You have a lot of
missing persons.

You know, you have
kids running away.

You have parents who have
taken a kid because of

custody battles, and uh, usually
most of them are actually found.

They were just always so...

kind've like hyperactive.

You know, they were always
playing and running around

and being loud and...

They just loved
being outside.

There was just something
different in the air.

It's really
hard to explain.

Um, kind've like when a
storm's coming and um...

Things are kind've
electric in air and you

feel the hairs on your arms
start to kinda tingle.

This particular year
in question uh...

We had tripled reports that we
normally get which was unique.

And the ones surrounding
this particular case were,

were never found.

The boys were a little
bit different that day.

I don't... They were
just sitting there.

They looked really tired
like maybe they were

getting sick or, or
something like that.

It didn't seem
normal for them.

It was odd.

When I mentioned that to
another adult that was

outside with me, um, she
went to kinda check for

herself and
they were gone.

At first, when I didn't
see them I thought maybe

they had got up to play and
were in one of the tunnels

or under slide or
something like that.

So I really didn't think
much of it at the time.

In an abduction the parents
never really know

what happened to their child.

Who took them, where they
are, whether they're alive

or dead, and that becomes so
difficult for the parents.

They often keep the,
the room of the child

that's been abducted
completely the same.

They don't touch it, they
don't move things,

they don't put things away.

There's no allowances for
the child ever growing up,

because in the parent's
mind, that child, if that

child is abducted at the
age of six, that child

forever remains six years old
in their heart and their head.

And it's very hard for them
to move on in that way,

because they always
have the hope that that

child will be returning.

So they don't want to put
away their things,

they don't want to give
anything away, they want

to keep it all there for
the child in case the

return happens.

Well, there was a lot of
pressure in the community

to find out what happened.

Some people did blame me.

Well, really, I guess it was
just mainly one person that,

that blamed me.

They will start looking
at everyone on the street

differently, cause that person
might've taken their child.

It's a... a necessary evil
that you investigate everybody.

You go through parents,
you go through family,

you go through siblings
and friends.

Mili was very
persistent in, uh...

getting updates from us,
and, uh, uh, we had to

constantly tell her that these
kind of things go slow.

Gathering, you know,
evidence is, is very slow

and in these cases, there
was not a whole lot of

evidence to be gathered.

We just couldn't
find them.

She just started ranting
and was just kind of

getting out of control.

You know, I
thought that...

you know, once things
calmed down she would

realize that it wasn't
my fault, but she kept

calling me and sending
notes, and she'd show up

at my house, and she just
kind of kept after me,

blaming me for it.

But it just got to the
point where I had to get a

restraining order.

They'll do anything to make
sense of what happened.

They will create a story where
there really is no story.

And sometimes it's, it's a
simple story, within the

bounds of, of, of you
know, rational thought...

but sometimes, uh, it
takes a turn, and they

will start to see things
that aren't really there,

and start to have ideas that
really go outside of reality.

I'm talking, you know,
alien abductions, or

paranormal activity, uh,
you know, the "Boogie Man,"

if you will, came
and took their child.

And they start to see things
in places where, um...

where, where no
one else does.

Well, it sounds kind of
crazy, but she would start

talking about this
faceless man.

I was so affected by
it, I couldn't go back.

The one thing that Mili
always said to me that has

kinda stayed with me,
it's always stuck out.

She would always say, "You
can't run away from his

shadow forever."

We'd been partners for,
well, about a year.

He was young, idealistic,
as we all were.

He had good
instincts, and, uh...

he was a good
partner to have.

Good person to be
watching your back.

And this seemed to
really get to him.

I think it's cause he was
young, he had a young

family, young kids at
the time, and, uh...

and so he took this
case very personally.

In their attempt to be
supportive and sympathetic

to this parent who's lost
a child, they'll start to

kind of take it on, and
think, well maybe there

really is something
to this...

this very irrational
thinking around this

child's disappearance, and
it can, it can throw, uh,

families, um, you know,
whole communities into

kind of a group, almost...

I don't want to call it a
psychosis, but definitely

a group delusion.

As far as that night...
uh, got a call in from him,

saying that he'd actually
found another one of

the missing kids.

Well, the little girl,
actually, didn't end up

being missing.

She was with her family
the entire evening, so...

You know, these kind of
cases are very stressful.

And, uh...

like I said, he took these
things very personally.

Other than that I can't
explain why he thought

that specific girl was
there, however, there was

an abandoned
vehicle there.

You know, we were both involved,
we were both on the case.

And, at that moment in
time, you know, Marty

actually broke from protocol,
followed a lead by himself.
