just one more event to prepare for.

Dick and Angel's friends
from both America and Britain are
coming over for the weekend

and to make it extra special,

they want to offer them
a traditional French Christmas.

They just need to find out
from chateau helper Quentin

exactly what that entails.

Christmas. Yes!

Family time, grown-up time?
Family time always.

On the 24th, at night, we go to
my father's side with 30 people,

all brothers and sisters,
cousins, uncles, everyone.

We keep eating and eating
all night long until midnight.

OK, first course?

Oysters or shrimps.

You have lots of oysters.
Yeah, yeah.

My grandad, he goes pick them,
how you say, pick them up?

They go collecting.
Yeah, they go for the day.

It's a tradition that's been going
on for years and years and years.

I love that you start Christmas
just not on Christmas Day.

The preparation is sometimes
just as fun.

How many oysters each, do you
reckon?

How many oysters do you eat
on Christmas Eve?

Ooh, it would be like 10-20 or...
Each? You'd eat 10?

Each? Yeah. OK.

Liking the sound of the oysters,

Dick's hoping the main course is
a traditional Christmas roast.

That's good.
OK, now where is your turkey?

We are in France,
we don't have turkey. No.

Just beef.

What about Christmas pudding?

What is that?

I don't know that.

No. You've never had it?

Realising that a French Christmas is
rather different from a British one,

Dick quickly checks on
one major component.

Do you have Father Christmas
turn up? Yes.

He always turns up at the house.

Always. Pere Noel?

Yeah, he has the...the bell
and when we hear it,

all the kids are like,
"Oh, he's here!"

and then we welcome him
in the house.

He has a big bag and gives
the presents to all the children.

You have to send a letter.
Pere Noel a letter.

I love it.

Great. Yeah.

Now they know that Santa, or
Pere Noel as he's known in France,

is definitely part of the plan,

Dick and Angel decide that a French
Christmas is the thing to do.

That is lovely, Arthur.
It's good, isn't it?

I got all of the Christmas colour.

And, as Quentin advised, Arthur
and Dorothy are promptly put to work

on their wish list, though
there are terms and conditions.

You have to be very careful
at this stage

cos this is the time of the year

when we have to be
on our absolute best behaviour.

While Arthur keeps his options open,

Dorothy has her eyes on
one particular prize.

There are some issues that the elves
only make a certain number
of different colours.

But Father Christmas will do

I hope it actually gets
to the North Pole.

Right, do we think the fire's fast
enough to get it up to Pere Noel?

Yeah. Yes.

To ensure their letters get
to Pere Noel on time, Dick's decided

to use the traditional smokescreen
postal system.

Up we go.

I sent my letters to
Father Christmas like this,

55 years ago.

I sent it up a little coal fire
in a house in Northern Ireland

when I was your age.

And do you know what?
He got it right!

So this system works.
It's got 50+ years of working.

Letters posted to the pole,

the family's next job is
to pick a tree.

OK, it's not that bad. Let's go.
Ha-ha!

And as they have guests
on their way,

Angel's keen to ensure
it's a good one.

Come on, come on, messy boy.

No-one's allowed to do mud angels.

Right, Mummy. Yeah.

You have to find the perfect tree.

Knowing Angel's high expectations,

Dick tells Dorothy and Arthur
exactly what to look out for.

It has to be bushy,
it has to be high enough,

it has to have a single spike
on the top

and it has to be not too tall,

because that'll touch
the chandeliers.

Angel, though, soon discovers that
picking the perfect pine is

not as straightforward as she hoped.

That's too small.

That's not bad at all.

That's not terrible.

Potentially.

OK, that's no.

Is it tall enough for you?

No, that one's a bit too sparse.

Come on, Mrs, choose your tree.

Did you choose quickly
last time, then?

Luckily, Dorothy can see the wood
for the Christmas trees...

..And finds something

I have to say, baby,
I really like it.

It has a bit of a wildness to it
that is lovely.

We've actually found
our Christmas tree. Hooray!

And once it's wrapped up...

It was like a tree monster.

..it's time to take it home and
begin untangling the fairy lights.

at the chateau,

the decorations are dug out,

and with them,
a whole slew of memories.

They're obviously very special
and they're very cherished.

and every year I smile.

when we actually came to France

for the first time together,

so we've had that ornament
since way before you were born.

I love the fact that this is
a tree of memories.

As Dorothy found the tree,

she has the final say on how well
the baubles are balanced.

The ladies are there,
and the cats and Mummy are there.

Now Dorothy's given them the nod,

the Strawbridge family settle back
to admire their work.

A few days later, Dick's Christmas
present to himself is delivered.

hiring scaffolding to do our roof -

a lot of work to do on the roof.

I've ever had of the chateau roof.

Now he's tested his new toy
to its limits,

Dick's Christmas present proves
itself a towering success.

It's winter and Christmas
is just around the corner.

Dick, though, has a perennial
problem he needs to sort out first.

Right, you went up here last time,
didn't you?

Yeah, yeah.

So we're on our way.

The chateau's enormous
340-square-metre slate roof

is almost the size of
five British ones.

And as most of it is 150 years old,

it comes with at least
five times as many problems.

Local ex-pat Andy is the latest
roofer to visit the chateau.

Right...

Yeah, a few holes.

And that's,
that's the bit I want sorted.

Has it lost its zinc?

I don't know!

Across the countryside of France,

roofs of chateaux like this
are edged in zinc rather than lead.

And on one of this size and age,

there's inevitably quite
a bit of wear and tear.

You can go out of those windows

and climb out with the ladders
if you want to.

Unfortunately,
the only way to find out exactly why

there are holes in the roof
is to have a closer look.

Fortunately, Dick has just bought
the perfect tool for the job.

He just needs to use it
to climb up onto the roof.

Or at least get Andy to.

Nice and easy.

I like the ground.

Dick might not be keen to fix
holes five storeys up...

..but he is excited by their idea
of hosting a French Christmas.

So before their guests
arrive at the weekend...

All right, missus.

..Dick wants to know
their battle plan.

Oh, this is nice. I can't stop
singing Christmas songs.

I loved talking to Quentin
about Christmas.

That to me was something
that was quite exciting.

Our party,
it's a French Christmas, yeah?

But if we're going
to do it as a French celebration

what about...? Oysters.

Oysters! Do you know what
I like most about that?

The idea of the men
going to collect oysters.

I like that idea.
Arthur will love it.

You going maybe with my dad, Papi,
will be hilarious.

I love it.

Another French tradition
at Christmas is the buche de Noel,

or Yule log, which is served
instead of plum pudding.

I see them all the time in
the bakeries around Christmas time.

I've never tasted one,
so I have got no preconceived ideas.

It must be like a nice Swiss roll.

The thing Quentin said,

Pere Noel turning up,
I think, was quite special. Yeah.

The fact that
there's a bell sounding.

You see Arthur and Dorothy
will have no idea.

Dorothy will probably think
it's cows outside or something.

I would hope not!

Now they've established what they
want for their French Christmas,

it then dawns on Dick and Angel

that this will be
their last party of 2019.

We've had an epic year with family.

It has been a year
of celebrations, hasn't it?

I got 60, your dad got 70.

I had 40. Last year.

Last year, still counts.

Are you sort of saying have
a pre Christmas birthday party?

Yeah, I am.

So we'll get everybody together
and party.

But it's going to be French.

A pre-Christmas
French birthday party.

Now the party plans are in place,

Angel's free to fully
focus on festive flourishes

like home-made Santa sacks.

These are going to be for
Arthur and Dorothy's pressies.

There is something about making
something at Christmas time

that's different, and it's
because you kind of know that

it's going to come out every year.

I love it, I love tradition.

Once Angel's made a sack

big enough for even the most
ambitious of wish lists,

she just needs to add
a decorative drawstring.

This bit goes all the way round.

OK, this is good.

Sew this in.

OK...

Fabulous, et voila!

A couple of pompoms, and I'm done.

Down in the kitchen,

Dick is about to launch himself
into unknown territory.

I have never made a buche de Noel.

The traditional buche de Noel, the
French equivalent of our Yule log,

is first made by baking
a thin chocolate sponge.

Then coating it with
a thick layer of butter cream.

To do that bit,
Dick's called in the expert.

When I first met Angel,

she was doing this
three or four times a week.

Three or four times a day.

As Angel used to run
a vintage tea company

and baked dozens of cupcakes
every day...

How much sugar would you like?

Oh, no not that much.

..she does know
a thing or two about icing.

You putting it all in?

OK.

And as soon as the icing's ready,

Dick's keen to lend a hand.

You can, seriously, don't do it.

That is amazing.

are busy getting the chateau ready
for their Christmas celebrations.

sellotaped them together,

As Dick's keen to serve oysters
at their French feast,

he's brought Arthur and Papi Steve
on a 240-mile round trip

to Penestin on the Brittany coast.

Do you know what? This is just
a lovely thing to be doing.

He's going to be happy.

freeze a little bit

In France, collecting oysters on a
cold, windy coastline at Christmas

has for decades been traditionally,
and gladly, delegated to the men.

Seeing the girls in panda suits
together, it's melting my heart.

I think the special treat for me
was getting the kitchen done.

Oh, yes. And then having Arthur and
James, my two big boys,

just, sort of, in there working and
together. It was hilarious.

with his pompoms,

and inspect their handiwork.

It's Christmas and tonight an extra
special French festive

feast will be served at the chateau.

OK, Arthur what we're going to do is
we're going to prep these.

That is garlic, butter, breadcrumbs
and a little bit of parsley

and the top will go crispy
if we put it in the grill.

Yes, yes, see!

Helping Dick prepare the traditional
hors d'oeuvre of oysters

are Arthur and Johnny.

I can scrub and I'll bring them to
you ad you can start shucking.

And then Arthur can dress them
and put them on there.

First lot, first lot, Daddy's on!

That now, I want you to do,

so we can then grill it.

having a bit of a birthday party

Meanwhile, upstairs, Angel's about
to transform their family dining

table into a feast for the eyes.

As I was walking down to the domes,
ah, there was this most beautiful

trunk, with all this moss and I'm
like, "That's going on my table!"

Tonight is really,
it's all about food and family

and just being together.

It's cheesy, but it's true!

And I'm going to keep it quite
simple.

Well, I say that but...

We put the plates down first.

Now Angel can see where the
plates will be,

she can start creating her
seasonal centrepiece.

A lot of these are kind
of like really,

really dried flowers that I've
got from the garden.

There's still a real charm to them,
I like them a lot.

Old books are used to add height
and Angel's personal herd of deer...

My trusted old does!

..help create an enchanting
table setting.

To complete her winter wonderland,
a light dusting of snow

and a little bit of fun.

But, like everything Angel does,
there's always a personal touch.

So everybody has been made
a little animal.

Very cute.

They can take this away as a memory.

Quentin helped me with this wording,

which means kind of, "Happy Birthday
of Christmas".

So, it does mean the right thing.

By 8pm, everyone's dressed
in their finest.

Dick and Angel though prefer to
serve it as an

eggnog-style aperitif.

An hour later, Dick, Angel

and their guests retire to the
salon

And, tonight, Christmas is not
the only thing being celebrated.
