing them here?

Nothing is lost and
thou might still earn,

for the castle is the matter
of our concern.

...The monk,
seemed not used to his habit,

for he must have grown
old outside of it.

Why art thou here inside these walls?
I despise the castle.

The Chamberlain sat at
the head of the table,

this honour befitted him
from his age and his office.

That empty chair seemed very odd,
soon he filled it with his thought.

A young and beautiful lady appeared.

She hath the same eyes, lips and face.

The only difference was her age.

The Notary was the most rabid...
He was a counsel once,

they called him the preacher,
for he had a zest for gests.

...Tally-ho! shouted
the Assessor and I...

...A hare, a tough mark,
rabbited straight to the field...

The hounds chased the hare,

it charged into the
woods and then my Kusy.

A catch!

A noble with no office,
like a hound without a tail

which is to great avail,

do you, sir,
view the lack of one as good?

Vivat!

The Count marvelled at
new and exquisite views,

romantic, he called them,
and so he called his mind,

in faith, he was of an odd kind.

Is it true, my lord, that thou
won't pay for the trials?

Will thou yield the castle
to the Soplica family?

I will accept the court's conditions
of an agreement.

Agreement with the Soplicas!
My lord, my dear sir,

'tis no place to jest,
for the castle belongs to Horeszko,

is Soplica to have that?

Dismount thy horse, my lord,
thou shall see the castle.

...They came to a halt,
upstairs,

in the great mirror hall.

There is enmity between
Soplica and Horeszko,

thou hast Horeszko's
blood in your veins.

My former lord, the Pantler,
had a child named Ewa,

a daughter like an angel...

Jacek Soplica,
a passionate man among the gentry,

a quarreller, named the Voivod
jokingly...

People say the Pantler's daughter
was fond of him

and to her parents she
would not reveal it.

...The dignitary's doors were closed

for Jacek, the Cupbearer's son...

It was in Kosciuszko's day, my lord
approved the law of the Third of May.

He called for his knights,
when the Moscow army appeared at night.

Seeing his enemies frightened,

The Pantler ventured forth
with his sabre...

I rubbed the blood from
his wounds in my rapier,

and I swore to dull the blade
on Soplicas' necks.

In no other country is there
such coffee as in Poland.

Gentlemen prefer to stay in the room,
I shall head out to gather mushrooms.

People knew the
gentleman's greatest crime,

for he never appeared on time.

Beside the fence narrow, long,
raised hills were stretched,

free from trees, bushes and flowers:
the cucumber patch.

Cucumbers for the Count?
Here they come!

This man came here not to
frighten you or to beg,

he is our guest,
look at his gentle and kind face.

By whatever name I must honour thee,
thou art a goddess, a nymph,

a spirit or a phantom, indeed.

...Can you drive my stray
birds back into the grain?

I shall no longer live in deceit,

my mysterious nymph
simply feeds the geese!

The Judge's company had gone out,
after a noisy breakfast,

for the rite of mushroom-gathering.

The place is so peaceful and divine,
where Telimena often hides,

she called it her Musing Shrine.

Bravo, congratulations on thy talent,
do not neglect it,

thou must search for the
beauty of nature above all!

Oh happy skies of the Italian lands!

That Italian sky, as I have heard,
it is blue and clear,

yet it is like frozen water.

Aren't wind and bad weather
a hundred times better?

Wherever thou shall lay thy eyes,
there are plenty of sights!

What sceneries and pictures
are made of clouds!

An unexpected guest appeared,
and one could deduce,

from his face and posture,
that he brought remarkable news.

A bear, my lord!

Tomorrow, before five,
my brothers huntsmen

shall come to the forest shrine.

...Sir, thou must be awake,
the hunt has begun,

it is late...

An old Jew,
known for his good nature,

had ran a tavern for many years...

Can ye believe that General Dabrowski

took a sniff or four
from this box?

...The war is near!
The war for Poland, my brothers,

we shall be Poles again here!

Dabrowski, the general of ours,
and our white eagles!

They shall come, by Napoleon's order,
cross the river at the border!

Our homeland will be resurrected!

When Napoleon takes snuffs,
one after the other,

before the battle is over,
it is a sign of victory.

Let us join his army!
Upon seeing our lances

Napoleon will ask who we are,
we shall shout:

Insurgents, Your Majesty,
volunteers from Lithuania!

My Reverend Father! When shall it be?

Their arrival is prophesied for
every feast day in the year!

To invite and await a guest
is the least,

the whole household must be gathered
and we must prepare a feast,

but first, cleanse your
houses of filth and dirt.

He saw Thaddeus, through the window,

galloping on the highroad.

Who did explore Lithuanian wilderness,

down to the very heart?

Stupid bear!
If thou had stayed in thy den!

The bear scared by the hounds
and the human horde,

escaped to a place
which was not secured.

And the melody of the horn

was echoed by the
oaks and beeches.

Soon the sound died in the air

and they looked at the fresh
corpse of the bear.

Gentlemen, the bullet comes not
from your rifle but Horeszko's,

yet it was not me who fired...

To fire between two
heads and never miss!

Gentlemen! As long as I live
only one man had such aim:

Jacek was his name,
known as Moustache.

The Count is wealthy!
The moneyed have whimsical tastes!

The Count with his fair hair!
Such art not too passionate!

And Thaddeus?
A boy kind-hearted and innocent,

for the first time smells
love's sweet scent...

I shall consider
the Count's fate,

will he be fond of Zosia or nay...

...It is time to give up
turkeys and hens.

Fie! is such fun worthy
of a dignitary's daughter!

I shall bring thou into the world today!

Since I have lived with
the hens and turkeys

the only guest I saw was a wild clove!

...Curtsy!

Be careful, my Zosia,
the young Count is here,

a kinsman of the Voivod,
he is well-behaved,

remember to be affable to him.

In the birch wood,
there was an ant nest.

The insects, busy black and fast,
were crawling in the grass.

No one remembers such
a dreary supper...

I drink to Robak's health,
Seneschal, clink your glass with mine!

I will not give the hide to the Monk.

The Chamberlain shall give it to him
who has deserved the second reward.

...The Count shall have it

to adorn his hunting chamber!

Let it hang among the
trophies on the wall

until the Judge gives me
the castle as a whole.

A violation in the castle over
which the Judge has his authority,

for he dines here, in these walls.

Dare not harm my servitor,

he shall be safe inside my doors!

...Buffoon! Little Count!

Let us duel next morn,
we will choose our weapons and place,

Now flee apace!

The art of throwing knives,
terrible in close combat,

had been neglected,
it was familiar to the elders...

The Seneschal tried it.

Protazy, although a bold man,
was somedeal scared,

when he opened the door
and not a soul was there.

The Dobrzynskis' backwater
was distinguished among others

by the bravery of their sons and
the beauty of their daughters.

...The Lithuanians shall be fain
to demonstrate to Napoleon

their desire to unite with the Crown,
their sister, yet again,

and for Poland to be restored.

Wars with the Muscovites!
Fight! Attack them!

His name was Buchman
but he was a Pole.

My predecessors in
their eloquent speeches.

Confederation is what we need!
That is what we bid!

Maciej is our marshal, and his Switch
is a baton!

The Penknife bows to the Switch.

Robak had said to cleanse our home
of filth and dirt

before Napoleon shall come.
Who is the dirt of our land!

Why, it is Soplica!

But the Judge loves Poland,
and Polish tradition,

he gives no admission
to Muscovite customs.

When I return from Prussia
I go to Soplicowo

to the Center of the Polish clan,
to cleanse myself of all that is German!

...If you wish to harm the Judge,
it is ill...

Where is a lawyer? Or a cell?

For there are legions of servicemen
in his village!

Brothers, I side with the law!

Since the parley over the resurrection
of Poland

and the common good began,
you all were quarrelling mad!

But let one raise his private grudges
and you agree, you fools!

Let us storm the Soplicas!

...The clear sky
embraced the earth tight,

when it was silvered
by the moonlight.

Brother! I lived and
wished to die as a monk,

without revealing my
name not only to the mob

but even to you and my own son!

In case of war,
the secret is known to you,

finish what I had begun,
you are a Soplica, remember!

A comet is a sign of war
or a feud!

It appeared o'er Soplicowo,
it is not good.

I could not marry damsel Rosa
for I am in love with Zosia,

one's heart cannot be changed!

I shall marry you off to her myself!

Telimena will not let me have Zosia!

Soplica! The long-time enemy of my kin,

I shall punish thou for
thy old and new crimes!

In the name of the Father
and the Son!

My lord, art thou a villain?

The blood of the innocent
shall never stain my sword,

you, the Soplicas, are my prisoners,
and I am your lord!

The Count calls for the Apparitor

to announce to the noble commission

the Count's immediate intromission
to the castle...

I am Jacek Soplica...

I shall never bend
under human wrath,

for I am in God's hand.

...To slay him so stealthily,
a Polish lord, in Poland

and in league with the Muscovites!

It is deceit,
I was not in league with them!

Oh why, my Gerwazy,
why did you miss then?

The Pantler's daughter was sent to
Siberia with her husband, the voivod.

She died there, very young
and left Zosia, her child in Poland

I ordered to tend to her...

...I wedded the first girl I saw,

she was poor and I did not love her
at all.

Poor Thaddeus's mother.

I fled the country!

Where I was, what I suffered!
I will not speak.

I did not run for glory at the swords,
arrows and spears.

...To the imperial secret office
the war had come,

The Emperor declared it
to all the world,

they called for a meeting
of the Parliament in Warsaw.

May God forgive you the same way!

...My Lord, let thy servant go in peace.

Year 1812.

What a year! That no man had ever seen!

War! War!

The rumble reached every
corner of the Lithuanian land.

Soplicowo did lie
near a wide road,

on which two generals rode,
from the Neman.

Jacek, called Robak,
was wounded two times

when the fortified Somosierra
was captured by the Uhlans.

The Seneschal must
prepare a feast

to exalt the house of Soplica
for ever and ever.

...Poles had fought with
Lithuania more severely

than the Soplicas with the Horeszkos.

The Crown's and Lithuania's
fates had been odd,

the two are like spouses!

What was joined together by God,
the devil has separated!

If today Lithuania
and the Crown unite,

all is pardoned and reconciled!

But marriage, dear Zosia,
is a matter of great importance!

Thou must listen to thy heart,
not to one's reflection or stance.

The maids said
that I was in love,

if I truly am,
I love thee, my lord.

I shall die at peace!

There is a man who
will care for my dear child.

A Polish hero is what Poland needs,
not a French, not an Italian,

but a Piast, Jan or Jozef...

The guests gathered in the great hall

waiting for the feast,
they spoke of it all.

Whether someone had counselled
Zosia to dress in such garments,

or whether she knew by instinct...

Have thou forgotten thy vows?

Oh, gullible,
why did I wear these bands?

Meanwhile,
the guests had finished the dessert

and went outside for fresh air.

Here the feast must end.

...Oh thou, whose grace awakens painful
delights and blissful ordeal!

Let us, free men,
make the villagers free too,

let us grant them the heritage
of the land they were born on,

which they gained by bloody toil,
which nourishes and enriches us all.

If thou will ordain them free,

my heart will be closer to thee...

...To your health, fellow men!
To the free and equal Poles!

To the health of the people!

Long live the generals!

Vivat the army,

vivat the people,

vivat all classes!

For the winter,
Jankiel was nowhere to be found,

he suddenly appeared
with the High Command.

There were many dulcimer players,

but none of them dared to perform
in Jankiel's presence.

Jankiel, please!
This is my betrothal, play for me!

Have you not often promised
to play at my wedding?

I call on the name of the Lord

to bless our intention to
save and elate our Motherland...

Vivat the king! Vivat the parliament,

vivat the nation, vivat all classes!

I recognize those notes!
That is Targowica!

Poland has not yet perished!
March Dabrowski to Poland!

General, Lithuania awaited you as
long as the Jews awaited the Messiah.

The bards soothsaid your coming,

you were sent like a miracle
from the skies.

Live and fight, our general!

The polonaise shall begin.

Ah, perhaps he is the last!
Watch him, young men!

The last who can lead the polonaise
in such fashion!

Until Zosia became weary,
she met Thaddeus on her way,

she wished to stay by his side,

too afraid to lose this chance,
she ended the dance.
