We typically don't see wildlife,
but, however, in this circumstance,

I can't not help the little turtle that's sick and not doing well.

A little road rash on the plastron, but not too bad.

There is like an indention in the plastron,

So, on first glance, it looks like the shell's broken.

Yeah, broke, but like, months, years ago.

So, what we're seeing is like,

an old, old fracture and then we're seeing just road rash on the top.

Go ahead and put it down.

See, here, I would wanna flush a little bit.

There's one little spot that I need to flush out,

to make sure that it's not penetrating into the body wall.

The nice thing about this one,
is it's so superficial,

it doesn't go into like, the body wall, or anything like that.

Thankfully, most of the road rash is on the surface.

There is one cut that goes a little bit deeper.

However, by cleaning it out really well,

I'm hoping I'll be able to patch it in a couple of days.

I'm highly impressed this guy could pick this turtle up.

Yeah, actually, this is the second turtle.

We found a run over turtle about a year ago

and kept him for about three months,

until he was recovered and then we set him loose again.

I wanna meet this person. .

I mean, he's brave.

So far, I think this got really lucky,

I think just a shot of pain medication,

because I bet he's a little uncomfortable.

Only problem is, I would put it in

the front half of the animal, but be careful.

This turtle's head is extremely long.

These guys, what they do, is they sit on the bottom of the pond.

They are ambush predator,

and they wait and they wait and they wait and they wait
and they go chacaw and then they eat something.

Do you want a bowl or something instead?

The team uses a paper towel roll,

to secure the turtle's mouth, while they inject pain meds.

Just tell me when it's safe.

Dr. K checks out Venus' x-rays,

to see what's causing the axolotl's mysterious behavior.

Alright, so I'm looking at Venus, the axolotl's radiographs.

This is concerning.

What's interesting is that she has good bone density in some bones,

but she has missing bone.

Have you ever looked at an axolotl radiographs before?

Yeah.
Okay, great, help me then. .

These bones look like they have great bone density...
... and then there's just gone bone,

but this is not normal.

Axolotls are fascinating creatures,

but there's very little medical and scientific knowledge about them.

This makes it both frustrating and fascinating at the same time.

This can't be normal.

It could.
Very true.

So, I'm really hoping that Venus' blood work results

will show me what's going on with her.

So that's normal.

Her and her calcium levels are within the normal range.

Hm. That's strange, 'cause her blood work looks normal then.

Here we go, no, everything is within normal ranges.

So, it's good that all her numbers look normal,

but it doesn't give me reason for why she is not well.

So, this is a really frustrating case.

I have an adorable little animal, fantastic owner

and her tests are all coming back normal.

I'm glad that the blood work came back normal,

'cause that rules out major things, like kidney failure,

but I still have a very sick little animal that's quite a mystery on my hands.

Pearl, the potbellied pig remains weak and in pain,

even after getting fluids.

Dr. K cannot wait any longer to take x-rays.

I really need to get some radiographs on Pearl,

to see if there's any evidence of an intestinal obstruction,

or perhaps even a tumor.

Alright.

Pearl's radiographs show a huge amount of gas

in her stomach and intestines.

When you have that amount of gas in your intestinal tract,

it is excruciatingly painful,
I just feel so sorry for this poor thing.

I don't like the loss in detail there.

The obstruction could be due to ileus.

It looks like she has what we call ileus,

where the intestines just stop their normal peristaltic movement

and they get filled with gas.
It's excruciatingly painful.

The ileus is probably secondary to

whatever set off the vomiting and diarrhea in the first place.

Ah, see, that's a good thing I popped the IV in.

You little pumpkin.

I'm gonna update Pearl's owner,

that there's all this gas causing a tremendous amount of pain.

I'm really hoping that we can get Pearl turned around,

not only for their sake,
but also for her little sister,

the two-year-old that she's basically grown up with as a sibling.

Alright, so, yes, she's got problems,

but it doesn't like she's obstructed.

Okay.
So, that's good,

Right.
Alright.

But she does have a tremendous amount of gas built up in her intestines

and it's excruciatingly painful.

What causes that?

What I think happened, I don't know if she ate something

that started off the vomiting and the GI upset,

which kind of snowballed into inflammation of the intestines.

It will go away?

Usually. I do wanna keep her in hospital, IV fluids,

give her something to settle her stomach,

give her some pain relief and hopefully,

within at least 24, 48 hours,
hopefully get her right back home.

Okay.

Good news there was no obstruction and now she has--

Gas.

Pearl will remain in the clinic,
until she starts feeling better.

Pepper, a hedgehog with possible blood in her urine,

rushes in, with the owner's pet sitting dad.

When she needs to travel because of her job,

I am taking care of pet.

How long have her eyes been white like this?

She has mature cataracts.

Yeah, she's had cataracts,

they have been for like, I... I believe like, in January,

that's when it started happening.

Got it, so you've seen some blood in the urine recently?

Yeah.
Yes.

When someone comes to me with a hedgehog with blood in their urine,

it truly could be from their bladder,

secondary to a bladder stone, or severe bladder infection.

The other thing is that

it could be coming from the reproductive tract.

It's not uncommon for hedgehogs to get all different kinds of tumors

and unfortunately, they are prone to tumors in their uterus,

which can cause blood to come out like this.

It started off like, Sunday... Sunday night.

Okay.
That I realized that she had a lot of blood,

it was really serious, she was just like covered in blood.

But she's been very active,

she's not lethargic, she's eating fine,
but I just, you know, I ... I got worried.

I can feel when I'm palpating her,

that her bladder's full and I don't wanna lose that sample.

To see if the blood is truly in her urine.

The other possibility is that

it's coming from her reproductive tract.

So, what I wanna do is... is before she pees anywhere

and I lose that sample,

I wanna rush her into the back and just use a needle,

to get the urine out of her bladder.

Okay. Okay, yeah, yeah, whatever, you know, whatever you need to do.

Alright, no problem, I'll back up in a couple of minutes.

Pepper is actually a very tiny animal.

She weighs less than one pound.

Animals that size really cannot lose a lot of blood,

without it becoming life threatening.

I'm using a needle and syringe,

to draw some urine out of Pepper's bladder.

This is the quickest way for me to determine

whether there's truly blood in her urine,

or if it's coming from her reproductive tract.

Alright, so it's not in the urine, I don't think.

Just when I was palpating her, the blood came out.

Not good, honey.

This is telling me that the blood that's coming out

is actually not from her urine,
it's in her reproductive tract.

You are bleeding bad, honey.

Ideally, what we would do, is take her to surgery

and get her reproductive tract out.

Got it, oh, honey. I can't wait.

Pepper really needs to have surgery today.

She's losing a lot of blood from her reproductive tract,

I need to get in there and see what's going on.

I'm gonna update Pepper's owner

and try to get her into emergency surgery, as soon as possible.

Alright, so, what we've got going on is that

the blood is not coming from the urine.

The blood is actually coming from her reproductive tract.

Her urine's actually clear, so it's good.

But, even just with very gentle palpation,

she is passing a large volume of blood.

So, this is pretty serious and this can be life threatening,

if we don't get this taken care of as soon as possible.

So, what... what do we need to do, doctor?

So, what she needs to have done is,

she actually needs to get spayed and we need to do it,

pretty much on an emergency basis,
because she's bleeding so much.

I can hear how much this owner absolutely loves this little hedgehog

and I know it must be really heartbreaking

to get news like this over the phone,

that your little animal has to have an emergency surgery

to stop this bleeding and save her life.

Okay.

I ... I thought at first, that it would be something not serious.

The most important thing is to have everything in the proper hands.

Is it like a high-risk surgery?

There's always risks with surgery,

it's something we do moderately commonly,

but she can't go on bleeding this much.

Right.
That's a lot of blood came out.

Okay.
I like Pepper.

I like Pepper, is so sweet, we'll miss for sure, a lot,

if she... if she's not anymore with us.

So, I'm going in to spay Pepper, the hedgehog.

Alright, little Pepper.

And that would be why she was bleeding.

Yep, bad news.

Oh, that's her uterus.
No wonder there's a problem.

Oh, ah, yes.

If Pepper's uterus ruptures

before I can get it clamped and removed,

she could potentially lose a lot of blood

and even die on the table.

So, this ... this is her uterus and it's all filled with blood.

It certainly needs to come out though.

Big blood clot.

Yep, bad news.

So that is out of her body,
so now she won't bleed anymore.

That should stop the bleeding.

I love surgery, I can fix things.

It's a good thing Pepper did come in when she did.

Removing that blood-filled uterus will definitely save her life.

the Florida soft shelled turtle from the middle of the road.

We all wanna know how you got that soft shell in your car. .

Well, I just picked him up.

I have... I have a towel in the car

and I just threw him over and put it over... put him in.

That's awesome. And you did a brave job.

Did you see him get hit by the car?

He must have been run over, or something,

because I... I was... there were cars like, swerving,

so I just, when I saw it, I just put my car right in the middle of the road

and blocked the road.

And I thought he was dead, but when...

... I went to touch him, he was moving,

so I put him off the road and I said,

"No, he's bleeding, let's take him some place."

Yeah, he's very alive.
He looks, honestly, pretty good.

I agree he probably needed to be assessed.

I was able to like, clean the wound and look at everything.

The really great news is, it doesn't like anything is breached.

Meaning that it doesn't like there's like a cut going deep into his body cavity

and nothing's fractured which is...
... really awesome.

This gentleman was a really awesome individual,

to not only see a turtle in the middle of the road and try to help it,

but to help this turtle, I mean, she is huge

and he could have definitely gotten bit, pretty badly,

so I think he's not only smart, but very brave.

So, my plan is to give him some pain medication.

I used a laser on the shell,
cleaned everything up

and he'll... he'll honestly get back to doing his thing very soon, so.

I'll always stop for animals.

I like animals more than people,

so we got a lot of 'em, we take care of a lot of 'em,

so it's... it's just fun to do.

Really, he's very lucky and thank you so much for bringing him in.

Well, he's big, so he's obviously, not young.

My plan is to just go ahead and do a couple of days of wound care,

to make sure that we're getting rid of

any potential source of infection

and once I feel confident that the infection is under control,

we'll be able to use some epoxy,

seal him up and then send him back out into the wild.

Okay, let me just bring him in the back,
so a doctor can start looking.

Poncho, a Quaker parrot, rushes in with an eye emergency.

Poncho is the one that's in here. Baby is the other one.

They've been in the same cage, the whole time

and she had pecked at his eye before,

but this morning, it was gone.

We had to come in right away with it.

I guess his friend took his eye out.

Holy.

Are you nice? Come here. I know. Come on.

I've got to put you on the scale over here. Whoop.

Poncho's my little buddy.
He's really easy going.

I can reach in his cage and pick him up.

He'll sit on my lap sometimes.

He's pretty mellow.

But the other one, Baby, is really high strung

and I have to be very careful when I reach my hand in their cage,

to give 'em food or water, whatever,

because she'll come after me every time. .

There's another bird that did this?

Evidently, Alex said, yeah, he lives with a Quaker.

When I saw his eye this morning, I saw... urgh,

it was enough to make you sick.

They've been together forever.

I've no idea what caused it all of a sudden.

He just didn't deserve that, 'cause he's just so sweet.

I'm hoping that the vet can take care of it, the eye,

so that the bird can continue living.

That looks awful.

It does look awful.

Now, I'm just gonna briefly anesthetize it,

so I can take a closer look at this eye

and make a plan with what the heck I'm gonna do to fix this.

Emergency Quaker parrot, Poncho, needs immediate care,

after being attacked by his bird mate.

Okay, yeah, I'm trying to figure out what's going on.

There's a large scab of blood

and a lot of puss over it, what was the eye,

so I'm not quite sure what's going on.

I need to clean things up and make a better assessment.

Now, this does definitely have a puncture,

I can see like, white blood cells and like problems with it.

The eye is there, it's the eyelid that is gone.

I don't know how this bird's gonna function without the upper lid.

She actually tore off his upper eyelid,

there's like a little slither of the lid remaining that was torn.

So, the eye is actually okay,

I mean, it's punctured, but its eyelid is gone.

It's like really gone.

So, I'm wondering to do, is maybe place like a couple of stitches.

I think I need to treat it with antibiotics very aggressively.

I would do that.
Okay.

The biggest complication is gonna be that
his eye did get punctured.

Sometimes, it can still be okay.

I'm gonna put him on systemic antibiotics.

Sometimes it can go south

and I'm gonna have to end up taking the eye out.

However, based on the assessment today,

I think it's really reasonable to just go ahead and treat like,

maybe we can save everything and kind of go from there.

Oh, it's okay, I know.

Oh, you're gonna bite that,
okay, well, better that than me. .

Oh, poor guy.

I just know that this owner must be devastated with Poncho's condition,

so I need to get into the exam room,
to let her know what's going on.

Poncho's doing okay.

We... I was able to get the stuff off and the goo off

and discovered that the eye is intact, which is good.

Oh, thank you, God.

Oh, my gosh, I can't believe it.
I know.

The major problem we have is that the eye does look punctured.

It did get punctured?

Yeah, the main thing that happened was the eyelid got torn.

It actually... a piece kind of fell off and there is a tear itself.

What I need to do is, I need to anesthetize Poncho

and place a stitch with the tiniest suture on the planet. .

I can imagine.

Yeah, with magnification too,

so I can see what I'm even doing

and to place one little... a couple of little stitches,

to try to repair what's left of that lid.

I think it's really important that

we do as much as repair to the eyelid as possible now,

try and then kind of take it from there.

Okay.

Poncho will undergo micro eye surgery later today.

Oh, don't spit it all out, please don't spit it all out.

Venus, a six-year-old axolotl's case, remains a mystery.

Dr. K is treating for a possible bone infection

and now wants to run further tests,
to see if Venus has a blockage.

Just wanna see if there's an obstruction.

Dr. K is desperate to solve this case.

So, the next thing I wanna do,

is to make sure her digestive tract is working normally.

To do this, I'm gonna give her a substance called barium.

What barium does, is it lights up the intestinal tract, bright white,

so you can see that it's passing through,

if it stops, that there's an obstruction.

Don't spit it out, dear.
Oh, you're spitting it out.

Once I get Venus to actually swallow the barium
and keep it in her,

we're gonna take sequential x-rays,

so that we can follow the barium through her GI tract.

If the barium stops, that would indicate a foreign body,

or an obstruction with something else

and would explain why she's not eating.

We wanna take a quick x-ray of the axolotl.

Oh, she's burping.

I just wanna see if she has any barium left in her.

Oh, yeah, she does, fine, good.

So, I gave Venus some barium.

This is her before we put barium in her

and this is her after we put barium in her.

Now, what we're gonna do is follow over time

and see how that barium moves through her GI tract

and see if there's some kind of obstruction,

or something going on in her intestines

that would explain why she's painful,

not eating and not taking food in.

Time will reveal
whether Venus has a serious blockage or not.

Pepper, the hedgehog is recovering from her emergency spay

and may soon get to go home.

Pepper, a little hedgehog,
who was bleeding from her reproductive tract,

is looking great,
Surgery went very well,

her uterus was filled with blood.

I was able to get it all out
and I think she's gonna do really well.

Just gets to rest tonight after the surgery

and then she'll go home tomorrow.

I'm about to attempt to fix the eyelid of Poncho.

The upper lid got cut by the other bird

and it's even missing a little bit of a limb,

so I'm gonna take a little tiny suture

and hopefully, just place one or two stitches to repair the eyelid.

I'm using the micro surgical pack, magnification

and a really really tiny suture.

So, little. It's the cutest suture ever. Okay.

So, I'm using the smallest suture we have
in the entire building

and so, I'm really hoping I'm even able to see the thread.

I lost the suture.

Poncho, the Quaker parrot,
who nearly lost his eye in a bird attack,

is undergoing microsurgery to fix his eyelid.

That was the eyelid repair part,
I think all I can do.

Because there's just like a chunk of this eyelid that's gone.

But that was like, salvaging what was left.

Okay, that's all I can do. That's it.

We were able to repair the eyelid laceration

and also, we were able to close off the eyelid just temporarily.

There's a little tiny crack in the eyelid opening,

so that way, I can medicate the eye,
with antibiotics and things like that,

but for the most part, it's closed,
so hopefully it doesn't move too much.

Poncho will remain in the clinic,

so the staff can keep an eye on his eye.

Oh, so sad.

Venus, the axolotl, is actually a little bit more energetic today.

She's showing signs of improvement and that's encouraging.

We were able to tube feed her this morning

and she kept the food in.

Snap another film for me on her,
I just wanna see where the barium is.

So, I'm gonna take some radiographs today,

to compare them with her previous radiographs

and see if that barium is moving along appropriately,

without any obstruction.

Alright, so these are the original films.
There's the barium.

It's so slow to go.
Very slow. Very slow.

It's passing.

The barium continues to move through.

It looks like she is not obstructed.
That's a good thing.

However, we still have a very sick little axolotl on our hands.

About the only remaining possible cause to rule out is osteomyelitis.

We saw osteomyelitis in another animal,

it looks very bad, not like this.
This is mild, if anything.

Osteomyelitis is an infection of the bones,

it causes inflammation
and makes joints not work properly.

There's nothing stuck in the mouth,
but it doesn't open normally, you know.

I know she's not obstructed.
So, by giving her barium,

we ruled out an intestinal obstruction.

We also ruled out metabolic bone disease,

her calcium levels were normal.

Our main concern is that there's some areas

where her bone doesn't look normal in her spine

and I'm concerned that that could be an infection of the bone,
called osteomyelitis.

We started her on some antibiotics to address infection,

but we also started her on an anti-inflammatory pain reliever

and that's probably why she's feeling so much better today.

He did good.
So, I wanted to... I just brought him in here,

so I can show you the... the eye, what I did to it.

Poncho will take some time to heal,

but I'm pretty confident that he will recover well,

have no issues seeing and live a long, healthy life.

Like, he looks like Rocky at the moment, but... .

He does look a bit like Rocky.

I know. You wanna bite something, don't you?

You just bite that, na, na, na, na, na.

But I think he's going to go home and do well.

He... he's one of my buddies,
I've got a dog and I've got the two birds

and I'm very happy to take Poncho home with me.

If he hadn't come here and if she hadn't done such a good job,

I might have lost him.

I think she's gonna get this little cage that he's in now,

they're still not gonna be together anymore.

is ready for a final shell treatment,
before being returned to the wild.

I'm using this to like, try to make it calmer.

So, I just cleaned this guy's wound,

just gonna inspect it really well,

because I'm actually going to put a little tiny bit of epoxy down here.

So that way, he won't have a problem whenever we release him.

His nose is sticking out the hole.
That's so cute.

So that's why it really is just a very quick simple repair

and he'll be done.

Okay, little guy, don't be mad at me, it won't hurt, I promise.

Have you every used this fiberglass like this before?

Yes.

You have to kind of like press it on in.

So, the fiberglass, what it's doing is,

it's adding another protective layer,
so that things don't go into that hole.

We just need this to set for 24 hours, before it gets released.

Patched up and recovering well,

the next step for the rescued Florida soft shell turtle

is to take him home to the wild.

Alright, cool, so he'll go back,

he'll look interesting the rest of his life, that's okay.

Eventually, that might actually shed off.

The team checks on Pearl, the dehydrated pig,

to see if she's feeling any better after a good night's rest.

She looks so much more comfortable.

I feel like we've put together a really good treatment plan for her.

She's improved, I'm encouraged by that

and I'm really excited about being able to send her home.

I can't tell you how ecstatic I am.

I was afraid she was not gonna have good news for me,

but instead, she said, "Okay, you can take her home."

So, that's where we are, that's really good.

I'm so happy.

... she's moved around, I am so glad.

So, Venus' owner perceives that

she actually looks kind of annoyed right now.

I'll take that, 'cause when Venus first came in,

she was so lethargic, she was barely responsive at all.

I would take annoyed and feisty any day.

So, we're getting there, you know,

and ... and this is, again, reptiles and amphibians,

everything happens super slowly.

You know, mammals turn around in a day or two

and you see what's gonna happen,

but these guys can take a long time.

So, when it comes to treating exotic animals,

sometimes you get an exact diagnosis and sometimes you don't.

So, what we do is, just treat for the treatable

and do the best we can.

I'm hopeful, you know, fingers crossed.

Me too, she looks so different.

Today is a big day,

a really happy day for a Florida soft shell turtle.

He was hit by a car
and suffered some road rash,

but thankfully, no internal injuries.

So, he was able to make a full recovery

and now be released back into the wild.

We're releasing this turtle pretty close to where he was found,

but hopefully, this time,

I think the treatment part of being with the turtle was really cool,

but I think the moment when I released him,

which is something that as a veterinarian,

you don't really get to do,

you don't get to do a lot of releases on animals you help.

It's just this unbelievable feeling and gratification,

it's something that you can't get with anything else.

He's like, "Thank goodness.".
