- We were getting calls
of active shooters

at various strip properties.

We were getting calls of
active shooters at the airport.

- OK, OK.

- If you looked to your right,
you looked to your left,

you saw people that had
half their face blown off.

- I'm immediately on the radio
calling for more resources,

realizing this is
the real thing.

This is the nightmare
coming true,

and now--now we're
going to live it.

- Community ambulance
had 21 people on site.

You know, it's not like
we were responding to it.

We were there.

- There was ambulances
taking 9, 10 people.

[siren wailing]

My EMTs are my kids' age.

I don't know how
I would have lived myself

if a decision I made cost one
of my people their lives.

That--that's just--that would
have sent me over the edge.

But I had to make all those
decisions

because hundreds
of people needed help.

- We never actually made
it into the event itself.

- On the outside,
we had too many patients

that were injured.

It felt like 50,
60 people on each side.

They were on the ground
crying.

- Every shot--
Maybe, I don't know.

We were separated.
- OK.

Listen, there's a whole bunch--

- People started banging
on our ambulances.

- Let's go!

- We were told to grab
as many people as we could.

We did just that.

- When I pulled up
to the hospital,

that was a sight that I'll
probably never forget.

There's a saying
in medicine, you know,

before you go to a code
is to take your own pulse.

You know, try to control your
emotions, and think properly,

clear your head.

- As I pulled in, I could
see the trauma bays

like a sea of
red and blue lights

from all the
emergency vehicles,

and the probably first 20,
30 patients had already hit.

- You have injuries?
You have injuries?

- It was 10:00
in the evening,

so most of the people
that responded, you know,

had their phones still on.

By midnight,
we had 100 physicians

and 200 nurses and
ancillary staff

at Sunrise Hospital
caring for victims.

- Most busy trauma centers
probably see anywhere

from 2 to 10 in a night.

For us, average is probably 3.

Over the next two hours,
we got 240.

- We're used to taking care
of the sickest of the sick.

But that high of volume,
that's unprecedented.

- In that ambulance, there
was a guy with a head wound,

and another girl with
a bullet in her thigh.

[sirens wailing]

The ambulance ride
was such a relief.

I was so proud of Carrie
and proud of myself

that we were able to
get to an ambulance.

We got out of there.

We're gonna get to a hospital
and Carrie was going to be OK.

- But right as we were
pulling into the hospital,

I knew she had
lost consciousness

because she closed her eyes.

- Go, go, go, go, go! Go.

- I see the hospital
coming into view.

We're slowing down.
We're almost there.

And this guy was like,
"You're OK, Natalie.

"We're gonna get through this.

This hang in there, Natalie."

Then they took me out of the
ambulance and to a trauma bay,

and there was lots of crying
and screaming going around me.

- And they gave everybody
the last name Trauma

because not everybody
could say their name

or identify themselves.

So they entered me
as Natalie Trauma.

- The next thing I know,
they're pulling me

out of the ambulance, and we're
going inside of a hospital.

And I just remember,
like, we're

going through this crowd.

And I see people on
both sides of me,

and it's pure pandemonium.

- Let's go. Let's go.
Let's go!

- They put me on a stretcher,
and all you just heard

was screams,
there's screams everywhere.

I look down. There's blood
streaks everywhere.

And then I just kinda
just closed my eyes,

and I was just thinking
about my sister.

It felt kind of like a movie,

where you go into the doors,
and the floors

aren't white anymore.

They're just covered in blood.

- I asked her,
please close your eyes.

She's a 17-year-old girl.

She does not need to
see any more trauma.

And the thing about
trauma is once you see it,

you can't unsee it.

- I got a GSW over here.
- You grab onto me.

- Dean was checking my pulse,
and he was telling everyone,

"We need to hurry up because
we don't have

a lot of time with her."

He rolled me all
the way to the ER.

And said,
"I am gonna leave now.

I have to go
help other people."

- My training is I gotta
hand off a patient

to an equal or a higher power.

You gotta trust in
the person that you're

handing them off to.

I told Natalia, I said,
"You're gonna be OK.

You're in great hands,"
and went out,

and started setting up triage.

We had a bunch of
rigs coming in.

- And at that point, I was
just like, I'm here alone.

Nurses just kept running up to
you, writing on your forehead,

saying, like, your name, your
address, where you live,

and how old are you?

And I felt like I was dozing
in and out of consciousness.

It was a choice either to
keep going or to just give up.

But something was just
telling me to look up.

I did feel that intuition.

It was much stronger
than I've ever experienced.

And at that moment,
I saw my sister.

I don't know what it was,
but it was some calling.

And I just felt like
something was telling

me to just open my eyes.

Open my eyes and
look to the left.

I just saw this girl.

Her head was down, and I
just had, like, a realization.

I was like, that is my sister.

Through the dark days
and the happy days,

we're always together.

That was the only
thing keeping me going.

- They told me that my
airway was compromised,

and my airway was
starting to close,

and that they needed to
intubate me immediately.

The bullet completely
obliterated my left jawbone.

It fractured my chin in half.

I lost a third of
my blood supply.

I needed an emergency
blood transfusion.

I just kept thinking
about Jason,

and hoping that he'd be there.

And that's kind of
the last thing I remember.

- I woke up in this hallway.

I could feel the hustle
and the bustle of chaos

going around me--
the nurses running by,

people screaming
and crying in the background.

And I couldn't move.

I could barely
keep my eyes open,

and now I realized I
couldn't even move a finger.

I didn't know if I was
in a coma,

if I was hurt worse
than I realized.

I didn't understand why I was
paralyzed all of a sudden.

A whole other level of
trauma hit me in that moment.

- We pulled up to, like, this
X-ray room, the CT room.

And I just hear
the dude say, "Fuck."

I'm just staring up at
the ceiling of lights.

I'm trying to hold on
more so for my kids,

because I couldn't
imagine myself not being there

for my kids anymore.

It gave me that
fighting chance.

And that was the first
time that I actually

heard, like,
what was going on.

The nurse, she was
like, yeah, somebody's

shooting from Mandalay.

And in my head, the only
thing I could think of

was I hope they
fuckin' kill him.

[tense music]

- Metro police!
- Metro police!

- Metro, Metro, Metro!

- Think about when you were a
kid playing hide and go seek.

When you were the one hiding,

you always knew
where the one searching was.

Well, it's the same way when
you're searching for a suspect

that's hiding with a gun.

They know where you're at, and
you don't know where they are.

So it's an extremely
dangerous situation.

- We knew there was a lot
of officers converging

on that area at once.

I wanted to let them know
that we were opening the door

to the stairwell and
they didn't mistake us

for a suspect,
and we didn't have

a blue on blue type situation.

- I'm hearing on
the radio the chaos.

[radio chatter]

- I'm trying to
get on the radio,

"Hey, this is where we're at.
I don't want to blue on blue.

"We're coming out
onto the floor.

- We verbalized it on the radio
and verbalized it out loud,

as we were opening
the door, to stay away

from the friendly fire.

- Metro, Metro, Metro,
Metro, Metro, Metro!

OK, yep.

- And that's when I was
met with Captain Biscoe.

- When we open the door and I
see Levi, Levi is someone

I've known for years,
my whole career,

also known his capabilities,
because we trained together,

we went to SWAT operator
school together.

And I know how he
responds under pressure.

He knows how I respond
under pressure.

And he tells me, "I know how
to get to the suspect's room."

- We go down
to the 31st floor.

- Come across,
down the hallway.

- And then go up to where
he knows there's a door that

will lead right in front
of the suspect's room

on the 32nd floor.

- As we start to get up to the
landing on that 32nd floor,

I was given some instruction
to start removing

the lights in the stairwell.

At the top of that landing,
you have a door

that goes out into the
hallway of the 32nd floor.

- As we open that door,

we could see
a room service cart

that was directly
across the hall.

And immediately,
I recognized that there

was some cables running off
of the room service cart

and down underneath
the door of room 32-134.

First reaction
was that it may be

some type of improvised
explosive device

that would have some
type of remote switch.

But we didn't
have time to wait.

- I remember making
the decision,

hey, we need to go on this.

We have to get
through the door,

and force entry into the room.

- Back, back, back,
back, back, back, back.

- Guys, right here.
Right there.

- I started pulling the
explosive charge off my vest

and getting it ready to go.

[whispering]

- We step out
into the hallway.

K9 officer Newton
has a ballistic shield

that he holds
towards the door,

while Officer Hancock hangs
a breach on the doors.

I step over, and as I
get close to the cart--

- I reached down
and just flipped

the camera away from us,
very concerned

it was gonna explode.

- A lot of things run
through your mind

when you're up
in front of a door

placing an explosive breech.

Get that charge placed
as quickly as possible,

and then pull back to that
safe position that we had.

- This situation was probably
the highest level of intensity

that I've ever been in.

If you look at active shooters,
traditionally,

most of 'em
don't give up.

Most of them get in a gun
battle with law enforcement.

- Every officer
in that stack felt

that they were going
into a gunfight.

So I know I'm
going into danger.

But knowing that we're
going into a situation

and that you may die,
well, you just

want to not make it in vain.

I had more concerns
with failure and getting

my team killed, but--

At the same time,
we need to do this,

and I need to do this now.

And I know that
if I am expressing fear,

my team is gonna express fear.

[explosion booms]

- The breach was very loud.

It sets off an alarm
like a smoke alarm.

[siren wailing]

I remember feeling a little bit
of like a breeze at night.

- Just an overwhelming
smell of gunpowder

was coming through
the room, and now

funneling down that hallway.

Because a window
on the exterior of the room

had been breached.

- It's dark in the room
as we're looking in.

Here, we have to go into
this tight quarters,

this small room,
and search for a suspect

that could be hiding anywhere.

- And from our area,
I can see now

on the ground there was a
rifle with a scope on a bipod.

We knew it was
an automatic rifle.

- I could immediately
see guns laying all over

on the inside of that room.

With the amount
of firepower,

I'm thinking multiple suspects.

- I peel off with one
of the SWAT officers

to the left,
clearing the bedroom.

Levi and a couple of
officers go to the right.

It's dark.
There's smoke.

It's windy in there.

And as we get through,

there's what
we believe to be a suspect

deceased on the ground.

He was dead.

- It looked like he had a
self-inflicted gunshot wound.

And I remember
just kind of taking

a step back feeling like it
was a shift back in our favor.

- When we heard
the suspect was down,

there was a lot of emotions.

There was a sense of
relief in that room.

But the information
at our dispatch

was that there were
multiple shooters.

- We breached that second door
to clear out

the second room...
[explosion booms]

not knowing if there's
multiple suspects

what we're walking into.

- We clear both rooms.

There was only one suspect.

[radio chatter]

- As I look around
the room,

there's broken glass
on the ground.

I'm stepping over weapons.

I remember seeing bags
of magazines

for the different rifles
loaded.

I remember looking out the
window he was looking at,

and being shocked at
how there was nowhere

for anybody to
hide based on where

he had chosen this position.

But I do remember thinking
about the complexity

and the preparation
that went into it.

I've never seen anything
even close to like this.

Generally, what you're
trained on active shooters

is a white male adult
in military garb.

But when I look at
the suspect on the ground,

I remember thinking, you know,
that's not what I expected.

[siren wailing]

- We determined there was
a shooter on the 32nd floor

of the Mandalay Bay.

He is dead.

Now we're bringing in all
the resources of the FBI

to assist us in
this investigation.

- Information
was passed to us,

one shooter,
deceased in the room.

And once you have a name, the
focus is to try to determine,

is there a danger
out there somewhere else

that we're not aware of.

There's 24 firearms positioned
all throughout the room,

almost in a strategic way.

So you kind of have
to ask, why would one person

need so many guns?

What other potential
threats were out there?

There was some indications
that Vegas could

be a potential target,
just based on

on some overt messaging coming
from terrorist organizations.

It's Sin City.
It's kind of what

some of these extremist groups
might want to attack.

The natural thought
is to think,

is this a terrorist attack?

- You know, we all
watched in horror

as the plane crashes
into the North Tower

of the World Trade Center.

- And then a few minutes,
you know, later,

you know, here
comes another plane

into the South Tower.

Are we gonna experience
something like that,

and was there a co-conspirator
or another actor?

Is our city
vulnerable right now?

- But after the initial
review of surveillance video

in the room,
nobody else had been

seen with him in the room.

He was there by himself.

All the videos going
into the hotel,

you wouldn't have picked
him out of a crowd.

He looked like everybody else.

You know, he's just a tourist,
wearing a Tommy Bahama shirt,

you know, bringing bags in
on each successive trip.

Obviously, he was
bringing weapons.

- Immediately, we hit
the ground in Las Vegas.

The people that we interviewed
described the shooter

as not being
politically interested.

He was very self-interested,
self-absorbed.

And based on the CCTV,
the variety of footage of him

and his behavior in the time
leading up to the attack,

it was done alone.

It wasn't for terrorism.

[sirens wailing]

- There have been
victims running around

throughout the strip.

Some of them have
blood on them.

Some of them are wounded.

You're gonna think there's
a mass shooter on the strip.

So that's what prompted
a lot of those 911 calls.

- None of them turn
out to be true.

- Those phantom
calls kept coming in

for a good 25 minutes later.

And then after everything
was said and done,

no more active
shooter calls had

been coming in,
we grabbed the car,

and we took off to
find my son, Parker.

- I'm taking cover behind
the front desk at Excalibur.

And it's just kinda
nerve wracking

that I didn't know what
happened with my dad

at Mandalay Bay.

So when they walk in
through those doors,

And it was--

it was pretty emotional there.

It was more of
a, "I love you, OK."

"Everything's gonna be OK.

I love you,"
and then they walked out

to Boulevard and the Flamingo.

- They had mass casualties
sitting right there.

They had white sheets
set up all right there.

I didn't know how Gianna was
doing, where Natalia was.

I didn't know who is
dead or who is alive.

But at this point now,
everyone's kinda

waking up to the news.

- Parker and I went
to the hospital.

You never expect to have
these conversations with--

with your children.

But you know, I think
that--that instinct

that Parker has
kicked in,

and I couldn't be
more proud.

I needed to prepare him that,
hey, that we're probably

about to see a really
bad situation here

because we knew that
both of the girls were--

were shot.

We knew that it was pretty bad.

We went down there,
and that was

one of the most graphic
scenes that I've ever seen

in a hospital before.

[chatter]

- The ER was getting overrun.

We had taxicabs, Uber
drivers, trucks, cars.

And I got my hands on probably

30, 40 people--
50, maybe more.

I did quite a bit of CPR, and
you're trying to make calls,

and you're trying
to get pulses,

and you got people
screaming at you.

A lot of people that
we're pulling out

of these cars
that didn't make the ride.

And I remember saying
that to one man,

it was a horrible, horrible,
horrible conversation.

Sorry.

I didn't get a pulse,
and her eyes were open,

and they weren't blinking.

Based on what I was seeing,
she had passed.

And the pain that
was in that man's voice

losing his
wife right there,

I can still feel his pain.

I can still feel it.

And I remember
that conversation,

and wonder if I did
the right thing.

[sirens wailing]

- We had 58 surgeries
in the first 24 hours,

and 83 in the first five days.

Typically, a rifle round
will do more damage

than a handgun round, because
it's traveling at a much

higher rate of speed.

Fortunately, the shooter was
about 300 or 400 yards away

when it happened.

But they're still
devastating injuries.

- Getting a call that not
one but both of my daughters

had been shot was the worst and
farthest thing that ever

had come to my mind,
but it did.

It happened.

They were good kids that
never really got in trouble.

To me, a worse call
might have been

like, "I got a speeding
ticket."

A shooting was the last
thing in your mind.

And when I got to the
hospital, I didn't know

if they were alive.

It was a memory that I
can vividly see in my mind

to this day, just people
crying and screaming,

and blood, and torn clothes,
and people barefoot,

people dragging bodies.

Doctors running around
screaming, "Find me a gurney,"

and there wasn't any.

We turned into a hall and
there were a line of beds,

and I look over,
and I see Gianna.

And I run over to her,
and she just starts crying.

The doctors told me
that she was shot in the hip,

and she still had shrapnel
inside of her body.

But Gianna got released,
because they only

keeping people that
had life-threatening injuries.

And I could see through
the glass window,

and I saw Natalia
in the distance.

Natalia was in ICU, which
really scared me even worse.

I went back there and she
had the thing on her face,

and she had a neck brace.

And I looked up at her,
and she was just crying.

She couldn't, like, talk.

- I had two broken shoulder
blades and a collapsed lung.

The doctor said that he needed
to perform a chest tube on me.

Jackie, the nurse, came
with my sister, and got me.

And we were in
the room together.

Jackie told me they ran out
of morphine and chest tubes,

so they had to
makeshift a chest tube.

And I had to get cut open...

with no morphine at all,

and I grabbed Jackie's
hand so tight.

- We were holding each
other's hands like this.

And I was looking
into her face.

And I--I talked to her
the whole procedure.

We didn't have her
hooked up to oxygen,

and we did her chest
tube with no medication.

I told her it was
gonna be terrible.

But if you don't take
care of a collapsed lung,

then she would lose
oxygen to her brain,

all her vital organs.

Ultimately, you're gonna
have a heart attack.

Your heart's gonna also stop.

We were moving very, very
quickly, and it's fast,

but if you are the one getting
a scalpel cut into your side,

it probably feels like forever.

When she was screaming,
nothing was coming out.

And seeing Gianna's face
behind her,

that always hurt my heart
a little bit,

because to watch
your twin sister

going through that
in the realest way,

that kept me up at night.

I know I don't ever wanna

experience that pain
ever again.

The doctor said that I
am basically a miracle.

And he said it was only
a couple of millimeters

away from my main artery.

My sister laid
right next to me

all those days
that I was in ICU.

- So I get to the hospital.

I walked in super quiet.

I didn't want to wake them up
because I didn't know how long

they had been sleeping.

They made me tear up in
that ICU room.

Just seeing that whole family
'cause, man,

relief is what came.

I was like, thank God
we are all still here.

Just seeing Gianna,
like, sleeping

and just breathing normal--

I can see her.
I can talk to her.

I can hold onto her.

We didn't really talk much.

It was more of just, like,
us being together,

just being in each other's
presence, and knowing

that we're both still here.

I don't think he
said anything to me.

I think he was just
letting me rest.

And then once I opened my eyes,
we kinda just hugged.

After not knowing what he went
through, what I went through,

and it was so happy
to be together again.

[tense music]

- My husband, Jason,

the second he found me,
he didn't leave.

He stayed by my side.

And now I was actually able
to hear the doctors explain

to me what had happened.

And they said that I
would need probably

another two years of surgeries
to make a full recovery.

I couldn't even talk.
I just sat there.

And I remember, like, tears
just kinda, like, running down

my face,
and just having to, like,

remember that this
wasn't the end.

That, like, it was
gonna get better.

- I had bled
through my bandages.

I don't know exactly
how much blood I lost.

But I had the hole in my neck.

But it didn't hit my jugular,
which I was thankful.

And then you realize
that there's people

way more injured than myself.

And I remember looking
at this young kid

who was maybe a paramedic
or an EMT of some kind.

And I just remember
it looked like he was--

like he was
in a different world.

But he was doing triage,
and saying, you know,

this person's passed,
this person's passed.

- And you're just like, wow.

It's gut wrenching.

It took a lot out
of us that night, and--

Yeah.

- I remember standing
in that ER.

I was truly under
the impression

that I was gonna lose Brady.

The bullet traveled
down and exited

the inside of his tricep,
and then re-entered

the side of his chest.

That's when I think
the reality of how close

things were really set in.

I mean, an inch to the left,
it would've went

right through
the back of his head.

- I was totally
unaware of the injuries

that I had at the time.

They wheeled me back,
and immediately

started working on me.

Josh was amazing that night.

His quick response getting
me to the hospital.

That immediate medical care
no doubt helped save my life.

- Carrie's fiancé arrived,
but the hospital staff told us

we can't give you
any information,

because you're not related.

And he was in touch
with Carrie's parents.

Kelly and Carrie's fiancé
communicated to me that

she's been hit
in the shoulder.

I was just shaking, and I was
getting more and more anxious,

and more and more upset.

And I got to the hospital
in record time.

And then finally, I got
to where Kelly and Carrie's

fiancé, Randall, were,
and we were just waiting.

And it seemed to take forever.

I just thought
she's just upstairs.

She just has a shoulder wound.

But no one would
look me in the eye.

- After Carrie's mom
arrived at the hospital,

they brought us into,
like, a private room.

And it was a doctor,
a nurse, and a priest.

- Finally, I just saw all of
these doctors coming down

the hallway,
and in the back was

a guy with a clerical
collar, and I--

I just knew.

And that was it.

I didn't want to leave her.

So--

Sorry.

- Once we regained
some composure,

the doctor was
able to explain that

because the bullet had
actually come from the side,

it went through her lung,
and maybe some other organs.

But her odds of survival were
so low with that positioning

of the wound.

Carrie didn't make it.

She didn't deserve this.

[dark tone]

[sirens wailing]

- There was this time
period of just really

not knowing where everybody
was, how they were.

It was pretty scary.

- OK.

- And then,
I remember finally,

some cops came to the bus.

- They took us
into a parking lot.

The police had an
armored vehicle there.

But you just know
it's not good.

It looks like--
like a bomb went off.

- The police officer walked
us through the middle of

the crowd towards the airport.

We saw the carnage
that's left.

Literally stepping over bodies
to get out of there.

- I told my wife, keep your
head down, look at your feet.

Don't look around.

And let's get out of here.

You know, the fact that
it was--it was our fans,

you know, it's people that like
our music that came out there.

I just kind of wanna put
my arms around everybody

and just kinda, like, protect
them and just make it better.

- We pronounced several people
dead in the next few hours

that had been running.

So we had to go looking up
and down streets,

to see who made it
and who didn't.

One of the things I
had to do to everybody

is I checked for a pulse.

[exhales]

When I checked for
a pulse on this one lady,

a tear came out of her eye.

She was expired.

But somehow a tear
came out of her eye.

And that--I lost it.

You know, that--
that that was rough.

I probably cried more that
night than I had in my career.

The eerie thing
was the cell phones

that were going off.

Because--

you know that nobody's
gonna answer that cell phone.

And, you know, there a lot of
people on the other side.

They're just trying to
check on their loved ones.

And there's a lot of
folks that were still

scattered throughout
the grounds,

and obviously not moving.

- If you live in Las Vegas,
the chances are

you knew somebody
that was at that concert,

or had a child that was
there that was injured.

A lot of the concert goers
were staying at Mandalay Bay.

We started down on
the first floor,

and we were clearing
all the way up

to the very top of the Casino.

And I remember thinking as
we kept going up in floors,

the body count kept getting
higher and higher and higher.

- We came across
a lot of rooms

that had country western-wear

hanging up, and you couldn't
help but think how many

of those people were
not going to make it

back to those rooms.

- What happened?

How could it be stopped?

How could you save
other people's lives?

You try to figure out
what caused your--

our daughter's death.

You don't understand it.

[somber music]

- The only person that could
really tell us why they

did what they did was dead.

There was no explanation,
a legacy token,

something that would describe,
"Hey, here's the reason

that I did all of this."

The behavioral
analysis unit,

we have people on contract
that are medical doctors,

psychiatrists, psychologists.

Our driving mission with these
is to help bring some closure.

- Going up to the 32nd floor,

the shooter
is deceased behind me.

And there was just sort
of a sense of evil,

kind of in the room,
of what had just happened,

and how much damage this
person had just done,

how much carnage this
person had just done.

I do remember at some point
seeing numbers in the teens,

and then it turned into 20s,
and just thinking to myself,

there could be
hundreds of dead here.

This was the worst mass
shooting in U.S. history.

The looming question was,
what would drive one person

to do this, and why?

- Control Zebra 20,
copy some information,

possibly related
with the suspect.

- You had conspiracy
theories from every angle.

- You get a search
warrant for his house,

and we start peeling
back the layers.

- Maybe he shouldn't have
been able to buy 40 guns.

- I thought that things
were going to change.

- I want people to know
the faces of the people

we lost that night.

- There is no right or
wrong way to process this.

[somber music]
