the village where I grew up.

Where my family lives,

they can't wait to meet you.

- This must be an exciting moment for you.

The Hopi territory is truly magnificent.

(dramatic music)

Look at how many people!

Your whole village has
turned out to welcome you.

- Yes, we're organizing a celebration too.

- Do they know we have a message for them?

- Yes, they most certainly have been told

and I'm sure they must have
heard about our victory

over the Spider Clan, too.

(people cheering)

- This is such a wonderful welcome.

Thank you Hopi-ho.

Look at those lovely costumes.

Who are those men and women?

- They're the representatives

of the 11 brotherhoods of our clans.

They're the ones who work the land.

(people cheering)

- Where are they all going?

Why are they leaving, Hopi-ho?

- They're going to wait
for us in the kiva.

the sacred chamber of the Hopi.

They belong to the 22 clans

who tread the red path of bodily life.

- What is the red path of bodily life?

- It's the opposite of the blue path

of the spiritual world.

- You didn't know that, did you?

- So we must go in there, too.

- Yes, but we must give them time

to prepare their secret ceremony.

The red path is symbolic.

It represents life's difficulties

that sooner or later we all face.

- I find it all so intriguing.

My friends, we're all invited

to attend the ceremony in the kiva.

- They can hold a victory
celebration anywhere they like

as long as I'm the guest of honor.

- Don't play the fool.

- It's a tradition, Moc.

- The customs of each tribe
must always be respected.

- Alright, but what is all this stuff

about the kiva and the
red path, do you know?

- We're about to find out,
Moc, we hace no choice.

Come on, it's time for us to go see.

(footsteps)

I am very touched by your invitation.

- [All] Pocahontas.

- We have been waiting for
you with great trepidation.

- Yes, Pocahontas, our La Hopi are proud

to welcome you to our sacred kiva.

It is appropriate to receive the message

of The Great Spirit in his sacred place.

- [Pocahontas] I am overwhelmed
by the honor you do me.

- An honor you deserve, princess.

You have defeated the
clan of the spider woman.

- It was a simple enough task.

- Oh no, the spider woman was invincible

but she is no longer, thanks to you

and thanks to you, we who travel

on the red path will
find the blue path open

and the sacred mystery

of the kachina shall be revealed to us.

- I'm so pleased I have achieved this.

- And now that all of us are
assembled in the sacred kiva,

it is time for the ceremony to begin.

(seagull chirping)

(upbeat tribal music)

- We call this dance by our
warriors the rainbow dance.

- It's a fascinating dance, so beautiful.

- It's performed according to this design.

We Navajo believe that
after the spring rains,

the rainbow heralds the harvest.

- The arc of the rainbow
is a promise of harmony.

And it's many colors symbolize unity.

- We Seneca's also perform
the dance of the rainbow

and we know the circles that it forms

represent the circle of life.

(celebratory tribal music)

(laughter)

- (giggles) They're so sweet.

- It is a favored dance of the Hopi

and the children like it too.

- I can see why.

- Last time we had
performed the rainbow dance,

one of our chiefs made this prophesy.

"The day the while buffalo
takes his place in the herd,

it will bring peace and
harmony to our lands.

White men sons will identify with us

and learn to respect
the earth, our mother."

- (laughs) Chickens will grow teeth

before the pale faces resemble us.

- And the whole world will belong to us.

- Be serious, a prophecy
by one of our people

which tells uf peace on earth

is pleasing for The Great Spirit.

(celebratory tribal music)

- I was told on starry nights

the Hopi perform a
ritual called Wu Wu Chen.

- Could you please tell

us more about it, great medicine man?

- I will tell you all about it tomorrow.

Tonight, there was a dance

and now it is time to get some rest.

- You mean it's over?

- No, the real celebration
begins tomorrow.

- Our celebration for the
messengers will last a whole week.

- And it's all dancing?

- No, there will be
tournaments to test the skill

of the warriors of all the tribes.

- Naturally, all our guest are invited

to participate too if they wish.

- Tournaments?

I can't wait to take part!

- Me too, I'm ready for
everything. (lchuckles)

- Be warned, our warriors are proud

of their skill and prowess.

- Well, they're about to find
out that I'm the strongest.

- I have a feeling the
victory celebration will

be quite extraordinary.

Great Spirit, I thank you

for helping me defeat the
spider woman and all her clan.

(bird chirps)

(gasps)

(gentle music)

Look how many of you there are!

Birds of the sky, you are
all witnesses to my joy.

You've all come to dance
with me, how lovely.

I love you, feathered friends.

What a delightful surprise.

You're holding a celebration
all for me this morning.

(cheering)

(excited laughter)

- They're giants.

- [Woman] Yes, be quiet.

(chants)

- May the great victory celebration begin.

First event, the archery contest.

(cheering)

(crowd murmurs)

(suspenseful music)

(gasps)

- Yellow Wolf.

(exhales)

Bullseye.

(cheers excitedly)

(laughs)

- Next round.

(cheers)

- Take your places for the second round.

- I won for the Senecas!

(cheers happily)

- And I won for the Navajo!

(crowd cheers)

- Don't worry, you'll do
better next time, True Feather.

- The smaller target will be much harder.

- THey're making the
archers step back too.

- These contests train our braves

to be fearsome opponents
for the pale faces.

- Thea archers of the Hopi
tribe are the best of all.

- With archers like these,

we will be able to defend
ourselves against the invaders.

- That time will come.

- Watch, the last round of
the contest is about to start.

- Ready?

(crowd murmurs)

- You're the winner, well done!

(applause)

- THat's amazing, I didn't
know the Hopi were that good.

What do you think, Moc?

- I think they're all amateurs.

So, did you lose on purpose?

- Not at all, that Hopi's too good for me.

- If you say so.

- He just proved it, Moc.

- And now the tomahawk throwing contest!

- Tomahawks?

This is a good chance for
Moc, let's hope he takes part.

(footsteps)

- I'm gonna win!

- Go for it, Moc, for
the honor of the Mohicans

and for all of Pocahontas's team.

- He's right, Pocahontas,

the honor of you escort is at stake.

- Moc is such a show off.

Let's hope he hasn't bitten
off more than he can chew.

seen him throw a tomahawk

but he's the best warrior
in the whole group.

(whines)

- Now for the spear throwing contest.

(crowd murmurs)

- Look at tate coyote, he's
still running around in circles.

Why is he doing that?

- What coyote?

What's Pocahontas talking about?

- I don't know, I don't see any coyote.

- The coyote's next to
the man with the spear.

- I can see the man but there's no coyote.

(whines)

- I don't believe it, he's one
of our best spear throwers.

(laughs)

- He missed because the coyote
interfered with his aim.

- Of course, you're right.

That must be the sacred coyote,

the friend of Coshira the Joker.

- THat's really strange.

- No it's not,

I'm sure Coshira's around here
somewhere, look over there!

- OH yes, how funny he looks.

(laughter)

- The Coshira's a medicine man

who's guardian animal is the coyote

and he uses the coyote's playful nature

to give sick people the joy
they can't find in themselves

because of their ignorance.

- I understand but why
have they come here?

- There must be somebody sick
here who needs his services.

(laughs)

- And now for the last contest,
the all in wrestling match!

- Aw, I'm really curious to see this.

I bet there will be a bunch
of milksops competing.

(laughs)

- Why don't you enter, Moc?

Give us a good fight at least.

- Go on, Moc, stick your neck
out, you'll win hands down.

- Go for it, Moc!

- You really want me to?

Alright, I'll do it.

(chuckles)

- Ready?

(barking)

Hey!

(laughter)

- Catch that thieving coyote!

You heard me, catch him!

(snickers)

- A little buffalo
grease will work wonders.

- Come back, you filthy beast!

- Moc didn't know that the Coshira put oil

on his opponent's legs to
make him too slippery to hold.

(giggles)

(jingling)

(laughs)

- And now, the corn dance.

- This is so exciting.

I never watched a dance
before, it's ver interesting.

- Tell me something, great chief.

Aren't those Navajo braves
performing the corn dance?-

- Yes, those are our Navajo braves.

(upbeat tribal music)

- I don't think I've ever seen

such good dancers, they're wonderful.

- The Hopi are also famous
for being excellent dancers.

- Pocahontas, do you like
our traditional music?

- [Pocahontas] Yes, I love it.

- I'm so glad, it's being
played in your honor.

- When you see our Hopi dancers

and hear our music you
will be equally delighted.

- I know the Hopi have great talent.

- Well, the Navajo are
better at everything.

- That's a very rash thing to say.

- I'm telling the truth, you're
just envious, that's all.

- What is this quarrel all about, Hopi-ho?

- In the old days, the
two tribes were enemies.

- Enemies?

- Yes, but now they've buried the hatchet.

They're as close as brothers.

(laughs)

- I see many of our Hopi warriors

out there amongst the dancers.

- That may be, but the corn dance is ours.

- No, that's wrong.

We've been dancing it
for a very long time.

The corn dance is ours.

- How can you say that?

We brought the dance

with us when we arrived
here with the Apache.

In those days, the Navajo
and the Apache were nomads.

We were already growing corn.

- Have you forgotten that we
all share the same customs?

- Because you became herdsmen
and craftsmen like us!

- I don't understand why you're quarreling

if your tribes have
become allies and friends.

- You're right, now the Navajo

and Apache are quite different.

- The Apache have remained nomads.

- I think that like this,
everything is for the best

and the best worlds for your two tribers.

- That is so?

- Now we have the same customs.

We share the same food and
the same kind of dwellings.

Our traditional houses, the hogans,

are quite similar in style

to your square earth and stone buildings.

And that's not all, event the women

of our two nations wear the same garments.

Look over there, that
group is waiting for us.

(laughing happily)

They are young Navajo and Hopi women.

- And they're all dressed in the same way.

I think they look very elegant.

- Furthermore, the Navajo
religion and our own

have the same belief in the existence

of an upper world where the
people's of this earth dwell

and a sacred lower world
where the dead rests.

- During the day, the
sun shines on the living

and at night, on the dead.

- Pocahontas, the Indians who live

in this area want to dwell in peace.

First, it was the Hopi with the Navajo

and the now the Apaches and the Pueblos,

the Umers and the Tuwis are here too.

- Yes, that is the wish
of The Great Spirit.

All of you must live like brothers.

(energetic cheers and applause)

Thank you for helping me

to accomplish my mission, Great Spirit.

(crowd cheers)

This celebration has
given me renewed strength

and now, we can pursue or journey.

I can not thank you enough.

Your hospitality has
been truly extraordinary.

(cheers)

Soon, we shall be reunited
in one great nation.

We shall follow the example
of the Navajo and the Hopi.

Like them we shall live as brothers

and we forget all our old rivalries.

(excited cheering)
