Miles: This is my first night staying at the residence my grandmother lived in before they took her away

I can't think why I've come

All I know is that I need to process the horrors which I can still hardly believe

took place here

To say that I was surprised that she had left this place to me

let alone include me in her will at all

is an understatement

Our last words exchanged all those years ago

were not kind ones

It is said that you should never speak ill of the dead

but how could I speak kindly of a being

who did such unspeakable things to those young women?

There is a small part of me

who thinks it may well have been my name in those obituaries

had I not left when I did

The cottage itself is clean and in better standing than I expected

After the news of the atrocities that were committed here broke

I thought there may be some minor damage

broken windows, a battered door

perhaps even an attempt at arson

but the place is perfectly fine

Except...

[Sound of a door creaking]

Except that I do not feel quite alone in this place

I can't describe it exactly

but a foreboding feeling seems to almost seep

from the wallpaper here

I suppose it ought to be almost a given knowing what took place here

Miles: Christ!

Flora: What are you doing here?

Miles: What am I doing here? What are you doing here? This is my house!

Flora: Have you come to stay?

Miles: Stay?

Flora: Don't leave me here

Flora: Please

Miles: You know, you look familiar to me

have we... met before?

Miles: It's crazy

it's just the stress

[Miles hears a creaking step behind her]

Miles: What do you want?

Flora: You can't leave me here

Miles: Who are you?

Flora: Flora

Miles: Flora?

that's the name of one of the women who...

Flora: Dead

Miles: How can you be dead when you're stood before me? When I can touch you

you're freezing!

and yet beautiful

not some rotted corpse!

Flora: I wish I were a rotted corpse, disintegrated from this earth

but instead I am trapped here, through no will of my own

like some hapless creature in a zoo, with no one to talk to and only my thoughts for company

Miles: You can't be real

Flora: You can't leave me here

[There are birds singing and chirping outside]

[The birds are gay]

[A classical piece of music plays]

[The piano is questioning]

Miles: I can't rest with your incessant watching!

What she did to you was nothing to do with me

I'm not

angry

it's just every time

I see a woman's face in the papers

I think

there

but for the grace of God

go I

Flora: The way you move around this place is disturbing

you know

if you and I were to stand side by side

I don't think an observer would be able to tell who's dead

Miles: So

you're not just some ghastly trick of the mind?

Flora: No

Miles: How can you be dead and yet sat before me?

Dead creatures don't wander around

they lie still and they rot

Flora: How can I rest when there is no one to put me so?

Miles: I remember reading in the papers that they never found your body

Yours was the only one they never found here

Flora: Not since the day I arrived

thinking that I had found a good place to stay

and yet for all the years since

I have been confined with only my memories of what happened

Can you imagine what I've had to endure?

Miles: Yes I can

and I don't like to think of it

Flora: I haven't seen another soul in all the years I've been here

and now

someone that I actually care about

I thought having you here would make my dreary sentence

a happier one

Stay with me

Miles: So I'm to be sentenced too?

How can you ask me to stay in a place which carries so much misery within it?

Where I'm to be reminded everyday of what she did to you?

Flora: And how can you leave me in a place which carries so much misery in it?

That may as well be a capacious coffin?

You can feel it yourself how this place

almost threatens to seep blood from the

very floorboards it was spilled upon and yet you would leave me here still?

Miles: It's not up to me to atone for her crimes!

I know nothing of you but a face in the paper

I can barely believe my eyes that you even exist

and yet you keep asking me to stay here with you

[Sound of cup smashing against the wall]

I ought to leave here

but the strangest thing has occurred

I fear for both my own sanity

and the future of this house

Is it possible that there is life after death?

The thought is too terrible and illogical to even consider

and yet I have been confronted with it all the same

This is going to sound as though I've lost my wits

but this place was not as vacant as I thought

It is in fact, inhabited

by someone who was declared missing and deceased

at the hands of my grandmother

At first, I was fearful of her presence

and then the queerest thing happened

I was completely overcome with longing

Longing for this woman who stood before me

cold as February

strangely alluring and familiar to me

She asks if I might stay here with her

but what do I know of her motives?

I have not a single soul

outside of this house who cares for me

but it would seem that I have one inside of it

I will go to bed tonight with two questions:

Are unrestful souls truly bound

for eternal earthly incarceration?

And if so,

is it possible

that I may fall in love with one of them?

Miles: I can feel you here

Flora: Were you close with her?

Miles: No

I mean, she practically raised me

but

she never liked me very much

Disdain goes somewhat over your head

as a child

but the older I got, it became

apparent that there was something

pernicious and

untoward...

Flora: What is it?

Miles: I was only exposed to her temper once but

once was enough to make me leave

The last thing I knew of her

she was taking in lodgers

young,

female lodgers

but I never dreamed that...

Flora: Dreamed?

Dreamed of what?

Miles: Life is neither fair

nor kind to women

and

if they choose to imitate their cruel fortune

through character

then I tend to forgive them

but what she did

I never imagined

that she was capable of such

departure

from morality

Flora: How could you have known?

How could I have known?

You never truly know a person

not really

whether you know them for five minutes or five years, it doesn't make any difference

Miles: Do you think you know me?

Flora: Well

I think that you're just as trapped and alone as I am

seeing you wander around this place, with the life

hollowed out of you

Miles: Perhaps you do know me

Flora: Stay with me

Miles: Flora, I don't think I have anything left to give

a person

living

or dead

Flora: You mean you don't want to give me anything

Miles: It's just the opposite

[Gay ghost kissing]

Miles: I can't leave you here

I can't even think of leaving you

my heart won't allow it

Not even if I wanted to walk

out of this door could I do it

It's as though I'm chained to these walls

Flora: Not the walls

Miles: You?

Flora: You and I

We are one in the same now

Miles: What have you done to me?

Flora: Welcome

to the other side
