big crude ugly there's nothing romantic

or exciting about a dredge but there's

nothing so important as keeping a harbor

in shape and the channel's open and

nothing does the job like these noisy

monsters

I was busy on an equally unromantic job

of working ahead of this dredge in the

Caribbean Harbor when I caught sight of

something that I could hardly believe a

United States Navy LST landing ship tank

was lying there on the bottom directly

in the path of the approaching dredge I

checked it out thoroughly I couldn't

quite believe it because as far as I

knew no landing craft had ever been in

this part of the Caribbean much less

than something

I decided that I'd better get in touch

with the US Navy they'd be much more

interested than I would be if somebody

had hijacked a ship of theirs lately the

Navy was very much interested in LST for

277 I asked me to check in with one of

their ships at a nearby island

good morning mr. Nelson for 277 was at

the number yeah that's right she was

sunk by enemy action 12 September 1944

enemy action in the Caribbean

that's why intelligence is interested as

far as we know she was shelled by a

submarine though we lack certain proof

and the files still open since 1944 for

277 had a complement of 23 officers 17

listed men 18 of them died there were

two survivors the skipper

commander Jack Clayton and machinist

mate Thomas ory 18 dead the sunken LST

is worth of footnote in the history

books

but we want all the answers we want to

know just why and how those men died but

the Navy likes the authority that

stopped the dredging just to solve an

old puzzle well I see I'm working in

that area so you'd like let me take a

look around that's exactly what I would

the dredge was getting closer and closer

to the sunken LST they dynamited out of

the way in a short time

so I went out to see the crew and tried

to talk him into working in another

direction for a while they were very

nice about it

they agreed to keep away from the LST

for two more days that gave us only 48

hours to solve a puzzle many years old

I set up the first dive at once or at

least I tried to I like Jack Clayton but

he was getting into his equipment as if

he were being introduced to it for the

first time Mike I'm sorry I'm a little

rusty

once we were underwater we spotted the

LST very quickly it must have been a

strange feeling for Clayton to see the

ship that was shot out from under him

I was looking for shell damage I didn't

find any perhaps it was covered by the

sand which the years had swept around

the hole it was hard to be certain time

and saltwater corrosion had done a lot

of damage the fort 277 was mostly rust

held together by barnacles if they ever

let go of each other's hands the ship

would fall apart

I spotted Clayton signaling me a short

distance off apparently he hadn't found

anything either

he seemed tired and much less expert now

that I have thought at first we headed

for the surface

got hit in the bow first that's where

she got hit well to make sure I think I

check stop

I only have one spare tank can you go

get it there's a laugh and we've got to

get moving that dredge is due here in

this area the first thing in the morning

can't we work around the dredge no he's

gonna blow up that LST I'm gonna clear

out of the way we only got the day I was

beginning to think that Clayton carried

a jinx on his back now our start was

delayed even further

I made a firm resolve this was going to

be the last delay

we reach the LST in a few minutes and we

separate it again

Clayton was sure that the shells had hit

the bow but I wanted to check the stern

and the engine room

I went inside the hole it was like

diving into an elevator shaft deep and

very lonely

I was right the hall was breached right

here it could have been a shell hole

something else whatever it was it was

below the waterline

I headed out I wanted to check with

Clayton

I couldn't spot him but I heard a

grinding noise above all of a sudden the

nightmare was caving in on me

somebody had shoved that massive junk at

me

the only some money in sight was Clayton

he was trying to get away

it was awhile obstacle race through the

twisted remains of the LST

all of a sudden Clayton wasn't such a

clumsy amateur after all

when he pulled a knife I really saw red

I wasn't angry now so much is puzzled I

had liked Clayton but now he tried to

kill me why I didn't have any answers

well who was right huh

it's the stern of the bow what's the

matter skip something happened yeah

something happened somebody tried to

didn't try to kid what are you crazy

charge of dynamite not far away the

rotten old LST vibrated and then the

roof fell in

at least a lot of heavy debris

I was trapped my regulator was damaged

I didn't know how Clayton had gotten

free and I didn't care he had me but

good if he just waited I drowned before

his eyes and that's what he was doing

just waiting
