The murder weapon
came from the home.

The killer knew
where this gun
would've been kept.

We started
to piece things
together and say,

"is there
a link here?

Is she
a black widow?"

Scrolled on the card
was the words,

"Alan was first,
you're next.

Run, run, run".

If we don't catch
who this it is,

are we gonna have
another dead body
on our hands?

Every day
in North America,

dozens of people
are murdered.

The key to solving
the toughest of
these homicides,

lies in the final
24 hours of
the victim's life.

To crack the case,

detectives must
reconstruct that
critical timeline,

the minutes and hours
containing evidence

that can help
unlock the mystery,
and catch the killer.

Whitewater,
Colorado,

an outdoorsy paradise
where dreams of
the American west

are still a reality.

Whitewater is
a small, rural town

on the western slope
of Colorado,

just outside
the area of
grand junction.

Whitewater
is a beautiful
area to live.

If you want
a big house

and you want
acres of land,

that's where you go.

You can keep
horses out there.

It's just
breathtaking,

but it's definitely
where the more of
the affluent people live

because it will
cost you to
live out there.

Whitewater was
always very safe.

There was hardly
any, if ever,
any crime.

But on
a beautiful Sunday
morning,

whitewater's
beautiful utopian image
would be shattered.

On June 10th, 2008,

at approximately
11:46 A.M.,

dispatch received
a frantic call from
Miriam helmick,

requesting help,

stating her husband
had been shot.

She told the 911
officer that she was
speaking to,

that she was
administering cpr,

and they were
guiding her
through it.

When first responders
arrived at the house,

they go
straight to work.

They found Alan's body
on the kitchen floor,

and blood
around his head.

At that point,
they realized
there was nothing

they could do
for Alan.

The responding
officers

observed the bullet
wound to the back
of the head

at an angle that
was inconsistent

with a self-inflicted
gunshot wound.

And there was
no gun found
by Alan.

It was clear
that Alan's death
was a homicide.

The victim
is 62-year-old
Alan helmick,

a recently retired
mortgage broker

and father of four.

Alan helmick
is a very successful
business man.

He owns
a lot of property,
a lot of land,

and he's had
a successful
mortgage business

for many,
many years.

In the business world,

he is definitely
a fierce
businessman.

But to those who
are close to him,

he's a big
Teddy bear,
a big softy.

I actually
went to school with
some of his children,

so I knew who
the helmick
family was.

Alan was liked

by just about
everybody that
I knew of.

I did not hear
a negative word about
Alan or his family.

Heading up
the investigation

into Alan helmick's
cold blooded murder,

are detective
Shaun Wells,

and district attorney,
Tammy eret.

Alan is loved.

No one wants
to hurt him.

No one has any
issues with him.

Well, if no one
has any issues
with him,

why is he no
longer with us?

There's gotta
be a reason.

So, as the mesa
county investigators

examine Alan's body,

they notice that
there was no other
trauma to his body,

except for
the single
gunshot wound,

and no exit wound,

which means
that bullet

was still lodged
in Alan's body
at the time.

They did locate
and see a .25 caliber
shell casing

laying near
the body.

They determined,
at that point,

that was more
than likely

the caliber used
to kill Alan,

and that he was
shot at close range,

but not
point-blank range.

The medical examiner
determined that

the bullet
had entered
the right side

of the back of
Alan's head,

and determined
the preliminary time
of death for Alan

had been
between 8:15 A.M.
and 11:15 A.M.

There were
no signs of a struggle,
no signs of fighting.

It appeared that
he was drinking
his coffee,

looking out
a window.

Then, a person
came into the room,

and shot him
from behind.

So, he would never
have seen it coming,

so therefore,
there was
no struggle.

This was
a calculated
execution.

To find
Alan helmick's killer,

investigators will
need to unravel

the final 24 hours
of his life.

They start
by processing
the crime scene.

Interestingly enough,

the crime scene for
what has been reported
as a robbery,

isn't disheveled,

there's not a lot
of broken things.

The house
itself was clean,

except for in
the kitchen.

Drawers were
pulled out,

but all of
the drawers
were pulled out

exactly to
the same length.

So, it made no sense

that this was
somebody going
through the house.

When you start
seeing a lot of items

with value that
are still there,
nothing missing,

you start piecing
that puzzle that

this was probably
a staged-burglary-
gone-wrong scenario.

This is somebody that
their ultimate goal
was the homicide,

and, in order to
try to make it look

like it was
something different,

they staged
the scene.

But because
they didn't know

what an actual
burglary or robbery
look like,

and because
they weren't actually
committing that crime,

it didn't match.

With the crime
scene processed,

investigators turn
their attention to
Alan's wife, Miriam.

They want to know
about both her
and Alan's whereabouts

in the hours
leading up to
the murder.

Miriam says on
June 9, 2008,

at approximately
4:30 P.M.,

Alan had called
his friend, Bob,

and canceled
a golf game

that they had
scheduled on Sunday.

Then, Alan and
Miriam had fed
the horses together.

After dinner,

Miriam had claimed
that Alan drank
a little too much

and they had went
to bed at around
midnight.

According to Miriam,
she left the house

at approximately
8:15 A.M.

To go run various
errands around town.

Miriam said at
about 9:03 A.M.,

she had called
Alan to ask him
a few questions,

but he didn't
answer,

so she left him
a message.

Hi, Alan. Love you.

Um, just wanna
let you know
I'm going to Walmart.

Let's meet at
the Chinese buffet.

Call me,
let me know.

Love ya. Bye.

Miriam
tells investigators

she continued
her errands for
the next two hours,

shopping at
various stores,

but had no luck
getting in touch
with Alan.

It's not like you
to not call me,

so, give me a holler.
Thanks. Bye.

Her
and Alan were going
to meet for lunch

at about 11:00 A.M.
in town.

Right after
eleven o' clock,

she arrives at
the Chinese restaurant,

sits there for
about 15 minutes,
she claims.

She does call
and leave
a message, says,

"I don't know
if you got
my message,

but I'm gonna
go ahead and
head home now."

And so, she leaves
the Chinese food
restaurant

and heads back
to their place
in whitewater.

She comes in
around 11:40-ish

and finds Alan
laying there,

and then places
the phone call
to 911 about 11:46.

As investigators
interview Miriam,

they find
her behavior
suspicious.

I've seen
victims of crime.

I know how they act.

Miriam did not
seem that upset.

Now, granted,
some people
may be in shock.

She didn't
appear to be in
shock either.

When the detective
left the room,

she put her head down,
she covered her face,

and she made,
what appeared to be
a crying noise.

But when she
sat back up to talk,
there were no tears.

I don't believe it.

I don't believe
what she has to say,

and I don't believe
that she's sad.

While investigating

the execution-style
slaying

of retired
mortgage broker,
Alan helmick,

detectives have
honed in on
their first suspect,

Alan's widow,
Miriam.

As you look at
a case such as this,

you look at
the money,

Alan being
a wealthy man,

and you look
at the benefit

that Miriam
may be entitled
to that wealth.

She, of course,
would come into
focus a little more.

Miriam had reported

that she had signed
a prenuptial agreement
with Alan.

That way,
she could prove
to the family

that the marriage
was about love,
not about money.

There was some
documentation

that said
everything that he had
before Miriam

went to his children,

but everything
he had after,
went to Miriam.

Well, they purchased
that whitewater
residence

after they
were married.

They had the horses,

all this stuff that
would go to Miriam.

So, she was
going to benefit.

Despite
this revelation,

Miriam claims
no amount of money

could ever make
her turn on her one,
true love.

Miriam had told
the investigators

that no marriage
is perfect,

but hers and Alan's
was as perfect
as it could get.

They bonded
over the fact that

they both lost
a spouse.

Alan's wife,
Sharon, dying from
a heart attack,

and Miriam's
first husband

who had died
from suicide.

That was really
a wake-up call
for Alan,

and he realized
that he needed
to slow down a bit,

and take time
to smell the roses
and enjoy life.

One of the ways
he decided that

he could honor
Sharon's memory,

was through
ballroom dancing.

Apparently, Sharon
loved to dance,

and so he decided
that he was gonna
take lessons

and learn
how to dance.

And Miriam
happened to be
his instructor.

And after
the first lesson,

I guess
you could say,

it was love
at first sight.

Within
a matter of months,

Alan and Miriam
are married

and move to
whitewater

to start
the next chapter
of their lives.

Alan
and Miriam appeared
to be happy together.

Alan doted
on Miriam.

She appeared
to dote on him.

They were in love.

Alan had bought her
the horses that
she wanted,

so she could start
a horse farm.

He bought her
a dance studio

because she
loved to dance

and teach
dance lessons.

If she wanted it,
he tried to
get it for her.

Despite
the helmick's
love story,

investigators ask
Miriam if she can
support her alibi

for the morning
of June 10th.

When
the investigators
asked Miriam

if she could prove
where she was,

she quickly
handed receipts over
to the stores.

It's a bit
suspicious

that she'd be
able to hand over
those receipts

that quick
at that time.

A lot of times,
you're still
a little bit upset.

It might take you
a little bit to
collect those,

to get them
together.

This was quick.

Miriam handed
those receipts over

and was
ready to go.

To see
if Miriam's alibi
holds up,

investigators
put it to the test.

They verified
with those stores

by getting
the video footage

and verifying
that she herself

was actually
in those stores
at those times.

Her alibi checked out
exactly what she said
she was doing.

She was at every
location just like
she said she was.

The video evidence
matched up,

the receipts
matched up

and her voice mails
matched up.

So, at this point,

it looks like Miriam
has an alibi.

Everything seems
to check out.

It doesn't appear that
she has the means

or opportunity
to have committed
the crime.

With
Miriam eliminated
as a suspect,

detectives
ask her about

anyone with
a grudge
against Alan.

So,
when investigators
asked Miriam

if there is
anybody that would
wanna harm Alan,

Miriam had
suggested

that they look at
his son, Alan Jr.

She said that
Alan and his son

had a troubled
relationship.

Alan had wanted
him to work
in the business,

but Alan Jr.
wanted to do
his own thing

and work in
the tech industry,

but he was still
financially dependent
on his father, Alan.

Investigators learn
there's more

to the father/son
conflict than just
business.

Miriam had stated that Alan sr.
Did not like

how his son,
Alan Jr., was raising
his daughter.

So, he had filed
a court case
against his son,

to get him deemed
as an unfit father.

This could be
a situation that
would lead a person

to do something to
another person.

So, it's another
Avenue to look at...

And investigate.

With his court
case looming,

Alan Jr. had
moved in with
his sister, portia.

Alan had found out

that Alan Jr.
was living at
portia's house,

which he had
paid for.

So, he ran
Alan Jr. off,

and at that point,
Alan Jr. had
ran to Alaska,

and Alan sr.
Had cut him off
financially.

Think about this
for a minute,

your own parent
has taken the step

to have you
declared an unfit
parent yourself.

I mean,
the sense of betrayal,
the humiliation.

Come on,
you're naturally
gonna provoke

some kind of
reaction,

and you know
that that will.

The question is,
how far are they
going to swing back?

With Alan sr.
Out of the way,

you look at
the possibility

that this court case
against Alan Jr.
is gonna collapse,

and he will be able
to get his child.

And that's
a very good motive
for murder.

In the execution-style
murder

of Alan helmick,

police are zeroing in
on a new suspect...

His son, Alan junior.

It was alleged
Alan Jr. was in
the whitewater area

during the time
in question.

So, it really
raises red flags.

Did Alan Jr.
go to the house?

Did he confront
his father?

Was there some sort
of altercation?

So, as an
investigator,

you're definitely
gonna be interested
in finding Alan Jr.,

talking to him,
getting his alibi,

and checking
that out very
thoroughly

to see where he was
on the date and times
in question.

Police track
Alan Jr. down at
his home in Alaska.

He provides
proof that
he was in Alaska

at the time
and date of his
father's death,

and his alibi
stood up.

It was determined
that Alan was where
he said he was,

so, it was
impossible for him

to have had
an opportunity to
kill his father.

At this point
in the investigation,

Alan Jr. is ruled out
as a suspect.

In search
of new leads,

investigators
turn to the autopsy
results.

So,
as the medical
examiner

completed
the autopsy,

he was able to find
a .25 caliber bullet
in Alan's body,

which matched
the .25 caliber
cartridge

at the scene.

The murder weapon
was not at the scene,

but when the family
was interviewed

about weapons
that Alan had had,

one of them
mentioned this
particular gun,

this .25 caliber
that their mother
had had.

She was given
that gun

as part of an estate
of her stepfather.

The investigators
asked Miriam

if she could
locate the gun.

As she
searched for it,

she was unable
to find it.

Police search
their data base

for any information
on the missing
fire arm,

and discover
it was part of
a 20-year old

domestic
violence case,

involving Alan's
first wife's family.

Sharon's stepfather,
who had the gun,

was shooting
at two women

who were running
out of the home,

and he fired into
the front lawn.

Law enforcement
got a metal detector,

went out
to that location,

and sure enough,

the metal
detector pinged.

They dug it up,
there was the bullet

and they compared it
to the bullet
found in Alan,

and, though
the bullet had been
eroded over time,

there was
enough to say,

we think that's
the same gun

that fired those
two bullets.

It's a huge,
huge discovery.

We now know that
the murder weapon
came from the home.

The killer knew
where this gun would
have been kept.

When investigators
asked Miriam

who had access
to the gun,

she stated only
Alan, herself

and Alan's
son-in-law, Jason,

who was staying
with them.

Miriam has
been ruled out
at this point.

Now, we have
a new suspect,

the son-in-law.

Police haul Jason,

who was married
to Alan's daughter,
portia,

down to the station
for questioning.

Alan's son-in-law,
Jason, lived in delta,

but he had just
got a new job

there in
the grand junction,
whitewater area,

and was on call.

And being on call,
he needed to be close.

So, when Alan
and his wife, Miriam,
had found out,

they agreed
to let him
temporarily stay

in their basement
during the week.

And then,
on the weekend,

he'd go back
home to delta

to be with his wife
and children.

As investigators
dig deeper

into the living
arrangements,

they discover
it wasn't the perfect
scenario.

Detectives
dig into how
financially reliant

Jason and portia
were on Alan.

Jason stated
that Alan owned
the home

that he and his wife
lived in,

as well as
50 percent of
portia's business,

Alan's daughter's
business.

And Jason
and portia

were trying to
scrape together

the money to
buy Alan out of
the business.

So, as you
hear that,

there could be
motive that

portia would
inherit the house

and the 50 percent
of the business that
her father owns.

With
Jason's motive
established,

police hone in
on his opportunity.

Jason got up
that morning,

was out of
the house by 6:00.

He drove back
and arrived there

at about 5.30 P.M.
to Alan's house,

when he learned
that Alan was dead.

Investigators
checked his alibi,

they spoke with
co-workers

and it was
determined that

Jason was in
the training
sessions

by multiple people,

and if he would've
got up at any point
to leave,

he would've
been noticed.

He was there
the entire time,

which means
he wasn't in
the house

at the time
the murder occurred.

So, his a alibi
is rock solid.

He is eliminated
as a suspect.

With Jason
ruled out,

investigators
are back at
square one,

and the pressure
to solve the case
is growing.

It's a bit frustrating

when you don't
have those answers
for the community.

You don't have
those answers for
Alan and Miriam.

There is,
quite frankly,

a lot of
sleepless nights.

Whitewater is a very
quiet community.

No one even really
locks their doors
around there.

And then,
to have Alan
shot in the head,

it really
shook people.

People...
People were scared.

There was
a definite
sense of urgency

to figure out
who had done this.

But just
when the case seems
to be going cold,

investigators get
an unexpected break.

The police
get a call from
Miriam's attorneys,

and they say
that a mysterious,
threatening card

has been
left on their
front porch.

They make
arrangements to bring
it to the police

in hopes that
it's possibly a new
lead in the case.

So,
scrolled on the card,
was the words,

"to the grieving
widow,

Alan was first,
you're next.

Run, run, run".

It appears that
we have another
death threat

against
the helmick family.

Now, the stress
of the situation is,

if we don't catch
who this is,

are we gonna have
another dead body
on our hands?

What's gonna
happen next?

When investigators
ask Miriam

if there is anyone
who might hold
a grudge against her,

she quickly
suggests her former
boss, Betty.

The only
person that came to
mind was Betty.

Miriam had stated
that she worked
for Betty

at the dance studio.

Early on in
her and Alan's
relationship,

Betty had tried
to steer Alan
away from Miriam.

Was Betty jealous
of Miriam for
getting Alan?

Is there a reason
or a motive

to wanna kill
Miriam now?

But
when detectives
call Betty

down to the station
for questioning,

she tells a much
different version
of the story.

When investigators
confront Betty,

she is surprised

and said that
she would never
harm Alan

and she never
has had any
problems with Alan.

In fact,
she was trying
to warn Alan

that Miriam
was bad news.

Miriam had
stolen money from
the business

and had charged
personal charges

on a company
credit card.

Betty had stated
that there had been
charges brought,

but the case had
to be dismissed

because
relevant reports

and evidence
had been lost

during
hurricane Katrina.

As we learn
this new information,

it definitely raises
flags for us.

Betty's
statement paints
a different picture

of Alan's
devoted wife.

It's the pivotal
moment of the case

when we're looking
at who she is,

what kind
of thought process
she goes through,

what type of
a person is she?

She pretended
to be this woman
with a huge heart,

but if we looked
a little closer,

we could see
that it was
all about Miriam,

and what
Miriam wanted,

what Miriam needed,
and how was Miriam
gonna get it.

The investigation

into the murder
of Alan helmick,

was on the cusp
of going cold,

until detectives
discovered

his second wife,
Miriam,

stole money from
her former employer.

This new information
has them thinking twice

about Miriam's
behavior since
Alan's death.

Let's see what
we can figure out
about this card

because...
One way or another,

this card's gonna
make or break
her story.

So, law enforcement
called the company
who made the card

and asked where
it was distributed
in Colorado.

The company was
able to give us

three different
locations here
in grand junction.

When
investigators went

and looked at
security footage,

they observed
three people
buy this card.

At 2:06 P.M.
on June 22nd,

Miriam had
purchased
that card.

Why is she
trying to throw
investigators off?

Miriam has an alibi.
She has time stamps,

but you gotta
keep digging,

and come up with
what happened
and why.

At this point,
she goes from
grieving widow

to a possible
suspect again.

Then,
investigators receive
a suspicious call,

which adds
even more fuel
to the fire.

Investigators get a call
from a j.P. Morgan

at Jacksonville,
Florida police
department,

who is Miriam's
half-brother,

and he states
that he has
some information

that may help them.

He tells
investigators that

Miriam's always
been fascinated
with guns

and is a pretty
good shot.

When you see
a firearm homicide,

that's what we call
a one and done,

a single shot,
precision shot

to the back
of the head...

This immediately
suggests that

you're dealing
with somebody
who has a familiarity

and a certain
comfort level
with hand guns.

And as it turns out,
Miriam is familiar
with firearms

and is a pretty
good shot.

And this is
an immediate
red flag.

When
investigators ask

whether Miriam
had ever shown
violent tendencies,

j.p. Makes an even
more alarming
revelation.

The information
is that Miriam's
first husband

had died by
a gunshot wound.

The authorities
had ruled it
a suicide,

but there
were things

that just weren't
sitting right with
investigators.

For instance,
her husband
was left-handed,

but the gun
was found in
his right hand.

Also, the fact that
Miriam claims that
she just woke up

to find him next
to her, dead.

Wouldn't she
have woken from
a gunshot sound?

We started
to piece things
together and say,

"is there a link
here with Miriam?

And is she
a black widow?"

Now,
we wonder what motive
did Miriam have

to kill her
first husband,

and it was found
that she received

his life insurance
pay-out.

So, she benefited
from that.

One thing
we do know about
black widows

is that they
are habitual,
serial offenders.

They are parasites.

They come in,

they acquire
a trusting victim,
kill them,

take their money
and other resources,

but that's
never enough.

There's always
a newer and
shinier target.

Armed with this
new information

about Miriam's
conniving past,

detectives do
a deep dive into
Alan's financials.

Alan was
financially well off.

He never had
any issues
with finances,

so, let's start
checking
his finances,

let's try to find
the motive.

The investigator speak
with the loan officer

and learn that

Alan's money has
been disappearing
pretty quickly,

and that they
have been trying
to contact Alan

for the past
couple of months.

The bank officer
also told
the investigators

that Miriam
had been writing
checks to herself,

even though
she wasn't authorized
on the account.

So, about four days
before Alan's murder,

he had received
a letter from
the bank,

stating that he owed
the bank approximately
$140 000.

When the bank
didn't hear from Alan,

they withdrew
the money out
of his account,

which left him
with a zero balance.

And, as a lot of
black widows are,

they drain
their victims,

they cast them
to the side

and they move on
to the next victim.

Alan would have
figured this out,

and it would
have not been
good for Miriam.

As investigators
look at this,

theories can arise
in these situations.

Maybe
she killed Alan,

so he didn't
catch her

and expose that
she is a liar
and a con artist.

Looking to
strengthen their case
against Miriam

investigators search
for any other
suspicious events

leading up to
Alan's murder...

And make
a shocking discovery.

About
two months prior,

he was a victim
in a possible
attempted murder.

Alan had
came to delta

to meet with
his daughter.

As they were sitting
in the parking lot,

Miriam needed to
go to the restroom,

and as she
went inside,

Alan smelled smoke

and saw in
his rearview mirror

that the back
of his vehicle
was on fire.

As responding officers
arrived on the scene

and looked
at the vehicle,

a wick was found
out of the gas tank.

The wick did not
get in the gas tank
by itself.

You know,
it's pretty convenient

that the car
just happens
to catch fire,

effectively,
the moment that Miriam
enters the building.

I mean, this is
either an uncanny
co-incidence...

And, sort of,
she's touched
by an angel,

uh, or something
nefarious
is going on.

At the time,

investigators
had no lead

as to who attempted
to kill Alan,

but now,
three months later,

the pieces are
falling into place.

Miriam had rented
a movie called
no country for old men,

and in the movie,
the guy created
a wick

and stuck it in
the gas tank

and lit it on fire,
and the car blew up.

So, we were
able to track her
renting that movie

a couple of
days prior

to the wick
being stuck in
the gas tank.

Later, we were able
to take the wick

and we matched
it up to the rope

that Miriam had
in the stables
for her horses,

and it was
the same rope.

At that moment
in time,

I think everybody
knew we have
our person.

So, now, let's go
pick her up.

But by the time
law enforcement

decided to get
a warrant to go
pick her up,

Miriam had already
left the state.

She was gone.

As an investigator,

you do feel that
pressure of
"who's next"?

Is there gonna be
another victim?

It appears
she may have killed
her first husband.

It's looking like
maybe she killed
her second husband.

Is she gonna
kill again?

We've got to
do something
about it.

In the murder of

62-year-old
Alan helmick,

investigators
have uncovered

a trail of cons,
deception

and unexplained
deaths,

all linked
to his wife,
Miriam helmick,

who has packed up
and disappeared.

Knowing they
must catch
this black widow

before she
strikes again,

police launch
a nation
wide manhunt.

We had to try
to find her.

We knew she was
dealing in cash,

so we're probably
not gonna find
any credit swipes

to try to
locate her.

I don't think
she'd necessarily have
the cell phones,

so, we're not
gonna watch her
pinging anywhere.

For weeks,
police do everything
they can

to chase down
Miriam,

but they find
no sign of her.

Investigators
catch a break

when they discover
that Sharon helmick

has just taken
a job in Jacksonville,
Florida.

Problem is,
Sharon is dead.

That kind of
leads you to
suspect that

this is probably
Miriam.

She moves to Florida,

assumes Alan's
deceased wife's name,

gets on a website
called millionaire.Com,

and has moved in

with a new
multi-millionaire
in Florida

who owns several
dance studios.

She went from
her first husband
to Alan,

and immediately
to another
millionaire,

and had already
moved in by the time
we got to her.

The investigators locate
Miriam in Jacksonville.

When they were
able to apprehend
Miriam,

she did not
put up a fight.

It was almost
like she knew
she was caught,

she knew
she was done.

We talked
to the individual
that she had met,

and I told him,
you're one
lucky person

because you were
the next person
on the list for her.

So, I think you
dodged a bullet,
literally.

With
Miriam in custody,

police focus on
breaking her alibi.

Miriam refuses to talk,

but it's not
the end of the story.

You can still
continue to
investigate it.

It just takes
more time and
more man power,

but it can be done.

The initial time
of death by
the medical examiner,

was between
the hours of 8:15 A.M.
and 11:15 A.M.

On June 10th, 2008.

and re-evaluate
what this timeline
could have been

for the time
of death,

and it's determined now

the time of death
more than likely
occurred

between 6:00 A.M.
and 8:15 A.M.
on June 10th.

With this new
information and with
Miriam's alibi,

we can now see that
Jason had already
left for work

and the only
one in the home
was Miriam.

She was the only
one that had
the opportunity

to kill Alan.

Having
broken Miriam's alibi,

investigators
can now piece
together

Alan's final
24 hours.

The breaking point
may have been

when Alan had
discovered that

Miriam was
stealing from him,

and an argument
may have ensued.

And maybe it pushed
Miriam's escalation

to move quicker
to June 10th

because it was
going to implode
very quickly.

Miriam gets up
at about 6:30 A.M.

Jason had already
left for work.

Nobody had
came over,

so, she is
the only one at
home with Alan.

Between 6:30 A.M.
and 8:15 A.M.,

Miriam shoots
Alan with
a .25 caliber pistol

that belonged to
Alan's first wife,
Sharon.

Then,
she opens the drawers

and makes
things appear

that somebody
had broken into
the house.

So, she kills him

and then starts
this alibi process

to get her
out of the house,

and put her at
various locations

that can be
confirmed with
receipts.

At 9:03 A.M.,

Miriam calls Alan
from the Walmart
parking lot.

Once you get
your car serviced,

call me,
let me know.
Love ya. Bye.

At 9:57 A.M.,

Miriam calls
Alan again

and leaves him
a message
about his truck.

Hi, Alan.
Haven't heard from you.

Give me a holler.
Love ya. Bye.

At 10:27 A.M.,
Miriam calls
Alan again,

asking if they're
still gonna meet
up for lunch.

It's not
like you to
not call me,

so, give me a holler.
Thanks. Bye.

At 11:00 A.M.,

Miriam arrives
at the Chinese
restaurant,

where she was
supposedly going to
meet Alan for lunch.

At 11:15 A.M.,
Miriam calls
Alan again

and leaves him
another message

stating now
she's heading home.

The voicemail messages
were too much.

You would hear
some frustration

after leaving
four different
voice mails,

well, she couldn't
escalate, right?

Because she just
killed him.

So, she had to
paint this picture

of "we're so
lovey-dovey,

and we so love
each other

and I would
never do anything
to him."

Miriam
stated she got home
at about 11:40 A.M.,

found Alan
and called 911 at
about 11:46 A.M.

I honestly believe
that she killed
her first husband

and she killed
Alan helmick.

I have no doubt
Miriam would've
killed again

if she was not
apprehended.

I think from day one
of her meeting Alan,

she had a plan.

I just believe
there is evil
in the world...

And that's
Miriam helmick.

Police
charged Miriam
with forgery,

attempted murder,

and the first
degree murder of
her husband, Alan.

When the news
came out about
Alan's death,

and that Miriam
was responsible
for it,

I was taken aback.

I think me
and a lot of
my colleagues...

Couldn't believe it,

but we could.

What did Alan think
when he met Miriam?

That they were
gonna dance off into
the sunset together,

only to have
this brutal,
horrific crime

committed
against him.

When you think
about how uncaring
you would have to be

to do something
like this,

I think
it speaks to me

just how calculated
and machiavellian
she really is.

At trial,
Miriam helmick
is convicted

and sentenced to life
without the possibility
of parole.

The law enforcement
work was stellar
in this case,

and it took
a lot of people,

a lot of
people's effort

to bring one
person to justice.

Timelines can
help solve cases,

and especially
in this situation

where, even if
somebody establishes
an alibi,

you have to
look at that
forensic aspect.

And in this
investigation,

if mesa count
investigators

had not re-examined
that timeline of
Alan's death,

Miriam may have
walked free.

Alan helmick's
loved ones

continue to do
everything they can

to keep his
memory alive.

I would like Alan
to be remembered

as a hard working
business man

that contributed
to his community,

contributed
to his family,

loved his wife,
loved his children

and was a good man
that became a victim.

The take away

to hold your family
and loved ones close,

and be aware of
who is trying to
become your friend,

and be careful.
