be able to handle it

with what we've got.

When they are

PAUL (off-screen): Hey,
hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.

Boone's chasing something.

(whistles)

Come on, let's go.

Oh jeez.

I don't like the look of that.

This is moose poop
and we're in the rut.

They tend to be quite
aggressive during the rut

and I don't want
Boone to get gored.

Boone, get here.

NARRATOR: With fall
temperatures plummeting,

Maine's 75,000 strong moose
population is on the move.

In their short,
intense breeding season,

they are highly aggressive
as they seek a mate

and try to protect their young.

For the human canine teams,

the slightest misstep
could spell disaster.

PAUL: Come, good boy.

Yeah, you're gonna get
messed up, brother.

Yeah, hunting dog.

This is, Boone,
he's a six years old,

German short haired pointer.

Boone's a hunting dog,

and so he's got incredibly
strong prey drive.

He's also pretty aggressive
toward would-be predators;

coyotes, bears, the like.

It takes a lot to
exhaust this pup.

He'll be the muscle.

I've had Boone since
he was 14 weeks.

I've always had versatile
hunting dog breeds

and my wife wanted a cuddler.

We've got the best
of both worlds,

Boone is very much a cuddler,
he's also a primal hunter.

He's, kind of, Jekyll
and Hyde-ish in that way.

Come on. Good boy.

Now, with my survival
knowledge and skills,

if I can get Boone to focus
his prey drive and energy

into helping me find
food and pull loads,

I think we'll
make an awesome team

out here in the
wilderness for ten days.

Good job, Boone,
that's a creek, whoo.

This rain sucks because, like,
you don't really notice it,

until you're freakin' soaked.

Let's find a spot, Boone.

NARRATOR: Maine's unpredictable
fall weather is perilous

for the human-canine teams.

Frequent heavy rainstorms
can change quickly to snow,

or sleet, and can last for days.

PAUL: This is camp.

I just need to clear out all
this brush so I can get tarp up.

(thunder)

I'm worried about getting dry,
but the first thing I gotta do,

is gather all my materials,
get some fire going.

You got it, you got it,
up the trail.

Good boy.

Good dog.

Yeah, I know.

Here, dig, dig, dig,
this one, this one!

This is not the shelter
in intended to build,

but I had to get it going,
because Boone needs a dry place.

NARRATOR: As Paul
and Boone struggle

against the
bone-chilling downpour,

the team, one ridge line over,

is able to focus on shelter
building under clear skies...

CHAD: How do you like that, huh?

NARRATOR: For now.

CHAD: Timber.

Bingo.

Northern weather here
is rainy and snowy

and if the weather gets nasty

then we need to
prepare for that.

Look at that, buddy.

What I'm gonna do here
is I'm gonna rely on Axe

to help me be able
to haul this wood,

we can start to build
our little shelter.

This is my battle buddy, Axe.

Axe is a chocolate lab, he's a
trained service dog for PTSD.

I'm a navy veteran

and I suffer from
post-traumatic stress syndrome.

You know, I was confronted with
some really bad situations,

going through a lot of
anger, depression, anxiety.

I see Axe as my battle buddy,

I know he's gonna
be there regardless.

We'll take care of each other

and that's what
we're supposed to do.

Me and Axe are trying
to find a balance

between service dog
and survival dog.

The experience is definitely
a learning process

for the both of us.

Let's go.

When me and Axe first started
training for survival

there was some confusion,
you know,

and I think that's
where I have to try

to watch my commands
and what I say,

that way it won't tangle up
how they translate to him.

Let's go.
This way, this way.

I can see Axe is,
like, well, you know,

you want me in service
dog mode or survival dog?

Those are two different
types of animals.

You did amazing.

You're the best.

NARRATOR: For the next ten days,
the three teams will attempt

to earn up to a
maximum ten points,

based on the success of
their survival skills.

CHAD: I've planted two
stakes on each side

and then I'm gonna use
braces and paracord to hold

my wall together, basically.

NARRATOR: Teamwork is critical.

Each pair must work together
to source; food, water,

secure fire, build sturdy
shelter and stay mentally tough.

Earning a point if they succeed
and two points if they excel.

If a team taps out early,
they forfeit the competition.

CHAD: This is
looking pretty good.

NARRATOR: After ten days,
the team with the highest score

is declared the winner.

CHAD: Not bad.
Good job, buddy.

NARRATOR: Chad and Axe have made
a solid start on their shelter,

but it needs to be robust
enough to protect them

from the winter storms
that are rolling in.

A few valleys away,

a seasoned climber and
her energetic companion,

are trying to get their
bearings in unfamiliar terrain.

LINDSEY: Can you
get through there?

Got a little bit of a bog there.

I'm starting to see that
it's a bit wet in spots,

see if we come across a lake
or something, pond even.

I swear that looks
like water, Fynn.

Oh, my God, I think it is.

Oh, Fynny, what's that?

Water.

Look at this.

We have constant water
source for drinking

and hopefully gonna yield
some food for us, some fish.

Let's go this way.

We gotta find where it's
gonna be a bit more dry,

where we can build a home.

This is Fynn and he is
around nine years old,

and he's an
Australian Cattle Dog.

Fynn can help me fetching
firewood, helping find bait,

whether it's under rocks
or in a dead tree.

He's maybe not the toughest dog,

but he's really good at
adapting to the situation.

When I met Fynn,
he was a bit skittish,

he was, kind of, scared.

I was, kind of,
wanting a companion

but not ready for a
human one, I guess.

It was a gamble but
I just went for it

and I ended up adopting him.

You know, we're
joined at the hip.

His number one goal
is to, like, be with me

and we love going climbing,

all the time,
as much as possible.

Check out these rocks, Fynn.

He loves the outdoors,

but, he can be really
scared of certain things.

So, it's, it's something that
I'm really hoping we can,

like, overcome together.

Whoa. What is that?

It's, like, a roof, a
boulder roof and look,
it gets a bit of sun.

That's cool.

I need your help,
let's clear it up.

Dig, dig, dig, dig!

Good boy, get all
these leaves out.

Good, that's awesome,
Fynny, more, more, more.

Get 'em all out.

NARRATOR: Fynn's
instinct for digging

helps Lindsey clear
space for a fire-pit

while she figures out a
plan to obtain enough water

for their days to come.

LINDSEY: Yeah, you're
helping momma, good boy.

My tarp, it's really big

and now that we have a
roof over our heads,

I don't really need this,

so, I'm gonna cut some
of it off to make,

like, a water bladder.

My idea would be something,
like, a sack

and just make one big
haul of water up here.

It's like a duffel bag.

The water will
just sit in there.

Just gotta scoop it up,
come on, let's go.

Fynn and I are here to prove
that maybe you don't need

all of the nitty gritty
knowledge of survival skills

to actually survive.

When it comes down to it,
then those survival skills just,

kind of, come out of you.

You just make it work.

We're, like, the underdogs.

We've got these
hidden potentials

and we're gonna dig deep
and pull those out.

I think that this
experience will force us

to just learn so much.

It will make us both stronger.

Hmm, it smells so good.

I think it's a Labrador tea.

This is great, there's
a whole bunch there.

I know you can eat these guys,
this one's one whole calorie.

This is probably gonna
have to sustain us

until we find some
proper real food.

NARRATOR: With the
shortening daylight hours,

temperatures drop
dramatically at night.

The teams race against
the setting sun

to secure their shelters

and protect them from
the cold nights ahead.

CHAD: Dig.

Let's go, boy, good boy.

Good boy.

Added some of this
birch and voilà.

LINDSEY (off-screen):
I do like this spot a lot,

I'm gonna be so cozy tonight.

Look at that.

It's really, it's nice
to see him so relaxed.

It's gonna be a really
nice night here.

NARRATOR: As day one
draws to a close,

Mother Nature unleashes a
torrent of freezing rain.

Forcing Paul to face
the consequences

of his hastily
strung up shelter.

PAUL: I'm frustrated
with myself,

this is not how I wanted
things to be going

at this stage in the game,
I mean, this is day one.

Boone is shivering and he wants
to be warm and I'm struggling,

man, I'm struggling.

(thunder)

♪ ♪

PAUL: Last night sucked.

I got water, so, don't
worry about that.

I mean, it snowed
last night, so,

it's pretty easy
to collect water

and I don't even really
have to boil it.

The weather was absolutely
terrible and relentless.

Boone is wondering what
the hell's going on.

Never really been
this ill-prepared

for a night in the woods.

I don't like making
impulsive decisions

and I made an impulsive
decision to make camp here,

'cause I thought that
as I was walking,

there'd be greener pastures but,

and then I got caught
out in the rain

and then we had to
do what we had to do.

I think I just need to
build a warmer, safer home.

When my dad was in
his early 20s,

he and his father went
into the woods.

I think it was 16 days and
they built a cabin together

and so I always knew that
I wanted to build a cabin.

I had some family land that
I was allowed to build on,

I built a cedar log
cabin with a loft.

It's my happy place and
what's really cool about it

is I know I can
build another one.

I think a change of venue is
gonna be good for my psyche,

I think it's gonna
be good for Boone,

we're gonna keep Boone dryer.

I'm not gonna let
this slush deter me

from completing this challenge.

NARRATOR: As Paul digs into
all his survival skills,

to push back against
the elements,

on the other side
of the mountain,

Lindsey and Fynn start
the day with optimism,

but feeling the effects of
an exhausting first day.

LINDSEY (off-screen): Yeah.

Are you waking up?

Come on, Fynny pig.

I definitely felt a twinge
of hunger in the night.

First mission; go fishing.

Fynn, are you coming?

Let's get up.

Good boy, yeah.

Come on, Fynny,
this way, over here.

I want you to dig
right here, dig, get it.

Get it, come on, dig.

Find them, find those grubs.

Oh, my God, what's that?
What is that?

A wormy worm,
I got it, I got it.

Good job.

Look, you caught that.
You caught that.

Fynny got his bait,
now we can fish.

Take this guy and
put him on the hook.

I don't really refer to myself
as, like, a survivalist,

but I would definitely call
myself an outdoors person.

I'm a climber.

Climbing is just
one of these sports

where you're pushing your limit.

I love it.

I like problem solving.

I think that's why I love rock
climbing and being out here,

in the wilderness.

This will just be, kind of,
problem solving and me and Fynn,

there together, we'll
figure it out along the way.

Just tied a knot on the
end of this cord bit
from my climbing rope

and I'm just gonna cinch
a slipknot right down on it

and then gonna tie this
to this branch right here

and try not to fall in.

Okay, bye worm,
catch me some fish.

There it is.

There's my first line.

If there's something in there,
it's gonna eat that worm.

Alright, we're gonna come back
tomorrow and see what we get,

'cause it looks like
it's gonna keep raining.

It's frustrating, I wish we
could've had more time

to try some other methods,

but, we gotta get outta here
and get back to our cave.

NARRATOR: As Lindsey and
Fynn retreat back to camp,

Chad and Axe prepare to
fortify their shelter

against more bad weather.

CHAD: Alright, let
me load you up, Axe.

Break.

Feel like we're gonna have some
rain, possibly snow coming.

Let's go buddy.

And so I just wanna build my
shelter up a little bit more

to prepare for that.

Good boy, break.

Good job, Axe.

You're about to be warm tonight.

NARRATOR: Ominous clouds
building up over the ridge

are a sure sign another winter
storm front is closing in.

Three miles away, and in a
much more exposed location,

the bitterly cold conditions
are getting the best of Paul,

despite his well-honed
survival skills.

PAUL: I know. It's not nice.

You're cold.

Right now I'm between a
rock and a hard place here.

This shelter isn't adequate.

It's not doing a great
job of keeping us dry,

got water coming in the back.

A bunch of spruce
trees that I hacked,

sticking up into my tarp.

When I was preparing
for the challenge,

this was not the shelter
that I had imagined.

I also didn't imagine
putting up a shelter

in a downpour of
rain, slush, sleet.

I need to build
a better shelter,

but I gotta stay close to
the fire to keep it going

'cause Boone needs a fire.

(groans)

♪ ♪

CHAD: So, this is Axe's vest,

this vest triggers Axe
into a service dog mode.

This is, like, his
uniform basically.

Let's go.

His service is to support
me with my levels of PTSD

and stuff that I have.

When his service dog vest is on,

that really binds him where he
operates off formal commands.

Good boy.

He never cuts loose.

This way, buddy.

Bottom line, my butt is hungry,

'cause I haven't eaten
in three days now.

I think I'm gonna try to do some
fishing and catch me some food.

See if I can use this
tree here is a fly rod.

There you go.

What do you think, Axe?

I'm trying to make a fly out of
my shemagh, which is a scarf.

Fly fishing is something
that I do quite a bit.

Fly fishing was a
turning point in my life.

Fly fishing saved my life.

Fighting PTSD, it
did a number on me,

I dealt with trauma situations
in Desert Storm and,

when I came back,

I went through a lot of dark
situations with myself.

It led me into a
homeless situation.

My turning point was,

I had a friend and he
took me to this river

and I was able to see the grass,

the leaves, the trees,
the water.

It slowly brought me back.

She helped me get into a rod and
reel and it made me feel alive.

Fly fishing is a form of
natural medicine that I need

to keep me from unraveling
and dealing with my demons.

Without Axe, it's hard for
me to do this, you know?

Some people can go fishing,
it's simple, you know,

I wish I could do it by myself,
but unfortunately,

I gotta have Axe here
with me to help me.

So, anyway.

I know, but right now,
it's not happening for me.

Let's go back to camp.

NARRATOR: After days
with no protein,

and struggling with the cold,
wet environment,

Chad needs to rely even more
on Axe than he ever has

if he's going to last ten days.

(wind and rain)

LINDSEY (off-screen):
This rain is just relentless.

It's just been, like,
pouring all night long.

It's really (bleep) cold.

Stay there, stay warm.

I haven't eaten barely anything,
gotta make a fire

and I'm out of tea and I
really need something.

Ooh-wee. (bleep) cold!

The weather puts a, literal,
damper on things.

Everything's just so much
harder when it's cold and wet.

My bones are cold, we're
not super psyched right now,

but we will finish this,
won't we Fynny?

Can't back out now.

NARRATOR: Lindsey and Fynn
are not the only team

to have suffered through
another miserable night.

For Paul and Boone...

PAUL: Come on, buddy.

NARRATOR: The dawn
of another freezing,

wet day has the team
at breaking point.

PAUL: I know,
you're cold, I know.

It's like somebody's
punching this tarp

when that snow comes down.

And it's just gonna
get worse from here

'cause I've got
a (bleep) shelter.

(bleep)

This dog is
a family member

and my wife would
never forgive me

if something bad
happened to him.

I would never forgive myself.

I don't know how
long I can make it.

PAUL: I know, you're cold.

I know.

believe I'm saying this.

I misjudged.

Whether or not I can do it,
whether or not we can do it,

I mean, the circumstances
and the weather was the key,

a ten-day challenge to prove
my bush crafting skills,

I learned that, in a
survival situation,

you really have to be more
prepared and, in this case,

I should've looked at
the weather closer

and made a call before this.

I don't know, I think my
pride got into the way,

I just decided that my pride
wasn't enough to keep us going.

And so, we're gonna go home.

NARRATOR: Paul and Boone
eked out a few victories

during their time
in the wilderness;

building a fire, and securing
drinkable water among them,

but in the end, his lack
of a weatherproof shelter

and the brutally cold
and wet weather,

proved too much for Paul's own
survival skills and knowledge.

Now, only halfway
through the challenge,

the two remaining teams find
themselves in dire need of food,

while battling with the
brutal weather conditions.

They have to dig deep and rely
on their mental toughness

if they hope to
make it to the end.

LINDSEY: Here, all over.

NARRATOR: Lindsey and Fynn have
been surviving by foraging

and earn a score of four points.

Chad and Axe's sturdy shelter
gives this team a slight lead,

with a score of five points.

The remaining teams need
to up their food intake

to protect them from
the bitter cold,

leaning on their canine partners

if they hope to make it through
to the end of the challenge.

CHAD (off-screen): (bleep).

CHAD: I was having
another nightmare.

Axe came and...

...he came and woke me up.

I was going down to some
places where I just...

I didn't think I was
going to come back.

Thank God that I have my
battle buddy here, because...

Axe, please stay
close to me, buddy.

(Chad sighs)

CHAD: I feel so low on
energy right now.

I had a bad
nightmare last night,

Axe sensed that and he starts
to lick me to wake me up

and bring me to the present

to know that I'm okay,
he's right here,

what's happening in
my head, it's not real.

I never thought in my life that
I would be this close to a dog,

but, you know, life is strange.

It's, it's really,
it's hard right now,

it's, kind of, like,
a struggle, like, I'm hungry,

but my legs are
very, very sluggish, so,

I'm trying to hydrate myself.

Maybe later I'll be able to
go out and get some fish,

if I still have enough energy.

Maybe I'll try to rely
on my battle buddy,

maybe he can bring
home a winner.

NARRATOR: As temperatures plunge

finding food and staying
warm become all-consuming

Last night's super long storm,

turning into a
blizzard this morning,

has caused me to break down
a bit; mentally, emotionally,

we weren't expecting
this snowstorm.

It's, kind of, pushing us to
the edge, because I'm freezing.

It's dumping snow and it's cold
as (bleep) this is, kind of,

like, hypothermic threatening
and just, kind of, trying to,

literally, survive.

If it's gonna be
like this all day,

I just don't know if
we'll be able to handle it

with what we've got.

Almost out of dry firewood,
checked the line,

nothing on there.

The bait was still there, which
is crazy, I mean, a real bummer.

It's not looking like it's
gonna clear up any time soon

and it's just feeling
a bit dangerous.

You know, I think we need
to weigh all the odds.

LINDSEY (off-screen): I
gotta move my feet, my toes.

My feet are so cold, like,

I'm worried about
frostbite at this point.

If the sun came out
everything would change,

but it really doesn't look
like that's gonna happen today.

I'm on the fence about
what the best decision is.

I'm, like, literally,
starving at this point,

so I think eating could
change the situation.

It would just really be
awesome if we caught something,

come back, cook it on the fire,
just keep the fire ablaze,

eat a little something and
just ride the rest out.

I have all these voices
in my head saying,

"Keep pushing through,"

I'm ready for it
to be over but, you know,

I wanna finish out strong,

I don't wanna finish out
because we had to just fail.

this last bit out.

NARRATOR: Though
overcoming cold and hunger

Lindsey and Fynn's mental
toughness proves unshakable.

LINDSEY: I'm feeling, like,
just the urge to move

and go check my line,

that I put our last worm on.

I'm a little concerned with Fynn

and I have to
keep an eye on him

I was a little apprehensive
to push Fynn to go out there,

but he's such a bad ass dog.

It's really cool to see
Fynn, like, leading the way.

There was a moment there
where I was ready to give up,

but I just couldn't.

It's all due to Fynn,
because if Fynn wasn't here

I just would probably
have tapped out.

Even if he's just sitting there,
he's doing something.

That companionship.

I'm not here alone.

And that's the world to me.

up now, we got a fish and it's,

like, totally a new
sense of confidence.

of the challenge,

CHAD: I'm a little bit hungry,

One of the things about Axe is,
Axe has been born into service.

That's all Axe knows.

I'm not really, for sure, if
Axe even knows how to be a dog.

When I take Axe
service vest off,

I feel vulnerable
and uncomfortable,

but he's my service dog
and I love him to death

and I'm very blessed
and thankful

to have him in my life.

I don't know if I'm able to
let go a lot of control, but...

Let me take your vest off, Axe.

CHAD (off-screen): I'm gonna do
my best to allow him to become

that natural rawness of
what Axe can become.

This is an opportunity
where Axe can be Axe.

It's pretty amazing because
this is my first time

seeing Axe out of his
service dog uniform

and he is actually being a dog.

Axe turned into a survival dog,

we're gonna enjoy
our meal together.

CHAD: Sit.

NARRATOR: This huge salmon,
caught as a team,

is a massive win
for Chad and Axe,

both physically and mentally.

CHAD: Let's go, buddy.

put some nutrients in my system.

the challenge draws to a close,

the two remaining
teams have persevered,

with wildly
different approaches,

but they each drew
great strength

from the bond they
had with their dogs.

Relying on their teammate
to make it to the end.

NARRATOR: Though they may not
have come into the challenge

with formal training,

Lindsey and Fynn tapped into
their survival instincts

and proved they could
adapt to any situation,

working as a team.

LINDSEY: That's awesome.

NARRATOR: These
underdogs dug deep

to weather the storm
and secure food.

Climbing their way to a
score of seven points.

LINDSEY (off-screen):
I'm really proud of Fynn.

Coming out here I feel like he's
reaching his full potential and,

like, a lot of his behaviors
are changing and evolving

and he likes it.

I can tell.

Maybe didn't have all the skills
needed to thrive in this pond

but we found our strength,
that I think I'll just continue

to carry on with me forever.

I led him in and he led us out.

CHAD: Let's go. It's play time.

Axe!

Wow. Come on, buddy.

Here.

NARRATOR: Chad and Axe
had already proven

they can support each other,
sharing a load every day,

but they learned
their relationship

doesn't always have
to be so rigid.

CHAD (off-screen): Let
me take your vest off, Axe.

NARRATOR: When Chad stopped
relying on Axe's service

and allowed him to tap
into his primal instincts.

CHAD (off-screen): Axe, fish!

NARRATOR: Axe secured
food and proved to be an
invaluable survival partner.

Giving them a

making this team the winner.

CHAD: Let's go.

Good boy.

I've been fighting my demons
for so long, but being here,

I was able to see Axe
grow into himself

and I was able to take part
in finding joy in play

and so now, Axe
is a service dog,

but also an adventure partner.

It's a weird balance,
but it's a cool balance

and I'm willing to
explore that with Axe

and now, Axe is
definitely happy.

If he feels good,
I'm feeling good.
