It's now a boat.

French fairy tale.

It's an early Spring morning

and some of the chateau's residents
have already been hard at work.

I see eggs.

To Arthur and Dorothy's delight,

the geese have finally started
to lay their supersized eggs.

Great, three eggs.

Look at that - it's as big
as a chicken egg. No, bigger.

We need to check to see
if there's any more in there.

Yeah! On that pile.

Can you see it? Yeah.

Wait, wait, hold on.

Hold that one for me,
Arthur, carefully.

Let's see what's going on
and have a check over here.

That's all I can find.

Hold on, that's good.

We've got four eggs.

Right, how are we going to eat them?

Do you know what I used to do
before you were born

when we were in London? What?

I used to bring a goose egg
from Cornwall up for your mummy and

she didn't have an eggcup big enough
so we'd have to put it in a mug.

Today, though, Angel's vast
collection of vintage china

does include two large egg coddlers.

how do we do coddled eggs?

You need to get an egg and then
put in the egg with some butter.

We're going to use the blunt
edge for breaking open our egg.

ago, the whole family's been

waiting for this moment,
and it doesn't disappoint.

But as soon as the inaugural eggs
have been eaten...

..it's time to get back to work.

Over the past four years,
Dick and Angel have worked hard

to establish a weddings
and events business at the chateau.

What do you reckon?

While Dick and his team

have prepared
over 25,000 different dishes...

CROWD APPLAUDS AND CHEERS

..Angel's personally welcomed
over 5,000 guests,

including 900
who've stayed overnight.

This year they'll be busier
than ever.

So, to cope with demand,
Dick and Angel have set in motion

Operation Sous Sol.

Converting the back of the basement
into a state-of-the-art

professional kitchen, with
a multifunctional utility room

and loos next door.

Phase One, Dick's events kitchen,
has already been completed.

This is so 21st century -
clean, hygienic.

This is positively industrial.

Now, with just a few weeks to go
until the season's first guests

arrive, it's time for Phase Two,
the new utility room.

First, though, Dick has something
he wants to show Angel.

Scraps of antique wallpaper -
some 150 years old -

have been glued inside an
old stair cupboard.

It's nowhere else in the chateau,

I absolutely love it.

Look how vibrant the red is.

I mean, you know, it would've been
hand-finished.

Wow.

You haven't even seen,

but if you look along the creases
there on the... Oh, my God!

There's little bits.

I know this wallpaper - this is
the wallpaper that was in

the entrance way.

That's the peacock, like the one
I call the peacock.

Where's that? That's amazing.
And look - different wallpapers.

The antique hand-printed wallpaper
might be worth a lot now,

but 150 years ago, it used by
the chateau's staff to

block out the dust.

It's unbelievable, isn't it?

Oh, you're not going to take...

What's going to happen with
these stairs?

We're going to board them in.

Oh, are you? OK.

I just love that, even years on,
we're still discovering little bits.

I kind of don't want to finish.

Oh, dear, it's going to be awful
if we ever get the house done,

isn't it?

Yeah. Dear God!

Unfortunately for Dick and Angel,

the chateau seems to have
an interminable to-do list -

including extending the new utility
room into the wine cellar next door.

This is the important part here.

Great. That's the wall. Yeah.

This is your wallpaper on the other
side of this wall, OK?

Yeah. From here where the pipes come
through we're talking about

knocking that away. Right.

That's just literally, like...
Kick that down, couldn't we?

I don't want to make a mess.

A few days later, though,
Angel gets her chance.

This is very satisfying.

That wall being there is
actually quite handy.

I think that's why he moved the door
over to that point,

so there's enough room there.

There's just one more thing to do
and the job's done.

Gosh, it's fantastic.

It may only be a washing-up
and laundry room,

but it does come with a rather
exceptional view.

Oh, wow.

It is a moat view, isn't it?
That is amazing.

That is beautiful.

I love it.

There are now just a few weeks until
the start of the wedding season,

and the race is on to complete
Operation Sous Sol

by the time their first
guests arrive.

But before builder-mate
Steve covers every surface

of the new utility room
in plasterboard,

Angel wants to ensure its history
isn't completely forgotten.

The best bit about this room,
for me at the moment,

apart from that it's big,
it's much bigger than I thought,

is this piece of wallpaper.

The chateau is still giving us
little gems

and that's why I don't like working
too fast through the chateau

because I don't want to lose that
sort of, that excitement,

that I still might find things.

As Angel's kept a record of all
the wallpaper she's ever found

in the chateau, she's keen these
little gems are also celebrated.

What absolutely amazes me
is that this was,

they didn't care about it,
it was like newspaper to them

and this stuff, to me,
is like big treasure!

I love this, I have not seen it
and that's why I'm so excited.

As soon as we talk about wallpaper,
I'm feeling quite inspired!

As builder-mate Steve will now be
plastering the utility room

for the next few days...

Dick's gone outside to fix a rather
large mess he made last year.

Five months ago, Dick decided
to create a wild flower meadow,

by ploughing up 3,500 square metres
of grass

in front of the Orangery.

Is it meant to look like that?

His idea though, didn't
go down that well with Angel.

It looks like organized sabotage.

This will be all wild flowers
when we finish.

Trust me.

This year, Dick's determined
to prove that all his hard work

will be worth it.

And to do that, he and
chateau helper, Quentin,

have bought themselves a new toy.

This is a hearse,

It's basically...

I don't know quite what it's going
to be when we get it out here.

But hopefully it's a rake.

Unfortunately, the second hand rake
doesn't come with instructions.

Hmmm, how does it go together?

Up in her attic workroom,
Angel's thinking of ways

to retain some of the utility room's
character.

I have total reassurance that it
actually looks like a staircase

and not a weird bit of art.

With her artist friend Sam's help,

she's used her photos to recreate
the back of the basement stairs.

But before the idea
goes any further,

Angel's decided to make
a paper prototype.

I need to check it's OK

because I want to order this
on a really nice vinyl,

a thick wearing,

going to outlive me vinyl.

I don't want to get it wrong.

If her idea works, the final version
will arrive in one long roll.

Currently though, it's in 48
almost identical pieces.

I feel guilty that the kids aren't
here helping me but I have to admit,

on this occasion, I think it's
best that I've got a clear head.

As soon as Angel's fairly sure she's
taped everything the right way up,

she just needs to go down
and find out for sure.

I think you've just
plastered my lovely coat.

I didn't want to stop you
doing what you were doing.

Oh, that's absolutely, honestly,
perfect timing.

So this is the middle

You know what this is

How difficult the actual thing
is going to be.

It feels like it's going

For Angel though,

retaining the chateau's history
is just as important as aesthetics.

It's going to look lovely
when it's done properly.

You never know,
you might set a trend. No!

Outside, the meadow has now been
raked to within an inch of its life.

And as far as Dick's concerned,

it's ready for stage two of his
wild flower recovery programme.

I've bought wild flower seeds
that...

two kilos of annuals which means
they'll be in flower this year,

and three kilos of perennials

which means that they're
going to flower year after year.

I'm going to turn this
very ugly ploughed field

into something beautiful.

Mix these all up.

Experience in the kitchen
never goes amiss in the garden.

There we go.

All Dick can hope for is that
five kilos worth of seeds

will be enough to appease Angel.

Over the past three years,
Dick and Angel have created

four guest suites
inside the chateau,

as well as a glamping site
outside.

Now Angel would like to offer
some extra accommodation

and she's found the perfect solution
online, but it's collection only.

For Dick, it means trekking
all the way from the chateau,

to the West Midlands.

Angela doesn't even know what
she's let us in for, does she?

She has no idea.

In Angel's eyes, 'Dolphin',
a 40-year-old canal boat,

was such a good deal, she simply
couldn't afford to ignore it.

I love the fact that
Angel's bought a boat

and it doesn't really matter
that it doesn't float.

And do you know what?

As long as it looks pretty,
Angela's happy.

Dick's job is to ensure
it's watertight,

and to do that, he's brought it
to a boat yard,

where they have a rather subtle way

of checking the strength
of the hull.

Who gave him a hammer?

As there's obviously some work to
do before the boat can actually

float on the moat, Dick gladly
hands Dolphin over to the experts.

Once he's back
at the chateau though,

Dick's keen to show Angel
exactly what she's purchased.

Um, we have a boat and you actually
haven't seen inside the boat at all?

I haven't but I have seen
what was on the internet.

I've seen pictures.
You've seen pictures, right, OK.

You've chosen this from
sort of the beauty concept.

How lovely it is.

I'm not going to be in for
a massive shock, am I?

I think at this stage,
you're probably going to see it

as bad as it gets.

So Angel can get a clearer view,

Dick's arranged a video call from
David, the man who's fixing it up.

tuning into Angel's vision.

it for the beautiful pictures

and this is what we've
actually bought.

We bought the piece of metal
with a hole in it for a window.

Do you know, I always look
at everything with a vision

so I still think it looks great.

It's a bit breezy.

And the breeze is coming
through the doors as well

cos as you can see, the door
panel's a bit tired.

That's a wee bit tired.

That's the one, yeah.

My problems start
when you get it over to us.

Dolphin may be full
of accidental air holes...

That's great.
..but Angel won't be deterred.

We're going to make it fabulous.

But actually, that's
the beauty of it.

I knew you hadn't got much
boating experience.

You've never been on a barge.

Not that I remember.

But I love the idea of it.

It's spring, and Dick and Angel's
first guests are due

within a couple of weeks.

To cater for them, as well as
the other 1,500 visitors

who'll come this summer,
a much-needed washing up

and laundry room's about to
be plumbed in.

Or rather, it WILL be, once Dick's
worked out how to turn his drill on.

Ah, there's two "On", that's why.

I knew there was something
I remembered.

It's been a while.

A new hole's needed for the tumble
dryer's flue.

Unfortunately for Dick, builder mate
Steve and the drill,

the chateau's lower walls are faced
with solid granite.

All Dick can do is sit patiently
and watch the drill do its work...

..or at least try to.

a man-sized bucket.

Two hours and two buckets later,
Dick's perseverance pays off.

We have a hole.

I've got to take these off now.

It's really quite peaceful.

but to Angel, it's still part
of the chateau.

This would break the sideboard.

Inside, Angel's trying her best to
make their new utility room

slightly less utilitarian.

I gave the printers free rein to
kind of decide

what to print it on, so I don't know
what I've got.

Genuinely.

Concerned that the room's
old staircase,

as well as its scraps of antique
wallpaper, would be forgotten,

Angel's decided to recreate it by
having her photographs

printed on to sticky-back vinyl.

Or at least that's what she's
hoping has happened.

Ooh. OK.

So it's a bit shiny. I'm just...I'm
just having a little peek.

But I did say, in fairness, that it
had to be wipe down.

OK.

God, it is huge.

I just think it looks great.

I mean, it's shiny, but it kind of
had to be shiny.

It is just really big.

If it isn't the right size,
totally my fault.

Unfortunately, there's only one
way to find out

if Angel's got her
measurements muddled.

I'm a bit scared. Um...

That is perfect.

All Angel needs to do now is
persuade Dick to help her

put it up under the stairs.

But, as it first needs to be
peeled back

and stuck to a couple of boards,
Dick's not feeling the love.

I don't like sticky-back plastic.

When I was in primary school,
people used to cover

their exercise books and things
with sticky-back plastic.

But I can't do it. I was always
rubbish. I just do creases.

And I'd much rather stick
a pin in my eye.

It also doesn't help that he's
married to a perfectionist.

I'm thinking that's going to be
quite forgiving

because of the pattern on it,
isn't it?

Well, what I'm hoping is that,
it's just for us,

that I won't be so twitchy about
the wrinkles.

But tackling four square metres
of sticky-back plastic

isn't Dick's only problem.

He also has to make sure it fits
perfectly under the stairs.

I'm just starting to think this

Because this bit here comes up

That was so not convincing.

Once they've both agreed which way
is probably right,

Dick takes a deep breath and enters
his personal pit of misery.

I am not in my comfort zone?

Eventually, Dick admits defeat
and decides

his skills lie elsewhere.

To cope with the stress.

Released from sticky-backed
plastic purgatory,

Dick gets back to the sort of work
he actually enjoys,

like fitting the utility
room's worktops.

Angela's got a cunning plan for
the utility room.

It involves...

We've got double sinks,

plus all of the work surface is
going to be tiled.

Allegedly.
HE CHUCKLES

Yes, well... I just say yes.

As up to 2,000 pieces of
crockery and cutlery

have to be washed up after
every wedding...

..Dick's rather keen to get
everything up and running

before the season starts.

This is all going to get tiled.

Ice machine, cupboard, plate washer,
cupboard, cupboard, cupboard,

washing machine and tumble dryer.

And lots more space in here.

Yeah, good.

A few days later, the utility room
is fully functioning.

But for Angel, being functional
isn't good enough.

It also has to be attractive.

Steve. Yeah? I've got the tiles.

Keen to add some colour, Angel has
had the worktop tiles

printed with her photos of
the antique wallpaper.

So there's five designs,

and they are similar but they
are different.

So, one, two...

..three, four, five.

As well as showing off the subtle
differences between

the hand-printed flowers,
it also means

a little bit of chateau history will
remain forever on display.

Do you think two tiles or one tile?

I like the mismatch of it all.

If something's really, really,
really busy... Yeah.

..it works.

So, these don't need to be
matched up.

They've all just got to be not
next to each other.

These are the rules - not next

and the right way up.

Yes. And if you can crack that,

Just four days before their first
guests arrive,

Angel receives a rather
large delivery.

You've got a boat.

I've got to say, I mean, I know you
keep saying how small it is,

but it looks huge.

She looks beautiful.

Over the past few weeks, David
and his team have worked hard

to replate, repaint
and revive Dolphin.

Can you come a little bit further

The person most impressed with
Dolphin's transformation is Dick.

It's looking very, very nice.

The sling, please, Dick.

And all that's left for the boat
team to do

is get it on to the chateau's moat.

You've nearly got a boat, darling.

but it's nearly a boat.

It's the beginning
of the glamping season,

and Angel's latest purchase has just
been delivered to the chateau.

Slowly! It's quite heavy. Oh!

A 35 foot, 8-tonne narrow boat
called Dolphin.

And Angel thinks
she has the perfect spot for it.

Slower, slower, please.
Slower for Daddy, slower.

We've got to stop it
bashing into these.

Keep it tight, pull. You have to
decide how far we're going.

Have you any idea where you
want it to be? Actually, this is
the perfect position.

Well, try stopping it.

As Angel won't have time to style it
until after the wedding season,

Dolphin will begin its life at
the chateau as a whimsical
water feature.

I think you got where your boat's
going to be. This is lovely.

The boat may have only just been
added to this year's to-do list,

but that doesn't deter its new crew.

This is Dolphin.

THEY CLAMOUR

It's amazing, it's just brilliant.

Welcome aboard, mateys.

LAUGHS

Until Dolphin's been given Angel's
magic touch,

the only glamping site at the
chateau is on the other side
of the moat.

Built by Dick and Angel last year,
the accommodation

is inside two large domes,
one on the moat and one on the land.

And this weekend, the season's first
guests will be staying here,

celebrating a very special birthday.

So, after its winter hibernation,
the domes not only need waking up

but also getting dressed.

It feels totally like deja vu
but a bit more relaxed.

Because I'm sure I was putting this
on near enough to the day last year.

And it was just as hot.

But it was a bit more panicked
because the tiles hadn't been
grouted

and the chairs hadn't arrived.

Like numerous other things.

But it has been quite a bit of work
getting the domes live-able again.

All the floors had to get re-done.

They didn't look bad
but they didn't look good.

And it's a learning curve.

Just around the corner, Dick's busy
with an urgent repair job.

WHISTLES

Fixing the floating dome's doorway.

The little dome arrived with a zip.

But now it's...

..sticky.

And everybody knows a sticky zip
is a bad thing.

But, like a lot of repair jobs,
it's becoming rather complicated.

The actual plastic door's at a slope
so I need to have a vertical door

so it opens but have a slope
to keep the rain out.

To keep me on my toes.

Dick's decided to replace the
unreliable zip

with a solid wooden door.

Unfortunately, due to the dome being
dome-shaped,

it has to be made from scratch.

At 155 high and a metre wide,
it's a really odd-sized door.

It would have been easier
if I could just buy a door.

Stick the door on there.

With the first glamping guests
arriving in just a matter of days,

and the wedding
season about to begin,

it's now more important than ever
to have the utility room in place.

We're now at a stage where we
actually have tiles

covering our sort of very cheap
kitchen counters.

It's all looking very nice in there
but Dick has been saying to me

for a while that, you know,

they're not very good for having
vintage china on.

As most of the crockery used
at their weddings is vintage china,

and will need to be hand-washed,

Angel's rather keen it doesn't get
dropped on the new tiled worktop.

Dick's been saying to me,
"You've got to find a Victorian
wooden drainer,"

and to be honest I didn't look
because I had no idea what he was on
about.

I hadn't seen one before,
believe it or not.

And we was at a friend's house
and they said,

"I've got one up in the attic."

LAUGHS

Et voila.

All it needed was
a bit of love from Angel.

And it'll be great because
- and look how big it is -

look how many teacups
I can get on there.

Time, though, is running out
and with the season's first
guests imminent,

Dick and Angel declare
the gargantuan task that
was Operation Sous Sol over.

What had once been a damp
and decaying back room

is now a 21st-century
events kitchen,

capable of serving
dozens of guests at a time.

While, next door,
Angel's old junk room

has been transformed
into a fully-fledged

washing-up and laundry space.

It may be more functional than fun,
but during the busy wedding season,

it will be, for Angel
and her helpers,

an absolute godsend.

My heaven.

The utility room is probably not
meant to have the "wow"

of the forward-facing rooms
but, actually, for me and Dick,

it's still part of the chateau,

it still had incredible little gems
that we found.

And it's little things like that

that make this room really special
to me and Dick.

As well as obviously
turning out the laundry.

SHE LAUGHS

And these bad boys...

It's a 15-kilo tumble dryer.

It's going to change my life.

It's going to be
the highlight of my year,

obviously after birthdays
and special occasions.

It's going to make turning around
from a wedding much easier.

And Angel's photographic
reproduction of the staircase

also ensures that the room's 19th
century history won't be forgotten.

It's just these little nuggets
in this room

that are little reminders
of the Sous-Sol, of what it was.

And that's special.

We will actually be spending quite
a lot of time in here this summer.

It's the weekend,

and this year's first guests
are already on their way.

Even though the glamping site
has been checked numerous times,

Angel still wants to make
one more inspection.

At the start of the season,
you just have so many things

to put back into place.
Like, a million things.

And it takes a while to get there
and get it all cleaned

and to remember everything.

And we've got four ladies today
coming on a helicopter.

Oh, dear. It's a different world.

It's going to be great and there's
got to be a little bit of a giggle,

isn't there, cos they are
coming camping in a helicopter.

I just think that's great.
I really do.

But Angel's not the only one
excited by the helicopter.

Hi, gorgeous girl. Hi, baby.

Dick's already listening out for the
sound of approaching rotor blades.

As it's the first time a
helicopter's landed at the chateau,

they have no idea what to expect.

It could be dusty... OK.
..when it comes. Yeah?

The pilot's going to land
where he wants. Right.

I'd suggest the grass rather than
here but that's entirely up to him.

Nobody asked me
to put an "H" down, did they?

Look, there's one space,
really, isn't there?

I-I can...
Where are they coming from?

Um... England.

I've no idea. I don't know.

Oh, I do know it's blue.

I know that's funny but actually
that's what Julia told me.

Um, any helicopter that turns up,
we're going to know it's them.

A red helicopter - "Sorry!"

"No, you're the red helicopter.
We're after the blue one."

That's the helicopter.

Can you hear it?

Yeah. Where is it?

I don't know. I mean, it could be...

we're not in the way.

There we go. It's quite big.

And it is actually quite large.

He's got to decide
where he's going to land. Yeah.

I hope he doesn't land in the walled
garden and think that's the cross.

That's actually
quite a big helicopter.

I hope they're coming over here.

of their first guests,

the summer season
has officially begun.
