there's a storm coming.

Anything that's
gonna blow away has
got to be taken care of.

So, Agnes is, uh, burying
stuff and uncovering stuff.

I got to go get wood
so we have heat.

The girls are out getting
ice for drinking water.

We all got a little
something to do right now.

So, we're all a
little bit busy.

NARRATOR: The Hailstones are
spending the winter at their

hunting grounds in
Kiwalik, an area rich
in vital resources.

Staying one step
ahead of Mother Nature is
the key to their survival.

And with the possibility
of a storm approaching,

the time to prepare is now.

CHIP: We got to be
kind of ready for it.

It might be the storm
that never happens,

and it might be the storm
that they didn't predict.

You don't take chances with
that stuff around here,

because the weather man's
the only guy who gets to lie
consistently and keep his job.

And we're prepared
for an east wind,

which is actually
our worst wind.

So, we might need firewood
for a couple days.

I have at least two days'
worth of firewood here already,

but you can
never have too much,
and you can never be sure.

If I don't come back by dark
or something, please help me.

AGNES: Yup.

CHIP: But if this storm
is coming up like it is,
it ain't gonna be no fun.

AGNES: Yup.

CHIP: I'll be back in,
uh, maybe a couple hours.

AGNES: Yeah, be safe.
CHIP: Yup.

Out here, that's
just the way it is.

You get storms, then
you get the next storm.

If it wasn't stormy, it
wouldn't the arctic, would it?

CAROL: Look at that!

CAROL: Look how blue that is.
TINMIAQ: Yeah, looks clean.

We got a winter
weather advisory,

and we were going to have
some, uh, pretty bad winds.

So, my sister Caroline and I
went out to go get some ice.

That way we could have
ice all week to melt,

and won't have to try to go
out there and do it every day.

And just get ready
to hunker down.

And make sure we're warm,
and have food and good,

fresh ice to make into water.

We're all helping
each other out,

and we've all figured out
a pretty good system here,

being a family and
working together,

and getting most of the
stuff that we need done.

And pretty easy when
we all work together.

That should be enough right
now, shall we go back home?

pretty awesome.

When we wanna get done with
chores in, like, just a day,

we all decide what we wanna do
and we all go out and do it.

It's faster and easier when
we all divide and conquer.

GLENN: Eighteen years ago,
I came to the Brooks Range,

and I found my
world right here.

This is the place I love.

Yeah, this is from the
last caribou I got.

This is the last leg of
that last caribou I got.

she thinks of that.

maintains a simple lifestyle

hunting, fishing,

and gathering to survive.

But with the arrival
of his partner Trisha,

stepdaughter Amelia,
and baby Agatha,

Glenn's world is changing.

GLENN: I'm gonna
go out hunting.

I got a little baby now.

The first food she
ate other than breast
milk was caribou meat.

This caribou meat, it
feeds my whole family.

It's important to us.

Meat is really a central
part of our diet.

And caribou provide
about half the
meat we eat every year.

TRISHA: Bye.

GLENN: Have a good day,
back here.

TRISHA: We will.
Does the fun start now?

GLENN: Today I'm out
looking for caribou.

I haven't seen a single
caribou in over three weeks.

But this time of year,
caribou are migrating.

And some years they come
right through this valley.

If I want to intercept
them, I got to walk around.

I got to see what's going on.

From my camp, I
can't see everything.

I can't see if there are
caribou in the forest.

I got to get out, walk around,
see if I can find some.

You never know what's
going on until you get
out and start walking.

Two very important
things to me,

my family life and being out
in the wilderness, hunting.

And I got both of
them right here.

Some people get up and
go to work in an office,

some people get up
and go to work in
a factory, I get up,

go to work out here
in the mountains,

looking around
for food to eat.

It's really slow-going,

walking in this kind of
snow this time of year.

Difficult traveling
conditions.

Takes a lot of energy.

Just got to take it
one step at a time.

Oh wow, this is caribou
sign, right here.

This whole area's cratered up.

Dozens of caribou moved
right through here.

See these lichens?

That's what the caribou eat.

They're digging through
the snow right to the ground
to get to their food here.

Some caribou have been here.

But I need to find
where the caribou are,

not just where they were.

Hopefully, I'll intercept
some more further along.

Caribou are huge migrators.

They walk hundreds and
hundreds of miles every year.

And they don't always
follow the same routes.

You never know exactly
which way they're gonna go.

Sometimes they're
down in the lake,

sometimes they're up
on the mountaintops.

They're not sitting around.

They're on the move.

And when they come through,
they're here one day,

they're gone the next.

So, when you see them,
you got to go after them.

SUE: This year, the theme is,
"Let it snow, let it snow."

Snow is good,
snow is pretty.

Snow is dangerous, snow is
cruel but it's a way of life.

I feel like I've
got the insides of
camp done pretty well.

I've got heat going,
electricity going.

Now I need to make a list of
the outside of the buildings.

Quickly scan, do
I have a problem?

Yes.

Mental note?

No, move my ass onto
the next project.

NARRATOR: After
several weeks away,

Sue Aikens has
returned to her home and
business at Kavik River Camp.

With a tundra storm
predicted to arrive soon,

Sue must quickly survey her
structures for any frailties

before they put her
livelihood at risk.

SUE: That all
looks pretty good.

My stack looks pretty good.

I keep saying it was a very
easy reentry, but honestly,

I don't know that yet.

The little things
can bury you alive.

What I need to do now
to round out making my
little list of the chores,

I need to get
into Little Red,

and now I just need to look
and see where are the drifts?

Are there things I need
to fix on the runway?

This here is very big drift.

That's gonna take a
little bit longer than
half a day to get done.

I am not allowed to
live here unless I have
a successful business,

and I can't have a
successful business
if it's broke down.

So, I'm finding the
things I need to fix
before the next storm rolls in.

And it is rolling in.

The wind is getting stronger.

You can see the snow moving.

And right out the window here,
it's already starting to fill

in with the snow, and
I just drove past it.

The drift is now three,
four inches above my track.

I'm driving down to the
eastern end of the runway,

turn around, and in the
three to five minutes,

my track was not only
covered up in places,

but piled up another
four inches and maybe
even a foot and a half wide.

The storm is gonna
hit and it's gonna
have a one-two punch.

This right here tells me
if in five minutes I've
got four inches more problem,

then twelve hours is gonna
give me feet of problems.

Looking down below
those hills there,

that's a lot of
snow rolling my way.

All that snow kicking up
just like the Sahara Desert and

it's just snaking at me.

It's a big wall of snow
that's headed my direction.

This is the teaser, the
main event's coming in.

The storm is coming in.

I need to do as
much as I can to beat
as much of it as I can.

And then I'll hunker down
and get ready for the impact.

RICKO: Seasons are what
dictates our life out here.

You got to change
with the seasons.

It's a huge transition coming.

All the snow is about to melt,

the rivers are
gonna start breaking.

There's the plane.

I'm waiting for
my daughter, Simone,
to arrive from Fairbanks.

I'm excited.

I'm going to go geese
hunting with her.

It's getting a lot warmer now.

The days are a lot brighter
and a lot more snow is melting,

so the ground's
coming out and the birds
are starting to show up.

I really wanna get
out there and hunt.

But most importantly,

I wanna spend some
time with my daughter, Simone.

She just came in
from the city.

Hi, Simone.

How are you doing?

SIMONE: Huh?
RICKO: How are you doing?
SIMONE: Good.

My name is Simone Dewilde.
I'm 13 years old.

And I'm here in Huslia with my
dad so we can go bird hunting.

I'm excited to learn because
I never really went hunting.

RICKO: Some birds coming in.

Simone, you brought
them with you.

You see them?

Right, there's one.

I see some more over here.

SIMONE: I see
more on the plane.

RICKO: Did you?

They're really showing up now.

It's time to get out there.

Are you ready?

SIMONE: Yeah.
RICKO: Okay, let's go.

The goal of this trip is
to get some spring birds.

They're just showing up.

But most importantly,
I wanna teach her how
to harvest these birds.

I wanna teach her
how to hunt because
she's never hunted before.

She's never really
used a firearm before.

I'm gonna teach her how
to handle the firearm,

then when that's done,
she could target
practice a little bit.

Nice little spot here.

How's it look?

SIMONE: Pretty.
RICKO: It is pretty.

All right, we got to do
some gun safety first.

I wanna teach you
how to load and
unload this firearm safely.

Don't want no accidents.

I did lose a brother.

Your uncle passed away back,
way back maybe 20 years ago,

and he had one in the
chamber carrying it,

and made one mistake,
and it's game over.

So, safety first.

And then hunting is second.

SIMONE: Okay.

RICKO: Okay.

I really wanna get her queued
in on the safety precautions

and how to handle
a firearm safely.

It's a long ways out here,
living in the village.

You get hurt out here, there's
only one way out of here,

and that's with an airplane.

If there's bad weather,
you're stuck here for days.

You ready to try live rounds?

SIMONE: Yeah.

RICKO: Okay, as long as
you feel comfortable.

My daughter knows all the
safety precautions and how to

handle a gun now.

So, we can get into
target practice.

How you feeling?

SIMONE: Nervous a little bit.
RICKO: You're good, though?
SIMONE: Yeah.

RICKO: Okay, put it on your
shoulder like how I told you.

Squeeze slow.

And it should go off.

Okay, you ready?

SIMONE: Kind of.

Okay, I like it,
But I feel scared.

RICKO: You'll be all right.
Listen, hold on, Hold on.

SIMONE: Is it louder?
RICKO: It's not too loud.

You never shot a
shotgun before,

so you're gonna
naturally feel some fear.

It has some kick, but
you're gonna be all right.

If you fall back, I'll catch
you and you'll be okay.

Okay, you ready?

Okay, look at the
silver container.

And you're good?

SIMONE: I guess.
It's just scary.

RICKO: Okay, try it out.

I'm right here, I'm right
here, if anything goes wrong.

SIMONE: Okay, so it's
good right there?

RICKO: It's good
right there, Simone.

SIMONE: Wow.
RICKO: Whoa!

Damn, you got it.
You're like a natural, Simone.

If that was a duck or
a goose, you would've
had a duck or a goose.

Good job. How you feeling?

SIMONE: Good.

RICKO: All right, let's
get a few more shots.

Even if you don't hit
the target the next one,

maybe that was beginner's
luck, we don't know.

But we'll find out.

I wanna see if you
could work this pump
action like it's intended.

These are two, two
birds right here.

SIMONE: Yeah.

RICKO: All right,
let's try it out.

Simone is getting the
education in the city and

that's really important.

But it's important for me to
have her for these two days

and give her an education
of living in the woods.

She has best of both
worlds that way.

Whatever happens, she's
gonna be able to take care of

herself and maybe take
care of other people.

Okay, you got it?

SIMONE: Oh.

RICKO: You got to
believe in yourself.

You're doing good.
Just relax.

Get that sight lined
up like you did before.

Damn, you're a pro, Simone.

sitting right there.

A little bit low, but close.

This is what makes
you the hunter,

is you got to get
used to the gun.

My daughter's doing real
good at target practice.

Now, all that's left is we
get out there, find the birds,

and hopefully have some luck.

All right, Simone,
good job today.

Should we head home, get
some supper, get some rest,

and head out and
hunt some birds?

SIMONE: Yeah,
that sounds good.

RICKO: Okay, awesome.

As the saying go,
"Give a man a fish,
you feed him today.

Teach a man to fish,
you feed him for life."

So, same principle here.

I got to teach my
daughter how to hunt.

That's just the name
of the game out here.

You got to get out here
and live it to know it.

CHIP: Around here we're
on water, walking, riding,

sliding on it,
like Jesus himself.

NARRATOR: Chip Hailstone is
searching the Kiwalik region

for firewood.

He must provide his family
with a heat source to combat

the elements in case a
storm overpowers the camp.

CHIP: That's the
ocean right there.

This area's a beach.

There's big fall
storms that come in.

They wash tons of wood up.

It basically gets
all this wet wood and it
freezes it to the ground.

This year, we've got
two, three feet of snow,

so all of its under snow.

What I'm looking for are
the ones that have a stump,

and the stump has
them off the ground,

and it's had a chance to dry.

So, I'm gonna take the
dry portion of wood that's
sticking up and out and dry.

I'm gonna take that home.

That's a lot of wood.

This is a pretty
good sized tree.

We have a mental list of
things to do when we're doing

camp chores because there's
stuff that has to be here.

We have to have water,
so we have to get ice.

We have to have heat,
so I am, I'm constantly
thinking of fuel for food,

cooking, and for
heating our tent,
for drying our clothes.

We burn through a lot of wood.

I much prefer not to get
driftwood from the coast

because it's full of
sand and the sand really
eats my chains up,

also it burns really fast.

Kind of like a punky wood,

but if that's the
only wood around,
that's what I got to do.

This is about three days
for the wood for heating and

cooking purposes.

Everybody has chores,
I'm just doing my part.

The ladies will do their part
and everybody's happy with

each other because we're
all helping each other,

we're all thinking
of each other,

and we're all working
for each other.

You can do it smiling,
or you can do it crying,

but you're gonna
end up doing it.

SUE: You never know where
the danger's gonna come from,

but it's coming.

Uh-oh, (bleep).

This storm came in a
little faster than I
thought it was going to.

I don't have a safety
rope that goes from the
Twinkie to my food shed.

And this blow is supposed to
last a better part of a week.

So, I've got to
try and get myself
equipped with some food.

You really don't have a
ton of time when you're
out here in these conditions.

It's, I would say, closer to
thirty below zero wind chill.

The storm is kicking up just
a massive amount of snow in

between the buildings,
and I'm losing sight.

This is a good
old-fashioned blizzard.

Everybody needs
to eat to survive.

I don't care if I've got
a little extra padding,

I got to get the food
and just hunker down.

Spring is when I get
the worst of the storms,

the most snow moving, the
most ground blizzards.

And today is just
a taste of it.

Some people complain
about driving 10 miles
to get to the store.

For me the challenge
is walking 50 yards in
a snowstorm.

(bleep) I can't
breathe hardly.

It's so cold on
my hands and face.

Come on, rope.

I got a knot in my damn rope.

I don't have time to deal
with that freaking knot.

The little things like
fighting with your rope and

untangling it could mean
life and death here.

But this is, this
is my struggle.

And don't get me wrong.

I love the life that I lead.

There's some twisted
part of me that thinks
this is pretty freaking cool.

It's hard to see a little
bit through my eyelashes.

I got to have a
lot of ice on them.

I call it my Sue Manchu,

I'm sure I got my
little ice beard.

But my face is telling me I
better get my booty inside.

Bigger.

This is a little sheep heart.

I'm gonna grab a couple
of bags of veggies.

The conditions are dire
out there to say the least.

I'm gonna try to
make it quick.

Not looking forward
to the journey back
with a heavy bucket.

(groans).

(bleep), okay...

Holy crap.

Woo, bring it on,
Mother Nature!

35 below, snow blowing
like a mother, it's tough.

It's breathing ice crystals,
getting hit with ice crystals,

don't pull your eyes open too
far when you can't see because

you know they're frozen shut.

I could see the Twinkie now.

Definitely having this
rope here was immense.

I was able to get some
food and bring it back.

Yeah, I'm cold.
Yeah, I'm beat to death.

This is one of the
things I live here for.

It's, uh, it's
riding the thunder.

It ain't easy, but
it's the way I like it.

GLENN: This is big country
out here, and you feel small.

And nature's powerful,
you got to remember it.

You get into trouble fast
if you don't remember.

NARRATOR: Glenn is on
the hunt for caribou,

a key source of fat and
protein in the Brooks Range.

After finding
signs that caribou are
migrating through the region,

Glenn must locate
the herd before the
animals travel out of reach.

GLENN: Caribou.

This is a very fresh track.

See the detail?

That's how you can tell.

Those sharp edges
on the track,

the snow hasn't had
time to melt since the
caribou stepped there.

They're headed up this hill,
and I got to follow them.

I don't just go
on a caribou hunt,

I'm always hunting caribou.

You just got to always
be watching for them,

and looking around.

I never know when I'm
gonna have the opportunity.

It's a continuous thing.

Caribou hunting
isn't something I go
out and do for a day,

it's something that's just
part of everyday life here.

There they are.

Caribou are up
on the ridge now.

I got on fresh tracks
here in the woods,

followed them
around for a ways,

looks like they headed
up the mountain.

Those are nice, big
spring bull caribou.

A lot of meat there for my
family if I can get to them.

I'm gonna try and
get those caribou.

It's getting steep now.

(bleep)!

The snow's really
difficult to walk through.

Because it's got
some crust to it.

But it's usually not enough
to support my weight.

So, I step on it, and then
I come crashing through

over and over right
up to my knees.

It's really hard going.

But if I wanna
get those caribou,

I just got to deal with it.

In this country, moose and
caribou are the two main

sources of meat
and fat, and it
takes about five or six

caribou to equal one moose.

So, it's more work.

It's not as efficient
of a way to get food.

But there's always the
possibility of getting caribou

almost anytime up here,
almost any time of the year.

There they are.

The winds blowing
right towards them.

This stinks.

I got to be really
careful in order to get close
enough up in this open terrain

to get a shot.

I got to think about
the wind direction
to conceal my scent.

Caribou got a terrific
sense of smell.

They may smell me
before I get close
enough to get a shot.

If just one of those
caribou notices me,

it'll alert all the others,
and they'll all take off.

Take another little peek here.

I have to be very
sneaky if I'm gonna get
a shot at these caribou.

They're taking off.

Oh.

They're taking off!

Oh. There they go.

They all just jumped up
and got in a bunch and ran.

I think they know
I'm over here.

They're way, way too
far for me to shoot.

Those caribou were
a long ways away.

Well, that's too bad.

They're out of here.

They knew something was up.

Honestly, I think
those caribou,

I think they saw me when
I was way down lower and
they were just keeping an

eye on me.

And then they might've
caught some scent,

or they saw another glimpse
of me peeking over at them,

and they just took off.

They're very wary.

They're getting hunted
all the time by wolves,

and they can't
take any chances.

So, if they feel like
something's not right,

they just clear
out of the area.

Yeah, those caribou got away.

That's the life of
the hunter, sometimes you
come home with some meat,

a lot of times, you don't.

It's not predictable.

It's not like growing a
garden, or raising livestock,

or buying meat in a store.

It's hunting; you just
got to keep at it.

It's a matter of patience.

That's the way hunting goes.

But sooner or later,
you do connect.

RICKO: There's no other way
to learn this lifestyle,

living out here in the
woods, besides doing it.

You got to get out here
and learn it by living it.

You're cold, huh?
The ride out was cold.

SIMONE: Yeah.

RICKO: Yeah, it's a
little windy today.

It ain't as warm
as it should be.

But the weather
owes us nothing.

I guess we got to
take what we get.

I'm real excited to do some
bird hunting with my daughter.

She's able to use the
shotgun safely now.

She's able to
target real good.

Hunting is a tradition
in my culture.

It's taught by an
older family member,

and that's how I
learned to hunt.

So, it's my job now to teach
my daughter how to hunt.

Oh, it's just a waiting game.

Going to be some birds
flying eventually.

RICKO: You know, it's
just how hunting is,

you got to be patient,
you can't get frustrated.

You can't lose hope.

It's always, there's always
some action eventually,

you just got to wait it out.

SIMONE: Uh-hmm.

RICKO: Your feet still cold?

RICKO: When you
shoot your shotgun,

it gets your blood going.

I know you're cold right now,
but as soon as you shoot,

you'll start to come alive.

You'll feel better if
we get some action here.

My daughter, Simone,
has never hunted before.

So, everything is new to her.

It's new to her to be
this far out of Huslia
too in bad conditions,

so just making
the best of it.

RICKO: You hear them?
SIMONE: Yeah.

RICKO: Got one.

I'll get down in case
the other ones fly over.

(making bird call)

All right, got two of them.

Okay, how's your feet?

RICKO: Okay,
they're warming up?

I want you to do
some shooting, too.

I don't wanna be the one
doing all the shooting.

RICKO: Even though it's fun.

You'll shoot?

SIMONE: Yeah.
RICKO: Okay.

It feels good to
have gotten the first two
geese of this spring season.

Hopefully, get a
few more coming in,

that way Simone can take
over on the shooting and
hopefully she has some luck.

And if they come in low
and slow, and she's ready,

hopefully she gets something.

Oh, think quick.

Hunting in the bird
blind is kind of tough.

Even if we're wearing
all these perfect colors,

we can't move at all, really.

When they're coming in,
we got to stay still.

So, that's gonna be a
learning process for Simone
is not to try look at the

birds as they're coming in,

and only move when
you're ready to shoot.

It just takes a lot of
time and a lot of practice.

I want Simone to
get a few shots off,

even if she doesn't
get anything,

it's good for her to go
through that motion so she

gets more comfortable.

Just part of the learning
process is practicing.

At least we got a couple
of geese, huh, Simone?

SIMONE: Yeah.

RICKO: And hopefully
we have one that flies
over a little closer

and you get another chance.

Hopefully, get one to land,
that'd be the best way.

SIMONE: I know.

RICKO: It's just
a waiting game.

SUE: I'm one person
against the storm,

and I've got to beat the odds.

Nobody's here to help me.

I've got to beat those odds.

My eyes are like little
heat-seeking missiles,

looking for stuff
that's ruptured.

It's a pretty prominent storm.

Huge drifting going on.

Some of these drifts
are 18 feet tall,

some are six feet tall.

But I'm getting out and
getting my eyes on camp.

Is anything broken?

Is anything compromised?

Well, taking this
up off the ground.

You can see this
just got torn right off
the trailer and snapped.

So, I'll have to fix that.

But that means it's
getting inside the wall,

and potentially
the building there.

Every day no matter what on
the storms, I have to check.

Because after this storm,
I've got a very short reprieve.

I've got to fix
everything, because boom,

another one's coming in.

So, but I've only got
a short period of time,

so I got to keep looking.

The storm that I'm
going through right now,

the winds are ripping.

Minimum 30 mile an hour,

an upwards of 50 mile
an hour plus.

This storm is moving the snow.

I am 20 feet, 18 feet up in
the air with a snowdrift.

Seems like hours before
none of this was here.

This is now the bird's eye
view of my freezer tent that I

got my food out of.

And this is the roof of
the building next door,

and I'm four, five
feet taller than that.

Just in a matter
of hours of snow.

I am so grateful I
did it when I did.

But I got to keep looking.

I only get so many minutes
in these kinds of conditions,

so I wanna make
those minutes count.

I need to see what's going on
at the back of my gen shed.

I could see a lot
of snow built up.

So, I need to see if, "Is my
exhaust still free and clear?"

In a worst-case scenario,

something happens to my
generator and it blows,

that's it.

Let me go look.

Oh, (bleep), this is not good!

Oh, (bleep)!
This is not good.

I have to go back in the
other way and get a shovel.

My exhaust is
being compromised,

and it's gonna kill my gen.

I can tell that my generator's
not sounding right.

And surprise, surprise, my
exhaust pipe is being covered

with ice and snow.

What's going on is the wind
changing directions has built

up a big snowdrift around
the exhaust of my genie,

and that's not good.

It'll kill the genie.

Because the moisture
and ice will build up,

lower the temperature,
and allow ice to build
all the way inside.

So, I got to take it down.

I'm just getting pelted and
building up ice on my face.

The ice and slush
is building up as fast
as I'm taking it away.

So, this will now be probably
every hour or two hours chore.

You see all the
water coming off?

And I can feel my whole
face getting iced over.

Getting hard to see.

Yeah, I'm definitely
getting iced up.

Sometimes, you get
to where you can
barely coherently form words,

because your lips
and everything get
numb from the cold.

I've got chores now,

and those chores
are to keep coming out
every couple of hours,

digging out the exhaust
and checking for new problems.

It's just a domino effect,

and that's the way
these storms roll.

The wind has been volatile,
not just in strength,

but in direction.

I've got almost a week
left of this blow,

and it's not the worst that
Mother Nature's thrown at me.

But the consistency of it
just tears it apart like a
freaking basket of leaves.

AGNES: This is a real good,
healthy living when you live

and hunt and gather for
yourself and your children.

It just makes your family
closer, and more tighter,

and everybody's happy.

CAROL: I'm building
the wall of Kiwalik.

It is getting really
windy out, mom.

AGNES: We have some bad
weather coming here and
we're just preparing for it.

Chip's out getting
a load of wood,

so we don't have to go
look for wood and try to
get wood while it's stormy.

And now we just wanted
to make a little block
for the wind with snow,

so when it's real
windy we won't have
so much problems

with our tent and our tipi.

I'm just helping
the girls out.

And I'm getting
the girls some pieces
and chunks of snow here.

I'll just keep chopping
them some choice pieces
and they can just pick.

Sometimes chores
are a lot of fun.

You get to build things.

Look like we're done, huh?

CAROL: Looks nice
enough, built strong.

AGNES: Your dad.

Yeehee, I'm glad you
made it before dark.

We're done too before dark.

Our shelter's safe, and we
got a lot of wood to burn.

CHIP: Yeah.
AGNES: Thank you, honey.

CHIP: These girls sure
put stuff together, huh?

AGNES: Uh-hmm.

CHIP: Maybe the storm
will pass in a day or two,

maybe the storm
won't come at all.

You never know
what's gonna happen.

So as long as you keep
yourself topped off,

you got some extra
food on the side,

you got a couple of days
with warmth set aside,

you'll do just fine.

If we couldn't leave
this tent for a week,

I think we would be okay.

RICKO: Something
I wanna teach my
children is to be strong,

stand on your own.

It's sink or swim out here.

Learn to swim and
get on with life.

We got to set up these decoys.

There's two geese
down out here,

and we got to do
it kind of quick.

Because we don't
wanna scare any more
birds that might be coming in.

NARRATOR: In Huslia,
Ricko is teaching his daughter,

Simone, to hunt for geese.

After Simone missed
a few chances,

Ricko must try a different
tactic to help her harvest
a goose of her own.

RICKO: Try to go like this,
so that you get them up in the

air a little bit, so that
the birds flying over,

they could see them easier.

So, it'll be like that.

Basically, all you're doing
is just making a decoy.

These are specklebelly,
real fat geese.

Now that we got these
set up as decoys,

it'll help you get your shot,
because this will help bring

them in lower and closer.

They should be gliding
and moving slower, so.

SIMONE: Look.

RICKO: Your odds of
getting one will be higher.

We better get to the blind.

There's more coming in.

I think you'll be
good if they land.

I think that was how I
got my first two geese.

I was real good at calling
them, and they landed by me.

I was in a real good blind.

I shot one, had a single shot,
and I took the shell out,

put a new shell in there.

The other one was still
sitting there, shot that one.

I got two geese my
first time ever hunting.

It was a big moment for me.

SIMONE: How old were you?

RICKO: Maybe 14, I think.
Yeah, I was 14.

Got a couple of dead
decoys out here.

So, hopefully our luck
changes and we get some
to land real close,

and she gets
a chance to shoot.

Get your gun ready,
get your gun ready.

Grab your gun.
Take a shot.

(making bird call)

They're landing right there.

Two more specklebellies.

I think it's close enough
to take a shot, Simone.

And I think if you can
get a clear shot at his
head right here, you're good.

SIMONE: Yeah.
RICKO: It's all right.

You just got to
get used to it.

Used to shooting, so.

SIMONE: Yeah, I'm fine.

RICKO: Getting a bird
would've been a bonus,

but I'm happy that Simone is
operating a shotgun safely and

applying what we practiced,
and it takes a little time to

get comfortable and learn
to do it all smoothly,

and make it happen.

So, just got to
give her more time,

and practice makes perfect.

It's getting quiet
out here now.

The sun is starting
to go down.

It's starting to
get a little chilly,

so I think we can
call it a day.

SIMONE: Yeah.

RICKO: And I wanted
you to get a goose,

but that's how hunting is,
it's not always that you're

gonna catch something.

It was good to see you
handling the gun safely,

and real good to
see you going through
the motions of shooting.

So, I'm real happy
that you went out here
and you learned a lot.

And we'll keep trying.
You'll get one eventually.

Let's make a fire, cook up
the first goose of the season,

have a meal, and head home.

SIMONE: Yeah, sounds great.
RICKO: All right, let's do it.

GLENN: If you were to come
out here and just keep your

fingers crossed, and
hope nothing goes wrong,

you might be lucky,
but you never know.

Be prepared to
protect yourself.

This food looks so good.

After being out there
on the mountain all day,

I'll tell you, it's
gonna taste delicious.

TRISHA: Did you see much
while you were out there?

GLENN: Yeah, I was
climbing up there,

and I looked up ahead
through the trees,

and there was a bunch
of them right there on
the ridge up ahead of me.

But those caribou got away.

TRISHA: It's easier
on the lake, huh?

GLENN: Yeah, it's a lot
easier when they come
right out on the lake.

I just haven't seen any.

It's been almost a month,
I haven't seen a caribou
come out on the lake.

Whenever I'm here,
I have to be hunting,

and looking for caribou,
because we go through a lot of

meat, and the caribou
are unreliable.

Right now, we got
a little bit left,

but this isn't gonna last
as long as you'd think.

You can almost never have too
much meat out here on hand,

because sometimes you
go three or four months,

and nothing shows up.

And it's just the way
hunting goes, you know?

I mean, I go out there looking
for caribou ten times for

every time I come
home with one.

It's not like going
to the grocery store.

You don't have to
stock up quite as much,

because you know
you can go back to
the grocery store

and they'll have meat there.

But here, it's a
little different.

You got to stock up yourself
and make sure you got meat
on hand at all times.

Ready to go on mommy's back?

It's been a long day, huh?

Long day for me on the
mountain and a long day for

you down here at camp.

I'm ready for bed, too.

TRISHA: Time to sleep.

SUE: I am grateful for
the life that I lead.

Occasionally, I wonder
why it doesn't come with a
sand dune and a margarita,

but I love it.

I got a bit of a lull
in the storm right now.

It is still blowing, maybe
15 to 20 mile an hour winds.

While I've got the lull
I need to check my exhaust
on the generator again,

and see how
everything's shaping up.

Eyes on the ground on
everything all over again.

Let's see where we're at.

Oh, I don't know.

The exhaust has got a
little shell built over it,

and it's just important
to keep that clear.

If the exhaust can't get
out, it's gonna put the back

pressure on the generator,
and cause problems.

And right now, I'm calling
this a lull in the storm,

not that the storm is over by
any stretch of my imagination.

But I need to give
the next batch of
snow some place to build.

If I wanna have electricity,
if I wanna have communications,

and I wanna have a
working generator,
this has to be free.

I offer safety in
the winter, and fuel.

My fuel pumps now
run on electricity,

and I can't offer
those services if I
can't keep the lights on.

So, this is pretty
important stuff.

I don't have any DOT.

I don't have a Department
of Transportation that
comes out and tidies it for me.

I've taken that on myself.

But these are the
challenges I love.

I get something out of it.

Not sure why.

But I'm a challenge-driven
personality, and I dig
this stuff.

All right, it's not
the end of the world,

but if I don't keep
on top of it now,

it may be the end
of my little gen.

It's been my little
buddy for a long time,

I don't wanna do that.

So, glad I saw it.

Glad I found a way
to keep up with it.

Check it off the honey
Sue list and keep going.

RICKO: I feel like I
had a very great life,

but when it's all
said and done,

it's nothing if I don't
pass it on to my kids.

It's the first
goose of the season,

a real good eating bird.

They're real fat.

They're good for
another couple weeks.

SIMONE: Is that the heart?
RICKO: It's the gizzard.

SIMONE: Oh.

RICKO: Feels real
good to harvest the
first geese of the season.

And it also feels good to
get my daughter out here and

teach her the
proper ways of hunting.

She learned a lot,
she applied what
we were practicing,

and that's all I can ask for.

It's been a real
good day of hunting.

All it takes is knowledge
and a little hard work,

and you can get out
here and harvest it.

Have this thing
cooked up in no time.

It's gonna be good.

This goose is
about done, Simone.

It's looking delicious.

SIMONE: Yeah, it
looks really good.

RICKO: Yeah, it's
cooked real nice.

even though you're hungry.

RICKO: Does it?
SIMONE: Yeah.

having the drive to learn,

because if I wasn't
able to teach you,

I'm kind of
failing in my part.

They taught their children,

and I'm here
