Hi, I'm Fernando Salem,
I'm a director and screenwriter.

The truth, at the beginning
did not think about being a film director.

I grew up in my dad's leather goods.

My dad used to make purses
and I helped him in the workshop

and there I started to draw.

For a long time I thought
that I was going to be a veterinarian.

Then I thought I could be an architect.

I liked watching cartoons
like any other guy

and, the truth is, I've never
thought of

working on cartoons.

At the end I finished studying
Film Direction.

It cost me to go to school
because ten students come in per year.

While studying Science
Communication in Buenos Aires

I was trying
to enter ENERC.

I entered the third year that I tried,

tenth, in the last place.

The truth is that I entered because I lied.

At the entrance I said that I had finished
Communication Sciences,

and that I was not going to work

and that I was going to dedicate
to the film career.

My first film apprenticeship
was that you have to learn

to lie very well
to be a film director.

During my film career I worked
for eight, nine hours a day

and I spent the rest of the day.

I knew I had to finish
the Film School

with a short film
that at least it would be understood

for someone to hire me
as a film director.

I put a lot of energy
in my thesis short film

called "Triplets propaganda!".

Luckily, that short film that I made
with an amazing team

that I'm still working with,
was selected in Venice.

That made me believe that I could
continue working as a film director

and the truth is that this short film
opened many doors for me.

It was worth putting so much effort
in "Triplets propaganda!".

When Francis Ford Coppola
to Argentina

to film "Tetro",
went to the Film School

to see which were
the most outstanding students.

Luckily, I was there close

and I started working
as a production assistant.

I was already thirty years old,
the same age

as the director of photography,
but, nevertheless, I was serving coffee,

putting cones to stop the transit,
loading handys,

put danger tapes.

That was my main occupation.

In addition to spying
for the video assist

of Ford Coppola all the time

along with my production partners,
we were directing

disguised as production assistants.

It was 9 months of learning
to see an amazing director working.

Not only did I steal

many techniques
from the direction of actors,

but production models
that I would later use

for my next film.

One of my first works

was as assistant director
for Juan Antin,

animation director
for "Mercano the Martian",

and for the movie "Pachamama",
that came out very recently.

There I started to understand a little
how the animation worked

and the truth is that Juan
taught me a lot.

The first works

a little bit more seriously
than it was for the channel Encuentro,

for a producer
where I directed for the first time,

It's called "The dog in the Moon".

There I started working
traveling through Argentina,

touring schools.

There we could say
that I learned about childhood

and I started to understand how they think.

That would later help me

for my next project:
"Zamba's amazing tour".

In 2009, within the framework of the celebrations
of the bicentennial of Argentina,

proposed me to make a cartoon.

had to do a children's program
about the May Revolution

and that's where
came from "Zamba's amazing tour".

I directed episodes of this series
from 2009 to 2016.

Fortunately, he was nominated
for the Emmy Kids Awards.

That helped us to keep thinking
formats for children's audience

and with the same team
we thought "Siesta Z".

Also "Siesta Z" was nominated
to the Emmy Kids Awards.

Thanks to these two programs we got
to almost everyone.

At the same time,
since I graduated from the School,

I was writing
for almost eight years

a feature film called
"How Almost Everything Works".

The truth is that this feature film
was very well received by the public.

He was more than fourteen months
in the same cinema

in the Malba,
Museum of Latin American Art

and was also sold to Netflix.

In addition the film had many awards

and recognitions
in international festivals.

I recently gave a talk
at TEDx Rio de la Plata

about the creation process
of "The amazing Zamba excursion"

and there I had the opportunity
to thank Claudio,

my elementary teacher,

for the work that was taken

and that talk worked very well
and went viral among teachers

because it talks about the
footprint that they leave the teachers in the students.

After having written
almost one hundred episodes

between the series "Zamba" and "Siesta",

I was summoned
to write a series

that I really like called "Petit"

and is based on the work
of Isol Misenta.

It's an experience that I enjoy
because it's a co-production

between Argentina, Chile and Colombia.

Very recently, "Petit"
was selected to participate

in the prestigious
Festival of Annecy, France.

In 2016 I founded
my production company Caudillo Cine

with my partner Diego Amson.

We do series,

advertising projects,
animation projects,

develop formats
for television,

and we produced my second movie:
"Death does not exist and the love either. "
