That was the scariest moment
of my life.

And even more jaw-dropping
weather phenomena.

It didn't happen to you.

All across the globe,
there are dangerous hot spots

Where wildfires
burn uncontrollably,

Causing unimaginable
destruction.

Heroic firefighters tirelessly
battle mother nature's fury,

And though these brave men
and women know

They are risking their lives,

They keep going
because it's their job.

So what happens when the bravest
among us become trapped

With absolutely nowhere to go?

[ radio chatter ]

All they can do

Is pray to live another day.

December 31, 2019,

Nowra, australia.

Horrifying bushfires have been

Ravaging the continent
for months.

And battling to help
protect his native land

Is veteran full-time
firefighter kayle barton.

Barton: I've always wanted
to be a firefighter,

Ever since I was a young boy,

To help the community,
do what I can to help people

When they're
in their time of need.

Narrator: Kayle and three other
fellow firefighters

Have been dispatched
to help local residents

Who are trapped amongst
the furious flames.

Barton: That was our priority,
to get down there

And help to protect their lives
and protect their homes.

[ siren wailing ]

We knew the conditions
were incredibly difficult,

But as the day wore on,

We were getting reports
that towns further south of

Where we were going were
getting completely obliterated.

Narrator: As the firefighters
approach the town,

They see the first sign
of trouble --

The wind has picked up.

Barton: The wind was
getting stronger,

And that's when we started
to see small embers

Floating across the road
in front of us.

And that's when we knew
the wind was pushing the fire

Directly towards us.

Narrator: And then darkness.

Thick smoke has engulfed the
woods alongside the road.

The men are now headed straight
into the depths of hell.

Barton: It felt like
an absolute instant,

But it just went from darkness
to the brightest

Red and orange flames
we'd ever seen.

It was absolutely surreal.

We were all quite shocked
that it happened so quickly.

Vagell: If there's enough wind,
and if it's dry enough,

It can spread miles
in just a matter of minutes.

Narrator: In an attempt
to shield themselves

From the blazing heat,

One of the men grabs
a fire blanket

And covers the window.

Barton: The purpose of that
was to reflect radiant heat

Back out of the window

So that the interior cab
will remain somewhat cooler.

Narrator: Kayle and the three
other firefighters are now

In the middle
of a blazing inferno.

Barton: Everywhere we looked
was flames,

And there was absolutely
no way out.

[ indistinct chatter ]

Everything was just
orange and red.

We couldn't see the road
more than about

3 feet in front of us.

And the flames were actually
moving horizontally,

Which I've never seen,

Flames blowing just completely
horizontal to the road.

The heat was absolutely intense.

We could smell burning plastics.

We could smell the smoke.

We could hear every piece
of debris hitting the truck.

[ rapid thudding ]

Dr. Abbott: This is really
an apocalyptic scene.

You feel yourself in that truck.

"are we gonna
get out of this or not?"

Narrator: Desperate, kayle
immediately gets on the radio

To call for help.

But to his horror, nothing.

It seems all contact
has been cut off.

Barton: We couldn't hear any
replies coming back.

With the intense flames
and the smoke,

It was really starting to affect
the radio frequency.

And we were also worried
that the antennas

On top of the fire truck
had melted from the fire.

Narrator: Suddenly,
the truck comes to a halt.

[ radio static ]

The brakes have locked in place.

And as precious seconds
tick away,

The situation
looks increasingly dire.

[ coughing ]

We were running out of
clean oxygen to breathe.

One of the boys in our truck,

He did send a final message
to his mother,

Thinking that that was his last
chance to speak with her.

I thought I wouldn't see my
family and all my loved ones

And friends again.

This could be the end.

Narrator:
It quickly becomes apparent
that there is only one choice.

With no one aware
of their impending doom,

The men decide to attempt
the impossible --

To head through the fire
on foot.

But it will not be easy.

Breathing gear
and protective equipment

Can weigh close to 50 pounds,
and the men have no idea

How far they need
to walk to reach safety.

Phoenix: Whenever we
attempt to play ball

In mother nature's court,

The odds are really,
really slim that humans

Can survive a scenario
like this one.

Narrator: About 15 minutes go by
as if in slow motion,

Fighting through dense smoke

And withstanding
blazing temperatures.

Barton: We were all wearing
our protective equipment,

But the heat was still
incredibly intense,

And we couldn't see more
than 3 feet in front of us.

Narrator: Suddenly...
[ siren wailing ]

...A miracle.

Through the smoke emerges
a rescue truck.

Saved at last.

It was very emotional
and quite incredible

To see that truck driving
through the smoke towards us.

Once I saw that truck
coming through the smoke,

I knew that at that moment,
"yeah, we're safe. We made it."

Narrator:
Kayle and his men are driven
safely out of the fire storm

While their truck is left
to burn in the wreckage.

For the next three months,

The fires continue to rage
throughout australia,

Causing complete
and utter destruction.

Delgado: It was devastating.
It's a beautiful country.

And then you see these images
coming in of the animals

And just so many people
that were impacted.

Narrator:
Kayle is grateful to be alive,

But he will never forget when
he and his fellow firefighters

Got stranded in the middle
of a raging inferno.

This incident was definitely
the most intense and traumatic

Incident I've been involved in.

There must have been
some luck involved

Or someone looking over us
to keep us safe.

...The earth explodes
into the heavens.

And a tsunami of mud...

And blizzards.

All deadly natural events

That can be tracked in order
to hopefully save lives.

But there's one terrifying
weather phenomenon

That's nearly impossible
to predict --

The volcano.

It erupts without warning,
shaking the earth,

Spewing lava, and decimating
everything in its path.

[ screaming ]

So if you find yourself
in the line of fire,

Run for your life.

[ indistinct shouting ]

January 12, 2020,

The island of luzon
in the philippines.

It's an ordinary Sunday
for elizabeth caristea,

Who runs a family business
based on local tourism.

Interpreter: Our life here
is very simple.

No pollution, no noise.

Narrator: But while beautiful,

Her store sits in
a risky location

Atop the country's second
most active volcano,

The legendary taal volcano.

Elizabeth's two sons
and her husband

Give guided tours of taal,

Which sits in the middle
of a beautiful lake

And is only accessible by boat.

But because this active volcano
hasn't erupted in 43 years,

It's also a ticking time bomb.

Phoenix:
Volcanoes don't play nice.

Volcanoes,
and particularly taal,

Erupt on their own schedule.

So with this volcano,
it's not a matter of

If it will erupt again,
it's when.

Narrator: In the very early
afternoon while in her store,

Elizabeth gets the first sign
something is wrong.

There's smoke coming
from the volcano.

And then elizabeth feels
a tremor shake

The ground beneath her.

And then another one.

Suddenly...

[ indistinct shouting ]

[bleep].

...A blizzard of volcanic ash

Has exploded
just feet away from elizabeth.

[ indistinct shouting ]

Facing certain death
if they stay

And with her family
at the bottom of the volcano,

Elizabeth and the others

Must flee down
the side of the mountain,

Which is a harrowing
2-mile trek.

[ sniffles ]

Narrator: That thick smoke,

Along with scalding steam
and volcanic ash,

Spews into the sky
with a vengeance

A whopping 9 miles up
into the atmosphere.

Phoenix: Volcanic ash --
it's not like fireplace soot.

What it actually is,

Is pulverized fragments
of volcanic rock.

You breathe it in and it
essentially shreds your insides

Because it's sharp,
fragmented rock.

Narrator: Thankfully, elizabeth
arrives safely at the bottom

And is able to reunite
with her family.

But the only way to
fully escape the wrath

Of this pressure cooker

Is by boat across the lake
and to the mainland.

The terror in her voice

Are absolutely legitimate
and understandable.

[ elizabeth sobbing ]

It just really broke my heart

Just to hear this woman
screaming

Because she knows that
she is losing everything.

Narrator:
About 20 minutes later,

Elizabeth and her family
land safely across the lake,

Narrowly escaping
the belching furnace.

But mother nature is just
getting started.

Eventually,
it gets to a point where

High enough in the atmosphere,
it's cold,

And that's causing
static electricity,

Which is producing lightning.

Isn't it enough that we
have to deal with the ash

And all the other things that
are happening with the volcano?

Then you throw in lightning
from the sky.

It feels like the world
is coming to an end.

Within the religious context,
lightning becomes a way for god

To stop us in our tracks,

To secure our attention,
and to demonstrate divine power.

Narrator: In the end, the
eruption blanketed the area

With thick ash,

Transforming the usually
lush tropical paradise

Into a ghostly gray wasteland,

Including elizabeth's
home and store,

Which sadly were both
obliterated.

And while elizabeth and her
family are fortunate

To be alive,

Turning the page on this
near-death experience

Won't be easy.

Dr. Aten:
Recovery isn't something
that happens overnight.

This could impact
a community for years,

If not even, sometimes, decades.

Narrator: Coming up...

Annihilates an airport.

Wow, I just
saw that hit.

Little do you know...

A monster tornado
is on the loose,

And it's coming...

Right for you.

April 22, 2011,

St. Louis, missouri.

Dave igras is flying
from detroit to las vegas

With a couple-hour layover

At lambert st. Louis
international airport.

There was four of us,
two couples.

We were on our way to las vegas
to start our vacation.

We were gonna spend
about three days in vegas

And then tour california
for a week

And then go on a cruise
out of long beach, california.

When we landed in st. Louis,
our flight was delayed.

Igras:
Waiting, waiting, waiting.

He went and grabbed
a couple of drinks,

And then we realized every
flight was delayed or canceled.

We had no idea why.

But we noticed that the terminal
started filling up with people,

And then the rain came.

[ thunder cracks ]

And all of a sudden, the rain
went from a downpour

To blowing sideways.

Okay, this isn't good.
We're gonna be here all night.

Narrator: Gazing through
the terminal windows,

Dave discovers that
one very serious storm...

[ thunder cracks ]

...Is brewing outside.

Wow, I just
saw that hit.

I saw the lightning.

[ thunder cracks ]

I heard the thunder.

It caught us
totally by surprise.

Narrator: In addition to the
intense rain and lightning,

There's something far more
dangerous looming outside.

And dave and the hundreds of
other stranded passengers

Have no idea.

Delgado: They're just going
about their business.

But little do they know
there was an ef4 tornado

That was heading
right towards lambert airport.

[ thunder cracks ]

Narrator: An ef4 twister can
reach wind speeds up to

260 miles per hour.

It's the kind of monster where
the last place you'd ever want

To be sitting
is next to a window.

Cano: What really gets me
about this clip

Is the vulnerability
of everyone there.

There's really no place to go.

Dr. Pinn: Everyone's told,
"if a tornado is approaching,

Move to an interior room,"

But in this airport,
the terminal,

You're surrounded by windows.

Narrator: Then suddenly,
the tornado-force winds

Begin slamming into the glass.

Holy [bleep]. Wow.

And what happens next

Is straight out of
a disaster movie...

[ glass shatters ]

...When seemingly
out of nowhere,

The violent vortex of doom
enters the airport.

Igras: Somebody yelled at us
to take cover.

I just heard a lot of screaming.
Nobody knew what was going on.

Glass was shattering,
and the wind was coming through.

It all happened so fast.

[ glass shattering ]

It was literally chaos.

Delgado: You see how strong this
tornado is, you see the debris,

You see trash cans
being pushed around,

Sharp objects
just coming through.

It was confusing,
and it was scary.

Narrator: Dave,
the other passengers,

And airport personnel

All quickly scrambling,
taking cover wherever they can.

Dr. Pinn: In the dark,
we're at our most vulnerable

Without any way to prepare
or to brace ourselves

Because we can't see
what's coming.

Narrator:
For the next few seconds,

They pray for survival.

...Until silence.

The tornado has passed.
[ child crying ]

Delgado:
You see windows blown out.

You see planes
with their tail blown off.

It really did look
like a war zone.

Igras: The damage was
incredible.

Igras: Wow!

Looked like a bomb
had gone off.

Narrator: Dave and his
fellow travelers

Seem to have avoided
a catastrophe

When suddenly, they notice
something unbelievable.

The plane at the gate
moved about 30, 40 feet.

It was a full-sized plane.

And that's when we knew, yeah,
something serious is happening.

Narrator: The violent tornado
has, in fact,

Tossed the massive airplanes

Along the runway
like little toys.

Then horror -- the realization
that these planes

May blast apart at any moment.

The plane could possibly
have been filled with fuel.

Dude, I would probably get away
from that plane.

It could explode.

I don't want to
be here.

Dr. Abbot: Something like
airplane fuel,

If it ignites, you have
an instant monstrous bonfire,

And you don't want to be
anywhere near that.

[ indistinct chatter,
screaming ]

Igras: People were
definitely freaking out.

And everyone just ran,
basically, downstairs.

We had no idea
where we were going.

Yeah, we're all being
evacuated here.

Narrator:
After a few minutes,

Everyone is safely
outside the terminal.

And luckily, only a few minor
injuries are reported.

But dave will never forget
the day he found himself

Inside a monster tornado.

[ glass shatters ]

Igras: Seeing a tornado up close
and being right there

Is definitely
one of the scariest things

I've ever witnessed.

All that glass
could have shattered,

And there could have been
a lot of carnage.

Dr. Pinn:
It could have just ripped this
airport terminal apart.

It could have been
a really bad scenario.

Holy [bleep].

It's actually pretty amazing
that we were all safe.

Wow.

We could have
all died very easily.

[ indistinct chatter,
screaming ]

Coming up, a terrorizing wall
of mud barrels through a town.

And a super typhoon attacks.

Devastating natural disasters

And one of mother nature's
biggest threats to ravage

The region are mudslides,

Similar to a tsunami
but made up of rocks and debris.

If your neighborhood

Is bulldozed
by one of these monsters,

Little can be done
to spare your home...

Narrator: ...Or your life.

January 9, 2018,

Montecito, california,
90 miles north of los angeles

And nestled
between the pacific ocean

And the santa ynez mountains.

Heavy rains are in the forecast,

So marco farrell, who lives
with his aging parents,

Spends the day preparing
for a possible flood.

I set up sandbags, two-high,

Around various places
in the house

And then a row of
three-high between

The house and the street.

We sit below street level
by a couple of feet,

So it's always a challenge.

Narrator: Marco goes to bed

Knowing rain is
headed their way,

But at 4:00 a.M.,
he's jolted out of a deep sleep

By a surprisingly
violent downpour.

[ thunder cracks ]

Farrell: I woke up to the most
torrential rain storm

I've ever experienced.

I put my boots on,
my slickers, my rain gear,

And wanted to go and check
the sump pump,

Get the water away
from the house.

Narrator: He heads outside
when suddenly...

I heard a noise, and it was
really far away.

[ rain pattering ]

It was this low rumble.

Narrator: To marco's horror,
the rumbling is getting louder,

And he sees something moving
in the distance.

This can only mean one thing.

Farrell: Turn around!
The flash flood's right there!

The flash flood's
right there!

But it's too late.

A gigantic tsunami of water,
mud, and debris

Is barreling down
the street.

Get out of here! Go!

I could see all the way
a 1/4 mile up the street

And start to see,

"oh, my god, there's a wall
of debris coming."

It was moving between 20
and 30-plus miles an hour.

I mean, it was really moving
incredibly fast.

Narrator: Marco knows he and his
family are in danger

Because they are in the
merciless sights of a mudslide.

Oh, my god! Mom!

Close the door!

Farrell: I immediately turned
around and started sprinting

And yelled at my mom
to go wake up dad,

That we were gonna
have to leave,

That something bad
was happening.

Ready to go out.
Wake dad up.

Narrator: Marco's father,

Who's asleep and not wearing
his hearing aid,

Can't hear his son.

Wake up!

Wake up!

Then suddenly...
[ mud splatters ]

...A wall of mud
slams into the house.

Farrell:
When the mud hit our house,

It sounded like the biggest
bucket of pancake batter

Got just thrown
against the house.

It was the most horrific,
violent sound I'd ever heard.

Narrator: The incredible force
shatters the kitchen door,

And a rushing a river of mud
invades the house.

Farrell: And instantly, it was
ankle then shin then knee-deep.

And the whole house shaking.

I'd never experienced
anything like it.

Vagell:
I can't imagine the thoughts

That are going through
your head.

The mud is rising.

Your entire home
is being invaded by mud.

It's like the world is ending.

It seems like
it's a doomsday situation.

Narrator: Marco's dad is now
awake with his wife and son,

But with no safe place to go,

The three of them
stand in the hallway...

...Processing the horror
unfolding before their eyes.

The whole house is getting
shaken by rocks

And trees and debris
getting hit.

I was very, very worried

That structurally
the house would fail.

I really didn't think
we were gonna survive.

Narrator: In desperation,
marco opens the back door,

Which proves to be
the right decision.

Farrell: That single-handedly
saved our lives.

Had I not opened that back door,
the mud would have continued

To go up within the house,
higher than it was outside,

And eventually the weight

And pressure
then crushes the house.

Narrator:
Marco and his parents

Have barely escaped
with their lives,

And with no way
to leave the neighborhood,

They ride out the rest
of the night inside the house.

The next morning, they awaken
to assess the damage.

We were one of the worst-hit
homes on our street

That survived.

Narrator: All told,
the montecito mudslide

Destroyed several hundred homes
and killed 21 people.

I hate to say it,
but it was a disaster

Really kind of
waiting to happen.

Montecito, of course,

Dealt with wildfires
the previous year.

Anywhere that has suffered from

A tremendous amount
of burn scar,

They're going to be
perfect targets for mudslides.

Narrator: Which only highlights
just how lucky he

And his parents were
to live through the ordeal.

Farrell: That was probably the
scariest moment of my life.

It wasn't until a few days later
that the magnitude

Of what we survived
really kicked in.

Turn around!

Being granted life again
makes every sunrise

And every sunset
that much more brilliant.

It re-prioritizes life to,
at its core, what is important.

Get out of here! Go!

August 15, 2010,

Chimacum, washington.

In this small community about
40 miles northwest of seattle,

Josh kinney is spending the day

With his nephew
near a local lake.

Me and my nephew
went mountain-bike riding,

And at the end of the ride,
we went down to the boat launch

Just to kind of
check out the lake.

And as we got to the water,
I looked over,

And basically, the whole side
of the hill was moving.

It was like a
black, moving darkness.

When I approached the area,
I then noticed that it's frogs.

Narrator: Frogs, the second
plague recounted in the bible,

And enough of these
alarming amphibians

To make it look like
the ground is moving.

Kinney: I've never seen
that many frogs before.

The whole hillside was moving.
I was pretty shocked.

What in the frick
is going on here?

There are frogs everywhere.

Kinney: You could
hear them all crawling

On top of each other,
kind of like slithering.

It was just really bizarre.

Dr. Aten: If I came across a
swarm of thousands of frogs,

I'm not gonna lie,
I would be freaked out.

Martin: I don't think there's
anyone in the world,

Even if they're not religious,
who wouldn't look at this

And be reminded
of some sort of biblical plague.

Narrator:
As the ancient story goes,

God threatened to inflict
10 plagues upon the egyptians

Unless their ruler freed
the enslaved jews.

And an invasion of frogs
slithering literally everywhere

Was one of the cruel punishments
they would have to endure.

Hundreds of thousands of frogs

Kind of take over
the whole land,

And that's meant to be
a sign from god

That slavery should be
brought to an end.

Narrator: It might feel like
the end of days,

But at least there's
a possible explanation for it.

Vagell: Could be a lot of
factors that are causing that --

Rising water levels,

Increasing temperatures,
changing weather patterns.

Kinney: The whole thing was
a little bit weird.

It felt a little
"twilight zone."

I think we both left there with
a little bit uneasy feeling,

That's for sure.

Narrator: An invasion of frogs
is definitely alarming.

But what if the sun
suddenly disappeared

And pitch black descended
upon the earth?

Well, then you'd be dealing with
the ninth plague -- darkness.

All across the united states,
families throughout the country

Are gathered
to watch a solar eclipse,

That rare natural phenomenon

Where the moon passes
between the earth and the sun,

Shrouding the area
in total darkness

For more than two minutes.

[ crowd chattering ]

The big solar eclipse
of 2017.

Everybody remembers this one.
The frenzy was crazy.

Man: Oh, look at that!

Narrator:
That may be because this is
the first time in 38 years

That a total solar eclipse
will be visible in the u.S.

Whoo!

On an average day,

The sun comes up,
the sun goes down.

But to break that pattern
where something causes the sky

To go dark when it's in the
middle of the day can be scary.

It can be unnerving.

Narrator:
The midwest is where the eclipse
will be in full effect.

And if you're in
the path of totality,

Causing the temperature
to drop noticeably,

It's even more unsettling.

It's very startling, even just
watching clips of an eclipse.

It's very dramatic.

Narrator: But a solar eclipse
can also present horrible danger

Because looking directly
into the sun

Can literally burn your eyeballs
and cause blindness.

The trouble with some of these
eclipses are, as the sun

Starts getting covered,
it's not as bright.

So it's tempting to look,
but looking at the sun

At any time is a
grave danger to your eyes.

Narrator:
Of course, the sun doesn't
have to burn your retinas

In order for it to feel like
the world is ending.

What if the river
near your house

Suddenly turned
from crystal clear to...

Blood red?

June 14, 2017,

Kingston, jamaica.

A local man out for a walk
comes upon this startling sight,

Reminiscent of the
very first plague...

...Where god literally turned
the water of the nile river

Into blood.

Dr. Pinn: It is quite a sight.

You've got this rushing water,
and it's not just a bit of it

That's red, a red tint.

It is blood red.

You know, a lot of people
are very religious,

And when they see things
like this,

They think this is
a sign from god.

This, once again,
takes us back to the bible

And the 10 plagues of egypt.

Martin: Where the lord says
to pharaoh, "with my staff,

I will strike the water
of the nile

And it will be changed
into blood.

The fish and the nile will die,
and the river will stink,

And the egyptians will not
be able to drink its water."

And that is meant to be a sign,

A symbol of coming doom,
of the end of days.

Narrator: While terrifying,

There is a logical explanation
for why it appears

This river has turned
to blood.

Vagell: It's linked back
to dye tracing,

And dye tracing
allows scientists

And other officials
to track pollution,

See where there's leaks
in the water system,

And it can also be used, too,
to address drainage systems.

Narrator:
Although only temporary,

It's no less frightening.

Cano: And these are things that
subconsciously have embedded

Themselves into our psyches.

We are modern people,

And yet when we see
something like this,

We think old testament,

Real wrath-of-god stuff,
and it affects us.

The sheer power of a typhoon
can decimate cities

And wipe out entire villages,

And they're dangerously
unpredictable

Because out of nowhere,

A typhoon can leave you
blindsided and at its mercy...

[ car horn blares ]

...With no time to escape
and little chance of surviving.

[ wind rushing ]

Tainan city, taiwan.

Residents are digging out
after typhoon soudelor,

Which was upgraded to
super-typhoon status,

Struck hard and fast with
sustained 140-mile-an-hour winds

And torrential rain.

So, a typhoon is
a tropical cyclone

Over the northwest pacific.

These super typhoons are usually
more intense than the most

Devastating hurricanes
in the atlantic ocean.

There's more fury,
there's more intensity

With these storms
as compared hurricanes.

Narrator:
But now the storm has passed,

And the worst
is thought to be over

As people begin
to venture back outside.

[ man speaking mandarin ]

Then suddenly, as a white car
turns onto the road,

This vehicle's
dash cam captures...

[ car horn blares ]

[ woman screams ]

A spontaneous, horrifying surge
ambushes the white car in front

And lifts it off the ground,
tossing it like a toy.

There's a suction vortex.

It's almost like a hose
from a vacuum

That's getting sucked and
dragged along the ground.

You can't drive out
of the situation.

This is a classic example
of a typhoon-induced tornado.

They're very hard to predict.

And this video here actually
shows you how it falls apart

And moves away
just as quickly as it forms.

Narrator: A perfect storm of
moisture and heat spawns

The intense whirlwind
without any warning whatsoever.

[ car horn blares ]

[ woman screams ]

There's a woman sitting
on the side of the road.

Oh, my god. There's a lady
on the side of the road.

The people in the car,

You could tell
they were puzzled.

They're like, "why is this lady
on the side of the road?

Did she just fly past my car?"

Narrator: The woman is in shock
and tells the driver

She was thrown from her
motorcycle when the storm hit.

Delgado: That woman was
lucky to be alive.

You know what they say,
"go buy a lottery ticket."

She won the lottery that day.

Narrator: The truly terrifying
encounter leaves everyone

At the scene shaken but feeling
lucky to be alive.

What immediately
comes to mind for me

Is the power of nature,

A power that we can't control,
we can't harness,

That we are always
and already vulnerable to.

Watching this, it forces
a sense of humility.

There is so much
that we cannot control.

trapped inside a raging inferno,

Surrounded
by deadly volcanic ash...

...Running from a twister...
