worth hundreds
of thousands of dollars.

The police spotted him
and chased him.

But he disappeared
down an alley.

It would've been
the perfect crime,

except for one thing.

Labash recognized the cologne
the thief was wearing.

He only knew one person
who wore that particular scent:

City Councilman Ron Haft.

some politicians lie

about their financial status.

Anyway, the police
questioned Councilman Haft

and they even searched
his home and office.

But they found no sign
of the gold coins.

Still, Labash was certain
that Haft had stolen them.

So he went
and confronted him directly.

Tempers flared, and Labash
ended up killing Haft.

Calvin Labash was arrested
for the murder of Ron Haft

and was sentenced to
life in prison.

But he killed himself
the week his sentence began.

And no one heard
another thing about it.

in the year 1885.

That was the year that they ran
every single Chinese resident

out of town.

They had brought
the Chinese migrants here

for cheap labor.

But before long, the locals
began to turn against them.

the Chinese immigrants

for everything that was
going wrong in the city.

I guess some things
never change.

But, that's not the whole story.

City officials told the Chinese
that they had one week

to leave town.

But these were their homes,

and they had
no place else to go.

When the locals found out that
the Chinese were resisting,

things got more and more tense.

All over town,
riots began to break out.

And as always happens,
looters began to take advantage

of the chaos.

The payroll was stolen.

And the locals tried to blame
the Chinese for the robbery.

But my great-great grandmother,
a woman named Lei-Lei Tang,

she knew better.

She was a renowned gardener,

and she'd been hired
by some of the locals

to tend to their flowers.

And as she was
going about her duties

during of all the unrest,

she happened to overhear
the people

who had actually
committed the robbery.

She saw what the men had
stolen. Dozens of gold coins,

each imprinted
with a distinctive seal.

- So, the coins are real!

- And Mr. Labash must have
gotten them from his ancestors,

those bank robbers?

- Or bought them from
whoever did inherit them!

- Perhaps you know,

the Chinese History Museum
tried to purchase those coins

from Mr. Labash several times
before their disappearance.

They said those old coins
were part of

The history of this city.

But Mr. Labash always refused.

The museum could never afford to
pay the real value of the coins.

An attempt to erase this
chapter from their history.

But it wasn't erased.
