ANDY: Spring has sprung.

It's time to move into
my new year of building.

I'm feeling really
apprehensive about
starting my sawmill up.

Dangerous piece of equipment
and I learned that lesson
the hard way this fall.

And I had a bad accident and
lopped off the end of my pinky
finger and I haven't started

the sawmill up
since I did that.

I gotta say, walking up to the
mill and having that feeling
that I had when that happened,

it has me a little bit queasy.

You know how it is when you
fall off a horse, it's kind of
hard to get back on sometimes.

But, out here,
I got no choice.

All right.

And then the moment of truth.

(theme music plays)

♪ ♪

This fall, I had a pretty bad
accident and so it's been a
little bit nerve-wracking

using the sawmill again.

I'm being very careful now
about where I put my hands
working around the sawmill.

But I'm getting into
a rhythm and hopefully I can
take this wood and turn it

into a modified greenhouse.

NARRATOR: Along the
Yukon River, Andy Bassich
relies on his greenhouse

to produce 80% of
his yearly food supply.

Modifying the
structure will improve
its efficiency.

But the summer's
growing season is brief,
and he must begin work now or

the year's crop is at risk.

ANDY: I'm trying to modify
my past gardening techniques
to hopefully get an

extra week and a
half, two weeks' worth
of growing this year.

It should cut a lot faster
than that, so that blade is
definitely getting dull.

I think I may have
busted it though.

I didn't have the carriage
back far enough and I brought
the saw down for the next cut

right on top of the log
and it just snapped it.

These blades are
incredibly sharp.

You have to always wear
gloves around them.

I'm gonna go get another
blade, stick it on there.

Try to figure this
out on my own and I know
there are probably more

efficient ways
of doing things.

That's kind of a
learning process.

Sometimes you have to
learn the hard way.

Big part of why I
live out here is I like
doing things for myself.

Every board I cut here is
probably equivalent to about
three or four boards going to

town and buying them.

So it's a big savings for me
and the satisfaction of going
out getting the trees and

doing it myself
is probably a big part of
why I like doing this too.

If I had to spend a day
milling lumber just to make
the boards that I needed to do

the next step for
this greenhouse, the best
thing I can do is get that

greenhouse up
and operating early.

And that way, as
the springtime sun comes out,
I can get my plants planted

earlier and hopefully
I can get a little better
harvest out of everything.

I made a nice stack of
lumber today to do the
greenhouse makeover.

So, I can get going on
this project tomorrow.

GLENN: Try and focus on the
positive as much as possible.

Very important
concept in life.

This is a really cool spot.

I've looked at
it from the air when
I was flying over,

but this is the first time
I've ever walked here.

NARRATOR:
For Glenn Villeneuve,

warming spring
temperatures make for
ideal travel conditions,

allowing him to explore
new territory and
improve his knowledge of

his surroundings in
the Brooks Range.

He's traveled
20 miles by water, ice,
and land to Thru Creek Pass,

which he's never explored
before but exploring
means uncertainty,

and Glenn must be wary
of his new environment.

-I'm in a different habitat
now from what I'm used to.

Whoa. That is a
grizzly bear track.

You can see where
the claws are.

When you see a track
that size, you have
to think about the bear.

I really enjoy
watching grizzlies.

The track's exciting but
I wanna see the bear.

In the whole summer,
I only saw 11 bears.

Over here, I can see
that there are definitely
more bear around.

Feels different
walking on this trail.

It's an animal trail
but I'm an animal too.

Why not use it?

And for whatever
reason, the bears like
traveling through here.

Talk about bear
tracks, holy cow.

There's all size of bears.

I just don't see
this much bear sign
over around my cabin.

Every place is unique.

You go someplace new,
you see new things.

I'm up a little higher
in the mountains.

It's really steep terrain.

It's rocky.

The lake here is smaller.

The forest is a lot sparser.

I wanna explore this
valley for a while.

And I wanna camp
nearby this lake.

I want a good view.

If a bear comes through here,
if there are sheep on the
hillside, I wanna see 'em.

So I'll look around.

I'll find a place with good
level ground and a good view.

That's what I'm looking for.

JESSIE: I'm a determined
person who's self-sufficient
and gets the job done no

matter what it takes.

I got myself a nice
pile of boards here.

I'm gonna build
a new smokehouse.

I got a nice dry
piece of ground.

It's gonna to be about
14-foot-wide by 14-foot and
that's to enable lots of

circulation of the air
to help cure the fish.

Last year, I built
a smokehouse far away from
here and it never worked

out that good.

It's too small, gets too hot.

And it's not close enough
near my dogs to where I
can tend it constantly and

make the quality of fish that
I need to put up to sustain
myself through the winter.

I got king salmon running
down the river right now.

I missed my opportunity
to get kings.

I'm gonna to have to wait
again until next year.

One of the next things I got
to do is start knocking down
some more of these trees.

I'm cutting these trees
down, create some air.

It's gonna to make firewood
and it's gonna make smoking
wood for smoking my fish.

Killing two birds
with one stone.

Some of this cottonwood that
I cut down will be perfect
for smoking or spruce will

go in for firewood.

That's the way I like to live,
is using the land around me
for what I do and build.

That was an important
stage to get done.

Now I gotta lay
out where I'm gonna
put my smokehouse at.

Fifteen.

Now that looks nice.

See the key thing is,
is I don't want it too small.

Then it's just gonna
build up heat and it's
gonna be cooking my fish.

I want my fish to slowly
cure with the smoke.

I'm gonna to set my uprights.

I need a hole to put them in.

It ain't easy, there's
roots in the ground.

This pointed bar here just
helps to break it all up.

Part of what I like
living out here, is
staying in great shape,

doing practical things that
need to be done. Keeps

me strong.

All the projects
in the summer keep you
strong for the winter.

That there ought
to be deep enough.

starting to come together but

I'm gonna go off and go
look for a few ducks.

Black ducks are my goal
'cause they're ocean ducks.

So I wanna go down
and try to get the last of
them really big ducks before

they're gone with the ice.

I wanna take my double
barrel 12-gage black powder
and see what it takes to

knock things down with.

I know it's not a modern
12-gage but it will
still get the job done.

NARRATOR: The Hailstones
survive by harvesting
resources along the various

trails and waterways
near Noorvik.

Today, Chip is embarking
on a solo hunt through the
river channels for black ducks,

a rich source of
fat and protein.

But the window to secure
this delicacy is already
closing as the birds will

soon disappear when
they pair off and mate.

-Well, I'm gonna go
boat around for a while,
check out the sea ice.

So now the river's been
clear of ice, two weeks now
but over here in the ocean,

it's a whole different story.

This is where the
ice is right now.

It's June, it's our
springtime, our ice in
the river's gone out,

now the ice in the
ocean needs to go.

So I'm gonna go down there
and see what's prowling
around down there.

I'm no stranger to hunting
by myself but this is what
I was doing 25 years ago,

when my kids were
little and I couldn't
take them along.

This is what I do.

I don't always take
other people with me.

And it's what I want to do.

This is what I'm
doing for fun.

I'm just gonna keep
at it until I'm dead.

Let's see what
I come home with.

This is the arctic and
the spring has sprung.

We got one big long
day ahead of us with
this 24-hour sunshine.

And I plan on making
it a good day.

Lower 48, some people might
call them sea scoters.

Up here, they call
them Tuungaagruk.

Black ducks are delicious.

If I can get four
or five of those, boy,
we'd have a good meal.

They're really big ducks too.

It's a duck.

CHIP: (bleep),
(bleep) misfire, huh?

It doesn't always go off.

It's been like that
since I got it.

About half the time,
it'll go off.

It's just not my
fate right now.

NARRATOR: Chip is on a solo
hunt for black ducks, a rich
source of fat and protein

that's only available
this time of year.

But due to a legal issue,
Chip can only use a black
powder gun for the hunt,

an antique weapon with an
unreliable firing mechanism.

-There's a bird all right.

(gunshot)

Ah. He dove.

I took a shot and he dove.

There it is.
It's a duck.

Ah. He dove again.

I'm not really a big fan
of this black powder but
it's gonna have to do.

There he is.

He doesn't seem to be
too ruffled up yet.

I'll go ruffle his feathers.

(gunshot)

Well, that really sucks.

Problem is I'm using
a black powder substitute,
because that's what you

can fly up here.

You can't really
fly real black powder up
here very easily 'cause

it's really volatile.

With this stuff
being so safe, it
doesn't ignite a lot.

(gunshot)

Nope.

Duck keeps diving and diving.

I'm using pretty big pellets.

I'd know if I hit him.

Duck's over there, doing
the same thing he's done
since I seen him first.

Oh, well.

There's more out there.

ANDY: Envision it, strive for
it, learn what you need to
do, and then make it happen.

That's my philosophy of
life living out here.

I'm gonna to spend the next
day or so here, trying to get
my greenhouse makeover done.

I put the plastic on while
there was still a lot of snow
on the ground around here to

see the effects of getting
this closed in, getting
solar radiation in here.

And so far, it looks like
it's doing exactly what I
was hoping it was gonna do.

Late spring months, March and
April, are staying much colder
than they used to stay and

that really has been making
it difficult for me to get
an early start on my plants.

So I wanna do a
modification now.

I wanna put a permanent
corrugated greenhouse plastic
over this so that this won't

get snow on it in the
wintertime and as soon as the
sun starts coming back in

February, I'll
start getting some solar
heating going on in here,

and hopefully it'll allow this
ground to be drier and warmer
quicker so I can get my plants

in here much earlier and get
a jump on the growing season.

The other reason why I'm
investing in the corrugated
sheeting is this plastic will

last me a couple years and
then I have to replace it,
and it gets pretty expensive.

And so, I'm kind of feeling
like spending the money, do
a good job on putting the

corrugated stuff up, and
then I'm good forever.

I don't ever have to worry
about doing this again.

All right. Getting going
on this project finally.

So what I got here is
I, I got strings set up where
I'm gonna to be nailing my

purlin strips across here.

You know, normally if I
was framing a house, these
would just go on top and

it'd be really quick to
nail all these up.

But I want the added
support of these rafters on
the material so I'm gonna,

I'm gonna lay these in
between here like this.

And that will give the
plastic support on this
surface and this surface.

It kind of feels
good to build again.

There's something about
construction and
fabricating things for me

that just really turns me on,
I really like it.

All right. That's
looking pretty good.

One down and one, two, three,
four, five, six, seven,
eight, nine, ten, eleven.

One down and 22 more to go.

One thing I'm not, I'm not
an absolute perfectionist.

But I do, whenever I'm
framing and building, I
really like things to look

right to the eye.

I learned a long time ago,
don't be too much of a
perfectionist because then you

just disappoint yourself.

I don't mind if something is
a little bit off but the more
carpentry work a guy does,

the more he learns where he
can kind of fudge things and
where he better pay attention.

(chuckles)

That could have
been disastrous.

It's something I
always think about.

If I fall off of here, there's
no way to get to town.

There's no way to
get anybody in here.

It would be very, very
bad to get hurt right now.

(hammering)

Yay!

I don't know why I'm so
excited, I'm only half done.

All right. Ooh.

All right, take a
quick little break.

It's kind of hard on the back
here being bend over so much.

Get this other side up
and once I get the
walls on it,

the rest should go pretty easy.

JESSIE: It's all about
small steps, not big steps.

How I got to where I'm being
successful was by taking the
small steps to get there.

NARRATOR: Jessie relies on
king salmon to feed himself
through the months ahead,

but before he can catch fish
in the river, he's building
a smokehouse to store and

preserve his catch.

Jessie must now
complete the foundation.

A critical phase in
the construction.

JESSIE: The first
one wasn't that easy.

Imagine I'll learn a
trick or two to make
the next one easier.

Oh, that one's so much easier.

For me, living off-grid
and living off the land out
here, it's really important,

good attitude.

Attitude's everything.

It's what you wake up
with in the morning.

Usually how you start
your day is how you're
gonna finish your day.

All right, that's the
last post in for my
main support system.

Next step's gonna to be for
me is, I'm gonna need to get
some bracing in and that's

where my first fish
racks are gonna hang
off of in there.

Since I don't have a
helper and I'm doing
this by myself, is,

I'm gonna use this ladder
here to hold this end up.

I've had to learn how to do
things like this, you know?

Without a helping hand, just
takes a little bit of thought
and thinking things out.

For me, it's not about
roughing it out here, it's
figuring out how to smooth it.

It's still not easy
when you figure out
an easy way to do it.

That works really good.

I thought it was
gonna rain today.

It moved in pretty quick.

(bleep).

Now I'm worried
about getting cold.

If I waited for good
weather to get things
done all the time,

then I'd probably never
get hardly anything done.

If I can get these three in,
then I can start working on
my planking on the bottom.

I should be able to
hang myself 250 fish.

And with another layer
up high, I could hang
another couple hundred.

This fish house
is nice and big.

So I've gotten done what
I can here in the rain
but I'm gonna have to let

this dry off where I
can get up and start
setting my crosspieces

on the top.

That's a long ways up
there and that could be a
critical mistake for

me to fall off.

One thing that don't mix
is rain and green logs.

GLENN: I feel alive.
Every day's a new adventure.

And I never know
what's gonna come next.

I want a really nice
place 'cause I wanna
spend some time here.

I wanna get to know this area.

I want a place where
I have a good view.

I'm gonna to keep looking.

NARRATOR: Glenn has
traveled to an unexplored
area in the Brooks Range

called Thru Creek Pass.

The area may yield
new opportunities.

But finding a place to set
up camp before the weather
turns is a priority.

-It's looking pretty overcast.

I think it could start
raining this afternoon.

I need to find a
place to put my tent.

The ground here is steep.

It's rough.
It's rocky.

Down by the lakeshore,
there are a lot of wet areas.

I need to find a good dry
patch of ground big enough to
lay down, set my tent up on.

This looks a
little scary here.

If I fell off right
here, I'd break my neck.

That's just too steep.

Out here alone, I've learned
not to take too many chances.

There's some overflow on
the creek up here, the
ice is still melting.

There's a lot of water
running out of that ice.

All this flatland down
here is all boggy.

Sometimes it's the hardest
thing just to find a nice
place to put a tent down.

When the wind dies down at
night, this is just gonna
be a big mosquito bog.

I don't wanna camp down here.

Here's a lot of rocks.

This wouldn't be
good to camp on.

They're too uneven and sharp,
that would be uncomfortable.

I was afraid it was gonna
start raining, and it is.

I really don't feel
like getting wet.

Oh, this ledge comes
right down to the water.

This is kind of steep.

I gotta be careful.
I don't wanna get soaking wet.

This is crazy.

GLENN: Frickin-a
this is kind of steep.

This is crazy.

Just a little further.

Okay. Whew. There.
Made it, whoa.

It's kind of tricky.

That was kind of scary.

Sometimes, up on top of a
little hump like this, you'll
find some flat spot where you

can put your tent.

It's worth checking out.

Ah, hey, the sun's
coming back out.

I got lucky, it
stopped raining.

There could be a
place right up here.

Hey, I like this.

Sure enough, there's
a spot right here.

Looks great.

Look at the view.

The ground's flat up here.

I can see the whole lake
from this one point.

If a bear comes walking along,
I'll see it right from here.

And I'm pretty
close to the water.

When I need a drink,
when I need to wash up,
I got the lake right there.

I like it.

I'll set my tent
up right here.

This is a place I
could spend some time.

This is beautiful.

ANDY: If you go into
your day with just a goal
and you accomplish it,

you can sleep good at night.

That's what I believe
in and that's what I
work towards every day.

This is gonna be a dang nice
greenhouse when it's all done.

Probably got another
solid day of work on this.

Last night I got quite a
bit of rain coming down,
and early this morning.

And so I'm kind of feeling the
urgency to get this top part
of this greenhouse weathered in

because the whole point of this
is to try and get this ground
to dry out quick enough

so I can till it and
get my plants in here.

I was feeling a little sore
this morning from bracing all
day yesterday walking around

on this stuff.

The roof part is always
slow because you're
working by yourself.

You're up and down ladders.

You're always having to watch
every little step you make.

Where you're
putting your feet.

What are your
putting your feet on.

And you're just
constantly under stress
and, and kind of tense.

I'm always nervous
about falling.

Some of these boards
are kind of old and they've
been out in the weather and

they're a little bit rotten.

And so, I've
been pretty darn nervous
walking around up there.

All right, looking good.

Hi Berg boy!

Here comes the foreman.

He says come on,
get that stuff up.

One of the things you
have to learn when you live
out in a place alone is

how to work alone.

A lot of the projects
that I do are kind of two man
projects but I don't have two

men, so I have to kind
of figure out a way
to do these on my own.

Plus, I kind of get a
kick out of the whole idea
of being able to figure out

how to do projects on
my own and get them done.

And then you know you
did the whole thing.

There's nothing like doing
a project from beginning
to end, completely solo,

to give you a sense of pride
and accomplishment that you
don't get any other way.

I think I got the roof done.

No more ladders.

I'm exhausted.

Ugh, man.

That's a job I'm glad's over.

I mean I'm glad I did
it but whew man, that
was a lot of, uh,

bracing and just a lot
of kind of stress walking
around on that roof.

But it feels good
to get the roof on.

Now all I need to do is
hook up the rototiller
and go to town on it.

I'm hoping I can get some
plants in here by tomorrow
if all goes well today.

I still got quite a few
hours of daylight left.

Like, infinity.

It never gets dark anymore.

And that's the only
reason why I'm able to
garden the way I do.

If I didn't have the
long hours of daylight,
there's no way I'd be

able to garden
the way I do here.

The soil is still
a little bit wet.

Still clumping
up a little bit.

It'd be nice if it was
a little bit dryer.

It would actually grind
this up a little bit finer.

But I think it's
gonna be okay.

This greenhouse feeds me.

And without this greenhouse,
I'd have to probably go out
and work for other people.

So, this greenhouse actually
gives me freedom and food.

That's a good day's work.

The greenhouse is
just about ready.

The pots are ready.

The plants are ready.

Andy's not quite ready, he
needs a good night's sleep.

I'll hit this tomorrow.

CHIP: You move with
the seasons, you move
with the animals.

Since we hunt and we fish,
we have to be able to travel
and we have to be able

to stay where
the resources are.

Nada. Bummer.

NARRATOR:
Chip is scouring the local
waterways for black ducks,

a valued food source
this time of year.

But legal issues have
forced Chip to hunt with
a black powdered gun,

an antiquated and
unreliable weapon.

-Right at the edge
of the ice I see a couple
hundred swans over there.

We can get three per year.

All I need is one,
I'd be happy with one.

Hundreds of swans out here,
we just got to be patient.

We'll just go along, coming
to a stop when we see
a couple that are in range.

Gee, I thought we
were getting close
up to these guys but

I guess they
just won't let us.

150 yards just isn't good
enough for the shotgun.

We'll go over here and if
we don't catch some over here,

we'll make our
turn and we'll go back.

(gunshot)

Too far away.

I saw my pellets
hit underneath it, so
that means that my pellets

didn't have the power.

I need to aim above
it about five feet.

Ah, you got to be patient.

CHIP: I got one
duck right here.

Got another one right
there I got to go pick up.

They are about to mate and
pair up and get on nests.

We don't hunt them after that.

The males won't be very fat
and neither will the females.

The females are laying eggs
and the males are competing
with each other trying

to get something to munch.

That's juicy.
That's a nice chunk.

Yeah, I wanted to come
out here and see if I
could get myself a couple

of birds and it paid off.

Instead of trying to give
these ones any lead I didn't
give anything at all.

And that's that.

One pull of the
trigger, and two birds.

What do you know?

I got a lot more
hunting to do.

I got to get up a decent meal
at least, make it worth my
gas, make it worth my time.

(gunshot)

All right.
We got a black duck.

A real delicious
ocean type duck.

See how he's way much bigger
than these other ducks?

Need fewer for a meal.

So, if we could connect
with a couple more of these
guys, we got it in the bag.

There's a bunch of black
ducks coming along.

(gunshots)

I just shot two ducks.

I started leading a lot more
with this shot gun, you know?

Putting the barrel
way ahead of them.

You know instead
of leading them
by about two feet,

I lead them by about
seven or eight feet.

I've been hitting behind
them on and on and on all
day and now I'm really on.

I'm on the ducks.

I got black ducks and
two fresh water birds.

In a subsistence lifestyle,
it's satisfying as long as
your able to get enough to

feed everybody.

If you want to have real
troubles, try going home
with only half of a dinner.

Or maybe none at all.

I got plenty of
ducks, this is good.

I'm going to get
on my way home.

I think my wife will be
pretty, plenty, plenty happy.

It's all working
out pretty good.

JESSIE: Keep getting better,

don't go backwards
and it's amazing what
hard work can achieve.

Sun's finally starting
to come out here.

I've been waiting
out this rain storm.

Yeah, that sun feels good.

That's gonna dry that
top out here real quick, but
until then I'm gonna go ahead

and start getting some
more structure set up.

I'm just making a little
notch to slide this in,
making it a little bit taller

than it should be
so I can fit it in tight.

If this had been me three
years ago, I would've just
slapped it together because I

was so pressed for time and
so pressed for everything.

These are starting to
dry up nice, that's good.

The kings are
running right now.

People are starting to
catch them around here.

They're only gonna be
running for a couple weeks.

So, I'm getting this
thing done just in time
as opposed to the past.

So, the hardest part of
this project, I'm thinking,
is gonna be getting

a piece up here.

It's definitely gonna
be the most dangerous.

All that green log sliding
real easy can help me, it
can also be a real pain.

Okay.

It's strong enough for me to
walk around on it now but
every piece I attach to it is

just gonna become a
little bit less wobbly.

Rewarding feeling at the
end of the day, seeing what
you can do by yourself.

Got another storm moving
in here pretty quick.

You'll get nothing done in
Alaska without rain gear.

My last major piece of the
structure of the smokehouse.

All right, now the
structure's in place.

Everything is
tied in together.

It's time to start
covering up the smokehouse.

GLENN: I think every day
about what's the most
important thing to do.

What's the best way to
spend this day, because
you only have so many.

Whoa. It's kind
of windy up here.

This is quite a
spot to look from.

I can come out here, right
in front of my tent, and I
can see a lot of territory.

And it's all new to me.

It's amazing to think,
that for a millennia,
things have pretty much

been the same here.

You can't see any sign
of humans having altered
this landscape here.

And that's a rare
thing nowadays.

Most places you go
on this Earth, people
have left their mark.

But out here, it's
still wild nature.

Oh, for a second
I thought I saw something,
but I think it's just a rock.

There's a bear.

This is what I've
been waiting for.

Oh, he's just sitting
down, looking around.

That's who's been laying
down those tracks.

Most bears don't want
much to do with people.

So, if they smell
you or they hear you,
they'll just take off.

All last summer I only
saw 11 grizzly bears.

So, it's exciting to
get a chance to see one.

Oh, I think he's
gonna go in the brush.

Yup. There he goes.

I love the watching the
animals and there's no animal
I like watching better

than a grizzly bear.

Okay, it's time
to start fishing.

Definitely wanna
bring my .44, I know
there are bears around.

It's time to
get to know this lake
a little bit better.

I've got my fishing kit here.

I wanna find myself a dinner.

When you're backpacking,
you really have to
think about every ounce.

Every gram counts.

So, I've got a very
lightweight fishing kit.

Any fish in here?

Are there any
fish in this lake?

I'd really like
to find myself something
to eat tonight.

But sometimes small lakes
don't have any fish at all.

I think it's time to move,
I'm not getting any action here.

I really like exploring a
new place, looking around,
seeing what's there.

Getting to understand
the environment.

I've had years
to learn about the
lake that I live on.

I know all the different
places to go, depending on
what kind of fish I want,

depending on what
time of year it is.

I know what technique
to get them, but here,
it's all different.

I didn't get any action.

Hook came out just as I
got it on the grass here.

It's not very big.

It's a grayling.

But it's got some
food in it I can eat.

I didn't bring a whole
lot of food with me.

So, I definitely
need this fish.

And if I can catch more,
that'll be even better.

Whew. Almost got off.

This is interesting.

Because in my lake, there
are no grayling at all.

I've had my camp 17 years,
20 miles from here, I've
never caught a grayling.

Over here, very first
day I got a grayling.

Interesting.

And I saw a couple others.
So, I'm gonna stick at it.

People ask me what I
do for entertainment.

Getting my food.
That's entertaining.
It's exciting.

If I walked up to the
fish counter and asked
for a pound of fish,

I wouldn't have
half as much fun.

Look at this, I got a fish on.

Oh. I got another one.

Two grayling.
That's not bad.

They're small fish,
but I got two of them.

I'll go cook dinner now.

My fish are cooked.
This is good.

That came out just right.

The way I feel right now,
is a lot like I felt when
I first got to Alaska.

Everything was new and
I was out exploring.

I'm really glad that I
decided to get out and
see some new things.

Another storm has passed and,
uh, I got a good little window
of opportunity of working out

of the rain and I got all my
framework done here so the
next step is getting this

thing closed in and
getting some fish and start
and fill up my smoker.

I didn't really
think this out.

With any luck, this will
span the whole way across.

And that's good,
it'll make it.

I got my first piece
on, I'll be excited
to get this done and get

some fish hanging in this thing.

I feel a sense of excitement
whenever I start getting to
this stage of a project.

I start thinking about the
reward and benefit of the
vision and through hard work,

and drive, and determination,
and doing what a lot
of people told me it wasn't

gonna be possible,

I've been
able to do this stuff.

Working together with my dogs.

I sacrificed a lot
for them and it ended up
paying off in the long run.

Now they're paying for
me to better my life.

This is perfect.

This is gonna shed water and
I can feel the air circulating
and flowing through here.

This is better than my
last smokehouse tenfold.

It's bigger, it's closer
to my house, right next to
the river where I can pull my

boat up to it.

This is good, I'm
really happy with this.

I'm looking forward to
getting out on the river
and getting fishing.

happy with that.

good day out by myself.

Haven't done that
in quite a while.

It's a nice warm home.

finishing the remodel of
the greenhouse structure,

it's time for Andy to move
onto the most critical
phase of the project.

Planting his crop
for the year.

-It's always a big
day when the plants
go in the greenhouse.

Then I know it's
spring and summer.

I actually grow
them upside down.

This plant, within
about 24-hours will
actually grow down,

turn and start growing
up, uh, towards the sun.

Peppers really like the
heat so, it's always hotter
up here in the greenhouse.

I've got Anaheims, which
are kind of a mild, hot.

I've got Poblanos which are
kind of like a green pepper.

I've got sweet yellow
banana peppers, those
are some of my favorites.

That's a good start
on my peppers.

I think I'm gonna lay out
some, uh, zucchinis here.

Growing food is just fun.

I mean it's, there's
nothing more fun than,
than watching plants grow.

Knowing that you
started them from seed.

For me, gardening is,
is very therapeutic.

This isn't work for me at
all, this is just plain fun.

I like having my
hands in the dirt.

I like seeing the plants grow.

It's a good start.

I got peppers, tomatoes,
zucchinis, squash, and a
whole lot more to plant.

The rebuild went really well.

I really like the new
material on the greenhouse.

It's letting in
a lot more light.

24 hours of light
makes 24 hours of heat,

24 hours of
heat makes warm soil.

Warm soil makes warm, nice
plants grow really fast.

So, I'll be able to leave
it up all winter long.

No snow in here.

Which is gonna
make this dry out.

So hopefully I can even
start earlier next year.

It's a new day,

it's a new summer,
and it's time to get
some plants growing.
