- After the shooting, we got
evacuated from the concert.

My wife found out
that the shooter

came from the Mandalay Bay.

[sirens wailing]

And she borrowed a phone
and called the babysitter.

And we found out my son
Wake and our babysitter

had evacuated
the Mandalay Bay.

- Police! We're the police!
- Right there.

You got it?

- While we were
in the van leaving,

I leaned up to the driver,
and I said, "Sir,

can we please get my kid?"

[sirens wailing]

And when we pulled up
to the town square,

I could see
the babysitter and Wake.

I just got out
and just grabbed him.

My wife, she didn't let Wake
know anything was wrong,

but I could tell
she was tore up inside.

Really proud of the
way Jenna handled it.

A million pounds of pressure
just went off my shoulders

having-- holding my kid and
knowing he's not old enough

to remember any of this
and things could have

went south real quick.

We could have never
seen him again.

[making swishing noises]

Got my priorities
sitting in my lap, and...

I held him until
daylight that morning.

[tense music]

♪

[crickets chirping]

[car horns honking]

[sirens wailing]

- I wake up the next day
in the hospital.

I was in my own room, and
this was like the first time

that I was able to see what
was going on with the TV.

And I just see this
hotel and windows

are busted out of this room.

And the caption read,

"Country music festival
massacre.

58 dead."

[heart monitor beeping]

- Jonathan was shot
in the upper chest.

It was then revealed that he
had helped countless number

of people over a wall.

And then,
that's how he was shot.

♪

- Despite what the Hollywood
movies would have you believe,

the majority of the time,
we don't remove the bullets.

Generally, we can do some more
damage to the muscle tissue

going retrieving those
bullets where they lodge,

and people don't tend
to have adverse effects

from those bullets.

- All I'm hearing
in my head is like--

this fucking bullet
is not coming out.

[sirens wailing]

♪

- I had the hole in my neck.

They couldn't get
the bullet out,

so they ended up
stitching me up.

♪

I put my gear back on.

I ended up going back
to command post

where our rally
point was where all

the officers were showing up.

And that's where I actually
found my twin brother.

He was a sergeant at the time.

He was in charge
of writing the names

down for injured officers.

So he had to write his own
brother's name on the board.

And I just can't
even imagine what he felt

going through that.

I walked into the
conference room, saw him,

and it got real quiet.

I mean, I'm, obviously, kind
of bloody from my uniform.

So everybody kind
of gave us a moment.

♪

He knew I was OK and
that I knew he was OK.

It's a lot to take in.

- We didn't see Carrie until
she was in the funeral home.

The coroner, they were dealing
with a lot of casualties.

- I saw her, but I broke
down so bad it just--

it was heartbreaking.

- I just kept hugging her.

I would have stayed
there forever.

But you know, you can't.

And they were going
to cremate her.

And director called,
and she said,

we're going to do
it in ten minutes.

And I just thought,
they're going to cremate

my daughter in ten minutes.

And I just-- I don't know.

How do you deal with that?

♪

[sirens wailing]

- I went home At 10:00 p.m.
the next night.

At the time, my daughter was
just a couple of months old.

So I went into her
nursery room and sat down.

That's probably when it hit me.

Just, you know, sadness.

Other people's sons and
daughters that didn't make it.

♪

- When I walked
through my door,

I was sobbing at that point.

After that night, I quit.

I loved working bedside.

I love being a nurse,
but I just couldn't work

in the ER anymore.

- Shot dead.

- I remember just
turning on the TV

and trying to make sense of
what I just went through.

- Our thoughts and
prayers are with all

those families and our thanks
that they spoke with us today.

[phone buzzes]

- And tell myself
that it wasn't a dream.

That it actually
truly did happen.

♪

- You have the
biggest mass shooting

in the history of our country

and no information on it.

What the fuck was
this guy doing?

What was it all for?

♪

- There was a vacuum.

There was a void
of information.

And whenever there's a vacuum
or void, people will step in.

- ISIS immediately
taking credit for--

- You had conspiracy theories
from every different angle.

This lone offender-type
terrorism.

Your Sandy Hook,
your El Paso, your Parkland.

They were acting on their own.

There is no
demographic profile.

And they often had
multiple motivating drivers

to making that
decision that violence

is necessary and justified
to solve their problems.

♪

So we interviewed pretty
much every last person

that had any
meaningful contact

with the shooter from birth
till his death.

- From his associates,
his friends, his family,

phone records, social media,

we started peeling
back the layers.

♪

He'd been retired
from a few jobs.

He liked to gamble.

He was in the casinos a lot.

He was a 64-year-old
video poker player.

That was his full-time job.

And he was kind of a recluse.

He seemed to not really get
along with people very well.

September 17th, he had checked
into the Ogden condominium

in Las Vegas, where it
was another live concert,

the Life is Beautiful concert.

He went in with
the same luggage

that eventually transitioned
into the Mandalay.

He was in a high-rise
hotel looking down

at a large outdoor gathering.

[cheers and applause]

Maybe he was casing that place
as well for the same thing

and chose not to
and went to the Mandalay.

♪

Some information on
a potential name--

possibly related
with the suspect.

It is a platinum player's card.

[radio chatter]

- We identified the
shooter's girlfriend.

She was out of the country.

- She's in the Philippines.

She voluntarily changed her
flights to come back early.

♪

In speaking with her,
she was absolutely

devastated that this occurred.

- She lived with the shooter.

She had extensive
interaction with him.

Then question is, how
could someone that was

close to the shooter not know?

♪

- The year previous
to the attack,

she said that he
had become very cold

and his personality
had changed.

♪

- A year out,
there was a big increase

in the purchases of firearms.

But she said it just
wasn't something

that they talked about.

- It struck her as odd
but didn't

really want to rock that boat.

He was taking care of her,
and she didn't have

any sort of finances
to fall back on

or a career to fall back on.

- He was systematically
buying new guns

and modifying them
so methodically while even,

essentially
living a normal life.

They get a search warrant for
his house that they execute.

- The shooter had a section
of the garage to himself.

A lot of those firearms
were stored in the garage.

- Our investigation determined
that we don't believe

the girlfriend was involved.

She has some, obviously,
guilt over not maybe

recognizing some of
the traits and factors

that she saw in him.

But to indicate that my
boyfriend's kind of weird,

he's depressed a lot,
he's got emotional problems,

and he owns a lot of
guns, that's not a crime.

We did some other interviews
with other family members

in the initial stages
of the investigation.

One of the brothers added some
insight into the

shooter's personality.

- We grew up poor on the side
of the freeway

in the San Fernando Valley
in California.

My mom was born
in the Depression,

and she's had a tough life.

Her husband was an [...]hole.

A total [...]hole.

He ran off.

Left her with four kids.

- He was always
the controlling brother.

He's seven years older
than us and raised us,

took care of us.

He was the father.

♪

He was the one always punishing
us for being the bad ones.

In his mind,
the whole world was his.

♪

I have to presume
what happened was--

was pain in the loss
of a lot of things.

The loss of the ability
to control everything.

- He was losing money
over time and losing

some of the comps associated
with being a high roller

and some of that ability
to live the lifestyle.

We found on his hard drives
searches related to how

to become a social media star.

The attack was certainly done
in a way that would likely

gather from the media
significant attention

to achieve some
degree of infamy.

The shooter's father was
an FBI wanted fugitive

and a bank robber

who indicated
psychopathic tendencies.

We certainly believe that had
some influence on what legacy

the shooter wanted to
leave after he was gone.

♪

- People have a hard
time believing that such

a spectacular
large-scale event can

be conducted
by such a inadequate,

seemingly normal person.

The guy legally owned guns.

He didn't break
the law until he

pulled the trigger
in that room,

that very first
shot that he fired.

♪

I don't know that
there's anything that law

enforcement could have done.

It shows how simple
it is to conduct one

of the most heinous
acts in the worst

mass shooting in U.S. history.

That's the concerning part
to me that

if one person can do it,

that means somebody
else can, too.

- My fellow Americans,
we are joined together today

in sadness, shock, and grief.

- The Vegas massacre
has touched off

a polarizing debate
about guns and violence.

- Last night,
more than 58 people

were tragically murdered.

- Moments of silence and
sympathies and prayers

is not enough anymore.

- People promoting
greater gun control.

They don't believe
in the Second Amendment.

- Maybe he shouldn't have
been able to buy 40 guns.

- That's not written
into the Second Amendment

that you can buy any weapon
at any time with any magazine

clip size anywhere.

- 99.99% of gun owners
are not buying guns to go

use them in crimes like this.
- Right.

- This country has
the loosest set

of gun laws allowing
dangerous people

to own dangerous weapons.

- I mean,
the outrage they're trying

to stir against
the NRA they ought

to be studying against
the mental health system.

- This must stop,
and it must stop now.

- An investigation revealed
the gunman used bump stocks

to basically allow a
shooter to fire consistently

in rapid succession.

[rapid gunfire]

- I knew that that was the
last thing Carrie heard was

that bam, bam, bam, bam, bam.

It was driving me crazy.

♪

- We got this from
the FBI reports

and the police reports.

He had 16 to 18 assault
weapons,

most of them had 100 rounds,
and they had a bump stock.

And so he would discriminately
just-- pushes the button

and 100 rounds goes off and--

- He just mows everybody down.
- --60 seconds, yeah.

- He just literally
mows everybody down.

We decided to go
down to Olympia

and testify against
the bump stocks.

- We've spoken in the
Washington state House

and Senate, and I think we were
really helpful in getting

bump stocks banned.

- Today the
Department of Justice

clarified that bump stock-type
devices are machine guns

and are prohibited
by federal law.

- A Fort Worth-based
bump stock manufacturer

handed over its entire
inventory to the government

to be destroyed.

- Truckloads of the rifle
accessory were crushed.

As of today, it's illegal
to own a bump stock.

- But the problem is
past the bump stocks.

The guns are designed
to be devastating.

And they're supposed to
be used by the military

to do maximum damage
to the soldiers

that they're fighting.

[gunshot]

- Why do you need
an assault weapon?

That's really for war.

Why do you need more than
ten rounds of ammunition?

- Hi, Carrie.

- Hi.

- And I think Carrie
would have said, "Dad,

you can't let this continue."

- And I said, honestly,
I know it sounds impossible,

but I would like to go
after the gun manufacturers.

The gun manufacturers
knowingly created

a weapon that was modifiable
and advertised it as such.

And then, we just decided,
well, so then we'll sue.

♪

- There are many ways
to modify an AR-15.

It's the DNA of the weapon
that allows for automatic fire.

- You can buy these
pieces online.

So it's not hard to illegally
make an automatic firearm

out of a legal firearm.

[rapid gunfire]

- I've always been a
pro-Second Amendment guy.

People still need to have--

have a right to
protect their freedoms

and protect their
home and their family.

- I'm not any less
pro-Second Amendment.

There is a mental
health crisis,

and we've strayed
away from firearm

education and responsibility
to demonization

and us versus them.

- Those instruments are not
the cause of why people snap.

Whether it's a firearm,
a knife, a vehicle, a bomb,

or whatever the case is,
it's going

to continue until society
behaves and respects

each other's boundaries.

- I grew up hunting and
owned assault rifles

and thought that they
were fun to shoot.

But really, seeing this,
it's changed

my thoughts on gun control.

- [screaming]

- Hi.

- Hi, Carrie.

- Hi, Dad.

I'm going to go
roller skate, OK?

- OK.

We're not against guns, per
se, or the Second Amendment.

What we have an
issue with is why

anyone needs an assault weapon
or a high-capacity magazine.

Well, if you just carve
those two things out,

I believe our daughter
would be alive today.

Unfortunately,
you are not allowed

to sue a gun manufacturer.

- The lawsuit took a long time.

And what stopped it was
the laws that protect

the gun companies,
the Protection of Lawful

Commerce in Arms Act.

- The 2005 law protects
the manufacturers

against lawsuits
when their product

is used for criminal purposes.

- You're still going
to have mass shootings,

but they could
have been reduced.

And all the poor
victims' families

like us who are living with
it; we lost our daughter.

And we're trying to
make it so other people

don't lose their children.

- It is now the deadliest mass
shooting in American history.

- More than 850
people were injured.

58 people were killed.

♪

- It was on the news for a few
days, and then it faded away.

And then, it moved
on to the next story.

[birds chirping]

[somber music]

♪

- 58 people lost their lives.

♪

Until the day I die,
I will make sure that

our 58 angels
will never be forgotten.

♪

And I'm never mentioning
the shooter's name,

because I'm not going to
give him the satisfaction

to know that he won.

♪

By the media saying their
name day in and day out

and posting their pictures
and still talking about them,

you're giving them clout when
they don't deserve it at all.

- Officials have confirmed...

- We now know his name.

- Authorities have also
identified the shooter as--

- The suspect,
he is identified as--

- Identifying him as--
- The gunman, now identified

by a law enforcement source
as--

- Police today confirmed
the shooter was--

- The shooter,
now identified as--

- What we're seeing
research wise is that,

essentially, people are
trying to one up everyone else

now with the body count that
they have for mass shootings.

Law enforcement and
the media has also

realized that saying
the subject's name

has exacerbated that problem.

- He has been identified.

He is a local resident.

I will not release
his name at this time.

- Screw the guy
up in the window.

The story to me wasn't
about the guy whose

name I will never mention.

It wasn't about him.

It wasn't about a shooter.

It was about how people
can heal together as one.

♪

- I want people to know
the faces of the people

we lost that night.

♪

- One thing I've learned
through the years

since the shooting
and watching

the healing process from so

many different perspectives,
from the artists,

from the fans,
from law enforcement,

there is no right
or wrong way to process this.

♪

- The days and weeks
after were really hard.

♪

I remember having
horrible nightmares

and not being able to sleep.

I was very afraid of life
and the outside world

and leaving my apartment.

I didn't want to be alone.

♪

And the hard thing was someone
will say, what happened?

Tell me about it.

And when I start
to get into the details,

I'm scaring people.

And I don't need other people
to have nightmares, too.

I just never talked
about it again.

♪

- It became extremely
emotional

thinking back on the people
that I saw expire.

Thinking about my daughter
and how very easily

it could have been her.

I was a very angry man.

Very angry.

♪

- I didn't know what PTSD
was until after Vegas.

I wasn't sleeping at night.

I would have anxiety attacks.

I don't even want to
send my kids to school.

As if like somebody
is going to get

mad and just be able
to walk onto campus

and start shooting.

I've struggled with
my issues with suicide.

The isolation
and feeling alone.

I was so vulnerable.

I wouldn't talk to
anybody about anything,

because I didn't want to
put my burden on anybody.

♪

- I had a lot
of mental trauma.

Where I lived,
it is fairly dark and minimal

ambient lighting.

And I remember opening the
sliding glass door to let

the dog out the backyard.

I looked back up, and the
shooter is in my backyard,

and he's looking right at me.

♪

- It's this little gnawing
memory or a haunting feeling

that just won't let go.

And everybody's is different,
and mine

is the girl in the red shorts.

I only saw the back of her.

She was kind of
curled up not moving,

and I was heading
her direction.

And then somebody
pulled me another direction,

and I never got to
go check on her.

Maybe I could have
saved her, you know.

And the survivor guilt just
comes from being alive.

It comes from being alive.

It comes from wishing
you could have done more.

♪

- You think about, what could
I had done different?

Play a much better-- bigger
role than what we had.

You know, we--

I--

[sighs]

♪

- There's no going back.

There's no undoing it.

Whether it was a mother,
a sister, a brother, a son.

People lost people that night,
and you

don't just forget that.

Knowing that one person was
the ultimate cause of that.

Until he was done shooting,
there

was no way you were
going to breach that door

and live through it.

♪

But I would have went
through that door;

there's no question.

I mean, and again,
don't get me wrong.

Because I'm not passing
judgment on anybody.

But...

to this day,
five years later,

that's my single
biggest regret.

I should have been there.

♪

- One of my officers was
off duty attending the concert

and lost his life.

- We're here to remember
and honor a fallen hero,

Officer Charleston Hartfield.

- March.

♪

- It hardens you.

It makes you callous.

There's something
about being a cop.

We are very, very,
very good at burying things.

We just shut it down.

As police officers, that's
probably one of the most

detrimental things that we do.

♪

- So if you don't talk
about this stuff

and if you don't get the
stuff out of you, it's toxic.

My life got leveled
over the last few years.

Marriage went away,
and everything

has been leveled in my life.

I didn't know if there was
going to be a way out for me.

But ironically,
I had to lose everything.

I, basically, had to
let go of the old Dean

and embrace the new Dean,
and...

- They're asking me to look.

- One of the things that's
helped me survive

and get through this--

I got that phone call.

It was Natalia's dad.

And his first words were,
"You saved my daughter's life."

♪

All I could say was,
"Thank you

for giving me some good news."

And I'll say it to
my dying breath,

I mean, as much as Natalia
feels that I saved her,

she saved me that night, too.

[gentle guitar music]

Now, we need to get back
to being human beings.

And I think that's what
country music talks about.

- ♪ Just a memory, a piece
of me that meant everything ♪

♪ Just things

♪

- I was feeling like I took a
bunch of losses on that night.

I assumed that the guy
that got shot in the neck

that I was trying
to care for,

he just wasn't
going to make it.

It was maybe two days after
the incident,

somebody forwarded me
a story about this guy

that got shot
in the neck who was

saved by an off-duty officer.

I clicked the link,
and it's his face.

And I immediately
recognized him.

And I just stood there stunned
looking at my phone kind of

just wondering
what alternate universe

I was living in.

- ♪ When does a phoenix
learn how to fly? ♪

♪ Do I get my wings
when I stop asking why? ♪

♪ How do I start moving on
and moving past ♪

♪ Stop holding on,
looking back ♪

♪ When God's hellbent
on making me a fighter ♪

♪ Forged in the fire

♪ Oh, oh, ooh

- So he calls me, and
the first words that he says

is, "Oh my fucking God,
I can relax now."

♪

- I felt validated that
I made the right choice

or I did something
good that night.

And I was happy.

- ♪ Seven pairs of hands

♪ It took searching
for something more ♪

♪ For me to understand

♪ That anything
and everything ♪

♪ Even the kitchen sink
it's just things ♪

- He invites me out for
his wife's birthday party.

We just kind of just
like started crying.

Just embracing each other.

I truly felt like a lot of
emotions going on at that time

because I'm like, this guy
literally just saved my life.

- ♪ Forged in the fire,
oh, oh, ooh ♪

- From that moment on, the
bond between me and Tommy

was like inseparable.

- ♪ Will I last
or will I tire? ♪

♪ Can broken be beautiful
again? ♪

- I basically just Googled
"breast cancer survivor

shot in Vegas,"
and she popped up.

And it was her
name and her face.

It was just a biggest sigh of
relief that she had made it.

- Strangers that night that
stepped in and helped me

have now become
a part of my life.

How do you ever thank
anybody that saves your life?

There's never enough words.

♪

- Natalie,

she likes to tell people
that I saved her life

and that I'm her hero.

I struggle with that word.

I left that night feeling
very alone in my experience.

So in ways, having that
connection to Natalie

has saved me a lot, too.

11 minutes seems so short.

But the lengths that we've come
from that experience is like--

you just couldn't
trade it for the world.

♪

- Here I am still
having surgeries

or complications from the
surgeries and complications

from the shooting.

That makes or breaks people.

And I've chosen to
not let it break me.

♪

I survived cancer.

I get shot during the largest
shooting in the history

of the United States.

But life isn't this scorecard.

♪

I'm here to stay.

I'm here to fight.

I'm here to do what
I need to survive.

And it impacts people,
I think, to hear that.

And maybe, it ignites some
kind of feeling in them

knowing how precious life is.

You really have to dig deeper
to focus on what's important

and who you are as a core.

These life circumstances happen
that we have no choice over,

no control over.

And it's what we do with that
that remains our only choice.

- My sister,
she got out of the hospital.

And all she could focus on--
she was like,

I'm going to homecoming.

both: Go.

Go, Faith, go.

- So we dressed up,
we got ready.

It was, honestly, the best
time in my entire life.

- ♪ When does a phoenix

♪ Do I get my wing

- I didn't want to miss it,
even though I'm very tired

and hurting, but I just wanted
to show that

we're stronger than
we actually think we are.

♪

- It was an amazing night.

Watched the football game
and had fun with our friends

and laughed and giggled.

And it just felt
like old times.

Celebrating that we
were alive.

[together]
We love you, Bacas!

- ♪ Hellbent on making me
a fighter ♪

- I kept what I promised
her in the back of that car.

I had flew down there
and surprised her

and got to see her walk.

And that was one of the most
special moments of my life.

♪

I got the matching tattoo
that they have.

It was like we're
a family for 100 years.

There's definitely
a soul connection

I'm sure we'll have forever.

- Parker definitely
100% saved my life.

I tell him that all the time.

Like you're my hero.

You saved my life.

I don't know what
I'd do without you.

- ♪ Do I get my wings?

- October 1, definitely
had that extra push to go,

OK, I know
what I need to do,

to work for law enforcement.

The day I became a police
officer was May 20, 2020.

I was lucky enough to have my
father pin my badge onto me.

I want to help people, right?

So what's a better
career to help

people other than becoming
any type of first responder?

- It's hard not to
feel a little guilty.

I mean, those people were
there to see our show.

And they wouldn't be in
that situation had they not

been out there supporting us.

We got to go meet the victims.

Told them how sorry I was.

Apologized for everything they
were having to go through.

Just being there, listening,
and letting them

know that you just care.

We were almost like
each other's therapists.

Being able to talk about
it amongst ourselves

was therapeutic for all of us.

The week that followed,
I got a call

from my manager that said

that Lorne Michaels
from "Saturday Night Live"

wanted us to come do the show.

This week, we witnessed
one of the worst

tragedies in American history.

Like everyone,
I'm struggling to understand

what happened that night

and how to pick up the
pieces and start to heal.

But you can be sure
that we're going

to walk through these
tough times together

every step of the way.

The anxiety and fear of
something happening that

followed the shooting, it's
just not a way to live, man.

And so I was ready to get
back out there with my guys

and get on stage.

At that point,
"I Won't Back down"

channeled everything we felt
about the healing process.

- ♪ In a world that keeps on
pushing me around ♪

♪ Gonna stand my ground

♪ And I won't back down

♪ No we won't back down

[cheers and applause]

- I had a ton of
hesitation before

I took Wake out to another
festival-- to another show.

Part of me was
just like, you know what?

I fought my whole life
to be able to do this.

I'll be damned if I
let one guy beat me.

Y'all say hello
to my boy Wake.

- No matter what city
in the world we go to,

there's somebody out in front
of us with a Route 91 shirt on.

- Music has kind of helped
me through the process.

And so we had a lot of
support from the industry

and artists and fans.

All I knew is that I
had my band and crew

and that I had to get
those guys back on track.

Some of my guys had a
really hard time with it.

So we had counselors come
out for anybody that

wanted them
for the rest of the tour.

Our first show was in Oklahoma.

And that show was like
pretty bare bones for us.

Half our gear was still
on the stage in Las Vegas.

- Thank you all so
much, Tulsa, Oklahoma,

for being here tonight.

We appreciate it.

I think the one
thing that's probably

going to help us
more than anything

is play for you guys tonight.

So thank you all so much.

- We go play a show anywhere,
and you see

a Route 91 family
in the house.

Obviously, a lot of people
are still struggling with it.

And so we continue to support
the survivors of Route 91

as much as possible.

Part of the healing process
was, with each show,

it got better and better and
better to the point of like--

when we looked out and saw
this survivor of Route 91

being lifted up
in a wheelchair,

it was this cool symbolic
thing of like unity

amongst the Route 91 family.

They just didn't know
how to process it.

None of my family members
knew what I was going through.

But slowly but surely,
I started

getting a little bit more
comfortable and going places.

And there was this
Route 91 survivors event.

♪

I'm nervous because like now,
I'm like-- these are people

that I don't know.

♪

But I kind of do know them.

- You made it!
- You made it!

- Hi, guys.

- Right now we want to welcome
all of y'all to this reunion.

We are Vegas strong,
Route 91 strong.

Celebrating family,
loved ones, and country music.

- I didn't realize like how
much my face got around.

Because the moment
that I walked in

they came up to me, and they
just started giving me hugs.

♪

- From that moment on--

You get used to
it after a while.

There was like a spark in me.

And I started calling
them my Route 91 family.

It got bad to the point...

- It's a blessing.

I'm not alone anymore.

They are my rock.

This is to family.

No matter what, we've always
been there for each other

until, hey, the last
one of us is gone.

Hey, family.
- Cheers.

[all shouting]

It kind of opened my eyes.

It made me realize
we kind of

forgot
like how to treat each other.

- The shooter, he came
from a broken family,

abusive parents.

This is a child who
was angry and lonely.

Filled with trauma.

Took it out on us.

We got to go to the core--

the root cause
of these problems.

What happened out on
that field that night.

The only way to really heal
is to make sure that we

take care of each other.

- Back in my day,
they'd just say, suck it up

and go back to work.

We don't do that anymore.

And this event taught
me a lot about that.

Taught me how to be there for
other people in their moment,

not in mine

and to trust every
emotion that's coming

out of their head as real.

- I will not let this
crazy son of a bitch

affect me in a negative way.

I am not looking
at what this guy did.

I'm looking at what
the hundreds of heroes

did that night,

people risking their
lives for other people.

- That night,
one person showed evil.

And since then, hundreds of
thousands have shown kindness.

And to me, that's where
I want the focus to be

and where I want to be
trusting other people

to be good people.

- Outside of law enforcement
and first responders,

there were people in those
crowds that saved lives

because they stood
up at that moment

and they did what needed
to be done at that time

to take care of the people
on their left and right.

Those stories should be told.

- For a while, you could
feel like the country

being your support system.

And you know, I thought that
things were going to change.

I honestly did after this.

You wonder how many victims
there have to be in order

for laws to be changed.

- Being able to feel like you
were there through the telling

of the story,
maybe that helps down

the line of just
a better understanding

of what people did go through,

what their loved ones
went through being there.

And hopefully,
people who weren't there

soak it in and absorb it
and try to make sure

that it doesn't happen again.

- Until you've been touched,
as we've been touched,

you don't understand it.

Once it happens to your
family, all of a sudden,

ah, now I got it.

Your life is forever changed.

- Just imagine that this
could happen to you.
