all 45 rooms,

including four sumptuous guest
suites

for their wedding and events
business.

But despite their hard work, their
dream often resembled a nightmare.

the sky out of your roof.

Behind every romantic story
is the reality.

This year, life at the chateau
has been rather different.

weddings and events to house...

This year at the chateau, endlessly
long, hot summer days have provided

a cornucopia of fresh fruit
and vegetables in the walled garden.

Oh, look at that! That is
absolutely so juicy.

They're not bad, are they?

That was a slightly soft one.

I just had the sweetest one
and then got relaxed

and had the tangiest one that is
still making my...

...back of my throat clench up.

Once feeding
the chateau's previous owners,

the Baglioni family, now the
Strawbridges

reap the garden's rewards.

I'm going to cut a little
bit of this rainbow chard for dinner

These leeks are nearly
ready as well. They look amazing.

See, those are massive, look?
They smell, I can't tell you,

absolutely amazing. It's all tomato
plants, isn't it? It's just amazing.

You planted them with me.

Well, in that case, this is all
your work, nothing to do with Daddy.

Summer is normally
the chateau's busiest

time of the year,
buzzing with weddings and events.

A 150-year-old chateau demands
upkeep on a grand scale.

So, this year, without their usual
guests, Dick and Angel have

had time to draw up a super-sized
to-do list.

But, to realise it, Dick needs a
bigger workshop,

and he's decided to transform this
abandoned outbuilding

back into a productive 34 square
metre workshop.

Right...

Oh, it's big.

It's a good size workshop, yeah?

But think of Mademoiselle Daisy...
Mm-hm?

...because that's probably the
biggest thing I want to work on.

We could put her nose there, she
comes all the way back to here, yeah?

And I have to be able to
work in the winter inside.

What areas are you going to use?
All of it.

Because if you're going to drive
cars in,

are you going to have a big middle
island

so you can put things on, or...?

No, genuinely... We don't have
islands. We don't have islands. OK.

What I'm going to do,
that wall will have stuff,

benches along it,
little bit of space.

But it has to be enough space to
get down the side of it.

On this side, this is wide enough to
have something here. Yeah.

A lathe or something like that.

But I have to really
get my head around that,

because I don't intend to spend much
money on the infrastructure.

It'lljust be pallets and bits and
pieces

and dead things we've got around the
place.

And what I would like to do is make
sure that upstairs is emptied. OK.

This is all perfectly safe. OK.

This is quite exciting.

Five years ago, it was the attic
on the top floor of the chateau

that gave up its secrets to Angel.
One, two, three... Wow!

Now, this looks like wallpaper.

But here in the outbuilding,

are there still more
surprises to be shared?

It's obviously where
they just dumped all the rubbish.

Dick may just see
piles of junk abandoned

by the Baglionis, but to Angel,
it's a room of undiscovered riches.

That's not rubbish!

It's been a long, hot summer
at the chateau,

and Dick and Angel have decided it's
time for a family trip to the beach.

But this year, it's much closer
to home than expected.

Oh, Petale knows where we're going.
Lead on, Petale.

In fact, just a few metres away.

It's lovely down there, by the way.
You can go right into the corner.

It's lovely. Honestly.

The water in the 2,000 square metre
moat that surrounds their home

is now so low
that it's revealing

some previously hidden
bits of chateau history.

We've never, ever seen it like this.

Do you know why that's
all cobbled like that, Arthur?

So they could back a cart in here

when they were
filling things up with water.

That's what we were told.
Is that right, Mammy? Yeah, it is.

Further along the moat,
another little beach has emerged.

Petale, the family's nine-month-old
Kerry Blue, leads the way.

Remember we played conkers
last year?

I won the world championship,
that's right,

because I'm 61 and you're not.

Down we go. This is a life beach.

Do you know what, it's really,
really interesting here. Yeah?

Have a look at this ground.
I know. It feels...

It feels like this isn't
just where the water's low.

It feels like this was something.
But hold on.

This is the same gravel that was
outside the front of the chateau

when we arrived.

It looks like it's a little alcove.
Yeah.

You'll probably find a little punt.

The picture we saw,
was it an Edwardian picture,

with the two people on a punt? Yeah.

The place they would have
probably put it is here.

The chateau was completed in 1874

as a place for
wining, dining and boating.

Dick and Angel have always wondered
where the launch spot was.

And it looks as though
they may have found it.

I love that idea.

But cobblestones and gravel beaches
aren't the only surprise.

Are these clams?
Yeah, freshwater clams.

They look really, really old.

Oh, thanks, babes.

This is where the heron hangs out.
On that rock.

With new beaches and rocks exposed,

Dick decides it's the perfect
opportunity to claim new territory.

At least
until the autumn rains arrive.

Uh-oh.

I'm on this island.

No, I'm not going to. What?

Daddy is going to Heron Island.

Oh, quick, before we go!

That looks a bit slippy
now it's wet.

No, look, right. Daddy's going

for the Strawbridge family.

Swampy DaddY-

A few clays later, and Heron Island
all but a distant memory,

everything that was
upstairs in the old outbuilding,

soon to be Dick's new
workshop, is down.

I think over there is
definitely our keep pile.

And it's time to sort the wheat from
the chaff before Dick skips the lot.

This has been such a big job.

I mean, getting it all down has been
like a job in itself, and...

Sasha's been helping out, and it's
been really, really, really fun.

Because, you know,
we all love this place.

Angel's determined to rescue
everything she considers

historical, sentimental,
beautiful or just simply quirky.

That is amazing.

I have no idea,

but I just love the fact that it's
got a bit of beauty to it still.

Oh, look at this. Hello. Oh,
goodness. I've no idea what it is.

I think it's
something to do with a games table.

I think it's gorgeous.

In the 19th century, billiard tables
were the height of fashion.

One with elaborately decorated
iron ball catchers like this

would be worth about £20,000 today.

If that was on a billiard table
or something, well,

that's quite posh, isn't it?

By anyone's standard.

Unfortunately, the chateau's version
now appears to be in kit form.

These remind me of sort of,
you know, the roll-top bath feet.

But an antique games table

isn't the only thing
that makes Angel's heart sing.

Look at that.
That is just beautiful.

And, towards the end of the day,

Angel unearths something
utterly unique.

We have found loads of lovely
things in here, you know.

Little insights into how they lived.

But this, this is
something that is priceless.

It's absolutely priceless.

Dun dun-dun! And it is...

It's their running costs.

What they ate, what they spent their
money on. This is how they lived!

The Baglionis clearly kept
close tabs on expenses

during their reign at the chateau.

I mean, look at this. This is crazy.

I mean, every bit of money
that they spent.

Biscuits fromage,
cheese biscuits. Grenadine.

Champagne, something here.

Oh, it's so exciting,
because it goes on for years.

What's exciting is that

there's still outbuildings
we haven't delved into.

I know I've said it before, but
actually, I don't want this to end.

I don't want to stop, you know,
the excitement.

I'm still going to find something.

And this has been better than
I could have ever, ever expected.

Work on Dick's new workshop
is about to begin.

Once builder mate Steve

has removed the surprisingly
tenacious 150-year-old steps.

CREAKING

Across the courtyard,

Angel has been delving
deep into the chateau's past.

And she's summoned Dick
to share her discoveries.

It's a piece of history
that was in the basket

that I think you're going to love.

This is the accounts book for
the house? Yeah, look. For ham.

That's a big number. Or beef. Beef!

That's two. That's for two boeufs.
God, that's really expensive.

That two cows, that's two steer.
Oh, OK, that's different.

That's a lot of meat.

Every single one of these pages
tells a story.

Finding the chateau's
accounts book is one thing.

Discovering a personal letter hidden
within its pages quite another.

There's a letter that
was at the front of this. 1870.

This is the memoirs of
Amil de Baglion de la Dufferie.

OK.

As soon as she found the letter,
Angel had it translated,

and what it's revealed about
the aristocratic Baglioni family

is quite extraordinary.

It's really hard to read
comments like your writing.

So it says,
I'll put it in a nutshell.

This is how they've become
the Baglionis,

and it's absolutely fascinating.

This is the stuff that you love,
I know it is.

Baglioni. The family...
We knew they were from Perugia.

Came to take refuge in the...

Which is where we are here. That's
it, yeah. 600 years ago. Yeah.

Which is when they landed here.

When the Duke of Anjou
lost the kingdom of Naples,

Michel Baglion, knight,
lord of the Dufferie...

Yeah... came back with him
and received...

They gave him Mayenne.
They just gave him Mayenne.

You know, as you do.

But the 15th century Italian knight
Michel de Baglion's loyalty

wasn't just rewarded
with some land in France.

The family also received
a new coat of arms

and a surprisingly
appropriate motto.

And the motto "omne solum
forti patria est".

Yeah? "Every land
is home to the brave man".

I love that. I love that.

It's quite special.

CLUCKING

Back in the abandoned store room,
and with the steps removed,

Dick's breathing new life
into the building with gusto.

Today's task, transforming some old
solid wood doors into new

solid wood workbenches.

I need a workshop
to build my workshop.

Providing the muscle
is their French helper Contin.

Oui, Contin!

Allez, allez, turn this one over.

I have absolutely no idea
where this door came from.

It's been somewhere
in a building at some stage.

It was just lying around the place,
so at this stage,

we're now repurposing it.

Never one for wasting the pennies,

nor particularly concerned
with designer good looks,

Dick's determined to
build his workshop just out of bits

and pieces from around the chateau.

Everything in a workshop is heavy.
So, we're going in that way.

You go in the corner.

Right, on the top.

We'll have to get it level.
I like it.

That will work.

After months of summer sun,
the walled garden,

designed for maximum productivity,
is bursting with edible delights.

I somehow managed to get
this in Dorothy,

because it's called rainbow chard.
And you know what?

I've learned a lot this summer.

I know that when you cut this
with your knife, Dick's knife,

you leave the outer leaves on.

No idea why, but you do.

And it leaves
a lovely little pattern inside.

And with one crop
in particular abundance...

Here we go.

...there's important work to be done.

I want this filled with grapes. OK.

We're into grape juicery.

You can eat any you want.

This is called the grape perks.

Do you think that we'll take
the kids one day to do treading it

with their feet?

You take your shoes off
and you go and you stamp on them

to squish them all up.

It feels a bit weird
in between your toes.

...is a thirst-quenching end
to a long summer's day.

Mm.

That's lovely. Oh, Dorothy, look.

It's a little ladybird.

It's trying to fly away.

It's getting ready to go.
Yay, and it's away.

Dick and Angel's chateau
may have 45 rooms,

12 acres of land
and seven outbuildings,

but it didn't have, in Dick's eyes,
a decent-sized workshop.

This has got to go up.

And put your corner up.

A place to tackle the giant jobs
a home of this scale demands.

As well as finding a bit of peace
and quiet.

Woodwork,

metalwork, projects.

Good. Bar.

And one glance at Dick's old
workshop in the chateau

proves exactly why
he needs a new bigger one.

It does, though, have buried,
under several strata of bits

and bobs,
a worktop almost four metres long.

This has not been clear
since the first week it went up.

It's just a matter of locating it.

I'm looking forward
to finding things

I haven't seen for a long time.

Ta-da!

Slide it back so it doesn't
come off there. Oh!

Oh! It's heavy.

You made a funny noise
there, Quentin.

This is nice and solid, isn't it?

Do you know what's really sad?

All the screwdrivers are over
in the other place.

Dick, though,
isn't the only one into recycling.

Angel's heading up to her workroom -
the treasury -

the place she finds inspiration
and where she can begin to rescue

the Victorian clothes dryer
from the workshop clear-out.

We found so many treasures
upstairs in the attic.

I know it totally looked like junk
but as we were

kind of rummaging through
there's fires,

there's bits of utility.

Victorian air dryers are a useful

bit of equipment that I think look
quite attractive, actually.

And Angel reckons she has enough
of the original wooden slats

to remake this one - or at least
most of it.

I don't know. Normally you have
about four or six kind of slats,

but this one definitely had six,

however two of them
were totally ruined -

they were gone - and I was trying
to find something that would give me

just a little, you know, bit
of height variation and I couldn't

find anything and then the moment,
the moment -

one of these cut in half.

Bringing the dryer back to life
requires a bit of jiggery-pokery.

I'm going to g0...

Now, Dick can hang tools or cables.
You know it is going to be useful.

I just am excited that
it's from that room.

All Angel has to do now
is bolt it together

and attach the new
rope for the pulley.

It's exactly the same
kind of mechanism for a Roman blind

that I did in the boat.

You get your two
sort of little eyelets,

you have your one string going up
and you have your two string

going up and when you pull them
both it goes up and down.

I mean, it's very simple,
very clever and very effective.

But as it's a secret gift for Dick,

Angel's been keeping
her plans to herself.

I did have to ask Dick for a load
of coach bolts and he did look at me

like, "What are you doing?"

I love it and I love the fact that
it's come from the house

and that we're still finding things,

you know. We're five years on
and, you know, I know I've said it

before but I never,
ever want to stop finding things.

I am excited to sort of give him
something that I've done.

Right, that is good.
That is going to change his life.

Outside, Dick and builder mate
Steve's latest challenge

is to fit two new doors
to the workshop entrance.

First, though,
they need to remove the old ones -

or at least what remains of them.
There's this one.

Down we go.

But its 150-year-old hinges
are in surprisingly good nick.

I want to use the same
hinges on the same hinge posts

because, you know, they're strong
and why reinvent the wheel?

These doors are designed... The
gates that were there initially -

watch - they go all the way
round out of the way.

Out of the way, yes. That is why
they are that shape.

While Dick strengthens
the 19th-century brackets

with a bit of 21st-century welding,
builder mate Steve

starts building
the frame for the new doors -

using the old ones as a template.

Just take five mil off these.

As they're both working off
the remnants of the original doors,

all Dick and Steve can hope
for is that the original Victorian

carpenters got their sums right.

OK, that's good enough for me.

Now Dick's new workshop
is taking shape,

Angel has more plans
to accessorise it

and to do that she needs the expert
skills of Arthur and Dorothy.

Daddy has got a new workshop, OK?

And I think you would quite like
to put something in there

that you have made.

Something that Daddy uses
all the time. Tape! Tape.

I know, for absolutely everything.

As there are different
types of tape,

a multidiscipline dispenser
is needed.

Luckily, Arthur and Dorothy have
the tools as well as the know-how.

It would be great if we could have
a dial all the way through.

hole lined up all the way

through from one end to the other?

So, while Arthur concentrates
on the integrity of the structure...

I'm loving it.

...six-year-old Dorothy is keen
to give it a personal touch.

And, following in his father's
engineering footsteps,

Arthur's soon preparing
the topping-out ceremony.

I think Daddy's going to love it.

Arthur and Dorothy's work
may be done, but up in her attic

workroom Angel has a bit of extra
engineering to do.

The kids have done a lovely job.

I mean, it's cute and the hacksaw
is just going to make this really,

really useful.

Glueing on a hacksaw blade
will not only make the perfect

serrated edge but also
the dispenser indispensable.

When you can't find something that
you know where it is it is very,

very frustrating.

I'm just quite happy that
Dick is going to have

a space that is going
to be organised.

At the moment, though,

Dick has other more pressing things
on his mind...

...like trying to make super-sized
doors from a 150-year-old template.

So, that's going to start like this.

Yep, we've got
to do what we've got to do.

Soon, Dick's freshly-cut doors
are ready for a fitting.

Awaiting their hinges,
Dick is almost positive that

a piece of four by two will hold
the enormous freestanding doors.

Dick may be in charge
of construction,

but Angel is definitely in charge
of aesthetics and door paint.

So, on the hunt
for suitable colours,

Angel has ventured into
Dick's labyrinthine workshop.

This is the workshop cleared out.

Honestly, it's full over there.

Ah.

I have not seen this before.

I didn't even know
it was behind here

because there's been stuff actually
on here, and this is lovely.

This is a wallpaper that
I haven't got in the scraps.

Over the past five years,
Angel's collected 76 different

antique wallpaper
designs from around the chateau.

She's now just found her 77th.

I know, to most people,
this is just junk, but, you know,

I've been trying to preserve all
the wallpaper because it feels like

that's sort of the historical

kind of design of the house, and I
love it. I've been obsessed with it.

And I haven't got this and I haven't
seen it and the first time

I see it it's got loads of holes
in it and green spray paint.

He won't remember where
this is from now.

The battle to get Dick's super-size
doors into the super-size doorway...

All right, Steve.

...is almost won.

All right for tightness? Yeah, good.

See if this door opener falls off.

Ladies and gentlemen...

That was easy.

With the doors finally up,

Dick's attention can
move from the outside to the inside.

A few clays later,
with all hands to the pump,

a functioning workshop is emerging.

Dick's been busy cooking up
crafty storage solutions.

This is a muffin dish and the whole
thing is getting another life

out of it,
and that's what Angela does.

What we do with our things
that we find is to give them

another lease of life. There you go.

Nice little storage area.

Six little pots for storing
things in. job done.

What he hasn't counted on, though,

is that Angel has her own ideas for
unusual ways of keeping things tidy.

It's an air dryer. It's
the one that we found. It's a gift.

That's nice.

I can put my welding masks, my
chainsaw masks, my chainsaw suits...

Yeah, exactly... and various bits
and pieces can hang from up high.

Angel has already spotted

and makes a beeline for Dick's
box of string and twine.

And the stringer, the wooden side
support of the old stairs,

provides the perfect clutter buster.

They're not related -
it being a stringer and a string.

in his own workshop,

Dick's keen to show off his
ingenious use of plumber's piping.

This is the charging station

in what Dick's got hidden under

the trolley he's been making.

Dick decides it's time

for the Victorian laundry rack
to be launched into its new life...

As dusk falls at the chateau,

and with his new workshop, after a
lot of hard graft,

I don't think I've got many excuses

What was once an abandoned
outbuilding,

left uncared for and forgotten for

...is now once again a productive
part of chateau life.

A workshop that will be vital

if Dick and Angel are to tackle the
biggest jobs

on their never-ending to-do list.

That's not just a cleaning roll
holder,

that's one made by my big boy James
George.

He made that when he was a little
bit older than Arthur is now.

It's all part of the memories that
come together in your workshop,

cos it doesn't matter where you look
in here, there's a lot of history.

It's not quite straight, it's been bent

Dick's new workshop is designed to
tackle tasks big and small.

This was in our downstairs kitchen.

Broken glass on it and little
electromagnetics here.

When you put current across them, up
comes the indicator.

It says what room somebody wants you
in.

There's even a little telephone on
it.

The chap upstairs will say, "Bring
up my gin and tonic,"

and bzz! Ding. He's in the salon,
he's in the other room,

and that has to be brought back to
life at some stage.

What I have to do now is put a
combination lock on

and let nobody in,

cos this is very definitely my
special place.

I love it, yeah.

I've waited a long time for this.

In the chateau,

Angel, inspired by the Baglionis'
19th-century ledger,

is keen to celebrate Dick's new
domain with flavours from the past.

I am the queen cocktail-maker in our
house.

When we were reading the book, I
just loved it with so much grenadine,

and always quite near it, there was
the orange blossom water.

Now, I don't know if they actually
put them together.

I thought, "You know what? I'm going
to try that."

I just want to see where I am with
my taste.

Oh, that is amazing.

So, I just think that if we were
going to nibble on anything

with our grenadine punch,

it's going to be lady's fingers.
