Times talk about search engines and searching online how your search is logged how search engines track

you.

Sensi you sell your data on what you can do to mitigate it.

So who are the major players.

Well if you look here in front of you you can see on surprising Google is the major player with nearly

70 percent of global searches for by being Baidu you not heard of Baidu Baidu is the Chinese engine

which looks like this.

Obviously in other countries there are more dominant players in Google.

You can see there's an international break down in Russia.

For example they have Yandex which looks like this.

In fact they are pretty much the same.

And then if you look here you can see by way in China's actually got quite a huge grip over searching

in China.

But I'm going to concentrate on the major global player.

Google for this video but the same applies to all the top search engines.

I'm going to talk about in this video.

So the first point is that Google and the other search engines are not just search engines.

People often think you know they are just search engines but they're absolutely not.

They offer many services they have their fingers in many pies which makes their ability to track you

expeditiously more powerful.

I mean if we think about Google for example Google has its search facility but it's also got YouTube

.

It's got social media through Google Plus and other things it's got e-mail.

It's got G-mail.

It's got Maps.

Google Earth.

It's got books.

It's got news groups.

It's got Google Docs.

It's got the Google app store.

It develops Android the smartphone operating system.

They develop Kro so you can really trust Chrome.

If you're concerned about google tracking you can't use Chrome if you're concerned about google tracking

they control it.

Also Google has something called Google safe browsing.

This is a service provided by Google that provides lists of view or else that contain malware or phishing

content.

Google Chrome Apple Safari Mozilla Firefox and other web browsers use these lists that come from Google

.

So there's an interaction between those browsers and do go as you browse the web.

So every site you visit is effectively checked by Google unless that switched off.

So as you can see Google especially and these other search engines have the thing is in many pies which

enables them to track you which gives them more channels to monitor what you're doing.

Also other sites help the search engines to track you because embedded in all the sites not owned by

Google or Google Analytics code and social media buttons and scripts as we've seen in the section on

tracking because of all these channels that Google has.

It's not just Google searches that are loved by Google but many of the sites you visit to web Google

Code is embedded in this site.

In 2012 an estimated 63 percent of Fortune 500 Web sites were using Google Analytics.

Moving on from 2012 to 2015 2016 according to the web privacy censors google tracking infrastructure

is on 92 of the top 100 most popular Web sites and on 923 at the top 1000 Web sites providing Google

within significant surveillance infrastructure online.

This means that Google will know a huge percentage of where you are going online and what you are doing

plus your searches and you will doesn't stop there.

They also have corporate agreements with other Web sites to understand and negotiate and share information

to understand better who you are so they can sell better to you.

If you are logged into Google.

Say you have your G-mail you have Google Docs or you have you chew.

There is a direct link to your Google account and the things that you search if you are not logged in

.

Then there is still no reason to believe your activity isnt logged against you because there is a persistent

or persistent cookies in your browser.

Google actually documents quite well the cookies that they use even when you're not logged into Google

.

They will still recognize the browser because of the persistent cookies.

And let's have a look at one of those cookies.

I'm using the advanced cookie manager here where I can see this is coming from Google dot com and this

is on a browser that removes history and it removes cookies.

But this need cookie keeps coming back.

There's the value of the cookie in the and if we go here we can see on Google's Web site goolies cookies

like Ned and said to help customize ads on Google properties like Google search.

So they're very clear about it in their documentation about the various cookies that they do use in

order to advertise to you more effectively.

But at the same time this is tracking you and you may not be comfortable with this level of privacy

invasion.

Many people also have Google as their home page on their browser.

So from the moment you start your browser you are sending data to Google.

It's important to realize that this data may be indefinitely stored and can one day be requested and

used against you.

This data could be accessed via subpoenas and court orders or by your adversary in some way.

Be aware that unless you make an effort to prevent logging and monitoring this data is being accumulated

with your name on it.

The search engines could accidentally or deliberately disclose your own activity.

They could get hacked they could make a mistake.

AOL released supposedly anonymous search terms for research purposes except they didn't do a good job

of making them completely anonymous and they were ultimately sued over it.

Let's look at the privacy policy and Terms of Service for Google.

They are pretty upfront about the tracking and monitoring that they do.

This is why you get a free service.

They also have a browser plug in.

So if you do a search where we can have a look and see what the breakdown is of what Google's Terms

of Use are.

So here we can see Google keeps your searches and other identifiable user information for an undefined

period of time.

You can use your content for all their existing and future services.

This service tracks you on other Web sites you can share your personal information with other parties

.

Google may stop providing services to you any time.

So probably nothing that you wouldn't have expected.

And if you click on more details if you're interested you can go through and look into more details

and then you can dig into the actual documents themselves if you're interested.

Then you have what is probably the more traditional form of censorship which is nation state sponsored

censorship like China is blocking of Google results relating to the 25th anniversary of the Channon

Square protests which is as I said before most people probably think of when they think of censorship

.

Censorship is very likely coming to many Western countries to greater and lesser extent.

So the conclusion is search engines and other services they provide trackers.

They invade our privacy and can potentially censor is the tracking shouldn't come as any surprise.

These are free services and generally with any free service they monetize by using or selling your personal

data.

You get what you pay for.

You can't really complain when it's free.

They have to make money somewhere or other interested parties will also be snooping on your searches

especially if they are not encrypted.

You know your school your work or university and your nation state Google uses Hastey CPS as do many

of the search engines as default for searching but all the search engines may not so you need to check

that you should be using Haiti TPF to search as a minimum privacy protection from people who are trying

to snoop and look at the traffic.

So what do we know about what nation states might be doing to spy on our searches.

section on tracking the nation state profiling of browsers because of their ubiquity and unique.

And from documents it looks like they are being used for profiling you online.
