Paul Dickopf, a top official
with an apparently clean record,

suggests that he had been
an opponent of the Nazis.

Until 1971 and the Brandt era, he is
West Germany's top criminal investigator.

Anyone who criticized him
or threatened him,

and he also destroyed people like that.

Dickopf doesn't just pursue
a career in West Germany.

In 1968, he becomes the head of Interpol.

to fight international crime.

said at Dickopf's farewell

After Dickopf's death in 1973,

for the obituary of the former president.

he switched sides

Germany's top police officer
provides secret information

from government circles
in Bonn for payment.

Chancellor Willy Brandt and his Ostpolitik

were of particular interest
to the Americans.

Dickopf readily provided information…

like many other Nazis during the Cold War.

They became willing helpers, spies

because the US intelligence services
could use their past to blackmail them.

It rarely bothered the Americans

that certain people that they needed

had been close to
mass murderers, extremists, or terrorists.

The ends justified the means.

The American intelligence services
were fighting a new enemy, communism,

with the help of Nazis
who worked for them as spies.

For them, it wasn't
about punishing criminals.

As the Cold War grew hot,
these Nazi collaborators

became the pawns of western intelligence
services for a variety of reasons.

They were used for covert operations
and this type of thing.

Only now are many intelligence services
files from the Cold War accessible,

documents about Nazis who as agents,
became willing collaborators with the CIA,

such as Eugen Steimle.

His case was previously unknown.

This committed Nazi was in charge
of firing squads in the Soviet Union.

Steimle was presumed dead
at the end of the war,

as one of the victims
of a Lufthansa plane that crashed

on April 20, 1945 near Nuremberg.

with documents and identity cards,

including Steimle's.

The briefcase was taken
to local Nazi Party headquarters.

A few days later,
US troops marched into the area.

The briefcase was confiscated
by the Army's intelligence service.

The Americans were looking for Nazis
they could use for their own purposes.

was useful to them.

They suspected
that Steimle was still alive.

On April 20, 1945, in the middle
of the final battle for Berlin,

the last Lufthansa plane
takes off from Tempelhof.

Following Hitler's demise,
the passengers know

the pact between the Russians
and the West is worthless.

On board the Condor
are more than 20 passengers,

including several men in leather coats.

The captain seeks the cover of darkness.

The weather is bad.

Their destination is Spain
with a stop in Munich for fuel.

at breakfast in the morning.

making a loud rumbling noise."

My friend lives close to here

and in the evening, a burning plane
flew over the roof of her house.

And in a complete panic,
her mother grabbed both children,

and threw herself and them to the floor.

She said, "Your father died in the war.
Now we'll all die together."

The plane crashes in the forest.

None of the passengers survive.

Were high-ranking Nazis trying
to escape to Spain on the Condor?

Who was on board?

The American intelligence services fly
the briefcase and documents to the USA.

The agents in Washington know
the end of the war marks the beginning

of a new chapter in the confrontation
between the superpowers.

To gain an advantage,

they will force former Nazi officers
to work for their organization.

The Americans are successful.

One person in the documents
particularly catches their eye,

the former SS Standartenführer
named Eugen Steimle.

Their research reveals that the man
was responsible for mass murder in Russia.

The agents have reason
to believe he is not dead.

Several witnesses claim
to have seen him after the crash.

Again they question the population
near the site of the crash.

Steimle is a war criminal.

He is very valuable to them.

It was impossible
to systematically recruit Nazis as agents

without also systematically recruiting
war criminals. Those things went together.

The Americans search all over Germany

for the former SS intelligence officer,
Eugen Steimle.

He is hiding in his home region,
the Black Forest.

The noose gets tighter and tighter.

In autumn 1945,
he can see only one way out.

He turns himself in and is interrogated.

He knows he has one last chance.

To tell all.

A defector who has something to hide,

for example, acts of murder,

is open to blackmail,

and is therefore a complaint tool
in the hands of his new handlers.

Steimle collaborates.

His statements
and the documents from the briefcase

help the Americans uncover
the German spy network in Spain.

German industry made arrangements

of losing everything

after Hitler's death
was even more dangerous.

So, they drew up plans.

Some of these documents
and plans still exist.

They had to attempt to reconstitute
Germany after Hitler left.

These activities did not stay hidden
from the Allied intelligence services.

They launched a gigantic
worldwide surveillance operation.

It was code named Safehaven.

Safehaven was the name
of a US government program.

The aim was to track down the assets
that the Nazis had seized in Europe,

assets that the Nazis tried to distribute
throughout the world for use after 1945.

The Americans also knew that such plans
were even hatched in the Reich Chancellery

on the orders of Reichsminister Bormann.

It didn't escape them

that a network of foreign firms
was set up to safely invest the funds.

One preferred location
for the Nazis was Monaco.

There were numerous shell companies
that had millions at their disposal.

One of these firms
was officially a broadcasting company.

Sitting on the board was no stranger,

Kurt Georg Kiesinger.

He became Chancellor of West Germany.

Having worked for the Foreign
and Propaganda Ministry in the Third Reich

did not harm his career.

Allied agents gave detailed reports
about the transfer of the funds.

Sometimes they could even
sneak people into meetings.

Leading this spy operation
was Allen Dulles,

a US agent in Switzerland
and later the head of the CIA.

He knew how to use his knowledge
of the financial machinations of the Nazis

for his career in Washington.

After the Reichsbank
in Berlin is destroyed

in a bombing raid in March 1945
shortly before the end of the war,

gold and currency are lying in the open.

Now the plans are put into actions
and the evacuation begins,

quickly and carefully.

Three hundred and sixty tonnes of gold,
300 tonnes of silver,

and banknotes are loaded up.

Everything is meticulously
recorded and checked.

At the last moment,
the Nazi treasure is taken away.

Documents about the Reichsbank gold
lie undiscovered

in the Bundesbank for over 60 years.

All the gold
from these Reichsbank branches

was moved
to a central location in Merkers,

or to certain depots in Bavaria.

Now the time has come for the Americans.

Thanks to Operation Safehaven,

they know exactly where the gold
is stored in the mountains.

They reach the salt mine
in the Soviet occupied zone of Thuringia,

even before the Soviets do.

They simply declare the Reichsbank gold
to be stolen Nazi gold.

The Americans also retrieve
other treasure stored in the tunnel,

Italian state treasure and gold from
the National Bank of Bohemia and Moravia.

Were the hiding places in the Alps
also cleared out long ago?

They certainly can't find
any gold in Bavaria.

There is a settlement document

stating what gold the Reichsbank
had hidden in various depots.

These depots were all found,
mainly by the Americans.

They even crossed over
into the Soviet zone,

and very quickly cleared the main depot
in Merkers which was in the eastern zone.

Karl Bernd Esser regards this as theft.

Their share of the Marshall Plan,

of American loans
for the reconstruction of Europe,

had been paid twice by the Germans,
first with the Reichsbank gold,

then again
with repayments in Deutsche Marks.

The Marshall Plan was a successful method
invented by the Americans

to surreptitiously trick their friends.

I take 1,000 euros from you
and you don't notice,

then I give you a 1,000-euro loan
on which you pay interest.

Meanwhile, you're thinking,
"Oh, how nice of you."

But, in reality, I stole the 1,000 euros
from you. Only, you didn't notice.

US intelligence also uses
its knowledge and treasure beyond Germany.

It recruits fascists
in Italy during the Cold War.

They are to fight communism
on behalf of the Americans.

Since the 1960s, Italy is shaken
by a series of bomb attacks.

Hundreds of people die.

These acts are first blamed on leftists,

but it has been shown
that they were committed by the far right.

Stefano Delle Chiaie
bcame the leader of the new right.

He is accused of many terrorist attacks
but has never been convicted.

morally and politically for the coup.

Even if I wasn't in Italy at the time.

The commander had prepared a perfect plan.

Basically, he envisaged initiating a chain
of command from the Ministry of Defense.

All our plans were ready and secured.

All military units
would have been deployed,

and they would have occupied
all strategic points in the country.

The fight against the left
has a long history in Italy.

US intelligence services have had
a hand in this from the beginning.

Their influence begins
with the invasion of Sicily.

Allied soldiers overpower the Axis powers.

But some Italian military units
refuse to surrender

and continue fighting
on the German side until 1945.

One unit is particularly feared,

the Decima Flottiglia MAS,

the world's first combat frogman unit.

Their daring operations
are feared and admired by the Allies.

The unit's commander
is Valerio Borghese, the Black Prince.

Prince Borghese's Decima MAS

was probably the best trained

and most motivated unit
of the entire fascist republic.

It takes another two years

before World War II is won in Italy.

When the Americans
finally march into Rome,

they are welcomed as liberators.

This includes the Pope.

He shares the fear of the victors that
there may be a shift to the left in Italy…

because the communists
are gaining in strength.

The goal of the Americans was to keep
the communists out of power

and also to cut off
any communist support from abroad.

CIA agent James Jesus Angleton
prepares a coup

in case the communists win the election.

Angleton knew many people
and had the best connections in Italy.

He spoke Italian
and was close to the Vatican,

which had the most efficient
intelligence service in the world,

and maybe still does.

Angleton and Borghese became good friends.

Borghese came from the fascist movement
and founded the Fronte Nazionale

in order to unite
the various right-wing movements.

All of that was intended
to prevent a shift to the left in Italy,

because the left
was gaining in strength in Italy.

In order to fight
against the Communist Party,

the CIA recruited Borghese.

The communists are his deadly enemies.

At the end of the war,
they almost killed him.

Angleton succeeded
in convincing the US government

that the 1948 elections would lead
to a communist government in Italy.

Therefore, the Americans
should raise millions of dollars

to influence the elections and above all
to fight the left-wing candidates

in these elections.

REICHSBANK

Now Operation Safehaven is paying off.

The Americans use
the confiscated Nazi loot.

Angleton uses it to finance his operations
against the Italian communists.

These assets were never returned
to Nazi victims or their relatives.

of them training.

Among the partisans
are many battle-hardened fascists

from Borghese's combat frogman unit.

The unit is named Gladio and it is
under the sole control of the CIA.

In the event that Italy
democratically voted for socialism,

these paid, ideologically trained
and battle-ready elements

would have taken action to overthrow
that democratically elected government.

But Gladio is not deployed.

The communists lose
the first election after the war.

Emotions run high.

The Soviets have to accept that Italy
is now in the US sphere of influence.

For all those who want a third way,
the term "Yalta" indicates an obstacle.

Yalta refers to the agreement
that was signed by the victorious powers,

more precisely
Russia, Great Britain, and the USA,

who divided the world between them

into future zones of influence,
and above all Europe.

This agreement remained
until the collapse of the Soviet Union

and the fall of the Berlin Wall.

In Italy, Yalta means being
under the influence of the US.

It is clear that if their political
and strategic interests are at stake,

the Americans will take drastic action.

They will not allow a third power
to come between the two blocs.

In the post-Yalta world,

in which borders between the blocs
were strictly enforced,

the dominant hegemonic powers
suppressed all uprisings.

This applies to Hungary in 1956,
June 17, 1953 in Berlin,

and for all other revolts.

And terrorism in Italy and Germany
ultimately served only one purpose,

to stabilize the political status quo.

This includes the murder of the Italian
Prime Minister, Aldo Moro, in 1978.

He was kidnapped
and shot by the Red Brigades.

Numerous agents and intelligence services
were caught up in the affair.

Many Italians believe that Moro was killed
because he wanted to pursue a third way

that countervailed Yalta.

Other powers are also involved
in the attempted coup in 1970.

Borghese and Delle Chiaie are just pawns.

We know of a telephone call to Borghese

between one
and two o'clock in the morning.

That's how the coup was stopped.

We also know that Borghese had a call
with a high-ranking politician.

In his diary, Borghese claims

that he was called by Ettore Bernabei,
a close confidant of Andreotti,

who was acting on his behalf.

And at the time,
Andreotti was the puppet of the Americans.

High-ranking Italian figures
are actually pulling the strings.

Politician Giulio Andreotti
was later Prime Minister seven times.

Licio Gelli was master of the influential
Propaganda Due Masonic lodge.

There, they form alliances
with dictators and make a bid for power.

our convictions become a reality there.

Our struggle for fascism fell on
fertile ground in Latin America.

Likewise, many parties in Latin America
had fascist and National Socialist roots.

However, Chile goes against
the fascist philosophy.

In 1971, the country elects
the socialist Salvador Allende.

Allende has enthusiastic supporters.

His Marxist politics have many enemies,
including in the USA.

This was perceived by the United States
as a tremendous threat.

If a peaceful revolution
were to take hold,

it would greatly weaken the United States'
ideological hold on South America.

On the order
of US Secretary of State Kissinger,

the CIA becomes active in Chile.

This staunch anti-communist
does not want to rely

on Allende losing the next election.

General Pinochet seizes power
in a coup in September 1973.

Italian fascists support him.

The Americans do not stop them.

Both sides have a common goal.

They want to eradicate communism.

We were already in contact
with our Chilean comrades

before the coup in Chile.

I was with Commander Borghese
in Santiago in 1974.

We met President Pinochet,

and began to work closely with him.

When we arrived in Chile,

we were immediately welcomed
by President Pinochet.

In 1975, the fascists gather

for the funeral
of a like-minded friend in Madrid.

The dictator Francisco Franco is dead.

Here, cooperation
between the Italian fascists

and the Chilean intelligence service
DINA is sealed.

Future terrorist plans are hatched.

They planned to take leadership to defeat
the communist movement worldwide.

The scope of this is mind-blowing.

They actually referred
to it as World War III.

Pinochet's junta prepares for this war.

It included their desire
to have nuclear weapons.

It included the production
of biological weapons.

Prisoners in Chile were even killed
in experiments with them

and during the production of poison gas,

sarin and mustard gas.

The research laboratory
used for the inhumane experiments

is the Colonia Dignidad.

Plans are conspired in this strange place.

After the military coup in 1973,
Colonia Dignidad became a torture camp,

a training camp
for the DINA intelligence service,

including a torture school.

It became a weapons smuggling center,

and a center
for alternative weapons production

and an external communications center
for the DINA intelligence service.

This part of Colonia Dignidad
is sealed off with a death strip.

The underground torture chambers
are well hidden.

From outside,
it is meant to look like a typical farm.

Anyone could be deceived by the scenery.

I was impressed by this place

because to a certain extent,

I am obviously a dreamer

and have always dreamed
of building a center like this

for my comrades.

So that now and again
they would have the chance

to get away from the fighting and relax.

I had something like this in mind.

But Colonia Dignidad isn't just
a relaxation center for old Nazis.

Biological and chemical weapons
are produced and tested on prisoners here.

The Chilean intelligence services need
poison that can kill without detection.

There is a short list of people
that were confirmed

to have been murdered
using sarin, using gas.

A German doctor is also working

at Colonia Dignidad
with lethal substances.

The doctor at Colonia Dignidad,
Hartmut Hopp,

who fled from Chilean justice to Krefeld,

had a devil's workshop in this settlement.

Pulling the strings is the German,
Nazi criminal Klaus Barbie.

His fascist companion is very impressed.

I met him in Bolivia.

He had great character,

highly intelligent with immense skills.

A man of honor.

Klaus Barbie was known
as the Butcher of Lyon.

He took brutal and sadistic action
against the Resistance fighters

who were fighting
German occupation in World War II.

After the war, Barbie was recruited
by the American intelligence services.

There were different ways
that senior SS officers survived the war,

but they do share a common pattern,

something that I call
"intelligence entrepreneurism."

They take whatever assets
they can lay their hands on

and attempt to sell these
or to encourage the intelligence services

to invest in them.

Klaus Barbie was a valuable agent
for the Americans.

He bought his freedom with his knowledge
of communists in the Resistance.

The Americans did everything they could

to stop the Resistance people
from coming to power after the war.

And Barbie was important to them

because he had information
on the collaboration network

that worked with the Germans

in the occupied zone
and in Vichy France as well.

He could hand that over to the Americans,
so it was extremely valuable.

He understood very well

how susceptible the entire French
political scene was to blackmail.

The Americans hide Barbie
and other war criminals first in Germany,

then in South America.

They understood the bloody politics

of certain types of intelligence.

They understood colonial war.

Their mentality
was well-suited for colonial war…

because they considered themselves
to be from the outset superior.

Thus, they were willing to take
the lives of a great many people

that they considered to be inferior
for racial or ethnic reasons.

Barbie ends up as an intelligence services
adviser in South America.

At this point, Operation Condor
begins in the Andean states.

The American Operation Condor
was an alliance

between several
intelligence services and states

that were run by fascist
or extreme right-wing parties

with a well-documented history
of disappearances,

abuse, murder of prisoners, and so forth.

And those regimes

found Klaus Barbie to be a very
compatible agent for their operations.

During the operation,

a total of 50,000 people is murdered
in the states of the alliance.

Again the CIA covers up events
and protects those involved.

I call it the "red light,
green light phenomenon."

The United States
was publicly defending human rights.

But privately they were telling
these regimes that it was okay.

Until they defeated the left,
they should go ahead and do it.

The driving force behind this policy
is Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.

He faces increasing criticism.

Later, Kissinger is asked to testify
in court in France and Chile

about human rights abuses.

In 2007,
Uruguay even demanded his extradition.

It became clear
that he was covering for Operation Condor,

the crimes of the death squads.

Again a known Nazi is among them.

Stefano Delle Chiaie leads
a mercenary force in Bolivia.

They were called the Grooms of Death,

and supported the cocaine mafia
that staged the coup in Bolivia

and also benefited from it afterwards.

And they went through
many countries in Latin America,

and instigated counter-revolutions,
murdered and tortured people,

and made a fortune in the process.

The Grooms of Death
are financed by an industry

that is entangled
with intelligence services worldwide,

the cocaine trade.

The drugs trade is
an ideal source of money for agents.

It is all top secret
and those involved can be blackmailed.

The war on drugs is basically
an operation to deceive the public.

The real drugs trade, which is successful
of course, favors those people

given privileged status
by an intelligence service that says,

"These are our men.
You cannot stop what they're doing."

Basically, they can grow
any plants they want

without any risk whatsoever

and ultimately
they can sell them for incredible prices

in America or Europe or wherever.

So they have
an unbelievable profit margin.

And from this profit margin,

the intelligence services
siphon off whatever they require

and it is used
to fund all kinds of operations.

Klaus Barbie perfects
the cocaine trade in Bolivia.

And much more.

Barbie systematized
repression in South America.

He did away with
the simple beatings, brutality,

and introduced systematic torture
and an organized prison system.

In the end, it proved to be his undoing

because people became aware
of him and he was extradited.

In May 1987 in Lyon, Klaus Barbie
is sentenced to life in prison,

four years after his extradition.

Even in the courtroom,
he mocks his victims.

He dies in prison in 1997.

Only a few Nazis are sentenced.

Leading politicians
in West Germany trust Paul Dickopf,

long-standing President
of the Federal Criminal Police Office,

right up to his death.

The SS man and Nazi spy Dickopf
was recruited by the Americans

shortly before the end of the war.

Of course, he realized
that it was all over for Germany.

He saw which way the wind was blowing,

and then said,
"I'm joining the other side right now."

He is helped by his friend
François Genoud, also a Nazi agent.

They know each other from Switzerland,
where they both lived.

Genoud was a major banker.

At the same time, he was
a big supporter of the Nazis and Hitler.

And presumably he was the one

who played a major role

Genoud published Goebbels' diaries
and made a lot of money.

He uses it to finance
the defense of Adolf Eichmann

and Klaus Barbie.

He is also a friend and financial backer
of the terrorist Carlos the Jackal,

and of the Palestinian terrorist
and KGB agent, Wadie Haddad.

He is responsible for many brutal attacks.

But his connections
do not harm Dickopf's career.

On the contrary, the CIA and its director,
Dulles, help him to the top.

First of all, this connection
to the American intelligence services

was a major factor
that helped him find a position.

In spite of his association with the SS,

he found work first in West Germany's
Ministry of the Interior,

then as a section chief

Genoud also financed the attack
on the Israeli Olympic team

in Munich in 1972.

The jubilant games were meant
to establish Germany's global reputation.

Eleven Israeli athletes die

with Middle East terrorist circles

An intelligence service
isn't a singing club.

Many intelligence operations,

which involved war criminals
and fascists as collaborators,
