They've sold their homes, spent their last shilling on equipage for the New World.

As for the religious dissenters

they're very earnest and determined to see it through.

Now when you have even a small group like that, Captain they're likely to infect the rest with their zeal.

So, they can say their prayers standing on their heads if they have a mind to.

'The Virginia Company owns a tract in this region.'

This is our first night at sea.

I'm growing acquainted with my fellow passengers.

It is possible to distinguish the religious dissenters from the ones who are going for trade or adventure.

Perhaps it is the cleanliness and neatness of the dissenters which they have made part of their religion.

They have invented a saying "Cleanliness is next to godliness" and they're somewhat tiresome about it.

The others are a varied lot.

Farmers, weavers,tailors, cobblers.

Some are tradesmen with the wisdom to see ahead the opportunities of a new world.

In addition to the children of the settlers there are the street waifs, homeless orphans cast aboard by the Lord Mayor of over-populated London.

The master of the Mayflower,Captain Jones has shown in many small matters an attitude of unfriendliness toward the passengers.

He sees insults in every glance and accusations in every innocent word.

Well, Master William Button you should be below... asleep.

The winter is over, the land is abloom and nature's bleak face has begun to smile again.

Of the 102 who landed here,56 remained.

Six died in December eight in January, seventeen in February, thirteen in March all taken by the sickness.

A combination of scurvy and lung fever.

But now this plague is over and our hopes are high for the future.

The Indians have proved gentle, poor, friendly and often hungry like us.

If only in this, we're fortunate in having settled here in New England for in Virginia, the Indians are murderous with hate for the white man.

And all these months

Captain Jones has kept his Mayflower standing by providing us with shelter and comfort during the long winter until our homes were built.

Without her, we'd have perished. All of us.

We, who through God's mercy, have survived the sickness have gathered to say farewell to Captain Christopher Jones

who sails tomorrow for England.

We wish this token could be a thing of greater value.

But there is nothing of much value on this shore save, perhaps, what we hold in our hearts for this man.
