that the kids would be this successful?

- I had a vision it would happen.

I'd like to introduce Janet Jackson.

- [Janet] We had to go to work.

- [Producer] Do they resent it?

- Yes.

- [Janet] My father was
in charge of my life,

my career and he was my manager.

- [Producer] You're
not going to do this

for the rest of your life?

- I want to go to college.

He said you're gonna sing.

You really didn't say no to my father.

- Keep them under control,

and there's no way you can go wrong.

- Oh, no.

- I have to start being independent.

There was no other way I would be able

to kind of get my own
life unless I got married.

- I like a lady that has a soft heart

and is willing to understand
anything no matter what.

It wasn't easy for us to see each other,

being that she was very well
protected by her mom and dad.

You know, who is this
guy? What is he into?

- I eventually learned
that he was into drugs.

I was just incredibly innocent.

- The stunning report
about one of America's

hottest pop stars.

She gave birth to a daughter
and kept it all secret.

- [Reporter] The father,
her first husband,

singer James DeBarge.

- [Reporter] She was supposedly
placed in foster care.

- [Reporter] Does Janet
Jackson have a secret daughter?

(emotional, anxious music)

- For more than three decades,

rumours have swirled that
Janet had a secret daughter

with first husband James DeBarge.

They eloped in 1984, Janet was just 18.

Their marriage lasted one
year before being annulled.

Janet has never said a
word about whether or not

she had a secret baby, but
according to published reports,

the girl's name is René,

and she was raised by
Janet's older sister, Rebbie.

- [Producer] Rumours about
you having James' baby,

are they true?

(Janet exhales)

- [Woman] Rolling.

- [Man] Action!

- I don't even believe
this, I was so terrible.

I was just terrible.

- Oh, please Cleo, you wasn't terrible.

- Leroy, I wasn't even good.

Back in the day, they were saying

that I had a child and I kept it secret.

- Oh people, we got trouble.

These were rumours that were
just flying around, honey,

like hash in a diner. It was... (laughs)

But what was sticking on the
wall was, where was the baby?

Nobody saw a baby,

I mean, she was there with
us all day, every day.

Where was the baby?
What, where, who, where?

- They were saying that I
was raising her daughter.

I couldn't believe it.

- First, they were saying my
niece Brandy was my daughter

and that I gave it to Jackie to raise.

And then, because Randy's
daughter looks so much like me,

then they started saying it was Stevana.

- I don't understand why you're
being so hard on yourself.

- When I was doing "Fame",

a lot of the kids thought I was pregnant

because I had gained weight,

and I had started taking
birth control pills

and back then, you could
pick up weight taking them

and that's what happened to me.

So, that rumour started going around.

(cameras clicking)

I don't like when journalists,

when they try to trip you up like that.

I don't like the weight of
that negativity around me.

I could never keep a
child away from James.

How could I keep a
child from their father?

I could never do that, that's not right.

- I don't know where that
ridiculous idea came from.

It's funny, the rumours,
that's a whole 'nother story.

I mean there's not a time

when I haven't stepped in the food market

and see somebody in my
family on the magazine.

(chuckles) Oh gosh.

(pensive music)

- [Janet] They always
tried to make my brother

seem like some sort of a freak.

- Yeah, I remember seeing
that change happen.

I remember, for me, the
moment that it happened,

'cause we were very
close, we were very close.

We did everything together, everything.

It was "Thriller". That's
when it all started changing.

(tense music)

(indistinct chatter)
(cameras clicking)

- [Reporter] Michael
Jackson's album "Thriller"

has sold more than 70
million copies worldwide.

- [Reporter] "Thriller" earned
him more than $25 million.

- [Reporter] A record
breaking six hit singles.

- [Reporter] The number one solo performer

in the history of the music business.

- Whenever Mike would do an album,

he'd throw me in his car,
and we'd listen to it

from front to back to see what I thought.

I remember really loving
the "Thriller" album,

but for the first time in my life,

that's when I felt it was
different between the two of us.

That a shift was happening.

He would always come in
my room and we'd talk,

and this particular time
he came in my bedroom.

Neither one of us said
a word to each other,

and then he got up and left.

(cameras clicking)

- [Reporter] The story for
the night for the press,

was the frustration backstage
when Michael Jackson declined

to talk to any reporters.

- You can see how Michael feels.

- That's the time where Mike and I

started kind of going our separate ways.

We weren't as close.

And it may have been

just because he was so massive, so huge.

Huge.

- [Producer] When was the last time

you talked to Michael?

- The last time I saw him,

and we were able to talk
together, was over a year ago.

- Over a year ago, seems like a long time.

- Michael is very busy.

- [Reporter] More than
5,000 Michael Jackson fans

stood on Hollywood Boulevard for hours,

waiting for a glimpse of
the mysterious rockstar.

In the end, Michael Jackson
was here for about a minute.

(crowd cheering)

- When you have the last name Jackson,

there's a certain microscope

that they want to use with that.

- [Producer] No matter what you do,

you've got the Jackson name,

you've got the Jackson connections.

What are the disadvantages?

- Well, I think the disadvantage for me

is choosing a friend.

'Cause you don't know

if they're really being your friend for...

Is it who you are or what you are?

Do they just want to be your friend

because you're Janet Jackson,
Michael Jackson's sister?

Or do they want to be your friend

because they really like
you deep down inside?

Your personality?

And I think that's been

one of the hardest things for me to do.

I don't have very many friends.

(somber music)

I wanted my own identity,
but at that time,

my father was in charge of my life,

my career and he was my manager.

There were things that I wanted to do,

and just a direction I
wanted to go in that I...

That I...Like I said, it's hard
to say no to my father,

so in order to do the things
the way I wanted to do it,

I guess he would have to
be out of the picture.

(somber music)

I knew that I had to
take control of my life.

I wanted my own identity.

(dramatic music)

I wanted to go on my own.

Michael has always told me three things,

that's to always practice,
to never give up,

and to have self-confidence
if I want to make it.

I told myself okay I was going
to take another go at this,

but if I take another go
at this, do another album,

I'm gonna have to do it the way I see fit.

The first thing I had to do, I felt,

was to let my father go.

(uneasy music)

- [Interviewer] Surely
it must have hurt you

to have your daughter get out
of your management contract?

- Well, there was a feeling
that came over me. It did hurt.

But when they get a certain
age, there's no need to worry

about nothing 'cause you've done your job,

and they make their own decisions,
whether it's bad or good

and when they need help
in their father,

I will come right back.

- I had to make it happen
at that point, you know?

Like I hadn't made the wrong decision,

the wrong choice.

- [Crew Member] Jessica Davenport,
interview take one. Mark.

- I used to work for Mr. Jackson,
at his production office,

when he managed the
brothers, as well as Janet.

I went to the office,
the doors were locked,

and we were like oh, okay.

Mr. Jackson said he was
no longer the manager,

no longer in business.

I remember Janet being a
little frustrated at that time.

Her heart was somewhere else.

(gentle music)

Janet never really got a
chance to meet the real Joseph.

You know he was funny, he was hilarious,

but he knew that he had to be strict

for the goal that he had for the family.

It's sad. He gave up his fatherhood.

- We were together 10 years ago.

- Yeah. 10 years.

You're looking good, you look real good.

- Thank you. Good to see you.

- I called the house, and he
said the company is no longer.

And he said, you know, "I want you
to go on and be with Janet.

I give you permission to
go on and work with her

and take care of her."

So, I started working for
Janet when she was about 17.

- Janet is one of the
few people in the family

that would stand up to my pop, you know.

Oh yeah, she's tough.

She ain't gonna let anybody
say anything to her.

My father admired her for
being that way I think as well,

you know, because she's always
been a strong individual.

(rotary phone rattling)

- [Janet] I got on the
phone with Jimmy and Terry

and that's when it all began.

- [Crew Member] Jimmy
Jam, interview take one.

(clapboard claps)
- Aaah.

- [Crew Member] Terry
Lewis' interview take one.

- So, Terry and I were
in a band called The Time

and we became the opening
act for Prince on tour.

My first awaRenéss of Janet Jackson was,

her and her mom came to
our show in Long Beach.

At the end of our show,

instead of coming out and taking a bow,

we would come out and basically go "Huh!"

and then grab our dicks, right?

Sorry, this is stupid.

♪ What time is it ♪

We were like, "Wow, should we do it?"

'Cause that's Janet and her
mom are sitting front row.

And of course, we were ignorant,

so we did it like extra hard that night.

(crowd cheering)

- [Prince] See you later. Good night.

- Afterwards, we met Janet backstage.

That was the way we kind
of all got together.

- We had her come to
Minneapolis and we had an idea,

that we could produce Janet in a way

that she hadn't been produced before.

Janet had way more attitude
and feistiness in her

than what we had previously
heard from the other albums.

- It was apparent that nobody
had really asked her opinion

about what she wanted to sing about.

We wanted her to make her record,

and I think it was like
a revelation to her.

(dramatic music)

The "Control" album was really
about what was happening

in her life at that moment

and taking control of her life.

So, she did.

She wanted the best lighting designers,

wardrobe stylists, choreographers.

And I remember she called
Paula Abdul herself,

and the rest is history.

- [Commentator] It's two
minutes 57 seconds left

of the opening period.

- I first got involved
with the Jackson family

when I was the choreographer
of the Laker Girls.

(crowd cheering)

I was noticed by the Jackson brothers

and the brothers told me
Janet wanted to meet with me.

I felt like I'm gonna
be able to nurture her

and just take care of her.

I just loved her off the bat.

I'll never forget coming over

to the family house on Havenhurst.

There would be Michael
bringing in Bubbles.

And I was in love with Bubbles,
Janet wasn't. (chuckles)

And her bedroom was beautiful,
this white canopy bed

and white shag carpeting.

And she'd go, "He stinks, get him out."

And I'd be laughing and
my laugh is alarming

it's like (braying), like
that, I can't help it.

And she's going, "Oh God, oh no."

And it always resulted
in me peeing in my pants.

And I'm not gonna lie, it happened.

Like I would ruin her white
shag carpeting in her bedroom,

from laughing so hard, okay?

Hold one, two, three, four,
brush five, brush six,

pull seven, hip eight, heels one.

When I started working with Janet,

she was extremely shy and soft spoken.

Seven and eight, pull it in.

Cool, let's take it from the top.

She shed some light

into what was going on with
her father, with James.

- Sorry, Paula.

- It wasn't about just
teaching choreography.

It was up to me to kind of
bring her out of her shell.

Yeah what you want to do
though is pull it over

so you're leaning over.

(Janet laughs)

It was so important for me
because it was important for her.

Sorry.

(emotional music)

- She was out of her comfort zone

and it got her excited about it.

So, the Janet that Terry and I myself got,

was a different Janet.

- [Paula] And five and six,
pull seven, and eight, and one, and two-

- Sorry.

- It was important that
this album showed her

as a young woman who is taking the reins.

- Four, five, six, nice and
clean. And one and over two.

- It was me coming into my adulthood

and knowing that out of
all the kids in the world,

I know I'm not alone,

so why not put this down with your music.

- Circle in, left foot, one hit two, up...

And you saw the confidence
build and build and build.

Oh, you went on!

- Those of us who have
been Jackson 5 fans,

we've witnessed Janet growing up.

- "Control" was not only a saving grace,

but for her it was a rights
passage into adulthood.

And that was the master stroke.

- I have such a connection with "Control",

because it was prior to
me being a known artist.

I was in that zone of like,
one day I'm going to do this.

my girlfriends used to
say that to me. (laughs).

I used to get mad at my little sister,

giving these young
ladies such, this attitude.

♪ I never ask for more than I deserve ♪

- "Control" may be all the
way back from the '80s,

but like, when I was 16 years old,

and trying to figure out this industry

and figure out my life, as a woman,

and wanting to take
control, it still resonates.

- You ain't done nothing for

- Last night in Los Angeles,

another member of the
singing Jackson family,

Janet Jackson officially
came into her own.

Janet Jackson's "Control" album

passed the 2 million
mark in sales recently.

Her record company celebrated

by throwing her a double platinum party.

(energetic music)

- [Producer] This is an exciting night

for your little sister, how do you feel?

- I'm very proud of her,
the whole family is.

- She's come a long way,
she's worked very hard

and I think she really deserves it.

- Thank you very much.

- [Reporter] Did you
expect anything like this?

- I knew the album would be successful,

but I didn't think it would
have this much success.

- And the winner is Janet Jackson!

- Janet Jackson!

- Janet Jackson!

(audience cheers)

- This means so much to me, thank you.

- She was on her own,

and she was taking control of her life.

(upbeat music)

- It was a time when Janet's career

and her personal life
were gelling together.

And she was comfortable with that.

René was one of the dancers.

They were like working buddies.

But then I found out they
were actually, you know,

had a relationship.

- He was actually from the film industry,

that's what his family did for a living.

- [René] Here Jan, watch.
Film, film a second.

I needed to just be free
of being with somebody

that did drugs and all of that.

(dog barks)

I needed it. I needed a lift.

- [René] Watch out, Jan,
it's gonna close in on you!

- René was funny, we just
always had fun together,

and he was very, very charming.

(Janet laughing)

(man laughing)

- [Producer] Tell us a little bit

about how you and Janet met.

- Ah, it's interesting.

I was doing a film, a real silly film.

Okay wait, I'm gonna try
something nice, yeah?

- [Janet] What are you doing?

- [René] Slow reveal. Slow reveal.

And a friend called one night and said,

"Do you want to come over
and meet Janet Jackson?"

And we were like, "Yeah
sure, we'd love to."

Janet?

So, we went over to the
house on Havenhurst,

where Michael was living,

and LaToya and the parents
at the time, and we met her.

Who's that?

- Actress.

Come here.

- She was super shy, but
once you get to know her,

she does open up to, not to a
lot of people, but she does.

(waves murmuring)

Oh my God! Who is that?

We became really good friends,

and it just continued from there.

(upbeat music)

♪ They said it wouldn't last ♪

♪ We had to prove them wrong ♪

♪ 'Cause I've learned in the past ♪

♪ That love would never do without you ♪

- Janet is very private, in a lot of ways.

And she was very private

especially with her life, with René.

There's always an underlying
situation that exists,

that you know nothing about.

But she seemed to be happy
to me, she really did.

♪ I've got the feeling it's right ♪

- [Rebbie] René helped
Janet grow in to her own

and flourish as an artist.

(upbeat music)

- [René] Do that same smile.

- Why?

- [René] Because I'm shooting
it in different light.

- They just had a, how do you say?

A focus and aspirations of something

that they wanted to accomplish.

- So stupid.

- [René] Look out towards the light.

- I was surprised. I was blindsided.

I mean, the next thing I find
out she was married. Yeah.

- Mm-hmm.

- We were out on the beach.

It was raining like crazy.

And that's when he asked me to marry him.

- [Producer] When he proposed to you,

did it feel different from James?

- James never proposed to me,

he never gave me a ring
or anything like that,

so it was different.

- [Producer] Did it feel like this was it?

You were gonna be together forever?

- Mm-hmm.

I wanted it to be it.

But I thought that every time.

(rain tapping)

- Jimmy and I were
talking about the outro,

maybe the outro should echo the intro.

- I agree, that might be kind of cool.

- Janet and I have been
friends for 35 years.

You know, since "Control",
when I first met her,

began interviewing her.

I've gone on tours with her,
I wrote a book with Janet.

But what I've written here is,

"The confusion lifts,
the contradictions melt."

"Control" changed the
whole name of the game.

I mean she became a pop star.

- That's very pretty, David.

- But even with all
the success of "Control",

I don't think she ever was really able

to escape Michael's shadow.

(gentle, anxious music)

- Okay, mother, you

They booked me the whole
time I'm there in Milan.

- [René] From the time you get there to-

- Okay, we arrive there 12:05.

- [René] What time do
we have to be in Munich?

publicity tour is a big, big deal.

It's a chance to establish her identity.

And, you know, I'm really glad to have you.

Where are you gonna take it from here?

Are you thinking about maybe
doing something live on stage?

- Well, probably next year
I'll start concert touring,

hopefully in the summer,
that's what we want to do,

and hopefully, I'll be
able to come over here.

- One last question. Can I
ask something about Michael?

About the oxygen tank?

- Listen, they say he has it
at home, I haven't seen it yet.

So, I don't know about that oxygen tank.

- That's all I want to know.

- Every press opportunity that she had,

it was always about Michael
Jackson's little sister,

or how's your big brother?

- [Interviewer] What
is he doing right now?

- Right now he's in the
studio recording his album.

- [Producer] You and
Michael look like twins.

- It was inevitable, I guess.

But she never really
seemed be able to escape it

even with all the success she was having.

because it has opened up a
great deal of doors for me,

having that name,

and at the same time, there's
a great deal of scrutiny

that comes with having that last name.

A certain expectation.

I wanted my own identity,

I didn't want people to
pick up this body of music

because of my last name.

And I remember in the
past journalists asking me

about, you know, success of an album,

how are you gonna follow it up.

But it was really always about
doing what was in my heart

what I felt to do.

- [René] It's Minneapolis at dusk.

I'm tellin' ya I hope someday
we'll look back at this tape

and think about all the
ifs that became a reality.

- Well, hopefully what comes out of it

is a very successful album.

I remember when Janet came to Minneapolis

to start what became "Rhythm Nation",

because there was no "Rhythm Nation" idea

when she first came to Minneapolis.

- I guess there was pressure,

because after you sell 6 million records,

now everybody wants to hear everything.

Everybody wants to have a piece

of what's going on creatively.

- It's a lot of pressure,
it's a lot of work.

And either you can handle it or you can't.

It does affect you, and
what you do with that

really is important.

- We had disagreements.

If she disagreed with something,

she was stubborn, I will say that.

Janet was very stubborn,

but she would still
attempt to do something.

You know how you sang the
first one, the first vocal?

- Yeah.
- Like when you first went in there,

like you had some, a little bit
of oomph happenin' and stuff?

- [Janet] Yeah.

- That's what I need, more
of that kind of thing, okay?

And I think that's the
way I always looked at it.

I never looked at it as an argument

part of the discovery.

Just understanding, you know, the process.

Praise God that Janet
found the groove with us.

I love the creative process.

There's a lot of people

that think I just come into the studio

and I sing a song, but I write.

I write lyrics, I write melodies.

- That just makes it
a little more melodic.

She's talking about crime and
drugs and lack of education.

And that was not the kind of record

that was on the pop charts at the time.

the world that concerned me.

Things that I wanted to say.

- "Rhythm Nation" was
a little bit of a risk.

We knew that making a
socially conscious album

was probably not what the record company

or anybody else was thinking
we should probably be doing.

So, we didn't tell them.

- I remember there was a big
clamouring for her to tour

and I remember her saying,

"I don't feel like I have enough songs.

I need to make more songs,
and then I'll tour."

And I said, okay, well

has to be the biggest
tour ever, in history.

like those words never ever happened.

But the competition to me
was more within herself

to do the best that she could do.

begins at Wembley stadium today.

- I remember when he was in
London, I went to visit him.

I saw so many of Mike's fans,
from all over the world.

- When Janet goes to
England and she sees Michael

on the "Bad" tour, I don't
think she had any idea

it would be as spectacular as it was,

and this blows her mind.

- Seeing Michael
definitely inspired Janet.

She knew that she needed more,

to really become, in her mind,
what would be a real artist.

in concert tonight.

without ever performing in public.

- This is my first tour.

Everyone's been saying this
is really a major tour.

Especially for an artist
going out for the first time,

but I wanted it to be
special for the audience.

I had this dream.

I went out on stage, did the first number,

and I could hear three people
applauding in the audience.

No one had come to the show.

The very next day there
was a long line of cars

down the road and all I
could see were headlights.

- I drove about six hours here.

- And I was wondering where
are these people going?

- [Crowd] We want Janet!

- [Reporter] I'll tell you what,

it's a heck of a scene down here,

we're really looking forward
to the concert tonight.

How you folks doing up
there? You doing all right?

- I've been waiting for this
concert for a long time.

- [Janet] At that moment
I was just so thankful.

for Janet Jackson last night,

she picked up her first ever Grammy

and became the first woman nominated

for the prestigious
Producer of the Year award.

- It didn't feel like, oh my

It was dope.

- The statement that she
was making was powerful,

so her influence is something
that you can't escape.

- Everybody was walking around

dressed like that, imitating it.

- It's like I'm an army of one

and I'm marching through a

She was reaching a very, very
high point in her career,

but what Janet didn't know at the time

is that there would be
major problems ahead.

- New details are emerging
about the police investigation

of pop star Michael Jackson.

- Although we have confirmed

the existence of the investigation,

we have not disclosed any
of the specifics publicly.

- [Reporter] Two of
Michael Jackson's homes

were searched over the weekend.

- [Man] I hope he isn't going
to be tarred and feathered

before there is any
real proof of anything.

- [Reporter] Despite all the controversy

surrounding her brother Michael,

the show must go on for Janet Jackson.

- [Producer] When the allegation came out,

you got tarred with that at the same time.

- Mm-hmm.
