NARRATOR: Op 26 augustus 1883,

barste de vulkaan op het kleine vulkanische eiland Krakatau uit,

dit veroorzaakte één van de verschrikkelijkste
natuurrampen in de geschreven geschiedenis.

In minder dan 48 uur werden honderden steden
en dorpen verwoest.

Meer dan 36.000 mensen verloren hun leven.

Degenen die de eruptie overleefden lieten dagboeken,
oogetuigenverklarigen en intervieuws na.

Ze werden verzameld door de
geoloog Rogier Verbeek,

een van de weinige wetenschappers die
de uitbarsting meemaakte.

Sommigen waren mijn vrienden.

Ik heb de afgelopen twee jaar van mijn leven

geprobeerd de verschrikkelijke gebeurtenissen van
Augustus 1883 bij elkaar te krijgen.

Wij leefden in de meest vulkanische regio van
onze planeet,

Indonesie.

Er zijn hier meer dan honderd
actieve vulkanen.

Krakatau is er 1 van.

Het vulkanische eiland Krakatau
ligt in het midden van de Sunda Straat,

45 kilometer van het vasteland.

Eeuwenlang leefden de mensen hier in het
zicht van de vulkaan.

We dachten niet dat dat gevaarlijk was.

Ik had deze mensen kunnen redden.

ZIj werden getuigen van de laatste dagen,
toen de wereld voor altijd veranderde.

De contracten voor de peper zijn uitgegeven

tegen de gebruikelijke 2.5 %

dat zal ons meer opbrengst geven dan
Dhr. De Vries aanvankelijk...

Willem was controleur van Katimbang,
een Nederlandse buitenpost.

Hij kon nauwelijks leven van zijn magere salaris.

Zijn vrouw Johanna was 26 jaar en ze hadden
drie kinderen.

we ontmoetten elkaar verschillende keren
die zomer en waren het nooit met elkaar eens.

Ik had naar haar moeten luisteren.

In mei van 1883 bezocht ik de familie Schuit.

Er waren geruchten over toegenomen vulkaan activiteit,

Ik wilde dat voor mezelf constateren.

De familie Schuit was een Nederlandse familie die leefden en
werkten bij de Fourth Point vuurtoren,

De vuurtoren lag 1,5 kilometer ten oosten van Krakatau.

Prachtig! Is ze niet geweldig?

Is het gevaarlijk?

ja natuurlijk is het gevaarlijk
als je er bovenop zou zitten,

maar hier niet, er zit meer dan 45 kilometer
zee tussen ons.

Op 20 mei begon Krakatau voor de eerste keer
met het uitspuwen van enorme hoeveelheden rook.

Dat hadden we als waarschuwing moeten beschouwen,

maar sommigen zagen er alleen een mogelijkheid tot
geld verdienen in.

geronseld door de Nederlanders om de kolonie te runnen.

voor een dagje uit naar Krakatau.

gingen de drie kraters van Krakatau
door met het spuwen van stoom.

Het gas zag er in de zon vreemd blauw
en groen uit.

De inwoners dachten dat er niets aan de hand was,

de vulkaan was per slot bijna 2 kilometer van de kust.

Het normale leven ging door.

NARRATOR: Johanna Beijerinck werd later
ondervraagd door de Nederlandse autoriteiten.

JOHANNA: Het leek alsof de bevingen per dag
erger werden,

maar mijn man Willem wilde niet luisteren.

Hij hield zich meer en meer bezig met zijn
zakelijke beslommeringen.

was Willem Beijerinck verantwoordelijk voor het welzijn
en de veiligheid van alle mensen.

Hij werd volledig op de hoogte gehouden over de
ontwikkelingen van Krakatau maar deed niets.

Het leek erop alsof hij met heel andere dingen bezig was.

then an eruption of this magnitude

would protect us from Krakatoa.

The volcano was entering a new phase.

the magma chamber of Krakatoa was empty.

With nothing to support it,
the volcano began to collapse.

The resulting blast was so great,
it was heard 3,000 miles away in Australia.

NARRATOR: Captain Lindemann was awarded
the cross of gold by the Dutch authorities

for his bravery in saving the lives
of those on board the Loudon.

His logbook provided an invaluable insight
into the eruption of Krakatoa.

He captained the Loudon until his death
just two years later.

The eruption destroyed 165 coastal villages

and had left more than 36,000 people dead.

There were reports of bodies and pumice

being washed up on the coast of Africa
a year later.

The Dutch authorities ordered
250,000 gallons of gasoline

to be used in the burning of the bodies.

Willem Beijerinck continued working
for the Dutch government for the next 13 years,

before he retired to Holland.

Johanna Beijerinck's account of the eruption
was reported around the world.

She remained with her husband Willem
and soon became pregnant again.

She named her yoUngest child

after the one she lost on the hillsides of Sumatra.

vulkanologie.

Hij voorzag wetenschappers van een gedetailleerd
ooggetuigenverslag,

van de gehele cyclus van een vulkaanuitbarsting voor het
eerst in de hele geschiedenis van de mensheid.

De uitbarsting had verstrekkende gevolgen.

Twentig miljoen ton zwavel werd de
atmosfeer in gelanceerd

dit veroorzaakte uitzonderlijke zonsondergangen overal ter wereld

en dempte de temperatuur over de hele aarde tot
ver in de twintigste eeuw.

Van Krakatau zelf bleef bijna niets over.

Twaalf vierkante kilometer vaste steen verdwenen
binnen 48 uur.

De vulkaan had zichzelf kapot geblazen.

In 1927,

barste de vulkaan vanaf 300 meter onder de Sunda Straat,
opnieuw uit.

Zoals Verbeek voorspelde in zijn geschriften
vormde er zich een nieuwe vulkaan,

5 meter per jaar groeiend...

De Indonesiers noemen deze vulkaan Anak Krakatoa.
