It's summer at the chateau

and the water lilies that Dick
and Angel recently

planted are beginning to bloom.

Inspired by their earlier visit to
Monet's house in Giverny,

the chateau's moat now has its very
own collection of lily pads.

But watch I'm going to put
a little bit of ochre. Watch.

Dick, Angel, Arthur and Dorothy have
decided to celebrate the new

lilies with a mini
tribute to the artist himself.

Do you remember Monet? Yeah.
What sort of pictures did he do?

What do you call them, Arthur?
Fuzzies.

The fuzzies, yeah.

Hoping to improve on Monet's
"fuzzy paintings",

the family focus on making their own
Strawbridge versions.

Don't forget the lilies.

Sorry but there can't be

The thing is you can dot some lily
pads on the top of it.

Enjoying a rare afternoon off work,

Dick and Angel are determined to
make the most it.

celebrate their 50th wedding

anniversary, Angel would like to
give them the party of a lifetime.

A chance for them to reunite with

they left behind in Britain.

Really lovely. I'm really excited to
show everyone like

Cafe Grandma and the house and you

And this party's going to be extra
special,

because, 50 years ago, Jenny and
Steve's big day was a much smaller

and more spontaneous affair.

I never really said it to you but
it's kind of cool that you eloped!

What did you wear
on your wedding day?

You wore a really nice.
I had a mohair suit.

It actually had a slight
shine on it.

Oh, dad that's right up your street.

And my outfit came from C&A's.
Brilliant!

As Angel's also hosting 37 other
events at the chateau this year,

being ultra-organized is a must.

Is that all your paperwork, can I
just have a little look? Mm.

But this time, she's having to adapt
a tad more than usual,

mainly because Steve's in charge
of the guest-list.

It would be very nice if I could
get, if the two Pats could come.

What about Alan, my friend Alan?

He just keeps adding other ones. No
they're on the list, aren't they?

Where? Erm...

OK, so I'm not perfect, it seems.

Mum how have you coped? You mean
with the list or Dad?

The big thing is, we can't hold more
than 80 people in the Orangery

for a sit down meal and let me
tell you you're up to 77 people

and that's without Arthur
and Dorothy.

So, if we don't do the sit down meal
in the Orangery,

I think it will be quite refreshing,
I think we'll do something similar

to what we did at our wedding,
like petit plats.

That's what I thought.
I would love that.

It's a party for the family and
friends. It's a celebration.

It's informal, it's not a formal
thing, is it? No.

While Angel works out the logistics
of her parents' party,

Dick's on a very different mission.

He's spotted a bargain - 400 miles
away, in South Wales.

Transport manager Nev is selling a
type of vehicle

that Dick has long-admired.

There's your new baby, there's your
new baby.

That is absolutely gorgeous!

The Asquith Mascot bus was built in
the 1980s,

using the chassis of a Transit van.

It's a head-turner.

Angela's going to be so impressed.

More recently, this one's been
used as a wedding car

and Dick is utterly smitten.

It looks in very good nick.

It is - one careful owner.

The other 25 didn't give a damn!

Rear door.

It might weigh three and a half
tonnes and not go that fast,

but Dick has grand plans for it.

It's the shell is what we're after.

He wants to convert it into a family
camper van,

so that they can all go on
adventures together,

when their busy schedule at the
chateau allows it.

It's been standing quite a while
but... Rock solid?

It looks in very good nick.

This is very special,

Wow! It's actually quite spacious,
isn't it?

and while Angel's busy preparing
for her parents'

golden anniversary party...

We're moving.

an Asquith Mascot bus,

back to the chateau.

She hasn't been out of Wales
for years.

We hit England yesterday

and France today.

And finally, after a 400-mile
journey, over three countries,

the future Strawbridge
camper van is home.

The camper van conversion,
though, will have to wait

because not only is there Jenny and
Steve's anniversary party to plan,

but a new job has just shot to the
top of Dick and Angel's to-do list.

The Chateau-de-la-Motte Husson
is surrounded by 12 acres of land

with a third covered in woods.

And hidden amongst the trees is
a rather large and mysterious hole.

Wow. I have never seen that.

I think the reason I've never come
is that I'm often with the children

and I've not really known...

I was thinking it might be
an ice house.

Wealthy families, like the chateau's
previous owners, the Baglionis,

would have kept their ice
in a subterranean ice house.

If this is the remains of one,
it's lost its roof,

but as far as Angel's concerned,
it could still prove useful.

Has it got a base? Can we fill it up
and see what happens?

No, it would go straight through
the edges.

This is not a swimming pool. OK.

Lose that thought to begin with.
It's not a swimming pool.

The water would just go out
everywhere.

What it is is
a bit of a death trap... Oh.

..so we have to think about
how we deal with that.

Can we put a fence around it?

We'll definitely fence it,
if nothing else.

Worried their future wedding
guests will not only

stumble across the hole
but also into it,

Dick and chateau helpers Amanda
and Quentin promptly get to work.

The reason why we're putting

And with 17 weddings and her
parents' golden anniversary party to

organise, her latest acquisition's
about to prove rather popular.

It's a rotary iron
for the big linen.

All the napkins, we can put it
through, and it just comes out.

That's amazing!

It's like Christmas come early!

As well as their guests' bedclothes,
there are also at least 80 napkins

to wash and iron after every single
wedding -

a time-consuming job
that can't be avoided,

but can at least be sped up.

Things like this make everyone's
life a lot easier.

And, you know,
I don't need diamonds!

Like, going into...

I need really good hoovers, really
good irons, good window cleaners.

That's what my world is around.

And then, when all of that's done,
I can do flowers.

This is lovely.

CHEERING

This year, Dick and Angel are
hosting more weddings and events

at the chateau than ever before.

Congratulations, Ashley and Lisa,
I pronounce you husband and wife.

Ashley, you may kiss your bride.

But as well as arranging everything
from the food to the flowers,

Angel also has to organise Jenny
and Steve's golden anniversary.

And to up the ante even further,

they're hosting a three-day
wedding just before it.

We definitely need to have a sweep.

I got up whatever time, and just
sorting out transfers for Mum

and Dad's wedding anniversary.

It's busy.

There's nothing being taken
away from the wedding.

And you know what? We're kind of
used to doing this thing

where we've got something
quite big going on,

but we've got something else really
big going like that.

It's parallel activity.

Dad's calling me quite a bit.

And it's great, there's
so much excitement

happening in the background

and that excitement is joyous to
see, but there's the lead-up,

there's the journey to it,

and, erm...and that is just...
that's happening, that's now.

But no matter how busy Angel is,
she's determined her parents

will have the celebration
they've always wanted.

You know, it's good, it's exciting.

Can't wait.

And, as more than 100 of Jenny
and Steve's family

and friends are coming
over from Britain to celebrate,

some extra help's been drafted in.

This time, from Dick's
side of the family.

His son, James, a professional chef,
has driven from Cornwall to France

to lend a hand,
as well as catch up with everyone.

the wisdom of your ways.

Now James is here, the golden
anniversary catering team

is officially convened.

Oh, Dad!

And it's soon clear who's head chef.

Right, Grandma and Grandad are going
to have lots of different food.

That's what we've decided - there'll
be lots of different food.

How do we do it?
I've got a good idea.

We could do all around the world.

All around the world?

That's a brilliant idea.

But with so many people to feed,
Dick's keen to narrow the choice

down to the countries that Jenny
and Steve have at least visited.

Right, OK, what other countries
have they been to?

England. What's England famous for?

Wait, golden roast beef.

Roast beef. OK.

Wait - since they love curries,
we could do a giant curry.

Curry's a good idea.

And it has all sorts of different
curries in it.

Can I just say, this is what
it's like working with you,

because he comes up with
so many ideas.

We need to do some cooking, Arthur.
Yeah. Let's do it.

We could do sushi.

This is my family.

Make something really fancy.
Can you do that? Yeah.

While the menu reflects Jenny
and Steve's love of travel,

Angel's thinking of other ways

to add a personal touch to her
parents' party.

And, as her dad's a keen
photographer,

she has an idea he might appreciate.

All my essentials - bottle opener,
clamp, glue,

and used film canisters.

I did have this wonderful idea that
I would send everyone

little sort of Kodak invitations.

And, you know, one thing
kind of happens and another

and then, you know, you lose months
upon months,

so I didn't get it out,
but I did not give up on the idea

because I've bought these
and they're going to get used!

Angel's got dozens of old film
canisters and she's hoping,

if her plan works,
to turn them into a little memento.

I only ever remember my dad with a
camera or a cine camera in his hand.

always, and we have got so many
photos.

I mean, their attic now,
over at the house, honestly?

It's basically full of just photos
so it just felt quite fitting.

As the anniversary will also be
a once-in-a-lifetime reunion,

Angel's hoping to gather as many
photos of the event as possible.

The idea is that I'm going to
flick the lid off

then put one of these strips, which
is sort of, you know, the film,

and then they can pull it out
themselves.

The strip in the film canister
simply tells their guests

where they can upload their snaps.

So it's really, really simple and
I think it will look quite sweet.

50 years is a long old time,
isn't it?

Mum and Dad met when they were 16
and, basically, my mum said,

"I went out with your dad cos he
just wouldn't take no for an
answer!"

And you know what? 50 years later,

I mean, they're just
made for each other.

They're a good partnership.

You know what it's like
when you're doing things.

The first one always ends up
being a bit ropey

and then you get into your flow.

So, right, OK.

That's that, that's out.

And then I just need to put
that on there...like so.

That's good, a good size.

And then just need to roll it round.

And once the canister cover's
clicked back on...the job's done.

I've cracked it. It's good.

Outside, Dick and James are going to
the walled garden in search of

some aromatic extras for the party
menu.

Right, herbs. This is slightly
different from the last time

you saw it. Bit overgrown at the
minute. It looks fantastic,
doesn't it? Not bad, eh? Yeah.

Dick's garden may be bursting with
culinary delights,

but he's also quite keen it
remains that way.

Are we allowed to just help
ourselves to whatever we want?

Erm... Yes. Within reason.

There's sage there,

They're sage flowers.

season, but for the next two days

of the year's biggest events...

the reunion goes to plan.

We've just finished a wedding,

and it's been the hottest
weekend of the year.

As Jenny and Steve moved to France
five years ago to be with

Dick, Angel and the children,

they haven't seen
some of their friends for years.

for a barbecue and a catch-up.

being turned around at the moment.

And actually it's really lovely.

I've got enough chairs out.

With more guests than normal
arriving at the chateau,

Angel just hopes they can cope,

Four years, and lots of pig roasts,
later it's still going strong.

Last year, Dick even designed
and made

a super-sized, tailor-made
rotisserie for it...

..capable of cooking up
to 50 chickens at a time.

Preparing for tonight's barbecue,
Dick's son James finally has

a chance to
inspect his dad's handiwork.

Dick starts checking
off their culinary to-do list.

Making potato salad may sound
simple, but as it's

one of Jenny's specialities,
Dick has to get it right.

is the way that Jenny's made it

was broken beyond repair,

but three decades later,
Angel and Paul have had it restored.

They just need to sneak it
past their dad.

We've got to sneak this in
under the wire, son.

Among the thousands of photos
that Steve has,

some are far more precious
than others,

and today, he's got the perfect
excuse to put them on display.

You know, we didn't have many
photos of our wedding... I know.

..but, you know, what I've got
is very special.

This is my absolute
favourite of Mum.

She was 16 years old.

With the cocktail cream tea
out of the way,

the catering team now turn their
attention to the evening's menu..

I love mayonnaise - garlic
mayonnaise - mmm. OK.

..one that not only celebrates Jenny
and Steve's extensive travels,

but also some of
the local specialities.

It's black garlic.

That is great. Isn't it cool?
Squidge it in there.

I know - isn't it awesome?

And this hopefully is going to make

the mayonnaise completely black.

Have you ever seen
black mayonnaise before?

Isn't it going to be weird?
No but I have seen it white.

This is exactly how
it normally works

when I'm in the kitchen with
Daddy as well -

is that the young ones do
all the work...

And I walk around looking good.

..and he walks around trying
to chop quickly.

Show me your muscles. Yeah.

Get those guns out, big boy.

Pop them in there.

Now, mash it with that,
and see what it smells like.

With so many friends and family
coming to the party,

Angel wants to ensure they get
a photo of everyone

for her parents' album...

We want different sized balloons -

we want big, we want small.

..so she's setting up a
mini-photo booth in the dining room.

We're going to have
photographs on there later,

and Mummy wants to do a little
balloon garland.

As there isn't long
until their guests arrive,

she's hoping Dorothy might lend
a hand decorating it.

Mamma - this now?

Absolutely brilliant.

Oh, this is perfect.

This is teamwork, isn't it?

You pass me a balloon,
I'll blow it up and put it on.

Aaargh!

Stay focused. Come on, babe,
stay focused.

Dorothy may have run out of puff,
but the garland is finished,

and just in time.

That's lovely, innit?

By six o'clock, not only has
the rain stopped,

but the party's about to begin.

It feels like 30 degrees now,

and it's been raining all day,

and now it's boiling.

50 years worth of family and friends

reunited for one
very special evening.

Now everyone's arrived, Dick
and James, with Arthur supervising,

prepare to serve the first of eight
completely different dishes.

I said to do make things
all around the world.

You did, and look at us.

We're all over the place.

Over the next few hours, Jenny
and Steve's guests are treated to

a feast of flavours from India,
to the East End.

We're good. We're really
hot on this.

Make it so that it's like a flower.

Don't be shy of the peppercorn
sauce - Steve loves it.

So, tandoori chicken has been fried,
been marinaded,

lovely bit of haddock that's
been beer-battered.

Arancini, black mayonnaise, salt and
vinegar pepper and home-made tartar.

Yeah. You'd eat those,
wouldn't you? Yeah.

Tandoori chicken.

There is one dish, though, that has
a lot to live up to -

the steak au poivre
that Jenny and Steve ate

on their wedding day 50 years ago.

We both ordered steak au poivre
and it was this round, that thick,

and it was covered in the poivre,
the peppercorn sauce... Oh, lovely.

..and there was nothing
left on that plate.

The beef is gorgeous.

It's not overcooked.

It's lovely, darling.

It was a hard menu -
they've travelled the world,

and eaten some brilliant food,
so, you know...

And they've had memories attached
to all of these things,

and now they've got new memories
to attach to them all.

As soon as the whole menu's
been served...

Yeah! High five!

..it's time for James to leave.

Work calls, and the last ferry back
to Britain won't wait for him.

Right, come on, you - you've got
a ferry, no partying.

Are you on? I'm on. Bye-bye, James!

The anniversary party,
though, carries on...

Don't drop it.

..and soon its time for Angel and
her brother Paul to present

Jenny and Steve with
a very special gift.

Is something going to jump out
of it, a jack-in-a-box or something?

Oh, my giddy aunt!

That is amazing.

I have to say... Thank you so much.

That was the biggest surprise ever.

Mum and Dad, thank you for being
wonderful parents,

and incredible grandparents.

You taught us how to be happy,

to be open, loving and caring,

and we are who we are
because of you two,

even the bad bits, so...!

We feel so very lucky to have you
all here...

but all of you at some time

have laughingly asked how I have
managed to put up with Stephen.

I simply love you, darling.

Ahhh.

We're so lucky to be living this
dream in France with Angela and Dick

who have done
all of this today for us.

Thank you, darlings.

We can't thank you enough.

And I'm a very proud mum,
mum-in-law and grandma.

Thank you all so much.

Once everyone's dried their eyes,

Jenny and Steve's party continues
through the night.

Calm has descended upon the chateau,

and, with the anniversary
celebrations deemed a success,

Dick and Angel can finally relax

and even enjoy a moment together.

In fact, we won't tell anyone
where we are.

We're good for the next
couple of hours here.

Thank you for my flower garden,

Mr Strawbridge - it's stunning.

It's just tall enough
so nobody knows we're here.

I think there's a very good chance
of a glass of wine and a sleep.
